In this episode, Lindy Hughson, managing editor & publisher of PKN Packaging News, and Nadia Taylor, co-founder and director of tna Solutions, and patron of the 2021 PKN Women in Packaging forum, talk about diversity in the workplace and the benefits it brings.
The discussion starts with the story behind tna Solutions' formation, its pioneering of packaging technology and overcoming early obstacles. Nadia, an emigrant to Australia, confirms that respect for different cultures and equality of people has been a key part of the organisation's operation since the beginning, including maternity policies and pay scales based on the role being performed regardless of gender, heritage, race or religion.
We then move on to discuss the importance of mentors and inspirational role models, along with the concept of reverse mentorship where new skills can be learned from the young. This leads to a review of steps companies can take to support equality, including identification of biases and how to address them.
We wrap up with a discussion of how tna Solutions is supporting young women in STEM to develop more female engineers and the charity efforts of the Nadia and Alf Taylor foundation which is helping young people in disadvantaged communities, especially young girls, through education, health care and social enterprise.
