talking about, um, five elements of health

that God wants you to grow in.

So we're talking about

professional health,

Speaker:

financial health, physical

health, spiritual health,

Speaker:

and today we're talking

about mental health.

Speaker:

And so we have a guest, uh, Joel Polo,

Speaker:

who's registered psychologist say that.

Speaker:

Right. You got it. Okay. Awesome.

Speaker:

Which I've personally used

your services in the past Yeah.

Speaker:

You know, for, um, our family.

Speaker:

And so we're really happy to have you

Speaker:

with us today. So thanks for being here.

Speaker:

- Yeah. It's so good

to be here, man. Yeah.

Speaker:

Talk a little bit about your history,

Speaker:

- What you do.

Speaker:

- Sure. Well, man, when I was

growing up, I either wanted

Speaker:

to be a pastor, engineer, or teacher.

Speaker:

- Okay. So I

- Lived in all three realms.

Speaker:

I actually went to school first, uh,

Speaker:

did some bible college, uh, played soccer.

Speaker:

Yeah. I got a scholarship for that.

Speaker:

And then it ended up,

uh, pursuing teaching.

Speaker:

So that was my first degree.

I love working in schools.

Speaker:

My parents were both teachers. Yeah.

Speaker:

So I guess it kind of just

came naturally. Right.

Speaker:

And through that journey, I

was praying, okay, Lord, like

Speaker:

what is the next steps

in my life look like?

Speaker:

And I had a number of

conversations with people.

Speaker:

So if there's young people listening,

Speaker:

it's, it's a journey, right?

Speaker:

Yeah. Step by step.

Speaker:

And, and one thing I discerned

is I really am passionate

Speaker:

about helping people love teaching,

Speaker:

but really love, like

helping kids, helping,

Speaker:

uh, teenagers especially.

Speaker:

Yeah. So someone said, well,

Speaker:

you could be a counselor or psychologist.

Speaker:

I'm like, oh, cool, I'll check into that.

Speaker:

So after some research,

Speaker:

and, you know, a lot of

school Yeah. , I ended up

Speaker:

- And a weekend course, right?

Speaker:

Yeah. $500 later in a

weekend. Course . Yeah.

Speaker:

- Right. I end up on this

journey, uh, for the past 10 years

Speaker:

of being able to, um,

Speaker:

work in professional

practice in schools and,

Speaker:

and also, uh, support clients and families

Speaker:

- As well.

Speaker:

Yeah. Well, that's great. So

we're talking about mental

Speaker:

health, which is loaded, right.

Speaker:

That idea, especially I

would say particularly

Speaker:

within the realm of the church.

Speaker:

Right. There's some, um,

confusion about that.

Speaker:

And so just to maybe again,

set the table mm-hmm .

Speaker:

What are we talking about exactly when

Speaker:

we talk about mental health?

Speaker:

- Great question. I love even

Speaker:

to think about the term

wellness, you know?

Speaker:

So in terms of wellness, we

look at emotional, mental,

Speaker:

spiritual, uh, physical.

Speaker:

There's all these different

areas of course you guys

Speaker:

are covering, which is great.

Speaker:

And they all overlap. And especially

Speaker:

from a Christian perspective.

Speaker:

Uh, we have, uh, we're spiritual beings.

Speaker:

We have a soul and live in a body. Hmm.

Speaker:

So our soul, our mind will

Speaker:

and emotions is a really key aspect

Speaker:

of stewarding our mental health. So

Speaker:

- That's what we'll

talk about when we talk

Speaker:

about soul today.

Speaker:

And if we go into scripture,

the Bible will talk about soul.

Speaker:

And it's really that three,

those three things, our mind,

Speaker:

our will, our emotional.

Speaker:

So we're talking about

soul health. Mm-hmm .

Speaker:

Really today is what we're

talking about. Great. Okay.

Speaker:

There we go. Now we set the

table. Let's, so let's begin, .

Speaker:

So what are some, um,

Speaker:

maybe you would say common misconceptions

Speaker:

that people find around mental health?

Speaker:

And maybe if you can even

add from the church aspect

Speaker:

or the Christian aspect that

maybe some, some questions

Speaker:

that they have about it

or some misconceptions

Speaker:

or, um, areas

Speaker:

that there's just some

uncertainty regarding

Speaker:

for sure. Yeah. Mental health.

Speaker:

- Absolutely. You know, I love the church.

Speaker:

I've been to a lot of

different types of churches.

Speaker:

So through my personal

Speaker:

and professional experience, uh, you know,

Speaker:

I grew up actually Catholic.

Speaker:

So until I was about seven or eight years

Speaker:

old, attended Catholic church.

Speaker:

I've worked for Catholic school boards.

Speaker:

It's a beautiful tradition,

Speaker:

beautiful masses, beautiful songs.

Speaker:

I love to be a part of

that. I've also been in very

Speaker:

Pentecostal environments, so

kind of like the exact opposite

Speaker:

of that in many extremes.

Speaker:

And probably everything in between.

Speaker:

So the neat thing about

denominations in churches is we

Speaker:

each, I think, have a revelation

or understanding of God.

Speaker:

So there's different kind of,

I think, pitfalls or strengths

Speaker:

and challenges of each sphere.

Speaker:

You know, being a, a church, a part

Speaker:

of POCI think one thing

we often see in kind

Speaker:

of Pentecostal type

environments is the idea

Speaker:

of over spiritualizing.

Speaker:

Everything. For sure.

Speaker:

God is the most powerful

part of our lives,

Speaker:

and the Holy Spirit can come

Speaker:

and heal us, if any mental,

mental or physical disorders.

Speaker:

Um, but there's a journey.

Speaker:

And I love what one

pastor friend of mine said

Speaker:

that God heals and journeys

with us in many ways.

Speaker:

He uses counseling, he uses

prayer, he uses doctors,

Speaker:

he uses medications, he

uses inner healing, a lot

Speaker:

of the amazing ministries

Speaker:

that you guys have at your church here.

Speaker:

But it's a journey.

It's not just one thing.

Speaker:

It's a journey of many things.

Speaker:

And I think a key thing as

Christians is to be open to

Speaker:

how God wants to heal us journey with us

Speaker:

and bring restoration in different ways.

Speaker:

Right. One of my favorite

stories in the Bible

Speaker:

is that this guy name it Right.

Speaker:

And, uh, he's told, okay,

Speaker:

just go like bathe five or six times.

Speaker:

You probably say, I has

nobody exact reference.

Speaker:

And he's like, no, I don't wanna do that.

Speaker:

That's dumb. Yeah. And

Speaker:

- Sometimes, like my kids,

they never want a bath. Right.

Speaker:

- And sometimes Lord might be like, Hey,

Speaker:

you should go to your doctor.

Speaker:

Right. Check this out. Yeah.

Speaker:

Or maybe you should go to

this inner healing prayer

Speaker:

that might seem awkward

or uncomfortable for you.

Speaker:

But I think it's being open

to all the different ways

Speaker:

that God wants to heal and

journey with us. Yeah. That's

Speaker:

- A great idea.

Speaker:

So I know maybe two sides of the spectrum.

Speaker:

The most common ones that

I see is one who they

Speaker:

are repelled by medical professionals.

Speaker:

Right, right. Therapists

counts as a sign of weakness

Speaker:

and a sign of lack of faith

that if I have to succumb

Speaker:

to sitting under, you

know, the, the thumb of a,

Speaker:

of a psychiatrist or psychologist

Speaker:

or therapist, that somehow

I am a bad Christian.

Speaker:

Right. Right. I lack faith.

Right. God isn't working me.

Speaker:

Have you seen that? Absolutely. Okay.

Speaker:

So what would you say

to someone like that?

Speaker:

- Well, first I'd say,

I love his Bible verse

Speaker:

that God's power is made perfect.

Speaker:

Not in our strength, but

actually in our weakness.

Speaker:

And I'm praying to this year,

I love to pray each year

Speaker:

and say, okay, God, what are you focusing

Speaker:

on or highlighting this year?

Speaker:

And the scripture passages I go

Speaker:

after this year was Isaiah 61.

Speaker:

And the first part of the

passage talks about struggle.

Speaker:

It talks about bringing

comfort to those who mourn,

Speaker:

bringing garments of praise

for the spirit of heaviness,

Speaker:

the oil of joy again, for mourning.

Speaker:

And it talks about prisoners

as well, and being set free.

Speaker:

And the Lord spoke something

to me that's so important.

Speaker:

And the idea is, he said, if

you want to thrive in life,

Speaker:

you have to go through the process.

Speaker:

And the Jewish culture, they

Speaker:

actually really celebrate mourning.

Speaker:

Like when someone dies, they

have a whole, um, parade, so

Speaker:

to speak, and they hire even mourners.

Speaker:

So there's a process in which

we mourn things in our lives.

Speaker:

So it's very normalized in their culture.

Speaker:

Perhaps in all our culture,

it's not as normal.

Speaker:

So I think the idea that God

Speaker:

- Was Yeah.

Speaker:

People do not know how to mourn. Exactly.

Speaker:

It's like, I don't know how to, I want

Speaker:

to get outta this as fast as possible.

Speaker:

- Chi me out. Yeah, yeah. I know, right.

Speaker:

- The most awkward

conversations are at a funeral.

Speaker:

'cause no one knows what

to say. Yeah. Right.

Speaker:

- And just avoidance. Right.

Just avoiding all of that.

Speaker:

Right. But I feel like the

Lord wants to invite each one

Speaker:

of us into our own personal journey.

Speaker:

And just being totally

honest, like I am a person

Speaker:

who thought, oh, I'm good,

God, I don't need help.

Speaker:

But the truth is, we're all on a journey

Speaker:

and there's always more healing for us.

Speaker:

Mm-hmm . So whatever that

looks like, you know, I've been

Speaker:

to counseling, I've talked

to doctors, I've been

Speaker:

to inner healing prayer, and it's amazing

Speaker:

how the Lord uses all those things

Speaker:

to take us one step further

on that journey of healing.

Speaker:

And I, I see people in my personal life

Speaker:

and sometimes the different

professional settings

Speaker:

where I just pray, Lord,

would they be willing,

Speaker:

would they open their heart

to just as we talked about,

Speaker:

name him just as we

talked about Isaiah 61,

Speaker:

would they be open to the

journey God has for them

Speaker:

because he wants to heal,

he wants to bring freedom,

Speaker:

and he really wants to help us thrive

Speaker:

and becoming the full

expression of ourselves,

Speaker:

but we have to be open to that journey.

Speaker:

- Yeah. So maybe what I

hear you saying is that, uh,

Speaker:

seeking professional help

from, um, someone who knows

Speaker:

what they're talking about in

the mental health field is one

Speaker:

of the ways that God

can provide, um, health

Speaker:

to us in greater wellness in our, in our,

Speaker:

in our world, in our, in our soul.

Speaker:

But you wouldn't say it is

the only way. Absolutely.

Speaker:

There are other ways that God does that.

Speaker:

And so I would say as, as

one of your pastors, um,

Speaker:

I have visited, um, psychologists

Speaker:

and therapists in the past,

Speaker:

and they actually have a goal

Speaker:

for this year for how

many times I want to go.

Speaker:

I'm actually go, like, I

want to go see them. Amen.

Speaker:

Because I've seen the usefulness of, um,

Speaker:

how God uses people in that field

Speaker:

to bring greater health to my life.

Speaker:

Uh, and so, you know,

as one of your pastors,

Speaker:

there's freedom there to

just break that stigma.

Speaker:

That that's, that's just

a wonderful thing. Yeah.

Speaker:

But I've also seen in my own life

Speaker:

and through ministry, the

other side of that being

Speaker:

that God has worked outside

Speaker:

of medical professionals through prayer.

Speaker:

Absolutely. Like just praying for someone

Speaker:

and God just breaks someone's, you know,

Speaker:

emotional bondage or, or an addiction.

Speaker:

I've seen that happen mm-hmm

. Like with my own eyes.

Speaker:

And so I believe in the pa

Speaker:

and it's a lot cheaper

than seeing a psychology .

Speaker:

And so, you know, that's

always my first line

Speaker:

of defense when people are

Speaker:

walking through, I, I bring prayer.

Speaker:

So maybe that's the other, I

talked about those two. Yeah.

Speaker:

Two, um, you know, sides of

the horse that people fall off.

Speaker:

I'm never gonna see a doctor

because that's a lack of faith,

Speaker:

or all I need is faith

and all I need is prayer,

Speaker:

and I'm never gonna go

see someone like that.

Speaker:

So, you know, maybe could

you speak to that at all?

Speaker:

- Oh, absolutely. You know,

I love what one pastor said,

Speaker:

Jesus has the one step program.

Speaker:

It's really simple about 12 steps.

Speaker:

It's not a thousand

steps. He wants to heal,

Speaker:

and there's always healing available.

Speaker:

I think a really interesting

aspect, you know, I've been

Speaker:

to inner healing, prayer,

I've got prayed for,

Speaker:

and it's just been life changing.

Speaker:

I think those are the, the moments

Speaker:

of the most quantum change

and the most powerful change.

Speaker:

But I believe healing's a journey,

Speaker:

and the Lord brings people into

our lives, pastors, friends,

Speaker:

mentors, counselors,

leadership consultants,

Speaker:

whoever it might be to help

us walk that journey out.

Speaker:

- Yeah. Galatians six

two, I think, is that, um,

Speaker:

I think the reference is correct.

Speaker:

He gives us one another to

carry one another's burden.

Speaker:

Exactly. That's the idea there.

Speaker:

- And the idea of, of mentorship

Speaker:

and walking with people, I

think is so, so important.

Speaker:

Um, because God can heal any moment.

Speaker:

And I love being in

that, those environments

Speaker:

where I've seen miracles

break. It's beautiful.

Speaker:

- Okay. So you are someone

right in the medical field.

Speaker:

Right. Okay. Yeah. Who makes

a living off of, you know,

Speaker:

being the head doctor ,

and you, I don't know if

Speaker:

that's derogatory, but, uh,

Speaker:

who has seen God's miracle

hand? Absolutely. Okay, cool.

Speaker:

- Yeah. Yeah. And my prayer point now as,

Speaker:

as I think about these

things is I pray, Lord,

Speaker:

would you give this person the

stewardship to walk it out?

Speaker:

- What do you mean by that?

- So,

Speaker:

I've seen people just

diving into subjects,

Speaker:

whether it be physical

healing, emotional healing,

Speaker:

mental healing, spiritual healing,

Speaker:

demonize, whatever it might be.

Speaker:

And the Lord heals you

right in that moment.

Speaker:

Um, I think he wants to teach

us how to live healed. Okay.

Speaker:

He, he wants to teach us how

to steward that every day.

Speaker:

So I think about a person maybe

Speaker:

who struggles a lot mentally.

Speaker:

So we pray for them and

the joy of the Lord comes,

Speaker:

but then God gives them

the strategic plan of how

Speaker:

to live in joy every day.

Speaker:

Maybe it's talking to a

friend, reading a Bible,

Speaker:

worship music, getting physical exercise.

Speaker:

There's actually a stewardship plan

Speaker:

where God doesn't just wanna

do something in a moment.

Speaker:

He wants to create a lifestyle of health.

Speaker:

- Yeah. Wow. I've never

heard of that said like that.

Speaker:

I actually think that's true

and helpful. That's great.

Speaker:

So as you talk about mental health, um,

Speaker:

maybe probably the two

most dominant things

Speaker:

that we're talking about

in, in people I'd imagined,

Speaker:

correct me if I'm wrong, would

be depression and anxiety.

Speaker:

So when I was a young, uh, pastor,

Speaker:

I would never really hear those terms.

Speaker:

Very, very few and far between. Yeah.

Speaker:

Now it feels like, uh, every

corner you turn, you know,

Speaker:

someone's struggling with that.

Speaker:

Right. What's going on there?

What do you think's happening?

Speaker:

- Well, I think first and foremost, we're

Speaker:

becoming more aware society,

Speaker:

and especially the church,

we're growing awareness of,

Speaker:

you know, these are

real medical conditions.

Speaker:

And it's not just okay, you know,

Speaker:

you're not praying enough today.

Speaker:

It's like we, we actually

go through things.

Speaker:

And I think that's encouraging

Speaker:

because going back to

that Isaiah 61 piece,

Speaker:

we're actually entering into

the process of our problems

Speaker:

so we can move towards the promise Okay.

Speaker:

Of what God wants to do. Okay.

Speaker:

- Okay. So you're kind of

recognizing something's

Speaker:

wrong. Yes. And you're able to say it.

Speaker:

- I think that's good. Right. Okay. Yeah.

Speaker:

Uh, a metaphor often

gives like a check engine,

Speaker:

like your car, if there's

something going on,

Speaker:

whether it be depression or

anxiety, et cetera, whoa.

Speaker:

Yeah. I need to do something about that.

Speaker:

And a wellknown psychologist from Canada,

Speaker:

his name's Dr. Gordon Neufeld,

he talks about emotions

Speaker:

that need to be felt.

Speaker:

So we need to be able

to feel our emotions,

Speaker:

and they're actually important messengers

Speaker:

that are telling us information.

Speaker:

Mm-hmm . It can become a problem though,

Speaker:

when we're not able,

Speaker:

or we don't have capacity to

do things with those emotions,

Speaker:

and then we can kind of spiral

Speaker:

or get locked into, uh, more

challenges in our lives.

Speaker:

- Yeah. I've often said, you know, kind

Speaker:

of pastoral perspective, if

I'm, if I'm preaching that,

Speaker:

you know, emotions are wonderful

slaves, terrible masters.

Speaker:

Right, right. They're, they're cues

Speaker:

that God has embedded into our

nature to tell us something.

Speaker:

Right. Anger isn't bad, it's

telling you something is wrong.

Speaker:

Right. But if you allow

it to master you, then

Speaker:

that's obviously not something

that you want to happen. .

Speaker:

- So I heard one pastor say,

how would you treat a friend

Speaker:

who lied to you as often as your emotions?

Speaker:

Yeah. a controversial

Speaker:

- Statement.

Speaker:

- I think from my perspective,

you know, I would say

Speaker:

emotions or their, to

help us, they're there

Speaker:

as our supportive partners.

Speaker:

They're, they're important

friends and messengers.

Speaker:

Can we, number one, listen

to them, partner with them,

Speaker:

and then work with them to move towards,

Speaker:

if you're feeling angry about something,

Speaker:

how is that gonna change you?

Speaker:

Maybe you have to change or

modify your environments.

Speaker:

You're not getting frustrated with

Speaker:

- That.

Speaker:

Yeah. Yeah. I remember when I came

Speaker:

to see you a few years

ago with my family, one

Speaker:

of my daughters, that was it.

Speaker:

It was emotional regulation.

Speaker:

And I remember that was

really helpful, that aspect,

Speaker:

that really practical,

Hey, here's some things,

Speaker:

some physical environment

changes that, that you can have

Speaker:

that's gonna help her mm-hmm .

Speaker:

Kind of be able to regulate

that. So I remember

Speaker:

that being game changer.

Speaker:

I mean, we pray and we pray

forever. We pray for her.

Speaker:

And, you know, after a few

months, um, of seeing you

Speaker:

and employing some of those

strategies, just, it changed.

Speaker:

But then I would tell you this is

Speaker:

that some of that stuff returned.

Speaker:

That's right. Right.

It didn't stay forever.

Speaker:

It helped in the moment mm-hmm

. And this past summer, um,

Speaker:

God touched her at camp

Speaker:

and she's like a whole different kid.

Speaker:

Amen. Like, she's, she's brave.

Speaker:

She's running an alpha

course at her, at her school.

Speaker:

Like, she's just a whole, so

I get like, emotional . Yeah.

Speaker:

Amen. But God has just touched

her in a wonderful way,

Speaker:

and so I've seen in her life.

Speaker:

Amen. Um, God work through you,

Speaker:

and I've seen God just do

something independently of anybody

Speaker:

and just touch her at an altar.

Speaker:

Right. So I've seen both at

Speaker:

play, which I'm really thankful for both.

Speaker:

- Well, pray for us. We have

three young children now. Okay.

Speaker:

Yeah. And we're on that

journey, and my wife

Speaker:

and I were just talking

about it last night,

Speaker:

and one of our kiddos in

particular we're like, okay, Lord,

Speaker:

what systems and structures

do we need to put in place?

Speaker:

But we felt a real strong sense in 2025,

Speaker:

we wanna pray more

strategically for our children.

Speaker:

And that testimony is so beautiful, Ken,

Speaker:

and whatever age your

children are, my children,

Speaker:

for listeners too, that we

would ask God for wisdom

Speaker:

and insight, how to help them Yeah.

Speaker:

Personally, experience God,

whatever that looks like,

Speaker:

because that's what changes people's

Speaker:

lives, and that's what changes us.

Speaker:

And, and that's how we become

into the full expression of

Speaker:

who God's made us to be.

Speaker:

- Yeah. Wonderful. Yeah.

Speaker:

So you got people who are

listening who are struggling.

Speaker:

Yeah. Um, they're in the thick of it,

Speaker:

so they're scared about the future.

Speaker:

They're discouraged,

they're really battling.

Speaker:

They, you might, they might not say I

Speaker:

have mental health issues.

Speaker:

Yeah. But they're battling. Right? Right.

Speaker:

They're not, they're not. Well.

Speaker:

So when would be a cue for someone to

Speaker:

go reach out to a professional such

Speaker:

as yourself or someone in that field?

Speaker:

- Well, first I wanna say, you

know, fill word's with you,

Speaker:

and he wants to help you.

Speaker:

The cross is vertical

Speaker:

and horizontal, so God

is always there to help.

Speaker:

Um, but, but the horizontal

part is he brings

Speaker:

people into our lives.

Speaker:

We're only as strong

as our supporting cast.

Speaker:

So no matter what you're going

through today, you need help.

Speaker:

We all need help, and God

wants to send us help,

Speaker:

but one of the most powerful

Speaker:

and practical ways he

sends us help is people.

Speaker:

Hmm. So I think no matter who you are,

Speaker:

we all need that support and cast.

Speaker:

And I think that's the first step.

Speaker:

So if you have a friend, a pastor,

Speaker:

or someone else in your life,

they can really speak in

Speaker:

and guide inter direct you to those Right.

Speaker:

Supports. That's what I

love about the local church.

Speaker:

We're, we're becoming really strategic

Speaker:

and wise in being able to guide

Speaker:

and direct people to the right supports.

Speaker:

Yeah. And obviously if you,

if you're really struggling,

Speaker:

it's important, um, to reach

out, you know, there's,

Speaker:

there's, um, emergency numbers

that you can call if you feel

Speaker:

that that's urgent, practically

visiting your doctor,

Speaker:

that's something that's absolutely free

Speaker:

covered by Alberta Healthcare.

Speaker:

That's a great first step.

Speaker:

Or the doc, your doctor can

say, okay, I see these symptoms.

Speaker:

Here's some practical supports.

Speaker:

They might recommend counseling.

Speaker:

Um, sometimes doctors even

have referral to a lower cost

Speaker:

or free counseling too,

so they can steward

Speaker:

or help direct that system.

Speaker:

And, and often we are

really struggling unwell,

Speaker:

we actually need support in helping

Speaker:

us get to the right people.

So I just encourage you to think about

Speaker:

who are those people in your

supporting cast, friends,

Speaker:

mentors, pastors, doctors,

whoever it might be

Speaker:

that can help triage and direct

you to where you need to be.

Speaker:

- And maybe I'll just say,

you know, uh, assume a lot

Speaker:

of people from our who are

listening would be from our

Speaker:

church, is that's kind of

Speaker:

what the role of the local church is.

Speaker:

Right. Your pastors and

the volunteer leaders

Speaker:

who lead small groups and,

Speaker:

and things like that is to

carry your burden with you.

Speaker:

Mm-hmm . Uh, you're not alone in that.

Speaker:

And, you know, I would suggest that a lot

Speaker:

of first step is just, you know, prayer.

Speaker:

Amen. Right. And someone who

you trust, you can say, Hey,

Speaker:

listen, um, you know, we

have a list of, you know,

Speaker:

professional help that

we, we refer people to.

Speaker:

Um, but that's usually after

we meet and we pray mm-hmm .

Speaker:

And, um, it's not, I

would say our first step

Speaker:

is, Hey, see these people.

Speaker:

Yeah. Yeah. You know, it's just like,

Speaker:

I can't do anything, but

maybe these people can't.

Speaker:

No. The first step is, let's

see if God will do something

Speaker:

kind of just in meeting and praying and,

Speaker:

and then, you know, Hey, are you part

Speaker:

of, do you have any friends at church?

Speaker:

Do you have any people

who are lifting you up

Speaker:

and interceding for you

or can walk with you?

Speaker:

And so, yeah.

Speaker:

That community aspect of the

local church is probably an,

Speaker:

an unrealized resource for

Speaker:

so many people in their

mental health. Yeah. Walk.

Speaker:

- It's so true. And I,

I think about myself.

Speaker:

I've been there, man, and

it's been tough, you know,

Speaker:

but it's been amazing how just

reaching out to one person,

Speaker:

it changes your whole landscape.

Speaker:

You feel like you're alone in the dark,

Speaker:

and all of a sudden just talking

Speaker:

to one person brings light

at the end of a tunnel.

Speaker:

I can think of times I've

been so anxious, so depressed,

Speaker:

like I, things I've really

struggled with in my life,

Speaker:

and it's been extremely challenging.

Speaker:

And in those moments, man,

I'm just so thankful, um,

Speaker:

for the people in my life

where I was able to call

Speaker:

and say, I'm really struggling.

Speaker:

Can you help me? And just

having that conversation

Speaker:

and feeling heard

Speaker:

and feeling understood

and feeling supported.

Speaker:

It didn't make everything go away,

Speaker:

but it made things like night

and day better difference.

Speaker:

- Yeah. Yeah. Uh, we see in

scripture multiple examples of,

Speaker:

um, people who are walking

through soul issues.

Speaker:

Right. We see David in

Psalm 42, like, my soul,

Speaker:

why are you so downcast?

Speaker:

You know, why are you so disturbed? Right.

Speaker:

We see, uh, Elijah in one

Kings 19, he's depressed

Speaker:

to the point of asking God

Speaker:

to take his life like he's suicidal.

Speaker:

That's he's suicidal.

Yeah. Even Jesus, right.

Speaker:

Our Lord in, uh, Gethsemane,

uh, you know, he,

Speaker:

he is, he's troubled, right?

Speaker:

His soul, right? Mm-hmm

. Our savior, his soul,

Speaker:

his mind will and emotion

are troubled within him.

Speaker:

And so, uh, we see a biblical example

Speaker:

and normalization of

emotional, you know, and, and,

Speaker:

and mental struggles that,

that are happening with people.

Speaker:

And so the reality is, is people

who are watching listening,

Speaker:

they're just, they're

just walking through that.

Speaker:

So what would you say from your seat,

Speaker:

someone who's listening right now,

Speaker:

and you know, the future is gray.

Speaker:

Yeah. There's lack of

hope. They're discouraged.

Speaker:

Maybe they're anxious or depressed.

Speaker:

Maybe they're not clinically right,

Speaker:

but they are been diagnosed like that,

Speaker:

but they're just sensing, man,

I have no joy for the future.

Speaker:

What would be something,

some practical things

Speaker:

or some encouragement you

could bring them today?

Speaker:

- The number one thing is

hope. That there's always hope.

Speaker:

You know, it's says well known scripture,

Speaker:

right in Jeremiah 29 11.

Speaker:

I know the plans I have for

you declares the hope plans

Speaker:

to give you hope and a future.

Speaker:

And I think you might feel like the

Speaker:

furthest thing away from that.

Speaker:

And I just wanna encourage you,

there's so many people, uh,

Speaker:

with similar stories and testimonies,

Speaker:

because the testimony of

Jesus is a spirit of prophecy.

Speaker:

So I'd encourage you,

number one to know, there's

Speaker:

so many people were, they

were on their last leg.

Speaker:

They were down and out.

Speaker:

And the Bible says, these

light momentary afflictions are

Speaker:

working in eternal weight of glory.

Speaker:

It's my greatest privilege

to walk with people

Speaker:

who are in those moments,

because that's when God shows up.

Speaker:

That's when, when we're at our worst

Speaker:

god's, at his best, yeah.

Speaker:

When we're most desperate,

Speaker:

we're actually the most open to change.

Speaker:

So it's an extremely

challenging place to be,

Speaker:

be It's not fun.

Speaker:

It's very painful. It needs

to be stewarded very well

Speaker:

with practical, medical,

psychological, emotional help.

Speaker:

But it's also a place

where miracles are born.

Speaker:

It's where God shows up

Speaker:

and speaks to you in

Speaker:

ways that you've never heard him before.

Speaker:

It's when there's clarity that

comes and, uh, understanding

Speaker:

and a clear vision for your life.

Speaker:

And I personally can think of

Speaker:

that one particular moment

when I was about 17 years old,

Speaker:

I was in and I was feeling

super depressed, super anxious,

Speaker:

struggling like you wouldn't believe.

Speaker:

And I just remember that a moment

Speaker:

that absolutely marked my life.

Speaker:

And I just felt like God came

Speaker:

and just very practically

Speaker:

through the Bible spoke some

verses and, and a mission

Speaker:

and a mandate for my life.

Speaker:

And I was honestly at the point

where I'm like, okay, Lord,

Speaker:

why do you still have me on this earth?

Speaker:

Or what am I here for? And very

practically with scriptures

Speaker:

and just the Bible, the Lord

really answered that question,

Speaker:

and it's marked my life ever since.

Speaker:

And I, I can think of similar

moments. It wasn't just one.

Speaker:

You know, we go through the

highs and lows of lights.

Speaker:

You know, Psalms 23, you

know, in those valleys,

Speaker:

in those dark places, his

rawness staff, they comfort us.

Speaker:

And, and the shepherd of

our soul, you know, Jesus,

Speaker:

he shows up and just speaks

Speaker:

to us in such incredible ways.

Speaker:

And I could almost tell you any person

Speaker:

who's doing amazing

things for God, you know,

Speaker:

who's, who's in the kingdom.

Speaker:

They had these moments, they

had these defining moments,

Speaker:

and I wish they were on the mountaintops

Speaker:

when everything is great.

Speaker:

But that's usually when we're

like, okay, I'm good God,

Speaker:

I'll just coast and have some fun here.

Speaker:

But it's in the valleys

where God just meets us

Speaker:

and defines our life and our

moments and speaks to us.

Speaker:

So number one, there's hope.

Number two, there's purpose.

Speaker:

That there's a purpose and

plan God has for your life.

Speaker:

And when we reach the end of

ourselves, we find this plan.

Speaker:

And I think that's such

an encouraging thing.

Speaker:

Doesn't feel fun, but reaching

the end of end of ourselves.

Speaker:

And I love what one pastor said,

Speaker:

that's a blessing when

our only option is God.

Speaker:

Yeah. It doesn't feel like a blessing,

Speaker:

but that's one of my favorite

verses often quote, you know,

Speaker:

in terms of counseling

and supporting people,

Speaker:

it's these light momentary reflections.

Speaker:

They're not fun. They don't

feel like it's not great,

Speaker:

but they are working in

eternal weight of glory.

Speaker:

So you'll look back on the

season in these moments

Speaker:

of your life, and I can say four

Speaker:

or five seasons like this for me.

Speaker:

And you'll say, that was the

moment, that was the season.

Speaker:

That was the defining moments

where the Lord spoke to me,

Speaker:

brought clarity, vision, direction.

Speaker:

Yeah. And literally, the

reason I'm here today, sitting

Speaker:

and talking to do this podcast

is those types of moments

Speaker:

where the Lord's met me.

Speaker:

- Yeah. It's powerful. I mean,

that would, would bring a lot

Speaker:

of hope, hope to people in

those spaces that, you know,

Speaker:

you never know what God is

gonna do in those space.

Speaker:

I would say for me, something

similar where I have felt God

Speaker:

and experienced his presence in a way

Speaker:

that have been few times

in my life, was in a season

Speaker:

of grief when my dad passed.

Speaker:

And it was just like, you know, the,

Speaker:

the comfort of the Lord.

Speaker:

I would never would've experienced that.

Speaker:

I'd never experienced the realness

Speaker:

if I didn't go through that suffering.

Speaker:

Now, I don't want that suffering.

Speaker:

No one wants that suffering. Right.

Speaker:

We don't call what is evil Good, right?

Speaker:

Mm-hmm

- .

Speaker:

- But yet God redeemed that moment

Speaker:

and shaped me through that.

Speaker:

And almost anyone that

I can say that I look up

Speaker:

to in the faith who I'd want

my life to emulate theirs

Speaker:

are people who have walked

through suffering and trials and,

Speaker:

and hard moments and,

Speaker:

and have had that, you know,

emotional battles within them.

Speaker:

Right. Um, and so, God,

that seems to be true.

Speaker:

- He'll add two pieces that number one,

Speaker:

we're only strong to supporting cast.

Speaker:

So if you go through alone,

it is not gonna be good.

Speaker:

It's gonna be very rough. Mm.

Speaker:

That, that is not God's

plans, not as well.

Speaker:

The only way to get through

seasons like this is

Speaker:

that supporting cast

the people around you.

Speaker:

So community is absolutely so key.

Speaker:

The other side of things is faith.

Speaker:

I love what one past are

shared recently, he said,

Speaker:

imagine Ken, you had $10 million.

Speaker:

You wrote me a check for like a zillion

Speaker:

- Bucks.

Speaker:

Hold on, just let me sit there

for a little while. . Right?

Speaker:

- Okay.

- Okay,

Speaker:

- Good.

Speaker:

Okay. I hope you have

a good plan with that .

Speaker:

So if you call me up

Speaker:

and say, Hey Joel, I'm gonna

give you a check on Friday

Speaker:

for $10 million, have give it all away.

Speaker:

Just let's say 1 million.

Okay? Okay. Okay. .

Speaker:

So, so am I gonna get excited on Friday?

Speaker:

Am I gonna wait or am I gonna

get excited when you tell me?

Speaker:

Yeah. Because you're a great guy. Yeah.

Speaker:

An awesome guy I can trust. Yeah.

Speaker:

I'm gonna get excited the minute you

Speaker:

tell me, Joel, I'm give

you a million bucks.

Speaker:

I am rejoicing. Yeah. And that's

Romans 8 28, right? It is.

Speaker:

Yeah. Right. So God said

he causes not some things,

Speaker:

not a few things, but all

things to work for good.

Speaker:

He doesn't cause create

chaos and crap in our lives,

Speaker:

but he turns it for good.

Speaker:

So that is the million dollar

check that he's written to us.

Speaker:

When we experience tragedy

difficulty, we have to say, okay,

Speaker:

Lord, thank you for this check.

Speaker:

Thank you. That working great.

All things. Yeah. For good.

Speaker:

I'm not gonna wait till it gets good

Speaker:

to rejoice. I'm rejoicing now.

Speaker:

- Come on. I think that's great, .

Speaker:

If that doesn't give you a little hope,

Speaker:

I'm ooh, I'm ready to go. .

Speaker:

So Joel, why don't you

tell us a little bit about

Speaker:

what you're up to right now

with some of the, the projects

Speaker:

and initiatives that,

that we can expect kind

Speaker:

of coming from you for those

who are listening Yeah.

Who just thought that was

really valuable. Yeah.

What, what can we expect from

Speaker:

- You?

Speaker:

Yeah, so good. Well, my wife

Speaker:

and I are kind of feel assigned.

Speaker:

We have a practice called

Family Life Psychology,

Speaker:

and we're so blessed and fortunate.

Speaker:

We just had our team meeting this morning.

Speaker:

We've got, uh, 10, uh,

Speaker:

registered provisional

psychologists working with us.

Speaker:

And our greatest passion is

supporting, encouraging them.

Speaker:

In addition to that, we

really feel, uh, probably

Speaker:

for at least 15 years, we've

really both felt called

Speaker:

to ministry and supporting people.

Speaker:

So we're actually launching an online

Speaker:

platform called Thrive for Life.

Speaker:

And our passion is

Speaker:

to support people in whatever

their journey might be.

Speaker:

There's gonna be e-course

Speaker:

and supports for, for parenting,

for relationships, uh,

Speaker:

for spiritual growth and development.

Speaker:

We're partnering with churches right now

Speaker:

to develop a Thriving Leaders project.

Speaker:

So for leaders, could it

be in the marketplace?

Speaker:

Could it be in churches,

uh, to be able to learn

Speaker:

and level up their leadership skills both

Speaker:

spiritually and practically.

Speaker:

And as well, we're gonna be,

uh, creating a series of,

Speaker:

of inspiring videos just to

help, uh, people in the body

Speaker:

of Christ reach the full expression

Speaker:

of who God's called and to be.

Speaker:

'cause that really is the target.

Speaker:

That $10 million thing, you know,

Speaker:

I'd give you $10 million

if I could reach the full

Speaker:

expression of who God's made me to be.

Speaker:

And I feel like there's nothing

greater than thriving in

Speaker:

life, spiritually,

emotionally, relationally.

Speaker:

God is call us two thrive.

Speaker:

He's cred us with that

picture in Genesis one

Speaker:

and myself, my wife, our team,

Speaker:

in whatever small role we can play.

Speaker:

We really want to equip the body of Christ

Speaker:

to see every person thrive. Yeah.

Speaker:

- I imagine those hearing

that right now, that idea

Speaker:

of thriving can feel so far off from

Speaker:

where they're at right now through that.

Speaker:

Um, but the hope of that

that's possible. Yeah.

Speaker:

That through God it can happen.

Speaker:

- And that's the story. You know, I,

Speaker:

I've experienced that so

many times in my own life.

Speaker:

And like I said, the testimony

Speaker:

of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy.

Speaker:

So it's so cool when God

is at work in your life

Speaker:

for our listeners, that it

might not be in this moment,

Speaker:

but they're gonna look back

Speaker:

and say, Hey, that was the season.

Speaker:

I often think of David in the cave.

Speaker:

Aon was a very dark time. Right.

Speaker:

You know, you get all his

promises, you're gonna be king.

Speaker:

You're this great warrior.

Speaker:

You've got all of a sudden

invited into a great family,

Speaker:

and all of a sudden everything

turns south as really bad.

Speaker:

And David finds himself

in this very lonely place,

Speaker:

and all these other

people in the same space,

Speaker:

in the same part of life,

you know, they're lonely,

Speaker:

broken down, depressed,

miserable, whatever it is,

Speaker:

they come together and meet 'em

Speaker:

and say, Hey, like, let's

figure something out.

Speaker:

Yeah. And from that, these

Speaker:

lowly people become the most

mighty warriors in history.

Speaker:

You think about the Avengers,

Speaker:

but in real life they became

Speaker:

mighty warrior. You read about him.

Speaker:

- Yeah.

- In, in David's journeys and,

Speaker:

and all the things he's overcome.

Speaker:

And I believe that's the mandate

Speaker:

that the Lord is calling us to as people.

Speaker:

We have our struggles and challenges,

Speaker:

but the Lord takes those challenges.

Speaker:

What the enemy meant for

evil and turns for good,

Speaker:

and not just okay, kind

of good kind of a right.

Speaker:

But we actually become

the oaks of righteousness,

Speaker:

the planting of the Lord,

the Isaiah 61 picture

Speaker:

that helps other people in their journey.

Speaker:

So just even as I share

this, if I rewind 10 years,

Speaker:

it was the people who

helped me get to this point.

Speaker:

Hmm. And there's gonna be people

listening in 10 years from

Speaker:

now, they're gonna be in our chairs.

Speaker:

Yeah. Equipping

Speaker:

and supporting others as

Speaker:

they've gone through

their own process. Yeah.

Speaker:
