In this episode, Grant McHerron and Ewen Levick talk with Nova Group's Jim McDowell, Group Chief Executive Officer and Bec Humble, Group Chief Strategy and Corporate Affairs, about how they see 2022 developing for defence industry and Nova Group.
We start the episode with a discussion on the geopolitical changes in our regional environment with tensions between the USA and China, a worsening threat environment and increased defence spend by most countries in the region. Jim and Bec provide their thoughts on the major issues to watch during 2022 including China's claim on Taiwan, the USA's reduced ability to project force in multiple conflicts, new security alliances and the growing nationalism within the region.
The discussion moves on to the importance of Test and Evaluation, Certification, and Assurance across all aspects of defence industry, the growth of cyber and Australia's ability to defend assets against the various levels of attack being experienced. This leads to the topic of sovereignty, a comparison of policies used by the USA, France and the UK to manage their sovereign defence industries and the approaches Australia should take to develop sovereignty in the most suitable industries.
We wrap the episode with a review of workforce challenges, applying the lessons learned during the pandemic and expectations for workforce development in 2022 and beyond.
