It’s finally looking and feeling like proper winter in the mountains - it’s been cold and snowing!
Temps have not got above zero degrees since we spoke yesterday, and right now it’s around -7 at both Perisher and Thredbo.Perisher has had about 17cm of snow, Thredbo some too, but just a couple cm of the natural stuff. No doubt they’ve been running the snow guns full bore though, as today they open up runs for the first time this season!
They’ll be running the Cruiser and Gun Barrel Chairlifts, stating that the walkabout run is open for skiing and snowboarding, and I reckon we’re all hoping for more to come soon. Perisher will open 7 lifts today - 3 ski carpets, two chairs and two tee’s on front valley, with 4 groomed runs. Charlotte pass looks to have the same 1.5 lifts as yesterday - that’s the Kosi carpet and Kosciuszko triple chair to mid station. Selwyn hasn’t opened yet, but they’ve had almost as much fresh snow as Perisher, so surely it won’t be long now.
So if you are heading out today, it looks like the snow has eased, but it’s going to remain cold, with little chance of it popping above zero degrees. The wind should be mild and it’ll be partly cloudy, perhaps partly sunny too. On the roads, chains are currently required to get to Thredbo, Perisher and Selwyn - it’s been a while since that’s been the case at all three locations and it’s definitely leaving me with a positive feeling.
Further to the positive vibes, more snow is expected from about late Thursday and some cold overnight temps prior should aide the snow makers. So hopefully we see more of all resort areas open up as the week progresses.
