Speaker:I’m Khaki, your faithful fireside companion,
Speaker:and Today’s story is the first of two parts of
Speaker:“Variables” by Roland Jovaik,
Speaker:who wrote this story as a submission for Roar 5, by Bad Dog Books.

Please enjoy:“Variables”
Please enjoy:by Roland Jovaik,
Please enjoy:Part 1 of 2 Every morning started with the same routine;
Please enjoy:a medium, three-quarters full, black coffee from the cafe downstairs.
Please enjoy:Esten watched the other patrons buzz around him as he pretended to enjoy his brew
Please enjoy:through a carefully crafted technique that created the illusion of drinking.
Please enjoy:Elevate, tip forty-five degrees,
Please enjoy:and inhale. His movements were so precise
Please enjoy:that he garnered a few awkward looks with how fluidly he ‘drank’ his coffee.
Please enjoy:This routine was just a single part of his carefully constructed persona.
Please enjoy:He strived to make himself a regular here
Please enjoy:so that if his sentience was ever questioned,
Please enjoy:he would have witnesses and testimonies
Please enjoy:reinforcing his integration into society.
Please enjoy:Corey, the morning barista,
Please enjoy:seemed to have taken quite a liking to him, too.
Please enjoy:This was something he vaguely understood as
Please enjoy:‘having a crush’. This played well into his goal of building good rapport with the staff.
Please enjoy:Through the small-talk that came with being a regular of the cafe,
Please enjoy:Esten had picked up various
Please enjoy:details, such asCorey’s age (twenty-five),
Please enjoy:his favorite drink (half-decaf macchiato), and his sexual preferences
Please enjoy:(men). It did not take the automaton long to notice that Corey’s pulse quickened in his presence,
Please enjoy:or that the fox became clumsy when performing basic tasks.
Please enjoy:These things, he had learned,
Please enjoy:were tells of infatuation.
Please enjoy:What would it be like, Esten mused,
Please enjoy:to become involved with another individual?
Please enjoy:The notion seemed beyond comprehension.
Please enjoy:It wouldn’t do him any good, he thought.
Please enjoy:Emotions were too complex
Please enjoy:and riddled with inconsistencies to be emulated properly.
Please enjoy:“Would you like a top up, Sir?”
Please enjoy:The gears in Esten’s head
Please enjoy:stopped turning for a moment when he looked up to see Corey standing with a carafe of freshly brewed coffee.
Please enjoy:The fox looked so hopeful, it seemed
Please enjoy:a shame to disappoint him.
Please enjoy:Esten ran the tip of his finger along his coffee cup.
Please enjoy:“Corey, was it?” Corey nodded.
Please enjoy:“I would love one.”
Please enjoy:Esten gave a deliberate flick of his tail,
Please enjoy:brushing it against the fox’s.
Please enjoy:It seemed a simple, but effective act of flirting.
Please enjoy:He watched carefully as Corey shivered while pouring from the carafe.
Please enjoy:Esten had been suspicious of Corey’s infatuation for some time,
Please enjoy:and now he was certain of it.
Please enjoy:Coffee overflowed from Esten’s cup and spilled out onto the table.
Please enjoy:Corey yelped sheepishly and muttered “enjoy-your-coffee”
Please enjoy:before running back to safety behind the counter.
Please enjoy:Esten recognized the behavior as being cute,
Please enjoy:but was still mostly unaware of the true implications of the act.
Please enjoy:With a hint of a smile,
Please enjoy:he wiped up the spill with some leftover napkins.
Please enjoy:He was sure to raise his cup
Please enjoy:to the blushing fox behind the counter before he pretended to take another sip,
Please enjoy:adjusting the angles of his beverage accordingly.
Please enjoy:Coffee dribbled down his chin and onto his shirt before he realized
Please enjoy:he’d tipped the cup just a little too far.
Please enjoy:He quickly dabbed himself with some nearby napkins, but the coffee stains had already set in.
Please enjoy:He would have to buy a new shirt on his way home.
Please enjoy:Steam tickled at the delicate receptors in his nose
Please enjoy:—oxygen dihydride, mingled with grounds of Guatemalan coffee
Please enjoy:and a hint of filter paper;
Please enjoy:coffee. To interact
Please enjoy:and act like the people around him, his creator had designed
Please enjoy:his own set of senses that would allow him to react appropriately to the world’s stimuli.
Please enjoy:Esten continued to follow the fox
Please enjoy:in his peripheral senses between sips.
Please enjoy:He caught eyes with Corey more than once,
Please enjoy:and in each instance,
Please enjoy:Corey hurried away to busy himself with stocking the nearby condiment stand, which was
Please enjoy:overflowing with sugar packets and straws.
Please enjoy:Teasing the poor fox
Please enjoy:brought a brief smile to his muzzle and an unfamiliar sense of what he could only interpret as
Please enjoy:‘amusement.’ He took note
Please enjoy:of the fox’s elevated heart rate and rise in body temperature.
Please enjoy:Silly creatures, he thought as he finished
Please enjoy:‘drinking’ his coffee.
Please enjoy:Though Esten’s main objective was to blend in, he had no interest in actually being ‘real.’
Please enjoy:He knew his place in society,
Please enjoy:and the world simply wasn’t ready to acknowledge his existence.
Please enjoy:Esten turned his attention away and was about to pack up
Please enjoy:when the fox approached him with a napkin in hand.
Please enjoy:It was wrinkled within Corey’s tightly clenched fist.
Please enjoy:The mustelid stifled an unexpected giggle.
Please enjoy:He was amused by the situation, though he couldn’t pinpoint why.
Please enjoy:Sensing the presence of any sort of
Please enjoy:genuine emotion within himself had never happened before. In fact,
Please enjoy:he had no reason to believe it was possible until now.
Please enjoy:He shrugged his jacket back on
Please enjoy:and stood as tall as he could manage, coming just a few inches short of the fox’s muzzle at full height.
Please enjoy:“I was just setting out,”
Please enjoy:he stated in a very matter-of-fact sort of way.
Please enjoy:“Oh, well, alright.”
Please enjoy:The fox stood with slumped shoulders for a few moments before clearing his throat
Please enjoy:and drawing attention to the napkin by wringing his paws together.
Please enjoy:“My name’s Corey, by the way.
Please enjoy:I mean, we’ve talked before, but—”
Please enjoy:“I remember,” he interrupted.
Please enjoy:“My name’s Esten,”
Please enjoy:he lifted his paw in a hand-shake motion.
Please enjoy:“I know. Er, I mean, um...” Corey shook the ferret’s hand while keeping the napkin held close to his chest.
Please enjoy:His paw was tense and Corey seemed unable to function while in physical contact with the ferret.
Please enjoy:Esten nodded toward to the napkin.
Please enjoy:“Is that for me?” Corey looked down at the napkin held tight in his paw,
Please enjoy:then at the floor as he held it out.
Please enjoy:“Yes, for you. I mean,
Please enjoy:if you want it. If you wanted to meet up. I mean,
Please enjoy:aside from here—”
Please enjoy:Esten took the wrinkled paper from Corey’s paw,
Please enjoy:letting their fingers brush together, yet another simple act of flirting.
Please enjoy:He could practically see Corey’s heart beating out of control
Please enjoy:inside his chest, even without his heightened senses.
Please enjoy:The fox retreated back to the counter before Esten could say anything more.
Please enjoy:He tucked the napkin into his jacket for later.
Please enjoy:Having friends would help him fit in,
Please enjoy:and this was as good a start as any.
Please enjoy:Esten retreated to his complex above the cafe
Please enjoy:to collect his thoughts.
Please enjoy:The apartment was small and sparsely furnished.
Please enjoy:His desk sat in the far corner,
Please enjoy:a small dining room table was pushed up against the kitchen wall, and a large brown armchair sat in the living room with a couch that sat perpendicular to the window.
Please enjoy:Keepsakes from his late master
Please enjoy:sat upon the window sill, outlining his unobstructed view
Please enjoy:of downtown. He strode over to the window where his diary also sat,
Please enjoy:next to a plain wooden box.
Please enjoy:The box had always been somewhat of a mystery to Esten.
Please enjoy:His father had given specific instructions that the box was not to be opened until the he felt the time was right.
Please enjoy:When that time would be, Esten thought he might never know.
Please enjoy:He didn’t concern himself with the details. The box was a box,
Please enjoy:and would continue to be a box after he opened it.
Please enjoy:There was no reason to question his master’s wishes.
Please enjoy:Scratches filled the room as he scribbled his thoughts out,
Please enjoy:his writing not much different than that of a typewriter.
Please enjoy:May 25, 2014 9:47 AM - The barista
Please enjoy:downstairs, Corey,
Please enjoy:approached me with his phone number.
Please enjoy:It is my understanding that he wishes to initiate courting.
Please enjoy:My programming is currently insufficient to deal with such a complex ritual.
Please enjoy:Additional research will need to be completed before making any further progress.
Please enjoy:His creator had always told him to keep a diary;
Please enjoy:a memoir of his thoughts, in case anything were to happen to him,
Please enjoy:and as a way of practicing dialog and communication. He had
Please enjoy:argued against the practice, but his master had been adamant.
Please enjoy:Even though his creator was long gone,
Please enjoy:Esten continued to write in his diary as a testament to his father,
Please enjoy:as his creator had insisted he be called.
Please enjoy:Esten closed the cover to his notebook
Please enjoy:and stood from his desk.
Please enjoy:Perhaps he would stop by the book store later today.
Please enjoy:The Art of Dating and Gun Maintenance,
Please enjoy:by E.C. Escher. The book had scored highly with customer reviews
Please enjoy:and seemed the most appropriate for Esten’s unique situation.
Please enjoy:In ten minutes he had managed to flip through each individual page and put it back on the shelf.
Please enjoy:All of the information it had to give him was now stored permanently within his memory banks.
Please enjoy:Esten took his leave,
Please enjoy:parsing through page after page of dating advice.
Please enjoy:The book had taught him much, but there were
Please enjoy:so many questions unanswered,
Please enjoy:and even more subjective concepts that he could not understand
Please enjoy:with no equations or quantifiable facts to guide his calculations.
Please enjoy:Make your partner feel special.
Please enjoy:Bring them flowers.
Please enjoy:Page sixtyseven, line thirty-four. Be yourself.
Please enjoy:Page ninety, line four.
Please enjoy:Since Esten had no real personality of his own,
Please enjoy:he would have to construct one based on previous encounters with people
Please enjoy:and that of his late father.
Please enjoy:The book went on to explain the theoretical situations that arose during courtship
Please enjoy:and how one was expected to react.
Please enjoy:It was full of contradictory information and all of it seemed ludicrous, in theory or in practice,
Please enjoy:but the reviews had assured guaranteed results and he had little more to go on
Please enjoy:than long-winded text
Please enjoy:and the tales of others’ victorious conquests.
Please enjoy:He had waited two days, as the book suggested,
Please enjoy:before picking up his phone.
Please enjoy:The break in his daily routine felt odd.
Please enjoy:It was unusual to be away from the cafe for so long.
Please enjoy:When his fingers went to dial the number he hesitated.
Please enjoy:A sliver of doubt seeped into his mind.
Please enjoy:Surely the book’s logic did not apply to everyone.
Please enjoy:Maybe he had waited too long to call and Corey did not want to get together after all.
Please enjoy:Ridiculous, he thought,
Please enjoy:shaking his head free from his own thoughts. He hit send.
Please enjoy:The phone rang three times.
Please enjoy:“Hello?” The voice was definitely Corey’s.
Please enjoy:“Hi,” Esten replied.
Please enjoy:“Oh, hey.” Corey paused.
Please enjoy:“Who’s this?” “It’s Esten.”
Please enjoy:“Esten!” There was a loud clatter and a frantic rustling as the fox’s excited squeak slipped through the speaker. “Hi.
Please enjoy:I was beginning to think I wasn’t going to hear back from you.” “I’ve been busy,”
Please enjoy:he lied. Don’t let on that you’re interested.
Please enjoy:Page one-hundred seventy-three,
Please enjoy:line eighty-six. There was an awkward silence between them that Corey took the liberty of breaking.
Please enjoy:“So, did you want to grab some drinks tonight?”
Please enjoy:Take them someplace nice.
Please enjoy:“How about San Andrea’s up on Charleston?”
Please enjoy:“That ritzy uptown place?”
Please enjoy:Corey’s voice wavered.
Please enjoy:“I don’t know if I can afford that.”
Please enjoy:Put up, and they’ll put out.
Please enjoy:Research told him the phrase was a euphemism for sex,
Please enjoy:which he thought resembled prostitution by its most literal definition.
Please enjoy:Nevertheless, he wanted to explore every aspect of dating.
Please enjoy:“It’s on me. What do you say?” “I dunno,
Please enjoy:I’m not so great in a suit and tie.”
Please enjoy:Be persistent. “We’ll have a good time.”
Please enjoy:Even he didn’t think that sounded convincing when he said it.
Please enjoy:“Well, alright,” Corey caved.
Please enjoy:“Pick me up at seven?”
Please enjoy:“It’s a date.” He hit the call button and tucked the phone back in his pocket.
Please enjoy:Esten had picked up a suit for the occasion.
Please enjoy:Thanks to his lack of need for food,
Please enjoy:heat and other normal essentials,
Please enjoy:he had plenty of money stashed away for unplanned expenditures such as this.
Please enjoy:Esten rolled up
Please enjoy:in a small luxury sedan,
Please enjoy:a parting gift from his master.
Please enjoy:Corey came out dressed in a purple button-up shirt with a red tie,
Please enjoy:visibly embarrassed when he walked up to the car and noticed Esten in his formal attire.
Please enjoy:The fox’s attire was a far cry from the suit Esten had been able to afford.
Please enjoy:Corey walked up to the car,
Please enjoy:wringing his hands out in front of him.
Please enjoy:“You look nice,” he said,
Please enjoy:stepping into the passenger side.
Please enjoy:Give them compliments, make them feel important.
Please enjoy:“Not as nice as you, Handsome.”
Please enjoy:It had almost been a direct quote from the book.
Please enjoy:The words felt awkward rolling off the android’s tongue,
Please enjoy:but Corey’s cheeks lit up and his heart rate increased considerably.
Please enjoy:As far as he could understand,
Please enjoy:the compliment had the desired effect.
Please enjoy:“Sorry I couldn’t find anything nicer to wear on such short notice,”
Please enjoy:Corey murmured as he slipped into the passenger seat.
Please enjoy:His tail was curled into his lap
Please enjoy:and he looked very self-conscious about how he was dressed.
Please enjoy:Esten shifted the car into gear,
Please enjoy:giving Corey a sideways glance
Please enjoy:“You’re dressed adequately.
Please enjoy:I don’t see why there would be an issue.”
Please enjoy:Insecurities were yet another thing Esten could not truly comprehend.
Please enjoy:“Well, yeah, for the restaurant...”
Please enjoy:Corey trailed off, looking out at the passing cars.
Please enjoy:Esten saw no reason to question the matter further.
Please enjoy:They had both made the effort to dress up and dinner would go according to protocol.
Please enjoy:They pulled into the parking lot.
Please enjoy:Esten released his buckle as soon as the car was in park and turned to Corey.
Please enjoy:“Stay there.” He stepped out of the car and made his way around the car to open the passenger door.
Please enjoy:Open doors for them.
Please enjoy:Corey managed an awkward smile as he stepped out.
Please enjoy:“Oh, thank you. You didn’t have to,”
Please enjoy:he protested. Esten put the hours he’d spent practicing the perfect fake smile in the mirror to use,
Please enjoy:articulating his jaw in just the right way to come off as sincere.
Please enjoy:“It’s no trouble at all.”
Please enjoy:Awkward stares followed them into the restaurant
Please enjoy:as the two males walked in with locked arms and continued to do so when they strode up to the podium.
Please enjoy:An otter standing by the podium looked to Esten and then to Corey with a raised eyebrow.
Please enjoy:Esten paid them no mind,
Please enjoy:but Corey had tucked his paws into his pockets.
Please enjoy:He looked to the floor with his posture slouched
Please enjoy:and his tail tucked between his legs.
Please enjoy:“Reservation under Saquan,”
Please enjoy:Esten stated clearly.
Please enjoy:The otter spoke, his voice was stuffy and rehearsed,
Please enjoy:much like Esten’s fake genuine smile.
Please enjoy:“Saquan, here we are.
Please enjoy:Your reservation is for eight o’clock, so we don’t have a table just yet.
Please enjoy:If you could sit over there please, we’ll call you.”
Please enjoy:Demonstrate your affection.
Please enjoy:Esten walked towards the fox and put an arm around his waist.
Please enjoy:Corey turned away from Esten and sat an awkward distance apart on the waiting couches.
Please enjoy:“People are already staring.
Please enjoy:I don’t want any more attention right now,”
Please enjoy:Corey muttered, his eyes darting to anyone he thought might be watching.
Please enjoy:“Does it matter?” He tried again to brush against the fox’s paw,
Please enjoy:but Corey quickly withdrew himself again.
Please enjoy:“Esten, please! I’m not comfortable here.”
Please enjoy:His black-tipped ears were plastered against his head
Please enjoy:and his paws clutched tightly around his tail.
Please enjoy:“What do they matter?”
Please enjoy:He waved from the podium to the dining room.
Please enjoy:Worrying about the opinions of others was such a trivial matter.
Please enjoy:“Did you not intend for this to be a date?”
Please enjoy:The question was born of genuine curiosity.
Please enjoy:Maybe Esten had misinterpreted after all.
Please enjoy:Corey’s brow furrowed
Please enjoy:as his ears went even lower, if that were possible.
Please enjoy:“No, it’s not—look,
Please enjoy:I don’t want to attract any more attention, okay?”
Please enjoy:It seemed useless to press the issue further, so Esten let it be,
Please enjoy:waiting patiently for their table to be ready.
Please enjoy:The otter approached them a while later with a patterned napkin draped over his right arm.
Please enjoy:He glanced at Corey before deliberately turning to acknowledge Esten to speak.
Please enjoy:“Your table is ready, Mr. Saquan. Right this way.”
Please enjoy:Esten stood and offered the fox a paw up.
Please enjoy:Corey brushed it away and stood of his own accord.
Please enjoy:He followed several steps behind,
Please enjoy:tail still tucked between his legs and slunk into the chair opposite of the ferret.
Please enjoy:Corey nearly dropped his menu the moment he opened it.
Please enjoy:“Esten, I can’t possibly afford this.
Please enjoy:Look at the appetizers, they’re half of my week’s paycheck!”
Please enjoy:The otter scoffed and walked away,
Please enjoy:off to belittle the next couple that walked in the door.
Please enjoy:Put up, and they’ll put out.
Please enjoy:“There’s no need to worry about that.
Please enjoy:that.” Esten saw no problem in footing the bill.
Please enjoy:Money was of little consequence to him.
Please enjoy:As far as he was concerned, the discussion was closed.
Please enjoy:“I don’t want you to do this for me. I’d be happier getting a burger down the street.
Please enjoy:This is too much.”
Please enjoy:“I said I’ll take care of it.” His ear twitched with what
Please enjoy:his
Please enjoy:father would have called annoyance.
Please enjoy:He didn’t understand how Corey could be upset by the prices if he wasn’t paying for the meal.
Please enjoy:Corey mumbled something under his breath and buried his nose in the menu,
Please enjoy:not saying another word.
Please enjoy:Esten occupied himself with the wine menu just in time for the server to step up
Please enjoy:and introduce himself.
Please enjoy:A fox, a few inches taller than Corey, stood straight and proper with pen and paper in hand.
Please enjoy:His fur was perfectly groomed beneath his immaculate silk shirt.
Please enjoy:He seemed to shine in the dull candle-lit restaurant and did well to compliment the fox’s lithe frame.
Please enjoy:“Hello, my name is Andre, I’ll be your server for this evening.
Please enjoy:Can I start you off with one of our house wines?”
Please enjoy:Esten tipped the wine menu back and pointed to a particularly expensive item.
Please enjoy:“Yes, we’ll have the Chateau Margaux, please—”
Please enjoy:“Esten!” Corey’s voice peaked and his heckles came up in an instant.
Please enjoy:“Two glasses,” he finished with a glance over at Corey
Please enjoy:who obviously took issue with his decision.
Please enjoy:“Excellent choice,”
Please enjoy:Andre scribbled on his notepad and seemed to glide away from the table, off to retrieve the wine.
Please enjoy:“Esten,” Corey piped up again,
Please enjoy:“why do you insist on doing this?”
Please enjoy:Esten flipped the wine menu face down on the table
Please enjoy:and picked up the dinner menu,
Please enjoy:tracing over the food items while only occasionally glancing up at the fox.
Please enjoy:“I can choose to spend my money how I please.
Please enjoy:I choose to spend it on a pleasant evening with you.
Please enjoy:Is this not what you wanted?”
Please enjoy:“No! Well, not like this.”
Please enjoy:His ears flattened back against his head.
Please enjoy:“I’m really out of my element, if you haven’t noticed.
Please enjoy:I don’t feel welcome here.”
Please enjoy:“You’re being ridiculous,”
Please enjoy:Esten said, unable to contain a sigh as he put the menu down.
Please enjoy:He recognized the emotion as
Please enjoy:‘exacerbation.’ It clouded his thoughts and made him clench his fists against the arm of his chair.
Please enjoy:It was an unpleasant feeling.
Please enjoy:In all the years he’d been studying people and their emotions,
Please enjoy:he’d never come across any of his own.
Please enjoy:How was it that he being plagued with them now?
Please enjoy:In the midst of their bickering, he had already decided what he wanted for dinner.
Please enjoy:“Can we not just have a nice meal together without all the worry?”
Please enjoy:“Easy for you to say, Suit-And-Tie,”
Please enjoy:he spat. “Look, maybe we can go somewhere else when this is over?”
Please enjoy:“If you wish.” The fox came back with two glasses in one paw
Please enjoy:and a bottle of wine in the other.
Please enjoy:He uncorked the bottle in front of him
Please enjoy:and allowed Esten to have first whiff of the bottle.
Please enjoy:When he nodded in approval,
Please enjoy:Andre poured the wine into each glass, letting his gaze linger on Corey as he did so.
Please enjoy:Corey shifted in his seat,
Please enjoy:reaching shakily for the wine glass that had been poured for him.
Please enjoy:Esten could not react fast enough for what he saw coming a mile away;
Please enjoy:the droid watched as Corey’s wineglass tumbled towards him
Please enjoy:as it fumbled from his shaky paws, spilling over the table and onto the fox’s shirt and pants.
Please enjoy:Corey shrieked and the waiter let out an exasperated sigh.
Please enjoy:“I’ll get you something to wipe off with,”
Please enjoy:he muttered before walking off to the kitchen.
Please enjoy:Before the ferret could say anything
Please enjoy:Corey jumped from his seat
Please enjoy:and ran from the restaurant with his hands over his face.
Please enjoy:Esten didn’t need a book to tell him this date was going horribly wrong.
Please enjoy:He threw a hundred on the table for the wine they would no longer finish together
Please enjoy:and followed him outside.
Please enjoy:The fox’s sobs were easily heard over the quiet nightlife.
Please enjoy:He caught a glimpse of the vulpine’s tear-streaked cheeks
Please enjoy:before Corey wiped them away, mussing his tufts of fur up further.
Please enjoy:Corey glanced over, but said nothing,
Please enjoy:leaving the two in awkward silence until Esten felt compelled
Please enjoy:to try and save the situation that had gone so awry.
Please enjoy:“I can get that dry-cleaned for you.”
Please enjoy:He nodded to the discolored patch of wine that surrounded Corey’s crotch.
Please enjoy:Corey wiped away another tear before glaring at Esten.
Please enjoy:“I don’t care about a dry-cleaning bill, Esten!
Please enjoy:I wasn’t comfortable there.
Please enjoy:Could you not see how they were looking at me?
Please enjoy:I obviously wasn’t welcome.
Please enjoy:If it wasn’t for you I’m sure they would’ve tossed me out on my end without a word.”
Please enjoy:“Again with the self-consciousness,”
Please enjoy:Esten grumbled to himself,
Please enjoy:pinching the bridge of his muzzle with two fingers.
Please enjoy:“But they didn’t. Are their opinions that important to you?
Please enjoy:You’ll never see those people again.”
Please enjoy:“I didn’t want to see them in the first place!”
Please enjoy:His voice echoed against the walls,
Please enjoy:leaving a light ringing that quickly faded out of existence.
Please enjoy:New tears streaked his face
Please enjoy:as he balled his fists.
Please enjoy:“I told you I didn’t want to,
Please enjoy:but you wouldn’t listen.
Please enjoy:You seemed perfectly content throwing your money around while paying no mind to anyone around you, including me!” Corey turned on his heel and stormed off down the walkway, away from where Esten had parked the car. “Where are you going?”
Please enjoy:Asked Esten. He didn’t turn
Please enjoy:around. “I’m going home.”
Please enjoy:“Your place is miles from here.
Please enjoy:Let me drive you.”
Please enjoy:“I’ll walk,” he spat bitterly.
Please enjoy:So much for research.
Please enjoy:“Too many variables,” he muttered.
Please enjoy:People simply had
Please enjoy:too many attributes
Please enjoy:that just couldn’t be calculated or measured.
Please enjoy:He walked back to his car,
Please enjoy:the engine coming to life as he hit the button on his fob.
Please enjoy:Life for Esten continued as it always did.
Please enjoy:The sun still rose
Please enjoy:and the coffee shop was still there when he arrived the next morning.
Please enjoy:Except that when Esten stepped into the cafe at his usual time,
Please enjoy:Corey was nowhere to be seen.
Please enjoy:The shop was devoid of the fox’s bashful cheer
Please enjoy:and somehow that made the little downstairs shop feel like a different place entirely.
Please enjoy:The rest of the day, however,
Please enjoy:would proceed as normal.
Please enjoy:This was the first of two parts
Please enjoy:of “Variables” by Roland Jovaik,
Please enjoy:read for you by Khaki, your faithful fireside companion.
