“The Sacred Cross”

Please enjoy:

by Pascal Farful

Please enjoy:

It was a cold and foggy autumn night

Please enjoy:

and Samantha was tending to her laboratory.

Please enjoy:

It was located in the rural outskirts, somewhere where there was no light polution.

Please enjoy:

Her equipment contained various tools and devices, but chiefly contained a light magnifier,

Please enjoy:

capable of reaching a significantly high temperature.

Please enjoy:

She was a grey wolf with thick long, black hair

Please enjoy:

and was clad in a jacket,

Please enjoy:

gloves, a skirt and knee-high boots, all made of a skintight and shiny black rubber,

Please enjoy:

due to the level of mud

Please enjoy:

and other unpleasantness around the sight of the lab

Please enjoy:

meaning these were easy to clean if needed,

Please enjoy:

plus she found them very comfortable as well. A quiet, certainly

Please enjoy:

shy one, she cut a short, slender figure, the all black writing cheques for mystique that her manner couldn’t cash.

Please enjoy:

From the window by her desk she could see lots of stone ruins,

Please enjoy:

various rocks coated in moss

Please enjoy:

and deep in the soft marsh land.

Please enjoy:

And as she looked out of the window that evening, something caught her eye.

Please enjoy:

All of the tablets were moss-ridden,

Please enjoy:

wet and vaguely rotting.

Please enjoy:

Except for one. And out of the corner of Samantha's eye she'd always see it.

Please enjoy:

A large cross with a circle around it's spokes.

Please enjoy:

Something just looked...

Please enjoy:

wrong about it. Sure, she was no expert on architecture but it seemed to fit thematicly with the others

Please enjoy:

but... it seemed brighter...

Please enjoy:

clearer than the others.

Please enjoy:

But again, she was sat fairly far away and couldn't see it too close.

Please enjoy:

The wolf had decided to keep it out of mind and focus on her works.

Please enjoy:

As she had done for the past month or so now.

Please enjoy:

Her tests were nearing completion,

Please enjoy:

when once, while she was working,

Please enjoy:

she heard a knock at the door downstairs.

Please enjoy:

She got to her feet

Please enjoy:

and went down to check.

Please enjoy:

Samantha opened the door a crack and peered out,

Please enjoy:

but nobody was there.

Please enjoy:

She looked to the left

Please enjoy:

and the right,

Please enjoy:

up and down. But nobody could be seen.

Please enjoy:

She closed the door and went to go back upstairs again, but to her bemusement,

Please enjoy:

the knocks came again.

Please enjoy:

With a humpf she returned to the door, this time opening it wide and taking a deep look.

Please enjoy:

Her eyes noted grass patches,

Please enjoy:

wooden fence, a gnome,

Please enjoy:

back along the fence

Please enjoy:

and down to the pa- The gnome was gone.

Please enjoy:

Her heartrate doubled.

Please enjoy:

It was there. She saw it with her own eyes.

Please enjoy:

But now it wasn't.

Please enjoy:

She looked down beside her

Please enjoy:

and there it was.

Please enjoy:

It's posture had changed.

Please enjoy:

It had moved while she wasn't looking.

Please enjoy:

Samantha gulped, knees knocking together.

Please enjoy:

She didn't know what to do, but she kept her eyes on it firmly.

Please enjoy:

After a minuet or so of deliberation, she nervously reached down with her rubber gloved paws

Please enjoy:

and picked it up,

Please enjoy:

holding it permanently in her eyeline.

Please enjoy:

It had sunken eyes,

Please enjoy:

red ones. It didn't look the least bit "jolly",

Please enjoy:

it looked vicious.

Please enjoy:

She closed the door with her foot,

Please enjoy:

bolting it, keeping an eye permanently on the gnome.

Please enjoy:

Samantha moved it into the small makeshift kitchen

Please enjoy:

and placed it down on the sideboard.

Please enjoy:

Once it was placed down,

Please enjoy:

she took a few steps back.

Please enjoy:

Instinctively, she looked behind her,

Please enjoy:

squeaking and looking ahead again when she realised her mistake.

Please enjoy:

She couldn't see the gnome again,

Please enjoy:

but she could see where it'd gone,

Please enjoy:

to her mild annoyance,

Please enjoy:

it had landed right in a large vat of washed onions she was preparing.

Please enjoy:

The bowl was deeper than the gnome was, so it was trapped in there.

Please enjoy:

Even when she looked away

Please enjoy:

and she could hear it struggling and battering at it,

Please enjoy:

it didn't have the mass to tip it over,

Please enjoy:

not the ability to climb out on the slippery, smooth and wet sides of the container.

Please enjoy:

With the gnome under control, she nervously moved back to the door,

Please enjoy:

the sound of the gnome's fighting growing weaker.

Please enjoy:

Looking out the door,

Please enjoy:

her eyes fell on the cross.

Please enjoy:

Her heart filled with dread as it seemed to look different again.

Please enjoy:

Brighter... almost. She moved across to put a lid on the gnome in the pan

Please enjoy:

and locking it down, not bothering to look at it,

Please enjoy:

just making sure it couldn't escape.

Please enjoy:

The knocking had stopped on the sides, but she didn't want it to jump out at her.

Please enjoy:

With every form of fastening and fixing she could find,

Please enjoy:

she opened the door and slipped outside,

Please enjoy:

opening the door for the smallest amount of time as possible

Please enjoy:

and the smallest amount open as possible,

Please enjoy:

closing it immediately afterwards

Please enjoy:

and locking it. The air outside was cold,

Please enjoy:

and it bit at her knees and her thighs and loins under her skirt.

Please enjoy:

Her eyes scanned the forests and the marshes around her as she moved,

Please enjoy:

minding her footing

Please enjoy:

as she approached the cross.

Please enjoy:

It seemed... clean, almost brand new perhaps.

Please enjoy:

It was made of the same sort of dark rock as the others but...

Please enjoy:

lacked any form of growth.

Please enjoy:

But... more than that...

Please enjoy:

the area surrounding it seemed to repel any form of life from it like

Please enjoy:

antibiotics in a petri dish.

Please enjoy:

She could see algae trying to reach it

Please enjoy:

and just dying within a sort of circular area around it.

Please enjoy:

Samantha made sure not to get too close,

Please enjoy:

just in case it did it to her too.

Please enjoy:

She stepped back from the cross,

Please enjoy:

convinced it had something to do with the gnome.

Please enjoy:

Upon spinning around to go back inside, she jumped

Please enjoy:

and clutched her hands to her chest,

Please enjoy:

fists clenched, discovering a field of more gnomes,

Please enjoy:

at least ten, maybe more like twenty had assembled before her. With nowhere to

Please enjoy:

go but straight ahead, she ran back through them to the house, locking the door behind her

Please enjoy:

and cowering against the wall behind it.

Please enjoy:

She could hear the thundering sound of their little feet on the ground outside.

Please enjoy:

She could hear them battering at the door, but,

Please enjoy:

she noticed, without the ability to batter it down.

Please enjoy:

They were weak, but they were numerous.

Please enjoy:

Samantha quickly remembered the one in the saucepan,

Please enjoy:

grabbing some tongs and flinging the lid open.

Please enjoy:

To her amazement,

Please enjoy:

the gnome had practically dissolved into a sludgey liquid inside the bottom of the pan.

Please enjoy:

It was then that she knew what she had to do.

Please enjoy:

She took a knife,

Please enjoy:

a vast one and one of the onions she hadn't cut up yet,

Please enjoy:

She sunk the knifeblade into the onion, coating it in the juice,

Please enjoy:

then returning to the door.

Please enjoy:

She threw open the door

Please enjoy:

and began the attack.

Please enjoy:

The knife wouldn't cut the gnomes, more knock them down, but it was the onion juice which did the job.

Please enjoy:

Once even a drop touched them,

Please enjoy:

they began to scream in agony and melt, howling and withering in pain until they became puddles of matter,

Please enjoy:

soon burning to embers and ashes.

Please enjoy:

It was difficult to fight something so small without being toppled,

Please enjoy:

having to jump around briskly and catch them unaware,

Please enjoy:

striking one down,

Please enjoy:

jumping to the other side, striking another and jumping again.

Please enjoy:

But soon, the gnomes were dead and their screams faded into the rustlings of the trees.

Please enjoy:

She checked that none had escaped inside,

Please enjoy:

then locked her door

Please enjoy:

and looked up the path to the cross.

Please enjoy:

And she knew what she had to do.

Please enjoy:

The cross had started to glow

Please enjoy:

and had a certain stench of death about it.

Please enjoy:

She reapplied the onion juice to the blade of her knife as she approached it.

Please enjoy:

Once stood before it,

Please enjoy:

she raised the blade over her head,

Please enjoy:

clutched in both paws

Please enjoy:

and plunged it into the neck of the cross.

Please enjoy:

The blade sunk all the way deep and out from the depths came a thick,

Please enjoy:

boiling purple sludge.

Please enjoy:

Before it could touch her,

Please enjoy:

she released the knife

Please enjoy:

and jumped aside.

Please enjoy:

She was startled to a scream by a bolt of lightning striking the top of the cross.

Please enjoy:

At this point, she began to flee,

Please enjoy:

running back towards the house, stopping when she reached the door

Please enjoy:

and looking back up the hill

Please enjoy:

at the bleeding cross.

Please enjoy:

Lightning continued to strike it, before one bolt made a constant hit at the top ebb,

Please enjoy:

then another to it's left point

Please enjoy:

and a final one to its right.

Please enjoy:

The cross emitted a banshee-like howling scream, before exploding in a shower of

Please enjoy:

dust. Samantha recoiled her form against the door,

Please enjoy:

having no time to get inside and

Please enjoy:

once the dust settled,

Please enjoy:

looked up to see that the cross had been obliterated.

Please enjoy:

She stood there, heart battering at her ribcage,

Please enjoy:

eyes darting around for any consequences to her actions.

Please enjoy:

The fog began to lift

Please enjoy:

and the dust from where the cross once stood

Please enjoy:

began to evaporate off,

Please enjoy:

lifting up into the sky,

Please enjoy:

revealing a small metal plaque

Please enjoy:

under the pile of ash.

Please enjoy:

Curiosity consumed her.

Please enjoy:

She shouldn't, she knew she shouldn't.

Please enjoy:

But she had to know.

Please enjoy:

She started to step forth again,

Please enjoy:

leaning down to read the plaque.

Please enjoy:

"Here lies Joanne Miles,

Please enjoy:

keeper of the Sacred Cross" it read.

Please enjoy:

Beneath the plaque

Please enjoy:

was a small box. No...

Please enjoy:

no no none of this could really be real...

Please enjoy:

could it? Mystic bleeding crosses,

Please enjoy:

gnomes that attacked her...

Please enjoy:

and now some little box.

Please enjoy:

She started talking herself out of opening the box as her paws held it

Please enjoy:

and flicked the latch.

Please enjoy:

The box sprung open...

Please enjoy:

and reeked. She dropped it and fell to the ground, believing, nay, fearing it to be poison.

Please enjoy:

As her body remained...

Please enjoy:

shaken but operational,

Please enjoy:

she finished opening the box.

Please enjoy:

Within was little more than a mouldy onion...

Please enjoy:

explaining at least,

Please enjoy:

in some mystic but nonsense way

Please enjoy:

why her trick with the knife had worked earlier.

Please enjoy:

She wrapped the box in cling film,

Please enjoy:

all she had to hand,

Please enjoy:

took it inside and encased it in the safe downstairs.

Please enjoy:

Finally, she locked the door and took a final look out to the graveyard,

Please enjoy:

where that cross used to stand,

Please enjoy:

life used to rot.

Please enjoy:

If there was any magic left in this place,

Please enjoy:

Samantha would have to face that

Please enjoy:

in the morning… The End.
