Most people think budgeting is 100% about the math
2
:they think that if they just find the
right spreadsheet or the right software,
3
:that the anxiety will simply disappear.
4
:But here's the secret.
5
:Budgeting is actually 90% mindset.
6
:If you're still carrying around
the, we can't afford that script
7
:from decades ago, no amount of math
is going to make you feel secure.
8
:Hello again, and welcome back
to the Money Clarity Podcast.
9
:If you're new around here.
10
:I'm Lindsey.
11
:I'm your resident budget nerd, crazy
cat lady and lover of all things purple.
12
:In today's episode, we are going to
dive into the emotional side of your
13
:finances and how to start uncovering.
14
:The real blocks around money and what
you can do to start making shifts.
15
:Okay, so today we're talking about
your money story or the script that
16
:is running in the background of your
mind that dictates how you spend, how
17
:you save, and more, most importantly,
how you feel about your money.
18
:Your money story is the narrative
you've been carrying around with
19
:you since you were a little kid.
20
:Your money story started
the day you were born.
21
:Maybe you grew up hearing things
like, we can't afford that, or
22
:Money doesn't grow on trees.
23
:Maybe you were taught that
money is the root of all evil.
24
:When these old money stories are in
charge, we end up living in a constant
25
:state of anxiety and fear of money.
26
:I mean, why would you feel comfortable
with money when these are the
27
:thoughts that are on repeat for you?
28
:So how do we first begin to
recognize these stories and second,
29
:actually start to change them?
30
:It starts with simply getting
curious and becoming aware,
31
:and then getting intentional.
32
:All right, so let's start with two tips to
start identifying your own money stories.
33
:Tip number one, pay attention
to your gut reaction.
34
:The next time you're at the
store or looking at a bill,
35
:pay attention to the very first
thought that pops into your head.
36
:Is it a feeling of there's never enough?
37
:Is it a sense of guilt for
spending money on yourself?
38
:Or maybe it's a physical
tightening in your chest.
39
:Your body often knows your money story
before your brain actually recognizes it.
40
:Start noticing these moments of tension
as they are often signs that your old
41
:narrative is just under the surface.
42
:And with a little bit of digging,
you'll be able to see what
43
:those stories are telling you.
44
:Tip number two, take a moment
to complete this sentence.
45
:So I want you to take out a
piece of paper or open a note
46
:app on your phone and finish this
sentence without overthinking it.
47
:Money is.
48
:What was the first thing
that popped into your mind?
49
:Whatever it was.
50
:Whether it's money is hard to get,
or money is easy to lose, or money
51
:is a source of stress That is likely
a core pillar of your money story.
52
:Now don't judge it.
53
:Just look at it with
curiosity and awareness.
54
:We can't change what we don't
acknowledge or don't even know is there.
55
:So once you've started to become
aware of your money stories,
56
:how do we start to make changes?
57
:Here are two things you can do right now
to begin rewriting your money script.
58
:First of all.
59
:Embrace the reframe.
60
:Now, I personally deal with scarcity
money blocks on a regular basis.
61
:This is one of the biggest ones
that comes up for me, so I know
62
:how loud that we can't afford it.
63
:Voice can be, but what if
you changed the language.
64
:Remember how I said in the beginning
that budgeting is 90% mindset?
65
:So instead of saying, I can't
afford that, try saying.
66
:That's not a priority for me right now.
67
:Do you feel the difference?
68
:One feels like a dead end.
69
:The other feels like a choice.
70
:You are taking the power back from money
and putting it back into your own hands.
71
:You are now in control rather
than the other way around.
72
:My second tip for today is to give
your money a goal that lights you up.
73
:It is so much easier to change your
habits when you are running towards
74
:something that you love rather
than running away from something.
75
:This is the power of a tangible goal.
76
:Whether it's a dream trip for your
40th birthday, maybe a kitchen
77
:renovation, or finally hiring a VA
to take those soul sucking tasks
78
:off your plate, put a name to it.
79
:When your dollars have a job that actually
excites you, the old fearful stories
80
:start to lose their weight because your
vision for the future is simply louder.
81
:at the end of the day, you are
the author of your money story.
82
:It doesn't matter what your current
story is, you have the power to
83
:start stepping into a life where
your finances actually feel aligned
84
:with what's most important to you.
85
:It's not about being
perfect with a spreadsheet.
86
:It's about giving yourself
permission to dream and then using
87
:your money as a tool to get there.
88
:You are so incredibly capable of creating
a relationship with your money that feels
89
:peaceful, confident, and dare I even say
fun again, it doesn't matter what your
90
:past story is, you just have to choose
to start writing a new story today.
91
:So if you're ready to dive a little
bit deeper into what we've started
92
:today, head over to my website and
