Busy podcasters know that there's always more that can be done.
Speaker:Fans of busy podcasters know that too, often trying to be helpful
Speaker:by highlighting new opportunities.
Speaker:Which, while nice, can lead to burnout.
Speaker:Today's episode is brought to you by the Advancing Podcasting
Speaker:community at advancingpodcasting.xyz.
Speaker:Because why would I do anything?
Speaker:It's a special community just for listeners and readers of
Speaker:Podcast Pontifications and as populated by like-minded working
Speaker:podcasters just like you who also want to make podcasting better.
Speaker:You're already listening to the show.
Speaker:So why not extend the conversation and your influence
Speaker:on the future of podcasting?
Speaker:Join us today at advancingpodcasting.xyz.
Speaker:Hello, and welcome to another Podcast Pontifications with me, Evo Terra.
Speaker:Astute listeners will notice that the sound of today's and yesterday's
Speaker:episode is, well, different.
Speaker:And that's because I'm in San Diego!
Speaker:Woohoo!
Speaker:Mere steps away from the beach.
Speaker:And it's awesome.
Speaker:I did this to escape the heat.
Speaker:Obviously, I live in Phoenix full-time, as you know, and it's really hot there.
Speaker:But also to recharge.
Speaker:Yeah, I've got to recharge and I get a recharge when I sit out and look at the
Speaker:ocean that is behind me every single day.
Speaker:Now, recharging is important to me and also a compromise I made
Speaker:with myself a few years back, and it's really paying off, I think.
Speaker:And that's because I'm no longer trying to do everything or be everywhere, even
Speaker:though a lot of people really want me to - no, let's use the word expect me to.
Speaker:You know, I hear people quite often say, "I don't know how you do it, Evo.
Speaker:I don't know how you do the thing that you do.
Speaker:I don't know how you publish a daily podcast that takes up four
Speaker:hours of your time every day."
Speaker:Which is a true statement.
Speaker:Also, "You're doing that, you're publishing it the same day that you
Speaker:are recording it and producing it?
Speaker:That's also dumb.
Speaker:That's - how do you do that?
Speaker:And then also maintain and run a podcast consultancy, which does lots of things
Speaker:for clients all around the world?"
Speaker:And that's true.
Speaker:I do all of those things.
Speaker:Weirdly enough, those same people have no trouble offering up a list of other
Speaker:things that they think I should be doing.
Speaker:And, for some, expect me to be doing.
Speaker:Now, luckily for me, and I'm kind of laughing this off is that I'm
Speaker:the kind of person who, I really like it when people approach me with
Speaker:new ideas and new opportunities.
Speaker:And that's because I'm really good at saying no and passing up on
Speaker:opportunities that either aren't a good fit or would stretch me to
Speaker:thin, which is more often the case.
Speaker:That may describe you, but it might not.
Speaker:For a lot of time, I had a tough time saying no to opportunities.
Speaker:And you may be in a similar situation, especially if you're relatively
Speaker:new to the podcasting world and you're, quite smartly, trying to
Speaker:increase your luck surface area.
Speaker:Something I talk about from time to time, which is good.
Speaker:That's smart of you to do that because for you being everywhere, and trying
Speaker:to connect with everyone, if you can, is a great way to network and
Speaker:accelerate your growth as a podcaster.
Speaker:And that's true.
Speaker:Yes.
Speaker:Maybe you're seeing some modest success with your podcasting efforts
Speaker:and you're thinking of investing more time and more energy so you
Speaker:can reap more of those rewards.
Speaker:Once again, good for you.
Speaker:Another smart play.
Speaker:Or it could be that opportunity just drops in your lap sometimes.
Speaker:That's how the universe works on occasion.
Speaker:Then maybe there's a potential pot of gold or whatever it is that
Speaker:motivates you right over there.
Speaker:All you have to do to get it is just do more, which again, if you
Speaker:can and want to do that, great.
Speaker:Smart play.
Speaker:But there's a chance, a good chance, that something I said in that last
Speaker:little rant there might've triggered some feelings of anxiety, stress,
Speaker:insecurity, or just full-on, "Oh shit, how am I going to get all of this done?"
Speaker:Now, look, feeling some of those things is helpful, right?
Speaker:There is a kernel of truth in the "No pain, no gain" comment.
Speaker:But let me impart another nugget, another wisdom pearl, if you will.
Speaker:Opportunity will knock again.
Speaker:It will.
Speaker:I mean, sometimes it's the exact same opportunity presenting itself again.
Speaker:Perhaps you'll be in a better place emotionally and mentally
Speaker:to accommodate it then.
Speaker:Other times, it's a totally different opportunity.
Speaker:One that you could not have fit in to your already busier schedule if you had
Speaker:rushed to shove in that first opportunity.
Speaker:How could you fit that in and this new thing as well?
Speaker:Occasionally, you realize that passing up on an opportunity is in itself as much of
Speaker:an opportunity for you to refocus on your own mental health, which will keep you
Speaker:in the podcasting game that much longer.
Speaker:I'm living proof of this.
Speaker:The ability to say, "No thanks," or, "No, not right now" is a big
Speaker:part of why I've been in this game for - gosh, nearly two decades now.
Speaker:Insane.
Speaker:And I hope to stay in it for the next two with that kind of attitude.
Speaker:Your mental health is just that your health.
Speaker:So focus on it.
Speaker:And just like that, we've gone through another month of Podcast
Speaker:Pontifications Season Four.
Speaker:Thank you for being with me.
Speaker:If you found value in any of the thoughts and ideas I presented to you thus far,
Speaker:well, please return some of that value by going to BuyMeACoffee.com/evoterra.
Speaker:Next week, at least as of this recording, is Podcast Movement, and no,
Speaker:I will not be joining you in person.
Speaker:See everything I've just talked about in this episode.
Speaker:But I will, however, see some of you from my living room where I'll
Speaker:be watching the event virtually.
Speaker:I blocked off the days from my calendar, and I'm looking forward to
Speaker:attending lots of different sessions.
Speaker:So with that, I shall be back on Monday with yet another Podcast Pontifications.
Speaker:Cheers!
