Shownotes

Today we're looking at First Samuel Chapters 21 through 24, and Psalm seven and 27. I know it's a lot to cover, but I really appreciate having these narratives alongside the Psalms that were most likely written by David at that time.

Chapter 24 will be our main focus today. It would seem that David would have every right to take Saul's life at this point. It could be seen as self-defense. God has told him he's to be king, and God has promised to remove Saul's kingship, but David trusts God and His Sovereignty.

:

Welcome to The Dwelling Place from Entrusted Ministries.

2

:

I'm Stephanie Cock.

3

:

Today we're looking at First

Samuel Chapters 21 through

4

:

24, and Psalm seven and 27.

5

:

I know it's a lot to cover, but I really

appreciate having these narratives

6

:

alongside the Psalms that were most

likely written by David at that time.

7

:

In chapter 21, David is fleeing for

his life and he comes to knob, which

8

:

is the city of the priest, and in an

attempt to protect his life, he tells a

9

:

lie to convince a him elect the priest,

that he's alone on a mission from Saul.

10

:

He asks for some bread, but all that

remains is holy bread, which was

11

:

intended to be eaten only by the priest.

12

:

Alek decides to provide David with

them, And thankfully, in three

13

:

of the gospels, Jesus affirms

that this was the right decision

14

:

But David's lie will

have severe consequences.

15

:

A Alek gives him Goliath's sword.

16

:

And then David ends up acting

insane before the Philistines.

17

:

Also, as he's trying to save his life.

18

:

In chapter 22, verse two tells us

that everyone who was in distress, in

19

:

debt, bitter in soul, gathered to him

and he became commander over them.

20

:

This word bitter is sometimes translated

as discontented, but literally

21

:

means the emotional response to a

destructive heart crushing situation.

22

:

God allowed David to shepherd

them before he even became king.

23

:

They found hope in his leadership.

24

:

Do you recall that Ruth was a Moabite?

25

:

She's the great, great

grandmother of David.

26

:

So when David is concerned for his family,

he goes to the King of Moab and asks

27

:

him to keep his father and mother safe.

28

:

He honorably takes

responsibility for them.

29

:

Saul finds out that a alek, the

priest protected David, although

30

:

Alek was innocent, because Saul

is so paranoid and jealous, he

31

:

commands his men to kill the priest.

32

:

Thankfully they say no, but do.

33

:

But do egg, the mite might corruptly

kills 85 priests, and then men, women,

34

:

children, infants, and livestock.

35

:

The Edomites are the descendants

of Esau, and they're rarely

36

:

represented favorably in scripture.

37

:

When Saul was supposed to kill and

destroy to obey the Lord, he didn't.

38

:

But here, when it's

absolutely unrighteous,

39

:

he orders the killing of the people

that he should have protected.

40

:

And

41

:

when God said that Eli's line would be cut

off, Saul's sin actually helps accomplish

42

:

that, but it's not to his credit.

43

:

The son of a Alek, Abby Athar

escapes and finds David and David.

44

:

Feels awful abby AAR stays and serves

David for the rest of his life,

45

:

but if ever we needed confirmation.

46

:

That lying can have destructive results.

47

:

We find it here.

48

:

Then St.

49

:

Philistines are harming

the people of Caala.

50

:

David asked the Lord,

should I defend them?

51

:

And God says yes.

52

:

And just to make sure he prays again god

gives him victory and then he hides there.

53

:

But then he's concerned that he's

going to cause the city harm.

54

:

If he stays there, he prays again and

God says, Saul's gonna come for you, and

55

:

this people will surrender you up to him.

56

:

So David Flees once again,

he's been on the move a lot.

57

:

In this chapter, we read that Saul

sought David every day, but God

58

:

did not deliver him into his hand.

59

:

God's protection throughout

this book is incredible.

60

:

And even though Saul can't

find David, Jonathan does.

61

:

He comes to encourage David affirming

that he knows David will be king and

62

:

they make a third covenant together.

63

:

Saul is closing in on David, but again, in

the sovereignty of the Lord, a messenger

64

:

comes and tells him that the Philistines

have attacked SA leaves, and that place

65

:

became known as the Rock of Escape.

66

:

Because of the way that

God provided a way out.

67

:

And next we'll read how absolutely

honorable David seeks to be

68

:

before the Lord as he patiently

waits for the fulfillment of

69

:

God's promise of the kingship.

70

:

Chapter 24 is our main focus for today.

71

:

Speaker 26: When Saul returned

from following the Philistines,

72

:

he was told, behold David is

in the wilderness of in Getti.

73

:

Then Saul took 3000 chosen men out of

all Israel and went to seek David and

74

:

his men in front of the wild goats rocks.

75

:

And he came to the sheep folds,

by the way, where there was a cave

76

:

and saw went into relief himself.

77

:

Now, David and his men were sitting in

the innermost parts of the cave, and

78

:

the men of David said to him, here's

the day of which the Lord said to you.

79

:

Behold, I will give your enemy and

into your hand, and you shall do to

80

:

him as it shall seem good to you.

81

:

Then David arose and stealthily

cut off a corner of Saul's robe.

82

:

And afterward, David's heart

struck him because he had cut

83

:

off a corner of Saul's robe.

84

:

He said to his men, the Lord forbid

that I should do this thing to my Lord.

85

:

The Lord's anointed to put out

my hand against him, seeing

86

:

he is the Lord's anointed.

87

:

So David persuaded his men with these

words and did not permit them to attack

88

:

Saul and Saul rose up and left the

cave and went on his way afterward.

89

:

David also arose and went out of the cave

and called after Saul, my Lord the king.

90

:

And when Saul looked behind

him, David bowed with his face

91

:

to the earth and paid homage.

92

:

And David said to Saul, why do

you listen to the words of men who

93

:

say, behold, David seeks your harm?

94

:

Behold, this day, your eyes

have seen how the Lord gave you

95

:

today into my hand in the cave.

96

:

And some told me to kill

you, but I spared you.

97

:

I said I will not put out my hand against

my Lord, for he is the Lord's anointed.

98

:

See my father, see the corner of

your robe in my hand for by the

99

:

fact that I cut off the corner of

your robe and did not kill you.

100

:

You may know and see that there is

no wrong or treason in my hands.

101

:

I have not sinned against you,

though you hunt my life to take it.

102

:

May the Lord judge between me and you.

103

:

May the Lord avenge me against you,

but my hand shall not be against you.

104

:

And continuing in verse 16, as soon as

David had finished speaking these words

105

:

to Saul, Saul said, is this your voice?

106

:

My son, David?

107

:

And Saul lifted up his voice and wept.

108

:

He said to David, you are more righteous

than I for you have repaid me good.

109

:

whereas I have repaid you evil and you

have declared this day how you have

110

:

dealt with me and that you did not kill

me when the Lord put me into your hands.

111

:

for, if a man finds his enemy,

will he let him go away safe?

112

:

So may the Lord reward you with good

for what you have done to me this day,

113

:

and now behold, I know that you shall

surely be king and that the kingdom of

114

:

Israel shall be established in your hand.

115

:

Swear to me, therefore, by the Lord,

that you will not cut off my offspring

116

:

after me, and that you will not destroy

my name out of my father's house.

117

:

And David swore this to Saul.

118

:

Then Saul went home, but David and

his men went up to the stronghold.

119

:

Speaker 32: It would seem that

David would have every right to

120

:

take Saul's life at this point.

121

:

It could be seen as self-defense.

122

:

God has told him he's to be king, and God

has promised to remove Saul's kingship.

123

:

And this feels so reminiscent

of that moment that Saul grabbed

124

:

Samuel's robe and tore apart off.

125

:

And Samuel told him this day, God

has torn the kingdom from you.

126

:

Surely this moment with David

has reminded him of that.

127

:

But David trusts the sovereignty of God

and doesn't take it into his own hands,

128

:

knowing that God will bring about his

plans for David and as moms, I think

129

:

we can look to the hand of the Lord

in this story to give us encouragement

130

:

that whatever God has for us and for our

kids, we can trust him to bring it about.

131

:

We don't need to manipulate

opportunities or carry the pressure

132

:

upon ourselves that it's up to us to

bring about God's plans for our kids.

133

:

We can walk in faithfulness and watch

the doors that he opens for them, but

134

:

when he closes them, we can encourage

our kids even when it feels unfair.

135

:

When they're just right for the part

or the spot on the team, or when they

136

:

rightfully run the race and don't get the

credit, we can trust that God will use

137

:

all of these moments to build up their

character and prepare them for what he

138

:

does have for them, because ultimately

139

:

it's not about their reputation

140

:

or their credentials.

141

:

It's about them serving

and dwelling with the Lord.

142

:

In all of these trials, God is teaching

David and he's teaching us and our kids.

143

:

Let's not stand in the way

of the good but hard lessons.

144

:

He wants to teach them.

145

:

In this context of David Fleeing for his

life, I'm also going to read Psalm 27

146

:

that we believe was written at this time.

147

:

Speaker 26: The Lord is

my light and my salvation.

148

:

Whom shall I fear?

149

:

The Lord is the stronghold of my life.

150

:

Of whom shall I be afraid when evil

doers assail me to eat up my flesh?

151

:

My adversaries and foes.

152

:

It is they who stumble and fall though

an army and camp against me, my heart

153

:

shall not fear though war arise

against me, yet I will be competent.

154

:

One thing have I asked of the Lord

that will I seek after that I may dwell

155

:

in the house of the Lord all the days

in my life to gaze upon the beauty of

156

:

the Lord and to inquire in his temple.

157

:

For He will hide me in his shelter.

158

:

In the day of trouble, he will conceal

me under the cover of his tent.

159

:

He will lift me high upon a rock,

and now my head shall be lifted

160

:

up above my enemies all around me.

161

:

And I will offer in his tent sacrifices.

162

:

With shouts of joy, I will sing

and make melody to the Lord.

163

:

Hear oh Lord, when I cry aloud,

be gracious to me and answer me.

164

:

You have said, seek my face.

165

:

My heart says to you, your

face, Lord, do I seek hide?

166

:

Not your face from me.

167

:

Turn not your servant.

168

:

Away in anger.

169

:

Oh, you who have been my help.

170

:

Cast me.

171

:

Not off forsake me.

172

:

Not oh God, of my

salvation for my father.

173

:

And my mother have forsaken me,

but the Lord will take me in.

174

:

Teach me your way, oh Lord.

175

:

And lead me on a level path.

176

:

Because of my enemies, give me an

add up to the will of my adversaries.

177

:

For false witnesses have risen against

me and they breathe out violence.

178

:

I believe that I shall look

upon the goodness of the Lord

179

:

in the land of the living.

180

:

Wait for the Lord.

181

:

Be strong and let your heart take courage.

182

:

Wait for the Lord.

183

:

Speaker 33: Our hope isn't just in heaven.

184

:

God is good to us here as

well for today's prayer.

185

:

I'm going to guide us through

some sections of Psalm seven.

186

:

Oh Lord our God, we take refuge in you.

187

:

Will you deliver us

from all who pursue us?

188

:

That would seek our harm, Lord, if

there's any evil in our hands, if

189

:

we've harmed anyone without cause, we

understand we deserve consequences, but

190

:

we pray if our accusers are unjust,

that you would arise and bring justice.

191

:

You establish the righteous and

you test our minds and hearts.

192

:

And though you feel indignation every

day, you are not swayed as we are.

193

:

So we trust in your righteous judgment.

194

:

We will give you the thanks that

you are due and sing praise to the

195

:

name of the Lord the most high.

196

:

May we walk in faith that we will

see our goodness on this earth.

197

:

For ourselves and for our children,

and help us to wait patiently dwelling

198

:

with you, gazing upon your beauty,

and bringing sacrifices of joy.

199

:

It's in the name of Jesus that we pray.

200

:

Amen.
