Greasing the Groove: The Smarter Way to Build Strength as You Age

What if getting stronger didn’t require crushing yourself in the gym?

In this episode of The Healthy CEO, Jason Wright kicks off a new series on strength, muscle, and longevity by exploring one of the most practical strength-training concepts he’s encountered: “Greasing the Groove,” popularized by legendary strength coach Pavel Tsatsouline.

As we age, maintaining strength and lean muscle becomes increasingly important—not simply for how we look, but for how well we function. Muscle supports metabolic health, physical resilience, mobility, and our ability to continue doing the things we love as we get older.

But building strength doesn’t necessarily mean training to exhaustion.

Pavel’s Greasing the Groove philosophy approaches strength differently: treat strength like a skill and practice it frequently without exhausting yourself.

Jason breaks down the philosophy before sharing Pavel’s explanation of why frequent, high-quality repetitions can train the nervous system to become more efficient at producing strength.

In This Episode

  • Why strength training should be a cornerstone of longevity
  • The importance of maintaining lean muscle as we age
  • Why Jason is placing a greater emphasis on building strength
  • Pavel Tsatsouline’s philosophy of simply getting stronger
  • What “Greasing the Groove” actually means
  • Why strength can be viewed as a skill
  • The difference between spaced practice and cramming
  • How repeated practice strengthens the neural pathways between the brain and muscles
  • Why you don't need to train to failure to get stronger
  • Pavel’s concept of using a weight that is “heavy enough to respect and light enough not to fear”
  • Why Greasing the Groove typically uses only about half the repetitions you could perform
  • How frequent, non-exhaustive strength work can accumulate significant training volume
  • Why staying fresh may allow you to practice strength more frequently
  • How to incorporate Greasing the Groove into a normal day
  • Why Pavel recommends significant rest between sets
  • The relationship between strength, practice, skill acquisition, and neurological adaptation
  • Why the goal is the perfect rep, not simply more reps

The Basic Greasing the Groove Concept

Rather than performing a traditional workout where you exhaust a muscle group, Greasing the Groove emphasizes practicing a strength movement repeatedly while remaining relatively fresh.

Pavel describes a general approach of:

Moderately heavy weight.

Low repetitions.

High-quality reps.

Long rest periods.

Frequent practice.

Avoiding exhaustion.

The objective is to repeatedly practice the movement so the nervous system becomes increasingly efficient at producing it.

In Pavel's words, you're essentially “greasing” the neurological groove between your brain and your muscles.

Over time, the same movement can require less effort—or you can apply greater force and become stronger.

A Practical Example

If you could perform approximately eight maximum reps with a given weight, a Greasing the Groove approach might have you perform only three or four high-quality repetitions.

Then you stop.

You rest.

And later, you practice the movement again.

Instead of asking:

“How hard can I train?”

The better question becomes:

“How frequently can I practice strength while still staying fresh?”

That subtle change in thinking is what makes Greasing the Groove such an interesting approach to building sustainable strength.

Jason's Takeaway

As we get older, strength becomes increasingly valuable.

This isn't about chasing a bodybuilding physique or spending your life in the gym. It's about creating a body capable of supporting the life you want to live.

Jason is experimenting with new ways to increase his own strength and lean body mass, and this episode begins a larger Healthy CEO series exploring the training methods, tools, and strategies that can help us remain strong and capable as we age.

The message is simple:

Get stronger. Stay strong. And practice strength for life.
