Amy:

Hey there today.

Amy:

We're going to talk about the 10 things that you need on

Amy:

your plan, your visit page.

Amy:

on your museum's website.

Amy:

A lot of times, this page has your visitors first experience with your museum

Amy:

and you want to make a good impression.

Amy:

Let's get started.

Amy:

Hello, and welcome to the Love my Museum podcast.

Amy:

I'm your host Amy Kehs, and I love museums.

Amy:

I also am a brand strategist and communications expert, and I've been

Amy:

working in museums for over 30 years.

Amy:

Today, we're going to talk about the plan your visit page on your website.

Amy:

Every museum website should have an easy to find plan your visit page.

Amy:

On your homepage, there should be multiple buttons that take visitors to this page.

Amy:

Now, this sounds like a no brainer, but you wouldn't believe how many

Amy:

websites do not have this information.

Amy:

Easily accessible for people that are coming to your website to plan

Amy:

their first visit to your museum.

Amy:

You don't want to frustrate visitors before they even get to you.

Amy:

Before they even walk through your museums doors.

Amy:

So for those visitors that are trying to plan things.

Amy:

Make it easy for them.

Amy:

The first five things that we're going to talk about.

Amy:

These are a must, these five things must be on your plan, your visit.

Amy:

Website page.

Amy:

The first of these is directions and transportation.

Amy:

You should provide clear directions to your museum.

Amy:

A map has a great idea.

Amy:

You should include public transportation options.

Amy:

Parking information.

Amy:

Everything that they need to know.

Amy:

To get to your museum.

Amy:

The second thing that is a must on your plan.

Amy:

Your visit page is accessibility information.

Amy:

Make sure that you include information.

Amy:

For visitors.

Amy:

That may need special accommodations.

Amy:

I hope that your museum is in a building that is 100% accessible,

Amy:

but if it is not make sure you have that information on your website.

Amy:

The third.

Amy:

Must have is admission information.

Amy:

Let visitors know how much it costs to visit your museum.

Amy:

Are reservations required.

Amy:

Are there any discounts that are available?

Amy:

Is it possible to buy tickets ahead of time?

Amy:

And is that something that you recommend.

Amy:

The fourth thing is rules, regulations, and tips for a comfortable visit.

Amy:

So answering questions like is food allowed?

Amy:

What about selfie sticks?

Amy:

How about strollers?

Amy:

If you are an art space.

Amy:

Do you allow bags?

Amy:

Or do you have a coat check in a bag check?

Amy:

Do you accept cash or were only credit for admission?

Amy:

Do you provide lockers?

Amy:

Make sure that everyone is prepared.

Amy:

You want people to show up and feel welcome.

Amy:

And part of that is.

Amy:

Not being surprised by the answers to some of these questions.

Amy:

And of course the.

Amy:

Must must have is your hours of operation?

Amy:

Make sure you include your museums hours of operation, including any

Amy:

special hours for holidays or events.

Amy:

And make sure you can keep this up-to-date.

Amy:

I visited a museum this summer with my daughter and despite our best planning.

Amy:

Including.

Amy:

Looking on their website, checking their social media.

Amy:

We still showed up to find out that they were closing for a special event that day.

Amy:

We had already.

Amy:

Driven to the location we had already paid for parking.

Amy:

And we found out that they weren't closing in 10 minutes.

Amy:

That's really frustrating and can definitely.

Amy:

Discourage people from visiting you.

Amy:

In the future.

Amy:

Once you're sure that these five must haves are easy to

Amy:

find and there are clear.

Amy:

You can add these five.

Amy:

A little more advanced planning tips for the more detailed planners that

Amy:

might be coming to your website.

Amy:

The first to help those detailed planners would be some information

Amy:

on your exhibits and collections.

Amy:

What are your must sees?

Amy:

This will be different than the special or temporary exhibits that you may

Amy:

be talking about on your homepage.

Amy:

Think of these as like the signature things that you think

Amy:

all visitors must experience.

Amy:

The second thing would be, are there any additional tickets that they

Amy:

might want to purchase ahead of time for extra things like movies,

Amy:

special exhibits or other experiences?

Amy:

You don't want them to get to here museum to find out that.

Amy:

One of these extras is sold out.

Amy:

And that they won't have a chance to do it that day.

Amy:

The third thing is if you have a cafe or a gift shop, Make sure that

Amy:

you provide information about that, including the hours of operation.

Amy:

Any special offerings.

Amy:

If you don't have a dining facility, then let visitors know if there is anything

Amy:

nearby that maybe they should consider.

Amy:

Maybe you can have a partnership with the cafe around the corner.

Amy:

The fourth thing is membership information.

Amy:

Let visitors know about membership options that might save them money on their visit.

Amy:

If they invest ahead of time.

Amy:

And the last thing is contact information.

Amy:

Maybe this is a phone number or the email address of.

Amy:

The person in charge of school visits.

Amy:

Anything that if they have additional questions, they'll be

Amy:

able to get in touch with you.

Amy:

Okay.

Amy:

So that's my top 10 tips for things that should be on your

Amy:

plan, your visit website page.

Amy:

But I have a bonus tip.

Amy:

The bonus tip is ask if they want to sign up for your email list here too.

Amy:

Now we'll talk about an email list more in future episodes.

Amy:

But you should start an email list.

Amy:

This will be a way that you can communicate with the

Amy:

visitors that are about to come.

Amy:

And also after they've left.

Amy:

Asking people to let you into there.

Amy:

Email inbox is a big ask and they should get something for that.

Amy:

So, Maybe if they give you.

Amy:

Their email address, they get 10% off admission.

Amy:

Or a discount in the gift shop something like that.

Amy:

So there you are.

Amy:

There are my 10 tips and one.

Amy:

Bonus tip.

Amy:

It's really important that visitors feel welcome from even before

Amy:

they get to your front door.

Amy:

You want them to know that you're excited that they're visiting you and

Amy:

you want to make their planning process for their visit as easy as possible.

Amy:

I hope that these top 10 updates that you can do quickly and easily

Amy:

to your website will improve your visitors experience with your museum.

Amy:

And help them to fall in love with your museum.

Amy:

I hope that this summer series of shorter episodes with

Amy:

actionable items has been helpful.

Amy:

As always, I really appreciate you listening.

Amy:

And I'll see you next time.
