Speaker:

Hey everybody.

2

:

Welcome back to another edition

of the Daily Bible podcast.

3

:

Happy Saturday.

4

:

Hopefully everybody's

enjoying your Saturday today.

5

:

Some eggs and bacon, maybe some pancakes.

6

:

Yeah, with some blueberries inside.

7

:

Yep.

8

:

That's a good Saturday.

9

:

Yep.

10

:

Do you remember Saturday morning cartoons?

11

:

Very much, man.

12

:

Wasn't that the best time ever?

13

:

Absolutely.

14

:

I think the world is lesser for not

having Saturday morning cartoons.

15

:

I agree.

16

:

Yeah.

17

:

'cause the cartoons that exist now just

aren't the same as they used to be.

18

:

They might.

19

:

You could stream them all like one

season in your living room on a.

20

:

Thursday afternoon if you want.

21

:

Yeah.

22

:

The specialness of waking up on

Saturday and watching one of your

23

:

favorite X-Men shows or whatever.

24

:

Teenage Meat Ninja Turtles.

25

:

TMNT.

26

:

Yeah.

27

:

That's, those are the good old days, man.

28

:

And you had to wait a whole week not

to find out what was gonna happen.

29

:

You could not stream them

and if you missed them.

30

:

Yeah.

31

:

That's the beauty of

old school television.

32

:

Yeah.

33

:

The kids these days,

they'll never know that.

34

:

And I feel bad for my kids about that.

35

:

And the commercials after these

messages, we'll be right back.

36

:

The commercials were

some of the best parts.

37

:

Yep.

38

:

They were entertaining.

39

:

And the theme songs, crossfire?

40

:

Yeah.

41

:

Yeah.

42

:

That was good days.

43

:

Oh yeah.

44

:

That thing with the

little guns and the sil.

45

:

Wow.

46

:

You remember that nostalgia.

47

:

See, yeah.

48

:

I had that.

49

:

That was fun.

50

:

Cartoons are crazy nowadays.

51

:

In fact.

52

:

So different.

53

:

There's one that's gaining popularity.

54

:

I, full transparency, I haven't watched it

more than once or twice the whole season.

55

:

A few a hundred times.

56

:

You haven't watched the

season more than three times?

57

:

See, I in one city.

58

:

I think it's a movie.

59

:

I think it's a movie.

60

:

I thought it was a.

61

:

Cartoon TV series.

62

:

I looked it up online.

63

:

I think it's a movie.

64

:

Anyways, now that we've completely

undermined our authority to be

65

:

able to speak to this issue well,

we don't have to know the show

66

:

to answer the question though.

67

:

That's true.

68

:

So let's go to the question,

'cause this is really relevant.

69

:

Speaking of Saturday morning cartoons,

the question is this, how should

70

:

Christians think through the K-pop

demon hunters, K-pop, demon hunters.

71

:

All right.

72

:

K-Pop demon hunters.

73

:

Yeah, I'm gonna answer.

74

:

Carefully on this.

75

:

Number one, this is there, there

is freedom in Christ on this.

76

:

And there's no verse that

says, thou shalt not.

77

:

And this goes back to, I, I remember

when I was in college, one of my wife's

78

:

friends had a Harry Potter book in

her dorm room on her shelf, and she

79

:

was accused of being a witch because

she had a Harry Potter on her shelf.

80

:

I understand that.

81

:

Spoiler alert she wasn't a witch actually.

82

:

She was just an a person and

she likes to read the story.

83

:

And so this is not new to,

to look at something in.

84

:

Pop culture and media and say, Hey,

what is the, what do we do with this?

85

:

It seems to be, there's some

dark images, dark themes in here.

86

:

Should we be okay with this?

87

:

Should we not be okay with this?

88

:

Parents listening to this is where

your discernment has to come into play,

89

:

and you have to be involved in this.

90

:

You have to make a decision

one way or another.

91

:

Don't let.

92

:

Entertainment happen to your kids.

93

:

That's not a good job.

94

:

You are abdicating your role.

95

:

If you give your kids the iPad, give your

kids access to the tv, and then you walk

96

:

away and you're not actively involved

in what they're watching, say it again.

97

:

Even if they're on Disney Junior

or they're on something like that

98

:

you can't abdicate that role.

99

:

That's your role.

100

:

You can't let them be the guard of

what is coming into your kids' minds.

101

:

So that said.

102

:

You need to do research on this and

figure out what, this is what I've read.

103

:

For me and my household we haven't

watched this, I don't think we will.

104

:

I read online it talked about

engagement in the demonic.

105

:

They're literally fighting demons in here.

106

:

There's scenes where demons are

sucking the souls, out of some

107

:

of the people in this, they're

fighting demons though, right?

108

:

They're fighting.

109

:

The heroes are fighting the demons.

110

:

The heroes aren't the demons.

111

:

Okay.

112

:

You sound like good, the good people then.

113

:

Yeah.

114

:

It's just for me it's, do I wanna

open the door into the darkness

115

:

of these themes into my home?

116

:

Yeah.

117

:

And so for me, we've said no.

118

:

I'm not saying that has to be the

conclusion for everybody across the

119

:

board, that's just where we are.

120

:

But I think that the

principle that I wanna stress.

121

:

Behind this is regardless of what it

is, whether it's this or bluey, right?

122

:

You as parents need to have an active

role into what you are letting into

123

:

your home and understand that you are

by turning on the TV or giving them

124

:

that app on the iPad, you are allowing

voices into your home and you need to

125

:

know what those voices are talking about.

126

:

That's my take on it.

127

:

Pr that's a great take.

128

:

Let me preface everything I'm about

to say with one Corinthians 10.

129

:

All things are lawful.

130

:

But not all things are helpful.

131

:

All things are lawful, but

not all things build up.

132

:

Let no one seek his own good,

but the good of his neighbor.

133

:

Paul's talking about food here,

and of course this section ends

134

:

with the famous phrase that most

people know if you're a Christian.

135

:

So what?

136

:

Whether you eat or drink or whatever

you do all to the glory of God.

137

:

So that's the general basic operating

principle that I'm working from.

138

:

That's my starting place, but I have a few

resources that I go to when I'm evaluating

139

:

whether or not I want to watch a TV show.

140

:

And if I'm being.

141

:

Especially prudent about it, and I don't

always do this, but I would recommend

142

:

if you're concerned about a show, these

are three places you should go in.

143

:

The first place might be Kids in mind.com.

144

:

This is where you can see a

movie usually broken down in

145

:

categories of a sex, an nudity, B,

violence, and gore and C language.

146

:

It'll give you a number between

one and 10 as to how much of each

147

:

of these things you're gonna find.

148

:

So kids in mind.com

149

:

is a great place usually for movies.

150

:

Second place is plugged in.com.

151

:

If you pop this one in.

152

:

This is also gonna show you a

breakdown of how the movie fares.

153

:

It doesn't use a rating system, but it

will tell you what's in the movie and

154

:

they'll give you their take on whether

the content is worth you diving into.

155

:

So they're gonna help you try

to make a decision for yourself.

156

:

They don't really give

you a recommendation.

157

:

They're just gonna help you evaluate it.

158

:

Plugged in.com

159

:

is a ministry of focus on the family.

160

:

So if you've any experience

with those guys, you kinda

161

:

know what you're getting into.

162

:

So they have a couple small ratings

in there, but mostly it's just content

163

:

about how they've evaluated it.

164

:

The third resource is

common sense media.org.

165

:

This one also has a rating system.

166

:

They'll give you a number at

how, what age they think your

167

:

kid would be able to watch it.

168

:

Where it's semi appropriate.

169

:

Of course it's subjective.

170

:

You have to make a decision yourself.

171

:

But they'll, they're gonna give

you reasons why they think what

172

:

they do, and so they're gonna refer

to specific parts of the movie.

173

:

Okay.

174

:

So those are three places that I

could look and perhaps would look

175

:

when I'm trying to evaluate whether

or not I want to enjoy something.

176

:

And of course, you're gonna

wanna look at the rating.

177

:

The rating is pg, pastor

pj, you said it was a movie.

178

:

I think you're right.

179

:

It looks like it's an

hour and a half long.

180

:

Okay.

181

:

All of that is preamble before I

come to the decision making criteria.

182

:

And I think your principle is

right, PPJ, is it something

183

:

I wanna expose my family to?

184

:

Ultimately, I have

responsibility for that.

185

:

So if I am gonna watch it, I'm gonna watch

it with my family, and then I wanna be

186

:

able to watch everything that's happening.

187

:

And if at some point I find

it objectionable, it's.

188

:

Crossing a line that I don't see fit,

I have no problem turning it off.

189

:

I remember we did this with

one of the TV shows on Netflix.

190

:

I forget what it was called,

but it was a family flick.

191

:

It was something about

family, something or other.

192

:

Anyway, we were watching it and

they introduced a character that

193

:

I said, oh, that's not happening.

194

:

We're turning this off.

195

:

My kids are disappointed, of course.

196

:

But I felt no sorrow

about that whatsoever.

197

:

In fact, I felt.

198

:

A little bit tinged on the inside.

199

:

'cause I'm thinking, I wish I wouldn't

have showed them that in the first place.

200

:

I would've liked to have avoided that.

201

:

So again, going back to these

websites here that are gonna

202

:

help you make the decision.

203

:

All that said, your job dad, if you

are dad, is to make the call for

204

:

your family to know what's coming

into your house, to guard it and to

205

:

safeguard your family's eyes and ears.

206

:

Now you've of course remember times

and you've seen things, I'm sure, or

207

:

heard things and you wish you never

would've seen them or heard them.

208

:

Would you say that's true for you PPJ?

209

:

Absolutely.

210

:

I could say the same.

211

:

There's things that I've seen and

heard that I wish I never had the

212

:

exposure to in the very first place.

213

:

What a terrible thing it would

be for your kids to say that.

214

:

And it's something that you allowed

into the gates of your home.

215

:

All that said your job

is to be responsible.

216

:

Your job is to make a good decision.

217

:

And if you could do it to the glory

of God, then I'd say, Hey, enjoy it.

218

:

If you can't.

219

:

Then don't violate your conscience.

220

:

And certainly if your conscience is

even on the edge for the sake of your

221

:

family, I would say just don't do it.

222

:

If you can do it freely without

condemnation in your soul, then hey,

223

:

maybe it's a great thing for you to do.

224

:

But again, go back to one

Corinthians chapter 10.

225

:

All things are lawful.

226

:

Not all things are beneficial.

227

:

Yeah, absolutely.

228

:

Common sense.

229

:

Media, by the way, has an app for your

phone, so you can even download that

230

:

and get that right there and check

on things there for Android still

231

:

I those people too, I don't know.

232

:

Okay.

233

:

Which it really doesn't matter, so it's

really the iPhones that we care about.

234

:

Yeah.

235

:

So good question that's our answer there.

236

:

So it's not a hard and fast,

like anathema or blessing.

237

:

It's use your discretion, discernment.

238

:

Not just neither one of us have seen it.

239

:

Correct.

240

:

Neither one of us have seen

the show, just so you know.

241

:

So if there's anything in it that's oh

obviously you should say no to this,

242

:

for this reason we haven't seen it yet.

243

:

Or ever, I guess to answer

that we may never see it.

244

:

Correct.

245

:

Yeah.

246

:

Yeah.

247

:

One other point of clarification and

then we'll get into our text for today.

248

:

This is not dealing with

K-Pop demon hunters.

249

:

This goes back to the concept of

our ladies and the ladies retreat.

250

:

You mentioned, I think during that

time I had said, Hey, men shouldn't

251

:

listen to the women preachers.

252

:

That's right.

253

:

And then you said, Hey, I

listened to Amanda's sermon and.

254

:

You were complimentary of that, which was

great, and she was encouraged by that.

255

:

We as pastors do know what the ladies

are preaching in our ministries.

256

:

Whether that's Amanda preaching

or one of the preachers I know.

257

:

One of the preachers, I live with her.

258

:

That's true.

259

:

You live with your preacher too.

260

:

Yeah, if I'm not mistaken.

261

:

In fact, we're gonna also have

Pastor Mark's wife preach in

262

:

women's Bible study coming up.

263

:

In a couple weeks here.

264

:

And he lives with her.

265

:

And he lives with her.

266

:

Yeah.

267

:

That's amazing.

268

:

And all three of us as pastors,

are heavily involved in the message

269

:

prep process with our wives.

270

:

And so we know what they're preparing,

what we know, what they're delivering.

271

:

And so this is not a hands-off approach.

272

:

We're not saying whatever they're

doing, just, let's hope it's good.

273

:

We care about that.

274

:

And that's part of our role as of

shepherding the flock to make sure that we

275

:

are guarding the flock on that front too.

276

:

So you can trust that as pastors,

we know what is being preached.

277

:

We know what is being taught there.

278

:

And as pastors, we do.

279

:

Listen, and we do survey and we do know

what's being preached there because of

280

:

that shepherding role in that capacity.

281

:

Amen to that.

282

:

And we don't let anyone occupy

the pulpit that we don't trust.

283

:

So there's always gonna be that tacit

understanding that if someone is in the

284

:

pulpit, opening a Bible with a group of

people that are our people, our church,

285

:

that they have our approval and our

encouragement because we trust them.

286

:

We don't need to look

at every jot and tittle.

287

:

In fact, at one church that we were at,

there was accusations that the pastors

288

:

didn't have enough oversight over the

pulpits because one of those pastors was

289

:

lifting information off of other people's

sermons and using it in their sermon.

290

:

Yep.

291

:

And people were saying, why

didn't you guys know that?

292

:

You should have known that.

293

:

And the reason why is

because we don't do that.

294

:

We trust each other.

295

:

There's that.

296

:

There's an underlying necessary

trust that comes with the pulpits.

297

:

If you're in it, there's already

a lot of barriers that you've

298

:

crossed because you possess the

trustworthiness to be in that position.

299

:

Now, if there's ever a reason why you

break that trust, then things change.

300

:

For sure.

301

:

Yeah.

302

:

But that said, there's always an

inherent trust with the pulpit.

303

:

If they're in the pulpit,

that means we trust them.

304

:

We don't need to examine every jot

and tittle to feel like they're gonna

305

:

bring it clearly and articulately.

306

:

Yeah.

307

:

Let's get into our DVR today.

308

:

We are in Nehemiah six and seven.

309

:

Nehemiah chapter six and chapter seven.

310

:

And sorry, parents, those of you with.

311

:

Junior hires and high

schoolers in the car.

312

:

We just set them all off

saying six, seven, because

313

:

that is something that they do.

314

:

So Nehemiah, how do they do it though?

315

:

They just do it.

316

:

How do they do it?

317

:

I, you're gonna have to

find one and ask them.

318

:

I'm sure they will be more than

happy to do tj, the san, the

319

:

hand motions and everything.

320

:

Pj, come on.

321

:

I can't bring myself.

322

:

Do it.

323

:

You could do it.

324

:

I can't.

325

:

Six, seven.

326

:

Come on.

327

:

Come on.

328

:

You could do it.

329

:

You could do it.

330

:

Oh man.

331

:

Anyways, Nehemiah chapter six.

332

:

We've got Tobi and Sin Ball who are

back on the scene, and they're gonna

333

:

come after Nehemiah and they're

gonna come after Nehemiah and

334

:

they're gonna try to stop him still.

335

:

And Nehemiah, I love Nehemiah's response.

336

:

He said I'm too busy doing God's work

to come down and bother with you guys.

337

:

Just go away.

338

:

I don't have time for this.

339

:

And so when they're not able to get him.

340

:

In before them.

341

:

Then they slander him.

342

:

They say we heard that, you were

trying to rally the Jewish people and

343

:

that this is all an effort to regain

power in the area and everything else.

344

:

And Nehemiah, I love his response again

in verse eight, he says, no such things,

345

:

as you say, have been done for your,

inventing them out of your own mind.

346

:

He says, for they wanted to frighten

us, thinking their hands will drop

347

:

from the work and it will not be done.

348

:

But now, oh God, strengthen my hands.

349

:

I love that you're inventing

them out of your mind.

350

:

And then the response, which

is such a good response, again,

351

:

modeling good leadership here.

352

:

He says, God, strengthen our hands.

353

:

He turns to the Lord in the

face of opposition, and that's

354

:

where his trust is going to be.

355

:

And so from there, he went on and there's

another person that shows up that poses in

356

:

a different way by trying to lure him into

disobedience to God by saying to Nehemiah,

357

:

why don't you come and stay in the temple?

358

:

Why don't you take shelter in the temple?

359

:

And Nehemiah knew that was not his,

that was only a role for the priests.

360

:

And so he says, I'm not gonna do this.

361

:

I'm not gonna disobey the Lord.

362

:

And God is going to honor this because

the rest of chapter six shows us that

363

:

the wall ends up being completed and

it be, it's completed in 52 days.

364

:

And so that's amazing.

365

:

When you think of the fact that

this wall had been broken down.

366

:

If you look in the maps of the back of

your Bible, you may even have a map back

367

:

there that shows you Nehemiah's wall.

368

:

It's a pretty amazing feat in today's

standards to get a wall built in 52 days.

369

:

That's to this degree,

this strength, this height.

370

:

But in Nehemiah's Day, this is

a symbol of the fact that the

371

:

people really bought into this.

372

:

And there was the desperation too

of a city without walls, right?

373

:

The Proverbs talks about, that

talks about a man without self

374

:

controls, like a city without walls.

375

:

In other words, he's vulnerable.

376

:

And so the people had the

desire to get these walls up.

377

:

But it's still amazing that

they got it done in 52 days.

378

:

Amen to that.

379

:

And that goes to show

that God is behind it.

380

:

I can't help but see the connection

between the walls being built quickly

381

:

and Nehemiah being a man who's peripheral

throughout the whole situation here, it

382

:

seems like he just can't stop praying.

383

:

And I think that's why God blesses

the work as you just said here, this

384

:

is incredibly important for us to

see that God is supporting what he

385

:

wants to see done with his people.

386

:

When you comply with what God wants

to do in your life and you're praying

387

:

for what God's will is in your

life, man he's inclined to obey.

388

:

He's inclined to not obey

like you're commanding him.

389

:

He's inclined to indulge you

and say, yes, I wanna do that.

390

:

You're praying for more godliness.

391

:

Fantastic.

392

:

I can support that.

393

:

So pray for what God's

will is and watch God work.

394

:

This is amazing by the way.

395

:

I had a question.

396

:

You brought it up as you were talking

about the wall being built in 52 days.

397

:

Who built the pyramids?

398

:

Everybody wants to know the

Israelites built the payments.

399

:

Is that right?

400

:

Do you believe that?

401

:

Really though?

402

:

I think they built some of them.

403

:

I think that was part of the their

job to build the tombs of Kings.

404

:

How did they do that?

405

:

I don't know.

406

:

How did they build that?

407

:

Those things are amazing.

408

:

They're amazing.

409

:

How did they do it?

410

:

They used levers and pulley

and logs to They excel, huh?

411

:

Move the pieces.

412

:

Yes.

413

:

We don't know.

414

:

We, I guess we're guessing We

don't know how they did it.

415

:

No, we don't because it's precise.

416

:

It's amazing.

417

:

I'm amazed.

418

:

Yeah.

419

:

They use their laser levels and they

used probably their, all the technology

420

:

that they had that we lost for eons.

421

:

And so we guess we

discovered it just recently.

422

:

Really.

423

:

They had to have something.

424

:

We are flabbergasted.

425

:

We have no idea how

they did what they did.

426

:

Yeah.

427

:

Which is what makes it all the more

remarkable because we, even with

428

:

our current technology, we would

struggle to do something like that.

429

:

For sure.

430

:

Yeah chapter seven what we find here

is Nehemiah's leadership is not done.

431

:

Now that the walls are built, he's

gonna continue to make sure that he's

432

:

providing for the people, and he's gonna

do that through appointing gatekeepers.

433

:

We have gatekeepers in our church who help

keep us safe on Sunday mornings and make

434

:

sure, and other days too when we've got

ministry going on, make sure that nothing.

435

:

Onward is happening with

any threats from outside.

436

:

And that's what Nehemiah does here.

437

:

And these people are not just

gonna just trust in the wall.

438

:

They're gonna do more than that.

439

:

They're gonna use the

wall as it should be used.

440

:

And so they're gonna open the gates,

but then they're gonna make sure that

441

:

they shut the gates before the darkness

comes because they don't want to run

442

:

into a situation where somebody with.

443

:

With nefarious intentions, we'd be

able to come in and attack them or

444

:

hurt them or anything like that.

445

:

So that's what they're doing here

in the first part of chapter seven.

446

:

And then after this, Nehemiah is going

to, because God, it says in chapter

447

:

seven, verse five place it upon his heart.

448

:

Nehemiah is going to call for a census

and the people are counted and God

449

:

is going to use this, not like David

called for a census and wanted to trust

450

:

in the men and trust in the numbers.

451

:

But.

452

:

This is this is God showing Nehemiah his

faithfulness to bring the people back

453

:

into the city and to repopulate the city.

454

:

And so Nehemiah is gonna do this, and

it's also a way, I think, of showing

455

:

honor to those that labored so faithfully

and endured the opposition for the Lord.

456

:

Let's wrap up this episode

then, and then we'll be done

457

:

with this, with Nehemiah six.

458

:

And 7, 6, 7.

459

:

Alright, let's pray.

460

:

God, thanks for the resources

that we even talked about at

461

:

the beginning of this episode.

462

:

Things like common sense media and

these others that allow us to to,

463

:

to consult these things and to be.

464

:

Mindful as parents of what it is

that we're allowing into our home.

465

:

And so I pray that we would be good

stewards of our children, that we'd

466

:

be careful to guard their minds,

to guard their eyes Lord against

467

:

things that they shouldn't see.

468

:

We don't want to, as Pastor

Rod was saying, be those that

469

:

are the source of things that

they'll never be able to forget.

470

:

And so give us as parents the wisdom to

know when to turn something off or when

471

:

to not even turn it on in the first place.

472

:

And help us to teach our children

that sometimes following the Lord.

473

:

It means saying no to things that

other people get to say yes to.

474

:

But it's worth it in the end.

475

:

Lord, we want to have God honoring homes.

476

:

Help us Lord, in the midst of

a culture that is attacking

477

:

that to remain faithful to you.

478

:

Even as we see with Nehemiah

in the midst of opposition.

479

:

Lord, we want to continue to do what

you desire, what your will is, and

480

:

not just fall prey to the easy way

out or to what the world wants for us.

481

:

And guard our families.

482

:

We pray, Lord, in Jesus name, amen.

483

:

Amen.
