What happens when the idea has everyone excited, but then you have to make some sacrifice or commitment beyond just the excitement? American politics... "why don't they go out and do it right?" well, they (the powers aligned against us) don't take off. They do more for a lie than we do for the truth. And little by little resistance is worn down and those who hang on and fight are labeled extremists and cast aside. Both in the academic world and the activist world. Sad but true.
