Episode Summary

In this episode, I reflect on what the teacher of the future will truly need to become. Artificial intelligence, technology, classrooms, and students will continue changing, but I do not believe the future needs teachers who become more like machines. It needs teachers who become even more human.

I explore why compassion and high expectations must remain connected. Students need empathy, understanding, and adults who recognize the challenges they carry. They also need teachers who believe they are capable of incredible things and who continue challenging them to grow. The strongest educators understand a student’s story while still believing deeply in that student’s future.

This episode also focuses on relationships, curiosity, joy, identity, and adaptability. Great teachers continue learning throughout their careers, protect the values that brought them into education, and remain willing to change without losing themselves. Technology can provide information, but it cannot replace authentic trust, encouragement, belonging, and human connection.

Ultimately, becoming the teacher the future needs is not about becoming perfect or knowing everything. It is about continuing to learn, grow, listen, believe in young people, and bring hope into the classroom. Technology will keep evolving, but the heart of teaching will remain rooted in people.

Funky Teacher, Nicholas Kleve:

This is Mr. Funky Teacher with BeAFunkyTeacher.com. I'm coming to you with another Be a Funky Teacher podcast.

Welcome back, everyone.

Today's episode is called Becoming the Teacher the Future Needs.

Artificial intelligence is changing education.

Technology is changing education.

Our students are changing.

Our classrooms are changing.

But as I think about the future of teaching, I don't think the future needs a completely different kind of teacher.

I think it needs teachers who become even more human.

Teachers who continue learning.

Teachers who continue growing.

Teachers who build relationships.

Teachers who bring hope.

Teachers who never lose sight of why they entered this profession in the first place.

Today, I want to talk about what I believe the teacher of the future really looks like.

But before we get into it, I want to ground myself in gratitude. Here are three things that I'm thankful for.

The first thing that I'm thankful for is encouraging words.

Sometimes one kind conversation, one thoughtful email, or one encouraging comment can completely change someone's day.

I'm thankful for people who choose to encourage others.

Those encouraging words matter.

The second thing that I'm thankful for is students who ask great questions.

Some of the best learning moments don't happen because I planned them.

They happen because a student asked an incredible question that takes our learning somewhere I never expected.

I'm thankful for curious students.

And the third thing that I'm thankful for is second chances.

Teaching is full of second chances.

Students need them.

Teachers need them.

I'm thankful that every day gives us another opportunity to grow, improve, and begin again.

Well, let's get back into the main topic.

When people talk about the future of education, they often focus on technology.

Artificial intelligence.

Devices.

Programs.

Platforms.

Those things matter.

But I don't think they are the most important part of the future.

The future of education will still be built on people.

On relationships.

On trust.

On compassion.

And on believing in young people.

If this entire AI series has had one central message, it's that technology may change, but humanity still matters.

So what kind of teacher does the future actually need?

Let's get into the main topic here.

The main topic once again is Becoming the Teacher the Future Needs.

The future needs deeply human teachers.

People often ask what the future teacher will look like.

I don't think it's about becoming more like technology.

I think it's about becoming more human.

Students still need people who care.

Who notice them.

Who believe in them.

Who celebrate them.

That will never go out of style.

Compassion and high expectations belong together.

I think the teacher of the future will need to bring both compassion and high expectations because they belong together.

One thing I've learned, especially while working with students who have experienced trauma, is that compassion doesn't mean lowering expectations.

Students need empathy.

They need understanding.

But they also need someone who believes they are capable of incredible things.

The best teachers do both.

They understand a student's story while still believing in that student's future.

Relationships will always matter.

Technology can answer questions.

But it can't build trust.

Not true, authentic trust.

It can't authentically celebrate a student's success.

It can't notice when someone is having a difficult day.

Relationships remain truly at the heart of great teaching.

Curiosity keeps teachers growing.

The best teachers I know never stop learning.

They ask questions.

They read books.

They attend conferences.

They listen to podcasts.

They reflect on their practice.

Growth doesn't stop after year one.

It doesn't stop after year 20.

Joy still belongs in the classroom.

I hope we never lose the fun.

The laughter.

The excitement.

Learning should still feel alive.

Students remember how classrooms made them feel.

And joy matters.

Teacher identity matters too.

Don't let technology define your worth.

Don't let test scores define your worth.

Don't let outside voices define your worth.

Remember who you are.

Remember why you became a teacher.

Protect that identity.

Keep adapting without losing yourself.

Education has always changed.

The teachers who thrive are willing to adapt.

So the teacher of the future will still need to adapt.

That's not going away.

But adapting doesn't mean abandoning your values.

Hold tightly to what matters most.

Students still need hope.

They do.

The teacher of the future still needs to bring hope to students.

There are plenty of voices telling young people what's wrong with the world.

Students also need adults who remind them what's possible.

Hope is one of the greatest gifts we can give.

And becoming never ends.

I don't think any of us ever arrive.

We're all becoming.

Becoming better listeners.

Better educators.

Better leaders.

Better people.

Teaching truly is a journey.

The future doesn't need teachers who become more like machines.

It needs teachers who become even more human.

It doesn't need teachers who compete with technology.

We have to be careful that we're not thinking we're simply in competition with robots.

No.

We're not.

The future doesn't need teachers who compete with technology.

It needs teachers who do what technology never can.

Build relationships.

Inspire hope.

Challenge students to think deeply.

Help young people become the very best versions of themselves.

And I believe that's exactly what great teachers have always done.

As I do a reflective close and think about today's episode, I don't think the future needs perfect teachers.

I don't think it needs teachers who know everything.

I think it needs teachers who continue becoming.

Who continue learning.

Who continue loving kids.

Who continue believing that every child has incredible potential.

Technology will continue changing.

Our classrooms will continue changing.

But the heart of teaching has always been and always will be people.

Keep becoming the teacher your students need.

Because that teacher still changes the world.
