Ghia – Have you ever wondered which comes first Faith or Hope? This week Ghia talks about the archaic definition of Hope, which is Trust! What a difference this concept has made in her life!

Speaker:

Hooray, GIA here.

2

:

Welcome to the Creative Spiritual

Journey podcast, where Judy and I talk

3

:

about those things that bring us joy.

4

:

For me, I find joy by connecting

with nature, connecting with Jesus

5

:

Christ and our heavenly parents.

6

:

Seasonal living, and all the bits of magic

and wonder I come across while navigating

7

:

this remarkable journey we call life.

8

:

Wow.

9

:

Does it feel like spring

has arrived where you are?

10

:

Things are starting to move faster.

11

:

After the slow, dark winter,

there is more energy in the air.

12

:

Can you feel it?

13

:

Okay.

14

:

Not in South Africa where they're moving

into fall, but here in southeastern Utah,

15

:

it's warm one day and then cold the next.

16

:

But the flowers are blooming.

17

:

The lizards are starting to run around,

and I am getting ready for Easter.

18

:

This year, Easter is almost

three weeks later than last year,

19

:

which makes the seasonal change

seem that much more dramatic.

20

:

It's kind of crazy how

much Easter moves around.

21

:

Did you know that Easter is always

the Sunday after the Pascal full Moon?

22

:

Do you know that word, Pascal?

23

:

I had to look it up.

24

:

It comes from the Hebrew word,

meaning Passover, and it is

25

:

related to Easter because of

Christ becoming the Pascal lamb.

26

:

The Pascal moon is the first

full moon that follows the spring

27

:

equinox in the Northern hemisphere.

28

:

You won't be surprised to learn that.

29

:

I love that.

30

:

The date of Easter is determined by

both the solar and the lunar cycle.

31

:

It has so much significance to me that

these two celestial bodies together

32

:

determine this all important holy day.

33

:

But believe it or not, I am not going

to talk about the moon or the sun today.

34

:

Well, maybe I will reference them a

little, but they're not the main topic.

35

:

My topic today came from a single line

in a conference talk by Elder Anderson.

36

:

He said, quote.

37

:

Hope is a living gift, a gift that grows

as we increase our faith in Jesus Christ.

38

:

What hope is living, it grows.

39

:

You've got to know that.

40

:

I would love that to anthropomorphize.

41

:

An inanimate object is fun, but

to anthropomorphize a word or

42

:

feeling that's over the top.

43

:

But it's okay because I'm not

the only one that does it.

44

:

You know the scripture, John?

45

:

One, one.

46

:

In the beginning was the word, and the

word was with God, and the word was God.

47

:

If God can be a word, then hope can

be alive, and I'm going with it.

48

:

so this Easter seemed like the

perfect time to talk about hope.

49

:

It's spring, the light is increasing

and things are starting to grow.

50

:

the act of a tiny seed.

51

:

Growing into a plant represents the

potential for something small to become

52

:

something significant, and our hope, if

watered and nourished, can grow as well.

53

:

Easter whispers of New beginnings,

A time when hope can bloom, like

54

:

spring flowers, and there is more

to this hope and spring correlation.

55

:

Nephi used the words a

perfect brightness of hope.

56

:

Hope just naturally

seems to radiate light.

57

:

Elder Anderson went on to say like

a light whose brilliance grows.

58

:

Hope brightens the darkened world

and we see our glorious future.

59

:

he also said, and let me paraphrase

this, like an eclipse of the sun, SUN,

60

:

if we block the light of the sun, SON,

it will result in an eclipse of hope.

61

:

Ah, see more references

to the sun and the moon.

62

:

Yes, I love it.

63

:

You can eclipse hope if you

aren't paying attention.

64

:

So today on this beautiful spring

day coming up on Easter, I want

65

:

to share some thoughts about hope.

66

:

I have to say that hope has always been

baffling to me because I thought you

67

:

should have hope and then faith, you hope

for something to be true, and then you

68

:

develop the faith to believe it's true.

69

:

That is the way it

always made sense to me.

70

:

Does anyone else think this way?

71

:

I mean, when you look up the definition

for the word hope, the first one that

72

:

comes up is a feeling of expectation,

a desire for a certain thing to happen.

73

:

I hope to feel better soon,

or I hope to get the job.

74

:

To say I have hope in Jesus Christ

sounds so much weaker to me than

75

:

I have faith in Jesus Christ.

76

:

But when you read the scriptures, they

always say, faith, hope, and charity.

77

:

Faith comes before hope, implying

we need faith and then we get hope.

78

:

but you know what?

79

:

If you're like me, you think, well,

maybe whoever wrote these words just

80

:

wasn't too worried about the order.

81

:

But unfortunately that isn't

the case because there are other

82

:

more clarifying scriptures.

83

:

Moroni 7 42 says, if a man have

faith, he must needs have hope for.

84

:

Without faith, there can't be any hope.

85

:

Faith comes first.

86

:

What is the deal?

87

:

Ah.

88

:

Then one day I found an unexpected answer.

89

:

As I read further down in the dictionary,

I found a different definition for hope.

90

:

The archaic definition

for hope is trust, trust.

91

:

Oh, that makes so much more sense to me.

92

:

First, I have faith in the

Lord and then I can trust him.

93

:

Now, every time I see the word hope, I

substitute trust and see how it sounds.

94

:

It doesn't make sense everywhere,

but it does in a lot of places.

95

:

Here are a few examples where I

have traded the word trust for hope.

96

:

These are all verses from the Psalms.

97

:

Hope thou in God becomes

trust thou in God.

98

:

I hope in thy word becomes

I trust in thy word.

99

:

Let Israel hope in the Lord becomes

let Israel trust in the Lord.

100

:

I love Sister Tracy Browning, who

is currently the second counselor

101

:

in the primary general presidency.

102

:

In her amazing talk seeking

answers to spiritual questions,

103

:

she quotes Elder Scott.

104

:

He said to exercise, faith is to trust

that the Lord knows what he is doing with

105

:

you and that he can accomplish it for

your eternal good, even though you cannot

106

:

understand how he can possibly do it.

107

:

End quote.

108

:

It has been a journey for me, but I

think I am beginning to trust the Lord.

109

:

I am learning that he is always working

in my life and that he has a plan,

110

:

and that if I don't get what I want,

I can assume that it is part of his

111

:

plan and I will get something better.

112

:

Have you heard this idea of

getting something better?

113

:

I learned it from Sister Wendy Nelson.

114

:

Let me give you a brief rundown of

a story she told in one of her books

115

:

Before she and President Nelson had

announced their engagement publicly,

116

:

Wendy went out with a friend to

look for a new home for the couple.

117

:

When Wendy thought she had found

the perfect place, she asked her

118

:

friend to pray with her requesting

that she be able to get the house.

119

:

Her friend prayed saying, help

Wendy get this house, but if not

120

:

this house, then something better.

121

:

Wendy went home pondering those words,

if not this house, then something better.

122

:

She later called her friend and said.

123

:

I didn't know you could do that.

124

:

Ask for something better.

125

:

This moment highlights the profound

truth that even when we think we know

126

:

what we want, there may be something

better that we haven't yet imagined.

127

:

Okay?

128

:

so now I have to tell you my

story of getting something better.

129

:

I decided I wanted to live in a small,

remote ski town on the east side of the

130

:

Sierra Nevada mountains called Mammoth.

131

:

Amazingly, I found a good job.

132

:

But to my disappointment, I

couldn't find a place to live.

133

:

This was before the internet, so I

had to wait a whole week for a new

134

:

issue of the newspaper to come out.

135

:

Every time I wanted to check the listings,

it was a slow, frustrating process.

136

:

In the meantime, my daughter and

I were living out of my truck.

137

:

I honestly didn't think it was too bad.

138

:

I mean, I was anxious to find a place

to live, but I thought we were okay.

139

:

So I was really surprised a couple

weeks ago when my daughter, who

140

:

was all grown up now reminded me

how she had to take a bath in the

141

:

stream before going to high school.

142

:

I conveniently forgot that part

of the story, and apparently I

143

:

permanently traumatized my daughter.

144

:

Well, we did eventually

find a place to live.

145

:

It just wasn't what I wanted.

146

:

Okay.

147

:

Mammoth had some really cute

little cabins nestled in the

148

:

woods, and I really, really wanted.

149

:

One week after week, I would

search the paper to no avail.

150

:

Finally, someone in the tiny mammoth

branch that we were going to told me about

151

:

a trailer that was becoming available.

152

:

I did not.

153

:

Did not want to live in a trailer,

but in the end I had to take it.

154

:

What could I do?

155

:

Winter was coming.

156

:

The reality is that that trailer turned

out to be a blessing for one thing.

157

:

Unlike other places I had

looked at, it had two bathrooms.

158

:

This allowed me to sublet a bedroom and

a bathroom and still have a bathroom

159

:

and a bedroom for my daughter and me.

160

:

And for the other thing, it was right in

the middle of town, not out in the boonies

161

:

where most of the little cabins were.

162

:

This became particularly useful when

I got a second job as a taxi driver.

163

:

I.

164

:

In fact, in the end, I was so grateful

for my trailer that on several

165

:

occasions I recall bearing my testimony

about how God knew what I needed a

166

:

place in town with two bathrooms.

167

:

Then I often jokingly added, but

I'm sure if God had wanted to,

168

:

he could have gotten me a little

cabin in town with two bathrooms.

169

:

It wasn't until it was time for me to

move from Mammoth that I received my

170

:

final miracle in relation to this trailer.

171

:

I was so sad to leave Mammoth.

172

:

I loved the little branch.

173

:

I loved my job.

174

:

I loved living in the

mountains next to whiskey area.

175

:

I mean, it was my dream come true.

176

:

Can you see what's coming?

177

:

The best thing about leaving

Mammoth was leaving that trailer.

178

:

If I had had to leave a cute little

cabin, how much harder would it have been?

179

:

It wasn't until I was moving that I

was finally grateful for that trailer.

180

:

I didn't get a little cabin, but

in the end I got something better.

181

:

I can't say I have 100% learned this

lesson of hope and trust, because

182

:

sometimes in the moment it is so hard

to trust that there could be something

183

:

better than exactly what I want.

184

:

But I do think that slowly I am learning.

185

:

I.
