Maundy Thursday Reflections with Charlotte De Paula

Jesus showed His love for His disciples by humbly taking on the role of the lowest servant in the house and washing their feet. This gesture was a sign of His love and servanthood, as He knew that the Father had put all things under His power. He took off His kingly robe and poured water into a basin before drying their feet with a towel that was wrapped around His waist. This was a powerful reminder to the disciples to love one another, just as Jesus had loved them.

The conversation focused on the significance of Maundy Thursday in the Christian faith. Sunday is a celebration of Jesus' power, given to Him by God, and His return to God. Thursday is to remember Jesus' commandment to love others as He has loved us. This time of year is especially holy and sacred as Jesus chose to lay down His life for us. During a Passover seder, Jesus drank the cup and broke the bread, which symbolized His body and blood being spilled for all. The washing of feet was the beginning of Him laying His life down for us, despite His anguish and distress in Gethsemane. Jesus, the God of all the universe, chose to shed His brilliant light and become incarnate. He chose to walk this life like us and sacrifice for us, and when we accept His gift of salvation, we are His.
