Speaker:It's sort of like it's strange when you meet people that I bet you're
Speaker:The same age will listen to the same stuff growing up. He's a bit older than me
Speaker:Quite a few years old but who cares it is like this and he's
Speaker:one of those guys that were
Speaker:Sort of like he he's a customer, but it's sort of like
Speaker:It's beginning to merge into a friendship if you know what I mean. Mm-hmm. We meet up at shows and
Speaker:What not and and we see each other
Speaker:Every now and then it's not that we we spend time together
Speaker:But it's sort of like accidentally also you're going to that show - okay
Speaker:I'm me too. Maybe we didn't meet up and it became
Speaker:becomes a thing where you think, "Hmm, this is strange."
Speaker:But how cool is it?
Speaker:So I have to do a shout out to Jonas,
Speaker:amazing guy.
Speaker:The one I told you about that met up with the Ramones
Speaker:and Clash and walked out back in the day had a fan scene
Speaker:and being too, the showing Copenhagen were made and opened up for Kiss in 1980,
Speaker:took pictures, is up real close, you can see Paul De Anno's groin if you will, and he took pictures of Kiss.

Speaker:No, but it's up there front and center, which is cool with his cameras,
Speaker:And he took pictures of of Kiss too.
Speaker:And then he was kind enough to scan them for me.
Speaker:And I mean, fucking hell, a small arena in Copenhagen, Denmark.

Speaker:With like this big show back in 1980.

Speaker:It deserves to sit down and go through it.
Speaker:And as, as you said, it's one of the best records of all time.
Speaker:Yeah, for me, it's up there at least if it's not the top five
Speaker:maybe it's the top 10 but I mention it every once in a while but I mean I change my top top
Speaker:lists every now and then if you ask me do a top five on the top every head I will do a top five but
Speaker:I mean you ask me like 10 minutes later it's gonna be different but it's
Speaker:it depends on the mood but this is definitely up there
Speaker:Since I mean, if we're like diving into it right now, it's, I mean, Alice Cooper for me, it's like watching a horror movie, and I love horror movies.

Speaker:And it's a this album is sort of like a soundtrack to a horror movie. It could easily be written into a script.
Speaker:And well, it is a movie, actually.

Speaker:the soundtrack is the result of that.

Speaker:I mean, it's talking about starting out with like,
Speaker:I mean, Alice, I think that people,
Speaker:Some people don't get the greatness of this guy.
Speaker:I mean, he leaves his band at L's Coupo Group.
Speaker:And so this is his first solo thing he did on his own.
Speaker:And he's sort of like, he talks about this often.
Speaker:And I always got what he meant by saying it's supposed to be
Speaker:like theatrical is supposed to be, it's almost vaudeville, if you know what I mean, Groucho
Speaker:Morks and whatnot. And those were the guys that came to the shows in the early 70s, I mean,
Speaker:because they got it. And you have to look at Alice Cooper with, it's sort of like from a distance,
Speaker:if you know what I mean, you can't dive into and say, oh my God, this is sort of like Metallica or
Speaker:or whatever. Now this is a whole package. And listening to this opening track, it's...
Speaker:When you hear the bass just playstaring and Alice sings, it's... I get a doors vibe about
Speaker:it. It's sort of like when you listen to the early door stuff. And I'm thinking that this
Speaker:could easily be a homage to his friend Jim Morrison, the way he presents it. And then when it like
Speaker:halfway in breaks out into a rock and roll song with with all of that, I mean, ah, fuck, it's great.
Speaker:I just love it. Love it. Love it. Love it. Love it.
Speaker:- It starts out with this kind of bluesy intro.
Speaker:- Yeah.
Speaker:And Alice sings all whispering and quiet and I usually fucking hate that kind of music like that singing the type of singing
Speaker:I hate it's like either fucking sing or don't sing
Speaker:Pick pick one. Okay one. Yeah, but Alice makes it work with this. It's part of the
Speaker:See what what I love about to piggyback on what you're saying about Alice Cooper overall
Speaker:He's always created an experience. He's always created this this
Speaker:Show it's not just a concert. It's a show. It's a thing you go to it's a thing
Speaker:Yeah, see an experience and this song and the way he sings it is
Speaker:exactly
Speaker:That and that's why it works as part of that whole
Speaker:Experience yeah, it is and then and then the song jumps into that funky groove
Speaker:and then his vocals completely change again. It's just, you know, something different. You know, the
Speaker:horns, I'm not a big horn fan, even though back in the early days I did play the cornet, but I'm not a
Speaker:big horn guy usually. But the horns on this record, again, it adds something to the music, and it
Speaker:really, I think it really works. And I don't think these songs would be as great without the horns.
Speaker:I think it's just that there's something about it. And I do like it's a package deal.
Speaker:Yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah. And I do love the way the vocals get louder and louder with each first.
Speaker:Yeah. And how he's screaming and screaming. And yeah, and this is all in and it's kind of
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:[INAUDIBLE]
Speaker:Oh, fucking hell, it's OK.
Speaker:Yeah, it was awesome.
Speaker:So yeah, it's a great opening to this soundtrack record,
Speaker:whatever.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:And it's fun because since we're moving along here,
Speaker:It's the next song.
Speaker:All of it, it's like watching Alice live
Speaker:because he doesn't talk between songs.
Speaker:He doesn't have a, it doesn't speak to the audience.
Speaker:It's like going to theater.
Speaker:You get to see the play from start to finish.
Speaker:And that's an Alice Cooper show.
Speaker:There is always something going on.
Speaker:You never get bored between the songs,
Speaker:Some bands, they tend to tune their instruments or that people don't know, "Oh, what's up?
Speaker:What do we do now?" Nobody's talking, nobody's moving, what the hell? But if you watch the
Speaker:stage, there is always something going on. Somebody's running around, there's dolls,
Speaker:and there is swords, and Alice is an entertainer. And that's why going into the next song,
Speaker:devils food is a great theatrical piece I think with the ending monologue of the
Speaker:Vincent Price. Oh my god. I got nothing. You take over.
Speaker:Yeah, it's, it's, I, this is I think my favorite song on the record. I just, it's
Speaker:chaotic.
Speaker:It is.
Speaker:But it's Alice is telling the story. And he's like talk singing in places. And
Speaker:it's just again, it's theatrical. It's not just the song. This guy takes being a frontman
Speaker:to a whole new fucking level. Yeah. I mean, it's it's he's not even a frontman. No, it's
Speaker:a completely different thing. Yeah. And then the slowdown about a minute and a half and
Speaker:then Vincent Price comes in. Oh, my God, it does his little thing. Yeah, about the Black
Speaker:widow. I mean, highly potent fan of a spider. Yeah, love that. I
Speaker:mean, it's just, it's so hot. How you just had that music so
Speaker:low in the background. And yes, in price his voice. If you're
Speaker:old, like us, you grew up with Vincent Price in the horror
Speaker:movies. I remember when he was on the show, the Brady Bunch. It
Speaker:was like, holy shit, this guy is just a master the movies that
Speaker:he was in and all that stuff, he was just, I don't know, again,
Speaker:talk about an entertainer. He just he took these roles to a
Speaker:whole new level and it always is just something in between his
Speaker:voice and Alice voice together on the song. It's like, holy
Speaker:shit, it's like, yeah, okay, it doesn't get any better than that.
Speaker:No. And then I both like and don't like the way the song just
Speaker:cuts off. Yeah. And then the song black hole starts. It's like
Speaker:That's it's unnerving so I think it because it's almost like death in a way. Yeah, but it's kind of like
Speaker:He talks about and leading to death
Speaker:And then oh my god, it's just it's awesome
Speaker:It is it's great. Yeah, I mean vincent prize for crying out loud vincent prize and else cooper. I mean
Speaker:How good can it get? I mean, it's it's fucking awesome
Speaker:And oh, and going into Black Widow. Oh my god, you have to start this one. I don't know.
Speaker:The chorus is a bit creepy. Yeah, I love it. It's kind of like a children's song almost, you know, like London Bridges or whatever. It's sort of like that, but not.
Speaker:And it's just it's just one of those great early Alice Cooper songs. Yeah, got a great bass groove in it. It's just
Speaker:The I don't know what a luminary stew is no luminary. I've no idea what the fuck that means no, but it's a great
Speaker:Saying though it's just I don't know man. The tempo changes at 240 is just I
Speaker:I don't know man. It's just it's another great classic song. Yeah, it's just it's it's not I actually a while back I've read that the song is actually about
Speaker:serial killer or
Speaker:Something like that, but but I just don't know I
Speaker:Yeah, I tend to think that I in my in my mind it's still a spider
Speaker:Which is I think it's it's way better, but I
Speaker:It's the same thing here. I get the feeling of
Speaker:vaudeville musical cabaret and
Speaker:And and what not? I mean, it's it's big. It's bombastic
Speaker:And still it's contained if you know what I mean
Speaker:and and
Speaker:I mean, I believe it's
Speaker:Children or or maybe it's high-pitched
Speaker:Guy is going
Speaker:It's I mean it's fucking great
Speaker:yeah, yeah. Yeah. Yeah. It's a it's a good tune. Yeah, it is it is. And then we dive into something
Speaker:completely different. Yep. With some folks. Mm hmm. Throwing in this jazzy cabaret, you mentioned
Speaker:Cabaret a second ago, Cabaret style song right in the middle of this rock album. Yeah. You know, I mean it's
Speaker:Stuff like this is not my flavor. No, but I don't know for some reason I kind of like this
Speaker:I kind of like it. It reminds me a little bit of Queen in places. Yeah, like something the Queen would do
Speaker:But you know halfway it changes tempo it gets fast
Speaker:And then it kind of now it's a little more of like a rock song
Speaker:But then it goes back to the earlier groove and I don't know man. It's just yeah, it's it's an unusual
Speaker:Song yeah
Speaker:But it's what I like about the music from the 70s is that you can have this kind of shit
Speaker:Yeah, you try doing something like this today and people are gonna go. What are you doing? Yeah, you can't do that
Speaker:You can't do that. No, you know, what do you do in Metallica with the black album? You can't do that
Speaker:right
Speaker:But this is also like typical Alice Cooper doing doing I mean a song like some folks
Speaker:I mean, it's just it's just the way he is

Speaker:Just you sit there scratch your head. I'm thinking what the hell is going on but then you get it
Speaker:It's because it's it fits everything fits together. It's it's
Speaker:The one before and the one after it. Yeah, it's it's like I this little puzzle that all comes together. Yeah

Speaker:I love "Only Women Bleed". I think it's a great song. It's perfect in his life set. I just dig it.

Speaker:obviously shocking and different and he did create his own path. Like we were saying earlier, you know, what what rock and roll guy is going to put something like, you know, some of these songs on a
Speaker:record. He did what he wanted to do. And in that sense, he's very punk. But this song, I don't know,
Speaker:it's got like a little bit of a punk vibe. And I also see where the White Stripes got their inspiration
Speaker:for Seven Nation Army too. Or whatever that fucking song is called. Yeah. Yeah, I just love this song.
Speaker:I mean, from the open and rift to the strumming before Alice starts to sing and how it builds up.
Speaker:and it's really powerful and you got that whole youth brigade, I mean, believing in their power.
Speaker:"Where the department of youth, whoa!"
Speaker:And you get to, I mean, I can't help myself, I go, "Yeah!"
Speaker:Every time I hear the song live, it's like, "Yeah, they wear that department of youth, man!"
Speaker:"Fuck y'all, yeah!"
Speaker:Fucking great. It's, I don't know. It's an awesome song, I dig it.

Speaker:He's talking about himself in the third person if you know what I mean, and it's all like no

Speaker:We just watched like four or something the other night.
Speaker:It wasn't good, but two and three were actually not bad.

Speaker:not as good as the first though but no no but I get you and and it's the same feeling I get when
Speaker:I've listened to to this album it's it's a great horror movie it's a great story it's it's all of
Speaker:the good stuff that that I grew up with what watching Jason and and Mike Myers and Freddy
Speaker:Krueger and and Joss and whatnot it's I just love it takes me back yes and again it's an
Speaker:experience. And that's why this album holds up. What is it?
Speaker:Almost 50 years later?
Speaker:Yeah, like, well, it is, we're a couple years shy of 50 years on
Speaker:this thing, right? 1975, I think this came out. Yep. Yes. So I
Speaker:mean, it holds up. And for it, yeah, that's why you know, you
Speaker:got something talent right there. Yeah, when it holds up like
Speaker:that.
Speaker:So moving into the next track, Steven, we get to Steven right now.

Speaker:do analyze this album even more than I have, which I haven't really, because I just listen
Speaker:to the music and I just love every part of it, reading lyrics, but it's my own interpretation
Speaker:of it. So I think everything fits together. And so, Stephen.
Speaker:the tubular bells intro. I mean, I love that. I love that. That's the, you know, the
Speaker:exorcist. Just mentioned the exorcist. And then we get to the tubular bells, sounding
Speaker:intro, the orchestral sound that kicks in about a third of the way through the song.
Speaker:And it just it's such a such a well arranged song. Yeah, it's just so crazy.
Speaker:you out. Yeah, yeah, I mean, yeah, it's a very disturbing song.
Speaker:Very, yeah, it is. It is. You know, I like it because it just
Speaker:fits into that experience I'm talking about. Yeah, it just, I
Speaker:don't know. And then at the end, the tubular bells turn into
Speaker:strings, they do it with the strings, which is just fucking
Speaker:awesome. Yeah, it is such a great way to close out that song. It
Speaker:just oh man. Yeah. Awesome. Yeah, it is. And then then I mean,
Speaker:the awakening, which is the next track. I mean, it's it's like
Speaker:we talked to before it's like the horror movie genre all over
Speaker:again, but I mean, it's like everything is merged together. I mean, it blows my mind
Speaker:every time I listen to it, because everything, I mean, it's so genius to write an album like
Speaker:this. So I mean, not every song is my favorite, but I couldn't go without any of them. Because
Speaker:even though I think there are songs on there which are sort of like male.
Speaker:But when I listen to it, it's sort of like if you see the Jaws movie and all of a sudden
Speaker:you see the Jaws attacking the boat to Orca and all of a sudden when he attacks it's
Speaker:clipped, I mean it's cut out to something completely different on the beach and you
Speaker:don't get to see the Jaws, I mean the shark anymore, it's sort of like what the fuck is
Speaker:going on here. You can't have one without the auto if you know what I mean.
Speaker:Right. Everything is supposed to be there. Yeah. So what's your take on that?
Speaker:You know, I love the way it rolls in from the last song. Yeah. Keeps that really
Speaker:disturbing feel. You know, you got this hungry kid in a basement. So much chaos
Speaker:going on in this song. Yeah. Because the guitar seems to be playing a completely
Speaker:different song. Yeah. But but it's on purpose, I think, to give
Speaker:it that disoriented feel. Yeah, right. It's not like Megadeth
Speaker:that it's just whatever the fuck that was. This is on purpose
Speaker:to give it that Oh, like what the hell's going on, right? So
Speaker:yeah, I great. Yeah, great song. Great song. Yeah. And
Speaker:I was going to to escape. I'm okay. Everything it's you're
Speaker:gonna escape. I'm escaping. I'm escaping. I can't with it.
Speaker:Wait, it's it's like the madness you were talking about, it's
Speaker:debauchery. I mean, Stephen gets out and and everything is
Speaker:fucking chaos. And and, and, and that's the end to this great
Speaker:like concept album if you know what I mean. Yes. I mean,
Speaker:everything. I mean, you couldn't have escape without without
Speaker:welcome to my nightmare department or youth or or any of the
Speaker:other songs. So you have to have this too. I mean, it's I mean,
Speaker:it's it's rock and roll, man.
Speaker:Yeah, I think it's got that Department of Youth feel to it.
Speaker:Yeah, this one does it. It's like, I feel like this, I could
Speaker:totally hear kids doing this one. Yeah. Yeah, I get it's a it's a
Speaker:great song.
Speaker:And talking about closing, closing songs, we talked about
Speaker:this before some of the some of the albums that we talked about
Speaker:before we're beginning, I mean, we're sitting there wondering,
Speaker:what the fuck did they close with this song? Yeah, that's a
Speaker:horrible one. Talking about going out on top with this one.
Speaker:It's it's it's just fit starts strong and strong, strong
Speaker:throughout. It's I gave it a 10 for 10. Because it's so well put
Speaker:together. It's, it's an experience. It tells a story. It's, it goes, you mentioned concept
Speaker:album a second ago, I think it goes well beyond like something that mine crime did, right? It
Speaker:goes way beyond a concept record. This is, this is something. I don't know if we ever really seen
Speaker:anything like this again on record that gives it such a powerful image.
Speaker:And I don't know, it deserves to be up there, I think.
