One man survived September 11. The other did not. Both had prayed almost the same prayer.

In the first episode of Prayers from the Rubble, America Pray Now Prayer Partner Lise Pampaloni shares the stories of Sujo John, a young immigrant on the 81st floor of the North Tower, and Father Mychal Judge, the FDNY chaplain who ran toward the towers as his firefighters ran in.

One had prayed, “God, use me.” The other had prayed, “Lord, take me where you want me to go.”

Two men. Two prayers. Two very different answers.

And together, their stories raise a question we may not be able to answer easily: What does it mean to surrender to God when surrender doesn’t guarantee safety?
