Directed by Jörg Buttgereit (Nekromantik, Schramm) and co-written by Buttgereit and Franz Rodenkirchen (Nekromantik, Schramm), the Bloody Pit of Horror said the film "steers away from the grotesque gore for a more serious, though leisurely, look at necrophilia," while Tales of Terror said "it crumbles when it becomes surreal and pretentious, which it often does." I agree, though "leisurely" is a bit kind. It's slow. So. Damned. Slow...
