The Golden Girls premiered in 1985. The show revolved around four older single women (three widows and one divorcée) all sharing a house in Miami. The show lasted 7 seasons and I have watched each of the 180 episodes multiple times. The show is genius and dare I say that I learned a lot about sarcasm and comedic timing from this show - especially from Dorothy’s character.

There is no doubt that the show is funny, but it is also extremely deep - and it has a number of life lessons to teach. Listen in to hear the life lessons we can all learn from those four Golden Girls.

Let me tell you a story.

Picture it Sicily.

That was how every Sophia story started.

I was nine years old when the golden girls premiered in 1985.

The show revolved around four older single women, three widows, and one divorce.

Say all sharing a house in Miami.

I was immediately taken with these ladies.

You see.

When I was nine years old, I was living most of the time at my Nana's house.

And during that first season of the show, like the three characters,

my Nana would also become a widow.

The show lasted seven seasons.

And I have watched each of the hundred and 80 episodes multiple times.

The show is genius.

And dare I say that I learned a lot about sarcasm and comedic timing from this show.

Especially from Dorothy's character.

But the show is deep.

And it has a number of life lessons that we can take from it.

Here are just some of the lessons from those four golden girls.

One never be afraid to give your friends your honest opinion.

These ladies never shied away from telling each other exactly what was on

their minds and in their hearts from small stuff to big from wardrobe advice,

all the way to relationship advice.

Start getting in the habit of telling your friends how you really feel.

If he can't speak to your friends, honestly, then who can you, your

friends will still be there for you even when you were honest with them.

And maybe because you're honest with them.

Too.

The older you get the better you get, unless you're a banana.

These ladies were fierce.

They were still living life to the fullest and each and every day, give them new

learning experiences and added knowledge.

And I just absolutely loved that.

Three.

Differences are a good thing.

These four ladies could not have been more different from each other, but

they didn't try to change each other.

They understood that diversity of thought.

Backgrounds reactions and even emotions made the group better.

For.

Be confident.

One day.

I want to walk into a room with as much confidence as blanche Devereaux walks

everywhere with that woman is unapologetic about how amazing she thinks she is.

There's one scene where she comes out of her bedroom in a green dress

and tells the ladies that this is the dress that's going to stop traffic.

Yes, girl.

Imagine if you could walk into every room, whether that be a conference

room, a boardroom or a bedroom with that level of self-confidence.

Five.

Laughter is necessary in good times.

It's great.

But in bad times, it's an absolute necessity.

Six.

Have your friends back.

There was a scene in one of the episodes where Dorothy Rose and

blanche find themselves in prison cell with a number of other women.

They were in that prison cell because they were arrested for prostitution,

but that's a whole different story.

When one of the women in this cell starts threatening rose and blanche, Dorothy

steps up to the plate to fend them saying, if you want to fight with someone, you

fight with me, but I'm warning you.

I spent time in Attica.

Attica is a men's prison.

The woman says, I know, says Dorothy, I was there a year before they found out.

I want Dorothy in my corner all the time, but I also want to

be a Dorothy for my friends.

Seven.

Gather around the table.

Cheesecake optional in good times and bad.

These women gathered around that kitchen table and talk to each other.

When the times were really bad, they cheesecake while they talked.

Ask for advice when you need it.

Ask for help when you need it.

Offer it to your friends when they need it.

Gather together to work through life's problems.

And lastly.

Friendship is one of life's greatest gifts.

We need friends to travel this road with this.

They make the good times better.

And when the road gets difficult, they help us through the bad

times because like Sophia said.

Fasten your seatbelts slut puppy.

This ain't going to be a cakewalk.

I know there are many more, but these are the ones that resonated with me this week.

This week, the drink of the week is called zinger named after

and inspired by golden girl.

Dorothy's born AQ.

Here's what you're going to need.

First.

You're going to have to make a ginger syrup and it's super easy.

All you're going to do is combine equal parts, water and sugar.

I usually use a fourth of a cup of water and a fourth of a cup of

sugar, and then two inches of peeled ginger sliced, and you put that all

in a saucepan overload heat, and you heat it until the sugar dissolves.

And then you take it off of the heat and you allow it to steep for 15 minutes

and then you strain out the ginger.

So now you've got your ginger syrup and for the cocktail, what you're going

to do, just two ounces of whiskey.

A half ounce of that ginger syrup, a half ounce of fresh lime juice, ginger

beer, and then lime wedges for garnish.

Fill a tall glass with ice and then add the whiskey syrup lime juice and stir.

And then top it with a ginger beer and garnish with that wedge of lime.
