Why do you need another podcast about leadership in your life?
Lee:This is the question I asked myself earlier this year, when I first
Lee:started plotting leaders with impact.
Lee:I was pulling a thread, one that I'd picked up when I started my business
Lee:sunday skies just over two years ago.
Lee:And it's woven its way through my how to take the lead collaboration
Lee:with Carrie-Ann from cat's pajamas.
Lee:And this thread was that there was still a long way to go to improve the
Lee:standards of leadership in our companies.
Lee:I know you don't need me to tell you the problems are in and out of
Lee:the media, all across social media.
Lee:And if you listen to my other podcast, you know, that we debunk
Lee:many of the myths and stereotypes.
Lee:What I realized is that whilst many people recognize the problems and want
Lee:to change the way leadership's done.
Lee:Many people actually want to be a different kind of leader themselves.
Lee:They're not always sure how to go about it.
Lee:I'm Lee Griffith, a communication strategist, executive coach, and
Lee:all around champion of leaders who shun the old school stereotypes.
Lee:I'm here to help you get clear on your strategy, implement some self-leadership
Lee:and connect with those you serve through your communications so that
Lee:you can deliver improved organizational performance, engagement, and reputation.

Lee:Leadership's hard.
Lee:It's lonely, but it can be so rewarding for you and your
Lee:organization if done well.
Lee:And that's why I think we need more voices talking about the realities of leadership
Lee:and challenging the way we do things.
Lee:We need different role models.
Lee:Let's stop celebrating the old archetypes.
Lee:Stop repeating the mantras of the so-called gurus.
Lee:And let's show there can be a different way.
Lee:That you can lead with values, integrity, great communication vulnerability,
Lee:and still be high-performing.
Lee:So my intention with this podcast is to prove it's possible.
Lee:By talking to those leaders who do things differently.
Lee:By sharing practical changes you can make from experts that you're
Lee:not going to find in your typical leadership development courses.
Lee:And by exploring the insights I have as someone who's worked in
Lee:corporate roles for almost 20 years.
Lee:I was often one of the youngest female leaders in the teams I worked in,
Lee:who's a self-proclaimed introvert and has learned the hard way by
Lee:trying to follow the outdated rules.
Lee:This podcast is all about making the right impact as a leader.
Lee:And for this first episode, I want to take it back to the basics of why you
Lee:might not be hitting the notes that you'd hoped for when you first started in post.
Lee:From the leaders I've worked with -both in my corporate career and through sunday
Lee:skies- whilst the problems they present with a varied ranging from operational
Lee:performance issues, financial worries, low staff morale, poor customer satisfaction,
Lee:falling organizational reputation.
Lee:There are only three reasons that things are going in the wrong direction and
Lee:they all revolve around leadership.
Lee:Reason one.
Lee:Strategy.
Lee:And I don't mean your organizational strategy, although that
Lee:obviously can be an issue too.
Lee:I'm talking about your personal leadership strategy.
Lee:Your roadmap.
Lee:It's how you provide clarity to yourself and others about where you're
Lee:trying to take the organization.
Lee:It's the markers you set to show the way for the bigger
Lee:picture organizational strategy.
Lee:If you don't know what you're trying to achieve as a leader for
Lee:your organization, how are you expecting other people to follow you?
Lee:High impact leaders are really clear on their personal vision and strategy.
Lee:They know what their role is in delivering the aims in the organization.
Lee:They understand the state of the organization and elements
Lee:of their leadership approach that would be most valuable.
Lee:For example, are they a fixer that's going to come in when things are bad.
Lee:Are they a turnaround person focused on short-term survival?
Lee:Maybe they're the culture builder the slow burner who's going to nurture and rebuild.
Lee:These leaders are clear with themselves and their board about who they are, where
Lee:they'll take the organization and who they need around them to compliment and
Lee:balance their strengths and weaknesses.
Lee:Reason two is self leadership.
Lee:I believe that you can't successfully lead others if you
Lee:don't know how to lead yourself.
Lee:The best leaders know what they stand for, are clear in their style
Lee:and approach, have tried and tested ways to stay in touch with what's
Lee:happening without working in the weeds.
Lee:They get that balance between strategy and execution just right.
Lee:They're clear with others in how they work.
Lee:They set and stick to boundaries.
Lee:They create alignment across their teams.
Lee:They take care of themselves.
Lee:The nub of it is they know what conditions they need to set to
Lee:be high-performing themselves and to enable others to be the same.
Lee:And the third reason leaders often make the wrong impact is communication.
Lee:It's the thing that pulls everything together for high impact leader.
Lee:It's the how.
Lee:How you convey your strategy and self-leadership as part of the
Lee:day-to-day execution of your role.
Lee:It's how you demonstrate clarity in your message, knowing who you need
Lee:to engage with, having a rhythm of communications and engagement in
Lee:order to build trust and reliability.
Lee:It's the cog that keeps everything else moving.
Lee:Impactful leaders are normally outstanding communicators.
Lee:And I'm not talking jazz hands or full of charisma.
Lee:You'll see all styles and approaches.
Lee:But a leader who does this well, first and foremost is listening and
Lee:understanding the environment, the context and the people that they work with.
Lee:They're testing what they see and they hear, and they're using that information
Lee:to inform their strategy and approach.
Lee:They know where they need to build a nurture relationships.
Lee:They work on everyone being able to tell the story of the organization.
Lee:Strategy.
Lee:Self leadership.
Lee:Communication.
Lee:There are no other reasons that you're not making the right impact.
Lee:If you don't have these three elements nailed as leader,
Lee:then you're going to struggle.
Lee:And you see this when leaders fail.
Lee:It's usually because a) They've not taken people with them to
Lee:deliver their vision and strategy.
Lee:B) they're chaotic in the way they manage themselves and their
Lee:work, creating mistrust and disruption amongst their people.
Lee:And C) it shows up through their communications or the lack of it, what
Lee:they do or don't do, how it is, or isn't said, whether they demonstrate
Lee:empathy, listening, compassion, trust.
Lee:If they show vulnerability.
Lee:These three reasons are so interlinked that to have a weakness in one
Lee:area will impact the other two.
Lee:So if you've not been having the right impact, If your metrics are going
Lee:in the wrong direction, if people aren't getting behind your vision,
Lee:or if your board or key external stakeholders are questioning your value.
Lee:You need to troubleshoot what the real issue is.
Lee:Well, that's it for the first episode is a really short one, but hope it's
Lee:given you an insight into some of the themes we're going to be exploring in
Lee:more detail through future episodes.
Lee:And hope it's given you a chance to reflect on the type of impact
Lee:you want to be having as leader.
Lee:And maybe start to think about how you fare against the three
Lee:reasons leaders often fall down.
