In this episode of The Living Conversation, we continue our conversation with Banya Lim—a spiritual acupuncturist and energy coach—about how emotions become energetic blockages in the body, and how healing starts with awareness rather than self-judgment.
Banya explains how repeated thoughts can “feed” sensations in the body past the famous 90-second window, why blockages aren’t enemies (they’re trying to help), and her four pitfalls that keep patterns stuck: identifying, judging, suppressing, and trying to get rid of the thought/emotion.
We also explore a practical grounding technique for anxiety and public speaking: bring attention to the hara / dantian (chihai)—and even place a hand there, press, or tap to gather energy and settle the system. Finally, Banya connects the Five Elements to house directions and emotional clearing—like cleansing the east side for wood/liver/anger—as a simple way to “move energy” in daily life.

I'm Anthony Wright and I am your host today with my co host Adam Dietz.
Speaker A:Welcome back.
Speaker A:And we are here with our guest Banya Lim who is an acupuncturist and an energy coach.
Speaker A:And before the break Banya, we were talking about that there are no accidents.
Speaker A:But I'd like you to talk about now that we are here and our guests are listening.
Speaker A:Our, our listeners are listening.
Speaker A:Can you talk about energy coaching please?
Speaker B:Okay.
Speaker B:Yes, there's no accident.
Speaker B:I really believe the universe is designed very clear the clear and also it's very math mathematical Always one plus one is two.
Speaker B:And in this design there is a way we can do way that we can think way that we can have emotion to create the reality that we want and create the body that we want.
Speaker B:There's earlier I told you the direct correlation between emotion and how the body works and how the body manifests when we have a consist continuous negative emotion.
Speaker B:Yes.
Speaker B:Creates energy within the body and creates a blockage.
Speaker B:Blockages on the meridian system.
Speaker B:And that emotion, if we keep having that emotion it end up creating more.
Speaker B:Our bodies basically start speaking very loud.
Speaker B:Oftentimes our body speak to us very subtly until the point when we don't pay attention, it starts screaming and that could be pain, aches, ailments and so on.
Speaker B:Not only that, when you, when you have a certain things that you want to create in your life, you feel like it's just not getting there.
Speaker B:There is actually blockages within the body.
Speaker B:Chi master system is about helping you achieve your dreams through energy system within the body.
Speaker A:Because one of the things that I remember from western psychologists talking about when someone has a trauma or they're a young person and they have no way to deal with it mentally and they will take it into the body.
Speaker A:And is this the kind of energy blockage you're talking about?
Speaker B:Absolutely.
Speaker B:I think modern days as modern psychology now I think discovering this and they actually teaching this based called a somatic therapy.
Speaker B:And it's not even the night of the mainstream yet.
Speaker B:But as far as the somatic psychology somatic therapy part has been actually it's very part of it deep rooted in an acupuncture and oriental medicine haven't really described it in a scientific way and perhaps I'm trying to bring that part through Qi mastery system.
Speaker B:So unless we heal that part, unless really release that energetic package within the body, whatever the goals that you have, it's not that you're not going to get it.
Speaker B:It will be harder to get to that point.
Speaker B:And this Blockage is going to keep coming up throughout your, throughout your life.
Speaker A:So actually coming to be aware of the blockage and that's one of the things I would imagine that you do is to assist people to be aware.
Speaker A:Oh, there's blockage.
Speaker A:So then, then what do we do?
Speaker A:Then we can release.
Speaker B:Right.
Speaker A:I suppose there are different ways of releasing the energy.
Speaker A:Can you talk about that?
Speaker B:Yes, I have a very specific techniques and method to help working around this.
Speaker B:So like you say, awareness is a very, very important first step.
Speaker A:Yeah.
Speaker B:Oftentimes most of people will.
Speaker B:We're just going by the day.
Speaker B:If you look at out the window, most people are just unaware of what's going on and just almost like a zombie moving through, through a.
Speaker B:That day.
Speaker B:So when we are aware that's a very first step and you are more than halfway there.
Speaker B:The second part is working with, with that blockages, definitely we can build a different relationship with it.
Speaker B:We have to find a way to work with it and work through it.
Speaker B:And blockages is not a bad thing, it's not a negative thing or they could be a clear negative emotion.
Speaker B:But it's there to try to help us in some way.
Speaker B:Everything's happening in our bodies trying to help us in some way or some.
Speaker A:Form because I know sometimes people will get mad at themselves.
Speaker A:Oh, I've got this blockage and I've been still happening again.
Speaker A:And then you just creates more blockage.
Speaker B:Right, right.
Speaker A:Karma.
Speaker A:Yeah.
Speaker B:So anyway, the block is often related to, connected to certain thoughts.
Speaker A:Right.
Speaker B:We have this repeating thoughts going in our mind.
Speaker B:And so when you have an awareness of that thought, that's very first step, very important.
Speaker B:Like I said, we have to work on not doing these four things.
Speaker B:One is identifying with it.
Speaker B:Second is judging it.
Speaker B:Third suppressing it.
Speaker B:Four actively trying to get rid of.
Speaker A:It because it's just there to try to take care of you.
Speaker A:Is that right?
Speaker B:Right.
Speaker A:Yeah.
Speaker A:So then you accept and, and ask.
Speaker A:Ask what it wants.
Speaker A:Maybe.
Speaker B:Yes, yes.
Speaker B:When we do any of these four things, we are giving power to that thought.
Speaker A:Right.
Speaker B:Energy to that thought.
Speaker B:And that's humans.
Speaker B:Humans are very good at doing that.
Speaker B:But when we just let it be and just feel that sensation, energy in the body and actually neuroscience actually figured this out actually that if as a thought emotion, as a sensation in the body, if you let it be, it will pass through after 90 seconds.
Speaker A:Oh, that's right.
Speaker A:That's right.
Speaker A:I remember Joe Bolte Taylor talking about this.
Speaker A:And it's just a.
Speaker A:And if you.
Speaker A:And it's so Interesting how people can hang on to anger every 90 seconds for 30, 40 years.
Speaker B:Right.
Speaker B:You know, so because of these thoughts, right?
Speaker B:So thoughts feeding this sensation in the body.
Speaker B:If we just let go of these four things and let that be just cloud in the sky pass through.
Speaker B:Because when you identify that, you become that thought.
Speaker B:But the truth is that thought is not you.
Speaker A:Yeah, that's right.
Speaker B:Thought is thought to pass something passing by.
Speaker B:So stream on the, on the ground.
Speaker B:When we get to do these four things, we give power to that and the energetically stays.
Speaker B:It stays in the body.
Speaker B:You know, they found that the animals in the nature don't have, don't suffer from cancer as like humans or some of the very serious disease.
Speaker B:And that's where I'm trying to figure out what the reason was.
Speaker B:The main reason is they don't hold on to that thoughts.
Speaker B:They don't hold on to that emotion based on that thoughts.
Speaker B:Have you seen like two animals fighting, like ready to try to kill each other that after a few minutes they shake it away in this peacefully walking.
Speaker A:Wow.
Speaker A:Yes.
Speaker B:Humans don't tend to do that.
Speaker B:Like I auto, I'm gonna hold on to this anger.
Speaker B:You did that to me.
Speaker B:Or whatever that might be.
Speaker B:We're very good at creating that energy.
Speaker B:So it stays in our body more than 90 seconds.
Speaker A:Right.
Speaker B:Then keep feeding that energy.
Speaker B:The another good thing is that if we have energetical blockage, energetic blocks within the body and literally it has a zip code within the body part of what energetic system, we can go there, energetically remove it and open the channel.
Speaker B:And there's actually a very specific guided meditation that I do to help open that up and whatever feeling that you have based on the block.
Speaker B:Let's say I want to be the CEO of my company.
Speaker B:What is the emotional blockage?
Speaker B:I. I don't.
Speaker B:I feel like I'm not good enough.
Speaker B:And that's actually energetic energy within the body.
Speaker B:And it has a zip code in your body.
Speaker B:The moment you say I am not good enough, you feel it somewhere.
Speaker B:It could be in the throat, it could be in the chest, it could be in the gut.
Speaker B:And there's energy opposite to that also exists within the body.
Speaker B:I am good, I am powerful.
Speaker B:The moment you say you also feel that in your body.
Speaker B:I'm a warrior, you, you can feel that in your body and you let those two part communicate.
Speaker B:That's one way to do it.
Speaker B:There's several, several other ways to do it.
Speaker B:Knowing that you feel the blockages, but also something opposite that also exists in the body and you can access that.
Speaker B:Oftentimes what we were trying to get to, to do that goal, whatever the goal you have is the sense of feeling.
Speaker B:What is the feeling and at the being part that I told you earlier is the being part.
Speaker B:Oftentimes it's.
Speaker B:Most of people are almost the same thing.
Speaker B:It's peace, love and safety or security.
Speaker A:And would you say that people get into habits about, oh, you know, I'm going to be mad at this person or I'm going to have this, Because I, I work sometimes with people with public speaking and they think, oh, you know, they get very anxious, you know, and they're worried.
Speaker A:And so I try to assist them to move anxiety out of the body and sometimes they will have a little bit left because it's trying to take care of them.
Speaker A:But would you talk about people's habits about holding energy and how do you assist people to let go of those habits?
Speaker B:Earlier I told you that everything happens in our body for a reason.
Speaker B:Yeah, everything happens in our life is for a reason.
Speaker B:Everything happening in our body is trying to help us and support us.
Speaker A:Uhhuh.
Speaker B:And that very blockages, very thing that doesn't make you feel good is actually trying to help you and work with it, work around it on an energetical, on a sensational, on, on a sensation level.
Speaker B:So this is a part that we have to cut this part up.
Speaker B:And just feeling on a physical level and energetical level.
Speaker C:We often talk about it in this show as maybe like a flow state.
Speaker C:You're not thinking anymore.
Speaker C:You're just feeling and moving and feeling, like you said, peaceful.
Speaker C:You're feeling in a flow.
Speaker C:I want to go a little bit of a different direction here for a second and just ask a couple questions.
Speaker C:We're coming up on a time of year where I learned about this much later in life where it's very common.
Speaker C:I don't know if you have this experience or not.
Speaker C:Very common in Chinese culture, I think, but I don't know about Korean culture where this time of year we actually clear space out of the home, do a space clearing, do a purge to allow new energy to come into the home.
Speaker C:Are you familiar with this?
Speaker B:Yes.
Speaker B:I mean, maybe in Western culture it's more in a springtime.
Speaker B:They do spring cleaning of the house, but this can be done any part of any time of the year or any season of the year.
Speaker B:But beginning of the year is when you're trying to start something new, trying to bring new energy into your body.
Speaker B:I mean, literally just cleaning out the house you will feel it.
Speaker A:Yeah.
Speaker B:Don't you feel it in your body?
Speaker A:We're on the verge of a new year and also we're coming up in another short break.
Speaker A:So I'm Anthony Wright and I am your co host today with Adam Dietz on the Living Conversation.
Speaker A:And we are talking with our guest Banya Lim, who is a spiritual acupuncturist.
Speaker A:And how can people contact you, Banya?
Speaker B:Go to my website, banyalim.com b a n y a l I m dot com and you can sign up for.
Speaker B:All the listeners here can sign up for my free clarity session.
Speaker A:Oh, that's great.
Speaker A:All right, we'll take a short break and be right back.
Speaker A:So stay tuned.
Speaker A:I'm Anthony Wright and I am your host today on the Living Conversation with my co host, Adam Dietz.
Speaker A:Thanks for joining.
Speaker A:Our guest is Banya Lim.
Speaker A:And Adam, before the break you had asked about.
Speaker A:Ask Banya about cleaning out, cleaning house, clearing out the energy.
Speaker A:And this is a perfect time of year to do it right after the first of the year.
Speaker A: We're in early January of: Speaker A:And Banya, you were talking about that in the west we kind of think about spring cleaning and yet this can happen more than just once a year.
Speaker A:Would you say, Banya?
Speaker B:Yes.
Speaker B:Earlier I told you about based on five elementary direction that you can work on.
Speaker B:Let's say if you want to going back to wood, wood organs, liver and gallbladder.
Speaker B:If you feel like liver and gallbladder needs some cleansing, go to the east side of the house and see what's going on there and just clear out that area.
Speaker A:And what emotion is that?
Speaker B:Anger.
Speaker A:Okay.
Speaker A:And then would you talk about the emotions associated with the directions please?
Speaker B:Okay.
Speaker B:West side is more connected to sadness then connected to lungs and large intestine.
Speaker B:And water is connected to fear and it's connected to south.
Speaker B:And water is connected to.
Speaker B:Water is connected to kidneys and bladders.
Speaker B:Actually connected to fear.
Speaker B:Yeah, fear.
Speaker B:And it's connected to north side.
Speaker A:Oh, okay.
Speaker B:The center of a house is connected to earth and its emotion is worry.
Speaker A:Okay.
Speaker B:Yeah.
Speaker A:So then to clear the emotions, there you, in your literature, you talk about mindfulness and it's about being in this present moment.
Speaker A:Is that right?
Speaker B:Yes, yes.
Speaker A:So talk more about how our guests, how our listeners can.
Speaker A:Can clear these emotions.
Speaker B:I think first thing is being aware like we talked about earlier, being aware.
Speaker A:Of what you have them.
Speaker B:Yeah.
Speaker B:And in just having inventory of what is going on in our mind and what is the repeated thoughts going in our mind we tend to go into this kind of loop of thoughts.
Speaker B:Especially when creating heaviness within the body.
Speaker B:We should always check what.
Speaker B:What kind of thoughts go thoughts.
Speaker B:Thoughts we having.
Speaker B:It tends to be we go.
Speaker B:We fall into this loop of negative thoughts.
Speaker A:Right.
Speaker A:As a habit.
Speaker B:As a habit.
Speaker B:And I always say I told you about the four thing.
Speaker B:Not doing any of those.
Speaker B:Letting go of these four things.
Speaker B:Judging, identifying, suppressing and trying to get rid of.
Speaker B:When you don't do this after that.
Speaker B:Forgiveness can be a powerful tool here.
Speaker A:Oh yeah.
Speaker B:Everything earlier I told you everything happening in our life and body is happening for reason.
Speaker B:We don't look at it that way because we only tend to look at like what things are not going our way.
Speaker B:What.
Speaker B:What kind of things are h. Bad things happening.
Speaker B:But when you accept that there's this perfect wisdom and perfect order in the universe, you also have to accept that everything happening here and everything that I felt and experienced happening for a reason.
Speaker B:But there is negative thought, negative feeling happening.
Speaker B:Forgive.
Speaker B:Forgive yourself.
Speaker B:Forgive.
Speaker B:Based and say and based on.
Speaker B:And also you will see the lesson behind all of those.
Speaker B:Maybe not right away.
Speaker B:And it's okay if you can be able to energetically forgive.
Speaker B:That's so good.
Speaker B:And you'll see the lesson and why that happened.
Speaker B:And then we rephrase that thought.
Speaker B:Let's say I am not.
Speaker B:I'm not good enough.
Speaker B:And then forgive.
Speaker B:I forgive myself for having this thoughts the re.
Speaker B:By having this thought actually it helped me to work harder.
Speaker B:It helped me to do things in different way and helped me to work more diligently.
Speaker B:But I'm letting this go and I'm.
Speaker A:So ahead of me.
Speaker C:Had a. Yeah, sorry.
Speaker C:Sorry.
Speaker C:I like.
Speaker C:I like listening.
Speaker C:So I don't want to interrupt but this is really something that has a theme for our living conversation.
Speaker C:Because you know, teaching students at 101 university level each, introducing them to philosophy, sometimes they don't have an interest.
Speaker C:But you say philosophy is for everything and philosophy is for inside your mind to have higher perspective on your own emotions, higher perspective on your own feelings.
Speaker C:So when you have this higher perspective then you can.
Speaker C:You can do.
Speaker C:And in your system it makes me think of okay, philosophy can help me sit with something for 90 seconds, let it pass.
Speaker C:If I have philosophy, I know I want to have wisdom.
Speaker C:I don't just attach to this trouble and keep it going.
Speaker C:I can have some wisdom and let it pass for 90 seconds.
Speaker C:So I think it's really wonderful that comes along with our living conversation and philosophy in general.
Speaker C:Would you just have you ever had a chance to reflect.
Speaker C:I know that it sounds like your first teacher was your mother.
Speaker A:Is it true?
Speaker B:Yeah.
Speaker C:Yeah.
Speaker C:Have you ever had a chance to reflect on some things that you learned just as a child, just from your mother that influenced your philosophy that maybe we in the west don't often have exposure to that will give us a new insight?
Speaker B:Yeah.
Speaker B:What comes down to everything she trying to teach me is also about body.
Speaker B:All never lies.
Speaker A:Oh, yeah.
Speaker C:My mother was the same way.
Speaker B:Yeah.
Speaker B:Always tell our bodies, always tell us the truth.
Speaker B:Even how much you trying to hide, how embarrassed your face turned red, how much you trying to not be scared.
Speaker B:You get have a chill going down the spine.
Speaker B:Our body continuously, consistently tell us the truth.
Speaker B:So listening to what's going on in the body, I think it's something that we haven't learned.
Speaker B:Making practice to listen to the body will be one of the very powerful practice that anyone can do.
Speaker C:Have you heard different feedback from your clients as to how they've had some success with doing that?
Speaker B:Oh, yes.
Speaker B:Oh, yes.
Speaker C:Do you have some examples for our listeners to maybe picture that?
Speaker B:So I had a client who had to speak front of a big group of people and she got very nervous and nothing worked.
Speaker B:Letting go of these four things didn't work.
Speaker B:It's so I could see that she couldn't separate her head from her body.
Speaker B:Just drop into the body and feel the body.
Speaker B:And when we get to access the energy of the body, it's easy.
Speaker B:But if you cannot do it, one of the very simple but powerful thing you can do is focus on your dantian dan.
Speaker B:And this is one of one out of 165 acupuncture points.
Speaker B:Very powerful point.
Speaker B:And every.
Speaker B:On 100, 300, 365 points have name.
Speaker B:And of course there's Chinese character.
Speaker B:The name of this hara is chihai.
Speaker A:It's a sea, the hara.
Speaker A:Yeah.
Speaker B:By bring your mind into that area, you can literally feel the energy, but also gather energy.
Speaker B:And it can.
Speaker B:If it.
Speaker B:If that doesn't help, put your hand on your hara, which is right below your belly button.
Speaker A:It's like three fingers below the belly button and inside the body.
Speaker B:Yes.
Speaker A:Y. Yeah.
Speaker B:If that does not hur.
Speaker B:Press down that point.
Speaker B:If that doesn't help, tap on the point.
Speaker B:Some of the qigong practice has been developed on just pounding on this point.
Speaker A:Really?
Speaker B:Yes.
Speaker A:Wow.
Speaker B:Yeah.
Speaker C:I'm feeling my body just talking about it.
Speaker A:Yeah.
Speaker A:Yeah.
Speaker A:But I mean, I think that I've.
Speaker A:I've also heard, you know, that that is A, a place to move.
Speaker A:When you move from the Hara, there's a tremendous amount of body support and body power and it's not in the mind, you know, it, it's, it's, it's, it's very.
Speaker A:But I can, I can imagine that some people are very unfamiliar with that.
Speaker A:So it's more a matter of allowing them to become aware, you know, to say okay because I will ask sometime, you know, where is that point?
Speaker A:If it was, where is, where are you in your body if you were, if there was a point, you know, sometimes people are in the head, sometimes people in the chest.
Speaker A:But then to move it to the Hara is tremendously useful.
Speaker B:Yeah.
Speaker A:In, in we're right at the bout at the end of the interview right now.
Speaker A:And if there was one thing you wanted our listeners to know about your work that could, could assist them, what would that be?
Speaker B:Body tells the truth but body also helps you to get to your dream.
Speaker B:Let's tap into the energy of the body and going back to the horror thing, most of the people who are living like upside down triangle, the energy is in the head.
Speaker B:The moment you focus and bring your energy down to your Hara or Dantian, you become this very grounded center energy.
Speaker A:Well, thank you so much for being with us and thank you for leaving us in this grounded state with our awareness now in the Hara.
Speaker A:I'm very, very grateful for, for you being our guest today.
Speaker A:I'm Anthony Wright and I've been your co host with Adam Dietz.
Speaker C:Thanks for joining today.
Speaker A:Our our guest today has been Banya Lim and how can people contact you Banya and tell us a little bit about what you offer with your online consultation.
Speaker B:Well, I will offer your audience free clarity session.
Speaker B:They can go to my website banyalim.com b a n y a l I m dot com to sign up.
Speaker A:Great.
Speaker A:All right, thanks so much for listening and we will see you next time.
