Nathan:

that you may be sons of your Father in heaven; for He makes His sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust.

Jesus. Matthew 5:45. Hi, it’s Nathan, and this is a BONUS Day of 30 Days on the Mount of Blessing. For this bonus, we circle back to an earlier verse. “He makes His sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust.” The good life experienced by every human being is owed to the generous character of God. This statement by Jesus reinforces the non-coercive nature of God’s love. He does not use his resources to manipulate or compel. Rather, he wishes to win the trust of human hearts out by virtue of the attractiveness of his own beautiful heart. What a compelling picture picture of the divine character. Human free-agency is grounded in God’s full-of-grace relationship toward all of creation. In the end, God blesses human beings because that’s his nature, all the while hoping and longing that we rebels would turn our hearts back toward his own great heart, surrendering ourselves fully to his generous care.
