Today is the feast of St Boniface, the famous evangeliser of Germany. If you haven’t read his story I encourage you to look it up - it’s an exciting one: our saint is a courageous and persevering hero. And yet one element of his story that is forgotten is that he didn’t do it by himself at all. On the contrary he had the help of many priests and laypeople. The Catholic Encyclopedia tells us “Numbers of men and women went to Germany at different times to be his helpers. Among them were Lullus, Denehard, Burchard, Wigbert, Sola, Witta..., Wunibald, Willibald and the pious women Lioba, Chunihild, Chunitrude, Berthgit, Walburga, and Thecla. With these, and others recruited in Thuringia and elsewhere in Germany, he continued his labours. The number of the faithful increased wonderfully, including many of the nobility and the educated of the country.”
The effectiveness of our priests has not changed today: just as much as then, we need laypeople around us to pray for us, support us, encourage us and work with us to bring the Gospel to all. Which priest do you assist in doing this? Will you help us?
