Speaker:

Welcome to Hip-Hop Movie Club, the show

2

:

that harmonizes the rhythm of hip hop

with the magic of movies.

3

:

On today's episode, we present our live

talkback at SteelStacks.

4

:

After our screening of the 1992 classic

Juice, starring Tupac Shakur and Omar

5

:

Epps.

6

:

We want to thank Anthony DeSanctis

at ArtsQuest and our man, DJ ARM 18,

7

:

Andrew McIntosh, for helping us

get our first screening off the ground.

8

:

We're three

9

:

oldheads who to put their old heads

together to vibe on these films for you.

10

:

I'm DynoWright, podcaster,

filmmaker, long time Hip-Hop fan.

11

:

And what you hear is not a test.

12

:

I'm JB eighties and nineties

nostalgia, junkie, long time hip hop fan

13

:

And I'm mad excited that Ludacris

is coming to Musikfest in Bethlehem, PA

14

:

this summer.

15

:

I'm BooGie, a DJ, a long time hip hop fan,

and this episode is about one of my all

16

:

time favorite movies.

17

:

So glad I've been able to

watch it on the big screen.

18

:

And now our live Talk Back on Juice.

19

:

There

we go. Hello, everyone. Check, check.

20

:

We've got sound.

21

:

Thank you for coming, those of you

who saw us for the first time.

22

:

Yeah, there's a lot to unpack there.

23

:

We're going to talk about a few things.

24

:

We've got a couple of trivia questions

for some prizes.

25

:

We'll. We'll wrap up the evening.

26

:

So first first, we'll talk about Tupac,

right?

27

:

Sure. So, yeah. I'll kick it off.

28

:

So Tupac Shakur, the late Tupac Shakur,

he was amazing in this film.

29

:

You know,

he really showed his skills as an actor.

30

:

He was only 20 years old

when this movie came out,

31

:

so he must've been around 19

when he was filming it.

32

:

So he was age 20.

33

:

So we had done a podcast episode

about this and we were just saying how

34

:

villainous he was.

35

:

Obviously he was,

he was a terrible person,

36

:

but he was so charismatic and you can see

how he influenced his friends

37

:

just because he was like giving these

38

:

speeches where he rallied the troops that

you wanted to run, run through a wall.

39

:

So I just want to talk really briefly

40

:

about his filmography

and his short amount of time.

41

:

So this movie came out in 1992.

42

:

The following

year, he came out with Poetic Justice.

43

:

He was a star of Poetic Justice.

44

:

(Yes.)

The following year, Above the Rim. Yep.

45

:

And then there was three more,

46

:

and some of them actually came out

posthumously for him.

47

:

There was Bullet, there was Gridlock’d,

and there was Gang Related.

48

:

The last two were posthumous. Yeah. Yeah.

49

:

So yeah, Tupac was just insane.

50

:

So for those of you who are familiar

with Tupac's work, I know some of you

51

:

haven't seen Poetic Justice or Above

the Rim and just saw Juice the first time.

52

:

Any of you want to say

whether Tupac's in your maybe top

53

:

echelon of rappers turned actors,

anyone want to comment on that?

54

:

We certainly do.

55

:

If you've come to some of our events

56

:

and we talk about this on the podcast

as well of

57

:

maybe our Mount Rushmore of rappers

turned actors, he's on that top.

58

:

That top four list.

59

:

Yes. You want to do a trivia question now?

60

:

Sure, sure, sure.

61

:

Tupac.

62

:

So, so, so so Tupac obviously

had auditioned for the role of Bishop,

63

:

but he actually tagged

along with another rapper

64

:

and who was auditioning and ended up

that Tupac got the role for himself.

65

:

Does anybody know?

66

:

Raise

your hand and Wright would run up the mic.

67

:

Who that rapper

68

:

was that rapper was

who had auditioned for it.

69

:

But Tupac ended up getting the role.

70

:

Anyone?

71

:

Anyone? Anyone.

72

:

Any show of hands.

73

:

I heard an answer.

74

:

Rakim. Incorrect.

75

:

Anyone else have a guess?

76

:

Why don't we give the clue

that clue number one.

77

:

Those of you who know Tupac knew

that he ran with Digital Underground.

78

:

So this person was also

in the Digital Underground.

79

:

So any other guesses?

80

:

Shock G? An answer. Incorrect.

81

:

Any other guesses? All right.

82

:

We'll go to a different question

in a little bit.

83

:

We'll just do another fact then about the

director of this movie, Ernest Dickerson.

84

:

Anybody hear of Ernest Dickerson

before this?

85

:

Couple people, maybe.

86

:

A couple real movie heads would.

87

:

But no Ernest Dickerson, Ernest

88

:

Dickerson was Spike Lee's cinematographer

for a lot of his classic films.

89

:

Do the Right Thing.

90

:

X. Mo’ Better Blues.

91

:

Mo’ Better Blues.

92

:

School Daze.

93

:

School Daze. Yeah, he was.

94

:

He was Spike Lee's main man.

95

:

Yeah.

96

:

So there's one other film that Ernest

Dickerson was the cinematographer

97

:

for was, the 1985 classic Krush Groove.

98

:

And if you like this format,

99

:

we are actually hosting the same type

of event on Wednesday, March 27th,

100

:

where we will be showing Krush Groove,

101

:

which, if you don't know,

is the story of the origin

102

:

of like Def Jam Records

with Russell Simmons.

103

:

His story, you get this,

It's like a time capsule.

104

:

You end up seeing the Beastie Boys

when they were teenagers.

105

:

L.L. Cool J. when he's a teenager.

106

:

Run-D.M.C., Run-D.M.C..

107

:

Kurtis Blow, Fat Boys

and Sheila E, many others.

108

:

Yeah.

So come out for that one as well. Yes.

109

:

All right.

110

:

So let's do another trivia question,

and we just have a couple more.

111

:

We won't keep you guys too long.

112

:

By the way, the answer to that

first one was Money B, so Money

113

:

B was the rapper who had auditioned

for the role of Bishop, and then Tupac

114

:

took it right out from under him.

115

:

Okay.

116

:

You can anyone tell me who,

and you may have saw this in the credits?

117

:

Maybe in the beginning.

118

:

Who did the music for this movie?

119

:

You got it.

120

:

You got it. The answer was the Bomb Squad.

121

:

It was actually Hank Shocklee

and the Bomb Squad.

122

:

So congratulations.

123

:

So I'll come up with the prize.

You can choose.

124

:

I got you.

125

:

Got you.

126

:

Our friend here won a Tupac Shakur

T-shirt. Yay!

127

:

Congratulations, sir. All right.

128

:

Because you want to go.

129

:

So there were a lot of cameos

and other hip hop artists in here.

130

:

Boogie, run us through who we saw.

131

:

I’ll see if I could name them all.

132

:

So we had Special Ed who played

133

:

the guy came along

and snatched Rahiem's girl from under him.

134

:

Coincidentally,

they jumped in an Audi:

135

:

Hadda throw that in there.

136

:

All right. Yeah.

137

:

That's good work by Dickerson there. Yeah.

138

:

We had a classic hip hop duo EPMD,

139

:

who was in the bar

as Blizzard was sticking up the joint.

140

:

You got Cindy Herron from En Vogue.

141

:

If you notice real quickly

while, they were in the pool hall

142

:

in the beginning

before the police came in.

143

:

Playing pool with with Tupac.

144

:

Over in the corner was the group X Clan.

145

:

They were all, it was the three of them

over there playing with him.

146

:

He was, we had Oran

147

:

“Juice” Jones was the Snappy Nappy Dugout.

148

:

I love saying it.

149

:

Snappy Nappy Dugout!

150

:

Let me see that (Treach) Yeah. Treach.

151

:

Yes. My goodness.

152

:

God, how can I forget Treach, he’s

from around my way.

153

:

Goodness God.

154

:

So Treach.

155

:

Actually, a member of Radames’s crew.

156

:

And, of course, Queen Latifah.

157

:

Oh yeah.

158

:

Can’t forget the Queen, who's

also from around my way, Queen Latifah,

159

:

who played, she's one of the judges slash

160

:

emcees at the rap, the Deejay Battle.

161

:

We also had Ed Lover, Dr.

162

:

Dre in the audience with

163

:

the Kool DJ Red Alert and also, Chuck

164

:

Chillout were also judges as well.

165

:

And Fab 5 Freddie.

166

:

Fab 5 Freddie.

167

:

And Flex.

168

:

Alexander yes, Flex.

169

:

Alexander Who was the guy who the deejay

who could not get his mixes right.

170

:

He got booted

out of the competition by Queen Latifah.

171

:

Did I think that's that's most of

the beats anybody, any old hip hop heads.

172

:

Maybe it may recognize others,

but I think we got most of them.

173

:

Yeah.

174

:

Let's do another trivia question.

175

:

So what's left is a couple of these.

176

:

Funko Pop heads, mini.

177

:

Minis. Yeah.

178

:

One is Ice Cube, one is Notorious B.I.G.

179

:

So the black and white film

180

:

playing in Steel's house that inspired

181

:

Bishop to, you know, rally the troops,

182

:

name the film or the main actor

in that scene.

183

:

Who knows that that movie was.

184

:

From that black and white film.

185

:

I thought I heard it was that someone

said, I hear it somewhere over here.

186

:

Yes. Correct.

187

:

Yeah, yeah, yeah. Right.

188

:

So who heard it.

189

:

Or who was first? You got it on the way.

190

:

you all.

191

:

You all right?

192

:

Go, go.

193

:

He's running out into the hall!

194

:

The movie is White Heat.

195

:

It was, so the movie's White Heat.

196

:

White Heat.

197

:

Yes. Classic.

198

:

Just it now I'm more of a Bo Diddley born.

199

:

Top of the. World.

200

:

Top of the world, ma! That’s

where that comes from.

201

:

Thank you.

202

:

All right.

203

:

We deliver on our prizes,

204

:

chase you, JB's running out into the hall.

205

:

Yeah. All right.

206

:

All right.

207

:

So we did the cameos,

and now we want to talk just a little bit

208

:

about the soundtrack.

209

:

The definitely a great hip hop soundtrack

210

:

and ARM was,

spinning some of these songs beforehand.

211

:

If you if you got it a little bit early,

you were in for a treat.

212

:

But three of the bigger hits.

213

:

BooGie, you want to take us through them?

214

:

Yeah well, one of my favorites was Uptown

Anthem by Naughty by Nature.

215

:

We had ‘Nuff Respect by Big Daddy

Kane and Juice

216

:

(Know The Ledge) by Eric B

and Rakim was probably the three

217

:

biggest hits

to come off of that soundtrack.

218

:

There are a plethora of others.

219

:

if you haven't checked out the soundtrack,

by all means, do so.

220

:

Teddy Riley.

221

:

Tammy Lucas, Good to You.

222

:

Those were straight up club bangers.

223

:

Party bangers right there.

224

:

Yeah. Yeah.

225

:

Strictly bangers.

226

:

Yeah. I was on the floor. Right, Right.

227

:

I think we just have one more fact,

and then we'll do

228

:

one final trivia question

that we can pretty much wrap.

229

:

Wrap up here.

230

:

Did you guys know that

there was an alternate ending?

231

:

So you saw that dramatic ending

where Bishop falls.

232

:

If you look it up on YouTube,

233

:

you can see

and we talked about on our podcast episode

234

:

as they were about to,

before they released it, they

235

:

they did a focus group

and the ending that they wanted,

236

:

Ernest Dickerson they thought about doing,

but they didn't they didn't do it.

237

:

Was that Bishop actually let go on his own

and he fell on his own volition

238

:

because he had heard sirens

and he heard police below

239

:

and he was thinking,

I don't want to live - I don't want to.

240

:

Yeah, get caught.

241

:

Test audiences didn't like that.

242

:

They didn't like having the

the villain have that much agency.

243

:

And so reluctantly,

Dickerson changed the ending.

244

:

They even added that scream at the end.

245

:

Yeah. To that effect.

246

:

Tupac wasn't too happy

about the ending being changed,

247

:

so they had to appease him by

letting him have a little bit of a scream,

248

:

as he fell.

249

:

Like a half hearted scream.

Yes, Tupac didn't like that.

250

:

But the voters, the view,

the focus group said this is

251

:

just how we're going to do it.

252

:

So that's an interesting tidbit there.

253

:

Yeah, a lot to unpack.

254

:

So we’ll do one final question

and then we'll wrap up.

255

:

Does anybody know

Tupac Shakur's middle name?

256

:

You. You got it.

257

:

It's Amaru. That's close enough. Yeah.

258

:

So he was actually named Tupac Amaru

after the very last Incan chief

259

:

leader, Incan leader.

260

:

So let me grab you a prize.

261

:

Thank you for coming to this event

and know that we've got Krush Groove

262

:

on the 27th and Andrew,

you want to get up here and talk

263

:

about Chuck D again?

264

:

here he comes.

265

:

Just want to thank you.

266

:

And you. And you.

267

:

And you and you

268

:

and everybody who came out tonight

and we've got one of our signature

269

:

events in April is Chuck D coming on April

16th to Northampton Community College.

270

:

It's going to be a conversation

271

:

between Chuck and myself

and some of our students at NCC.

272

:

Going to be a pretty live event.

273

:

We'll have a way of

DJ playing Public Enemy and so on,

274

:

and we're working on putting together

like a PE shrine.

275

:

We want to sort of

276

:

put a lot of of Public Enemy's albums

277

:

and a lot of the music

that Public Enemy inspired from that era

278

:

there and so on.

279

:

But, you know, the other thing that's

going on, we really appreciate ArtsQuest

280

:
