Shownotes

The Pigskin Dispatch podcast delves into the recently released top 100 players list of the New York Giants, celebrating the team's rich history as they mark their 100th anniversary. Host Darin Hayes begins with a brief introduction to the significance of the list, which was curated by an independent committee of esteemed journalists, NFL executives, and passionate fans. He highlights the notable names involved in the selection process, including Hall of Famers and seasoned sports writers, setting the stage for a thoughtful discussion on the rankings and their implications. As the episode unfolds, Hayes meticulously reviews the top 10 players on the list, with Lawrence Taylor unsurprisingly taking the number one spot, recognized as one of the greatest defensive players in NFL history. He expresses agreement with the top-tier selections while also noting some controversial placements, particularly the positioning of a punter at number 47, which he finds questionable. This leads to a deeper reflection on how modern biases may have influenced the rankings, prompting listeners to consider the criteria used for evaluating players from different eras.

The conversation evolves into an examination of the players who were included and those who were left out, raising intriguing questions about the selection process. Hayes passionately argues for the inclusion of former Giants quarterback Ed Danowski, who won two NFL championships, suggesting that his contributions merit recognition over some modern players whose impact may not match Danowski's legacy. Throughout the episode, Hayes provides insights into the careers of various Giants legends, balancing historical context with personal anecdotes and opinions. He invites listeners to engage with the discussion by sharing their thoughts and experiences, creating a sense of community among Giants fans and football enthusiasts alike. As the episode comes to a close, Hayes encourages listeners to explore the complete list on giants.com and stay tuned for future shows that will further celebrate the Giants' storied past.

This engaging episode serves as both a nostalgic look back at the Giants' illustrious history and a thought-provoking analysis of how player rankings can be subjective and influenced by contemporary perspectives. By dissecting the top 100 list, Hayes not only honors the legacy of the Giants but also fosters a meaningful dialogue about the evolution of the game and the players who have shaped its history. The podcast provides a platform for fans to reflect on their own favorite players and moments, ensuring that the spirit of the Giants continues to thrive as they celebrate their centennial milestone.

Darren Hayes:

In this episode of the Pigskin Dispatch podcast, we're going to talk about the Giants 100 top 100 players list out by the NFL this year and what we think about it.

Darren Hayes:

And it's all coming up with the list and more in just a moment.

:

This is the Pigskin Daily History Dispatch, a podcast that covers the anniversaries of American football events throughout history.

:

Your host, Darren Hayes is podcasting from America's North Shore to bring you the memories of the gridiron one day at a time.

Darren Hayes:

Hello my football friends.

Darren Hayes:

This is Darren Hayes of pigskin dispatch.com welcome once again to the Pig Pen, your portal to positive football history.

Darren Hayes:

And welcome to another edition of The New York Giants 100, the 100th anniversary of the New York Football Giants.

Darren Hayes:

Tonight we're going to take a look at part of the list of what came out on giants.com it's the top 100 New York Giants players for the 100th anniversary.

Darren Hayes:

And this was selected by some pretty big names and historians.

Darren Hayes:

For the Giants, it was an independent committee of award winning journalists, NFL and Pro Football hall of Fame executives and some super fans that have ranked the Giants top 100 players.

Darren Hayes:

And it was presented by Bud Light.

Darren Hayes:

It was on giants.com the Top 100 Players Committee consisted of Bob Papa, Pete Avante, Ernie, of course he, Judy Batista, John Birdie, Linda Cone, Vinnie Detroni, Bob Glauber, Joe Horrigan, Jay Horowitz, Peter King, Greg Myers, Paul Schwartz and George Willis.

Darren Hayes:

Now we've had one of those here on this show.

Darren Hayes:

Gary Myers, great Giants author and writer, covered the Giants for many, many years.

Darren Hayes:

So some great authorities, Bob Papa who covers all their games and of course you know Ernie, of course he and you know some of the other ones, Peter King and Joe Horrigan with the NFL Pro Football hall of Fame.

Darren Hayes:

So it's just some great people that have done put this together.

Darren Hayes:

But I don't know that I totally agree with their list.

Darren Hayes:

I think there might be a little bit of modern day bias to this.

Darren Hayes:

So I guess maybe the first place to start off with this is maybe we'll go over the top 10 and just so you can see who they have on there, which I don't have any problem with the way their top 10 is or the order that they have it in.

Darren Hayes:

They have, of course, you know LT Lawrence Taylor, the great middle linebacker at number one and there's no argument from anybody because he's probably the greatest defensive player that's ever played in the National Football League.

Darren Hayes:

So probably the Most valuable player ever in Giants history.

Darren Hayes:

Roosevelt Brown comes in number two on this list.

Darren Hayes:

Don't have a problem with that either.

Darren Hayes:

What a great player he was.

Darren Hayes:

Mel Hein at number three, great two way player, center linebacker on defense.

Darren Hayes:

Frank Gifford of, you know, very good back and great player for the Giants.

Darren Hayes:

Had some big plays for them in his time of playing.

Darren Hayes:

Michael Strahan, leading sack, you know, master for the Giants, you know, held this great defensive line play that he had during his era, a couple Super Bowls.

Darren Hayes:

Emlin Tunnel, we talked about him recently and all the great defensive plays that he made.

Darren Hayes:

And as a special teams returner.

Darren Hayes:

Kick, returning kicks and punts, just a very valuable weapon for the Giants during his time.

Darren Hayes:

Harry Carson played alongside lt, a linebacker and what a valuable person he was.

Darren Hayes:

So number seven on the list.

Darren Hayes:

Eli Manning, number eight, two super bowl championships, Great player, you know, said a lot of passing yardage plays for the Giants.

Darren Hayes:

Sam Huff, a great linebacker at number nine.

Darren Hayes:

And Andy Robustelli comes in at number 10.

Darren Hayes:

Now following right after them, we must go the next top 10.

Darren Hayes:

11th was Phil Sims.

Darren Hayes:

12th was Y.A.

Darren Hayes:

tittle.

Darren Hayes:

13th, Charlie Connolly, Tiki Barber was at number 14.

Darren Hayes:

Tuffy Lehman's at 15, Imani Toomer at 16.

Darren Hayes:

Might be a little bit high for Imani Toomer.

Darren Hayes:

Carl Banks at 17, Burke Bavaro at 18, Ken Strong at 19 and Jimmy Patton at number 20.

Darren Hayes:

Now many of these we've talked about already in our Giants 100 series and we've got quite a bit of history, so maybe you could check them out.

Darren Hayes:

But now let's go into what I think is a problem with this 100.

Darren Hayes:

I have a problem with that.

Darren Hayes:

Number 47.

Darren Hayes:

You have a punter, Sean Lindetta, you know, great punter, great player, very consistent.

Darren Hayes:

But you have him at number 47 above names like Ray Flaherty and Otis Anderson.

Darren Hayes:

David Deal, Tom Landry, Ward Cuff, Jumbo Elliott, he's more valuable.

Darren Hayes:

Jpp, Jason Pierre Paul, he's Sean Lindetta.

Darren Hayes:

The punter was a more valuable player the Giants echelon than he was.

Darren Hayes:

Jim Burt is 64.

Darren Hayes:

Cal Hubbard, who's in a Hall of Fame.

Darren Hayes:

Number 66 on the list, Brandon Jacobs, you know, and Red bad girl or 69 and 70.

Darren Hayes:

Antonio Pierce at number 71, Pepper Johnson all the way down at 75.

Darren Hayes:

And you're telling me that Sean Llindetta was more valuable to him.

Darren Hayes:

Now let's just look at some of Sean Lindetta's stats here and I'm have to look off screen here to get some of These things.

Darren Hayes:

But he averaged, for his career for the giants, averaged about 43.4 yards per punt, which in that era, okay, not.

Darren Hayes:

Not horrible.

Darren Hayes:

Not.

Darren Hayes:

Not the greatest in the world.

Darren Hayes:

One year.

Darren Hayes:

yards per punt in:

Darren Hayes:

I think he suffered injury that year, but he was consistent.

Darren Hayes:

But a good punter.

Darren Hayes:

Not, you know, good player.

Darren Hayes:

But I don't know that he belongs on that number 100 list.

Darren Hayes:

Somebody that probably does belong on that list that's not on there is Ed Danowski.

Darren Hayes:

You know, Ed Danowski.

Darren Hayes:

We had a great show on him.

Darren Hayes:

Ed Danowski won two NFL championships for the New York Giants, like playing quarterback.

Darren Hayes:

He was in one Pro bowl two times.

Darren Hayes:

He was an all Pro.

Darren Hayes:

Now, his numbers aren't lofty.

Darren Hayes:

He had 44 interceptions to 37 touchdowns.

Darren Hayes:

two NFL championships in the:

Darren Hayes:

You know, there's not too many quarterbacks, save Eli Manning and Phil Sims, that have two championships while they played with the New York Giants.

Darren Hayes:

As a matter of fact, they have Fran Tarkington on the list, but not Ed Danowski.

Darren Hayes:

Fran Tarkington, a great player, but probably better known as a Giant or as a.

Darren Hayes:

More than a Giant, a Viking.

Darren Hayes:

And, you know, he did have some great games.

Darren Hayes:

I think he belongs on the 100 list.

Darren Hayes:

By the way, Frame Tarkington, but not without Ed Danowski.

Darren Hayes:

Not on there.

Darren Hayes:

You know, the other name that sort of surprises me that's on there above him is Jeff Hostetler.

Darren Hayes:

The Hostetler, you know, great career.

Darren Hayes:

You know, had some really nice season filling in one year for the Giants and, you know, took him quite a ways there.

Darren Hayes:

You know, had a great run.

Darren Hayes:

But Edanowski did two times.

Darren Hayes:

Two times in six years or seven?

Darren Hayes:

Two times in seven years.

Darren Hayes:

I think that deserves him on the list above, you know, a punter or, you know, some quarterbacks maybe that didn't play all that much.

Darren Hayes:

And I'm not even saying Jeff Hosteller.

Darren Hayes:

I'm sorry, I had the wrong name.

Darren Hayes:

Kerry Collins was on that list, and Ed Danowski isn't.

Darren Hayes:

Now, Collins, again, a good player, but got bumped around the league and, you know, even for the Giants.

Darren Hayes:

You know, Kerry Collins, his stats for the Giants, he played for five years, did not take them to a championship.

Darren Hayes:

I believe he did make a Pro bowl as a Giant.

Darren Hayes:

He was in two Pro Bowls during his career, but he played on, you know, a handful of teams, and I.

Darren Hayes:

I don't know.

Darren Hayes:

No, he was not in the Pro bowl as a Giant.

Darren Hayes:

He was in Pro bowl as a Carolina Panther and once as for Tennessee.

Darren Hayes:

So.

Darren Hayes:

But Kerry Collins is on that list and Edinowski's not.

Darren Hayes:

So I don't know that I, I totally agree with that and I, I think maybe that should have been looked at.

Darren Hayes:

Maybe a little bit of bias to the modern player especially you know, Sean Lindetta being above some of these guys.

Darren Hayes:

I, I don't know, I really have a problem with that.

Darren Hayes:

But it's a great list and it's, you know, other than that and you know, just my one beef and I think some others have commented about too, but not now.

Darren Hayes:

I know some folks have commented to me about it and we'd love to Hear your opinion.

Darren Hayes:

Pigskindispatchmail.com you can send that in and we'd love to hear about it and we'll maybe even put something on that you have comments on there.

Darren Hayes:

And who were some of the folks maybe that you were disappointed to see on the list?

Darren Hayes:

One guy I was glad to see that list was Jason Sehorn.

Darren Hayes:

I think he was really a special weapon and too bad the injuries got in his way because he really could have been a special player for of the Giants.

Darren Hayes:

I was glad he made it.

Darren Hayes:

But Saquon Barkley was all the way down at 95 on this list which I found a little bit disappointing.

Darren Hayes:

You know, I talked about the, the modern day bias.

Darren Hayes:

Well, there's a guy probably that should have been bumped up on or he carried that offense here for the last few years before going to the Eagles and maybe had a little bit better career than some of the other folks that were above him on this list.

Darren Hayes:

But again we'd love to hear your thoughts and it's a great list to celebrate the giants 100.

Darren Hayes:

So I definitely want you to check it out.

Darren Hayes:

Giants.com top100players.

Darren Hayes:

Google it or go to giants.com and you know that's what you're gonna see.

Darren Hayes:

Some of those players that were talked about on there, we're gonna have some of them coming up on some future shows to talk about the New York Giants 100 season because, because we're talking about it every Monday and love to hear more about these guys and what they did for the Giants during their careers.
