A man can have a career, a marriage, and a full calendar and still not have a single real friend. Bob Wischer lived that, and he'll tell you how close it came to costing him. In his first marriage he ran the same loop for years, work, home, family, repeat, until the male friendships that once carried him quietly faded, nudged aside by a wife who guilted him out of the softball games and the beers with the guys. When that marriage ended and his kids left for college, he was standing there with a job and not much else, the friends they'd shared having gone with her in the divorce. He calls the place he landed the danger zone, the one where a man starts asking whether this is all there is and what his worth even is. Bob has known four men who never made it out of that zone.

What pulled him back is the focus of his talk with host Mike Forrester. Bob did the deeper work and uncovered a story he'd been carrying since before he was born, conceived before his parents married in a small town where that still carried real shame, so a sense of being unwanted got wired in before he ever took his first breath. Naming that changed how he understood seventh grade, his marriage, and even the divorce he filed for. From there, he rebuilt on purpose and with intentionality. He went looking for other men instead of waiting on them, he learned his wife's love language and his own after years of missing both, and he made a non-negotiable weekly date night the rule rather than the exception. He now runs Men Becoming Better Men and goes by the relationship engineer, because relationships turned out to be the thing that saved him.

Bob keeps circling back to the men he's lost, including one he taught alongside who seemed like the last person anyone would worry about. That's why he's blunt that suicide is a permanent answer to a temporary problem, and that no problem is too heavy to survive once you're sitting across from someone who actually cares. He's honest about his own blind spots too, the things you simply can't see from inside your own life, the label you can't read from inside the jar. If you've been running on empty, telling yourself the lie that you're better off handling it all alone, Bob's whole message is the opposite. You were never meant to do this by yourself, and one honest conversation is usually where the way back starts.

In this episode, you will be able to:

  • Recognize the danger zone a man can drift into when his whole life becomes work, home, and repeat
  • Understand why male friendships fade after marriage and kids, and what it costs a man to let them go
  • See how a story you absorbed in childhood, even before birth, can quietly run your relationships for decades
  • Learn the marriage habits Bob missed the first time, from real date nights to actually knowing each other's love language
  • Recognize why you sometimes have to be the first to say "I'm struggling," and why one man's cold shoulder isn't a verdict on you
  • Understand why you can't spot your own blind spots alone, and how a circle of men gives you back a zest for life
