rev karen:Today I have with me Reverend Karen Fry, who is a c e o and owner of
rev karen:Spirit Tours, l c, and she has is living so much my dream and her dream.
rev karen:But anyway, so let me tell you a little bit about Spirit Tours.
rev karen:It's a boutique tour company that leads sacred guided tours around the world.
rev karen:Focusing on spiritual experiences, connections, and being a positive
rev karen:force for good while traveling.
rev karen:She was previously the co spiritual director of C S L Sal, C S l
rev karen:Dallas for eight years with Dr.
rev karen:Petra Wildes, and she has a genu genuine love for all of life.
rev karen:She meets people exactly where they are.
rev karen:She leads with her heart and is willing to be vulnerable and real.
rev karen:I'm very excited to have you today, Reverend Karen, welcome to the show.
rev karen:Thank you.
rev karen:Yeah, Reverend Karen, you can just call me.
rev karen:I'll just call you Karen.
rev karen:so this is fantastic, but let's kind of start backwards a little bit.
rev karen:Have there been some key spiritual moments or catalytic, unexpected
rev karen:moments in your life that have led you on a spiritual transformation?
rev karen:Yeah.
rev karen:I think first of all, I have to go all the way back to 1998, which
rev karen:may or may not be that far back for some folks, but it feels far to me.
rev karen:And, I started a new company with, cement in the Bay Area, and that's
rev karen:when I actually started, because I was building a company and.
rev karen:I had time on my own cuz I wasn't with my partner.
rev karen:I was in California instead in Dallas.
rev karen:And I started just reading all kinds of spiritual books.
rev karen:Stay on the fringe, going to books, use bookstores.
rev karen:And I just started like an appetite st there of a spiritual
rev karen:life versus a religious life.
rev karen:Very different.
rev karen:And that led me into, in 2007, I ended up finding the spirituality in the faith
rev karen:that now has completely changed my life.
rev karen:Okay.
rev karen:A huge moment for me.
rev karen:I thought I've got it all.
rev karen:I left a great sales and marketing career where literally the c e O tried
rev karen:to give me a blank check to not resign.
rev karen:Wow.
rev karen:Going into ministerial school, true story, blank check, don't leave.
rev karen:I built a medical device company and I walked away from multiple
rev karen:three fig, six figure stuff.
rev karen:Yeah.
rev karen:and.
rev karen:I spent three and a half years learning how to be instead of
rev karen:do while in ministerial school.
rev karen:Okay.
rev karen:That was my goal.
rev karen:Can I learn how to be?
rev karen:Cuz I'm really good at doing.
rev karen:Anyway, fast forward, I got my ministerial license.
rev karen:I'm a minister 2013.
rev karen:I'm starting my own ministry in San Francisco.
rev karen:I live in my dream home.
rev karen:And Oakland, California in the hills.
rev karen:I got a partner.
rev karen:We're about to be married.
rev karen:we got two kitty cats, just everything.
rev karen:And I had a huge moment on a BART station.
rev karen:I just signed the lease for the new ministry in San Francisco and
rev karen:the Mission District, and I was walking off the BART train, which
rev karen:is a, bay Area rapid transit, right?
rev karen:For people that don't know that, And I'm walking off the train and I'm
rev karen:talking to my partner, telling her, how great it was and blah, blah, blah.
rev karen:And everything within me said, the voice said, stop.
rev karen:And I was like, what?
rev karen:So I'm gonna tell this as fast as I can, but I basically stop
rev karen:and a second, give me a second.
rev karen:Something's going on.
rev karen:And she was like, what's happening?
rev karen:I don't know.
rev karen:And literally in 15 seconds, a big altercation broke out between three women,
rev karen:two women attacking a BART station worker.
rev karen:And and she could hear cuz the voices got elevated, they were really
rev karen:upset with whatever was going on.
rev karen:And she said, look, don't be a hero.
rev karen:And I was like, just gimme a second.
rev karen:I need to be here.
rev karen:And the phone disconnected.
rev karen:I thought she hung up on me.
rev karen:And all I did was to be the presence of boundless love, to be that greatest
rev karen:force, that irresistible sweep.
rev karen:I stood there, I didn't look at what was going on.
rev karen:I just stood there and be loved.
rev karen:Wow.
rev karen:And these two women, they happened to be white and the black, the BART
rev karen:worker was black, African American.
rev karen:And they, I thought they were gonna kill her.
rev karen:Really?
rev karen:And the human voice was like, security guards, come on.
rev karen:No one's responding.
rev karen:This is really bad.
rev karen:But I just was being the presence.
rev karen:And I could tell one woman dropped away, but the woman cornered her in
rev karen:her little BART ticket booth Right.
rev karen:Where you get tickets.
rev karen:Yeah.
rev karen:Yeah.
rev karen:and I thought she was gonna kill her.
rev karen:And then I kid you not just like, That they started laughing, oh, I'm
rev karen:gonna cry just thinking about this.
rev karen:And he started laughing and like they were best friends.
rev karen:And the black woman said, that's the nicest thing anybody's ever said to me.
rev karen:Wow.
rev karen:Wow.
rev karen:They walked out.
rev karen:And the black woman.
rev karen:Like felt something.
rev karen:Her back was to me, Uhhuh, and she turned around and she looked right
rev karen:at me and she said, can I help you?
rev karen:And I said, no, I just came here to be love and she said Thank you.
rev karen:And I walked away.
rev karen:That was a huge moment in my life cuz I knew who I came here to be.
rev karen:And I knew what I am.
rev karen:that I am.
rev karen:And that.
rev karen:I knew is what I am to be everywhere I go.
rev karen:Wow.
rev karen:Wow.
rev karen:Often as I, but the, but the huge moment was when I got home.
rev karen:I don't share this a lot, but when I got home, I.
rev karen:I started weeping.
rev karen:I called the partner.
rev karen:I said, everything's fine, but I can't talk right now.
rev karen:Something in me said, don't the conversation.
rev karen:I got home and I started not weeping.
rev karen:I started wailing like I never wailed before.
rev karen:You hear about it, you've seen it, but like the deepest
rev karen:sorrow and all of the depth.
rev karen:So I started wailing and I was like, why am I wailing?
rev karen:I just had this mystical experience.
rev karen:Yeah.
rev karen:And the answer inside of me was, your relationship just ended.
rev karen:11 year relationship about to be married.
rev karen:Everything going in my life exactly as I wanted.
rev karen:and it was because I couldn't stand in front of you or anyone
rev karen:else and say, you can have it all.
rev karen:And not believe that I could.
rev karen:And I was settling in that relationship and had for 11 years.
rev karen:Oh my.
rev karen:And so I ended it four days later and everything changed.
rev karen:Everything had to sell the house, split the two kitty cats, and that just led to.
rev karen:Me being asked to come do ministry in Dallas and I met my soulmate eventually
rev karen:was the person who asked me to do ministry with her, and everything's unfolded since.
rev karen:So that was a huge moment.
rev karen:That one, seven months after arriving to do ministry there, I
rev karen:got diagnosed with breast cancer.
rev karen:That was a huge moment and I had to take a stand for me.
rev karen:What was the gift in that?
rev karen:That I really am, I've not really loved myself fully and completely.
rev karen:I had not really fully accepted myself as a gay woman fully and completely.
rev karen:all of that came up.
rev karen:Wow.
rev karen:and then I got to do the universal, no, this is not how my life is meant to be.
rev karen:I wasn't gonna buy into all of the culture of cancer and all of that.
rev karen:I was like, no.
rev karen:And I had 2, 2 10 tumors in my F breast.
rev karen:I was like, no, nothing's stopping me from the reality of my life.
rev karen:And then the third one was the pandemic and not being around people.
rev karen:And I love people.
rev karen:I'm an extrovert, so I got to be around birds in Dallas cuz that's all there are.
rev karen:And that's when my fa photography got ignited and my passion got reignited.
rev karen:And soon after that, after the pandemic, my father died, who I was very, my
rev karen:best friend in the world and I made a declaration, I'm not gonna waste
rev karen:one more minute of my life, right?
rev karen:I'm gonna go do what I do.
rev karen:And things have unfolded since.
rev karen:Those are, it's interesting now, I've never realized this, but all
rev karen:three of those huge events that I briefly described had to do
rev karen:with stake taking a stand for me.
rev karen:And I think many of us don't do that.
rev karen:Right.
rev karen:But everybody else first, and we've been taught it's selfish or whatever,
rev karen:but see, now I'm an inspiration.
rev karen:To you and other people because I've taken a stand for me.
rev karen:And the more people that are really happy and prosperous and doing
rev karen:what they love to do and passionate about what they're doing, it just
rev karen:expands and grows and quickly.
rev karen:And I believe we need more examples of people living life as this, cuz
rev karen:that's the way life is meant to be.
rev karen:Absolutely.
rev karen:Yeah.
rev karen:Those are three huge events in your life that you've come through a new
rev karen:person and had some kind of a, not a learning journey, but some kind of a
rev karen:personal transformation after each one.
rev karen:What do you, how do you think it's best to guide people when they're in a situation
rev karen:and, they know their life is not great.
rev karen:They know something, could be better.
rev karen:I'm just curious, do you have words of wisdom to pass on to someone else that is
rev karen:like, just do it, what is your, just do it motto my just do it motto is don't let
rev karen:your good get in the way of your great.
rev karen:Oh, and I think we, we all know when it's good, but it's not the great.
rev karen:Yeah.
rev karen:Right.
rev karen:I had a good relationship.
rev karen:Right.
rev karen:I had a really good full-time ministry in Dallas, Texas with
rev karen:a community that loved me.
rev karen:I could stay there forever.
rev karen:Yeah.
rev karen:and it's scary.
rev karen:It's scary as all get out.
rev karen:Don't get me wrong.
rev karen:I live every day.
rev karen:The fear monster comes up, right?
rev karen:And how to face that with it.
rev karen:And the roommate in my head, I know we all got one that talks to us and yeah.
rev karen:all that.
rev karen:So really, I quote, struggled just like everyone else.
rev karen:Okay.
rev karen:Right, right.
rev karen:but the biggest, so that has become my motto, don't let your
rev karen:good get in the way of your great.
rev karen:And the how, which is gonna be funny, maybe when I say this, the biggest
rev karen:tool I've learned is get clear on your what and forget about the how.
rev karen:Yeah.
rev karen:What is your what?
rev karen:Because when I'm clear my big what in ministry, letting go of some
rev karen:form, which we tend to put a form on it cuz we want to figure out
rev karen:how right is I wanna do ministry full-time and thrive while doing it.
rev karen:That was my what I wanna do ministry full-time thrive while doing it.
rev karen:Right.
rev karen:The next big, what I came up with is I want to travel the
rev karen:world with my camera in my hand.
rev karen:That was the what?
rev karen:There's no how to that there's no form to that.
rev karen:Yeah.
rev karen:Right.
rev karen:Yeah.
rev karen:Right.
rev karen:And so when I get clear on my big, what I wanna be in a relationship
rev karen:that is a full partnership, we don't leave the arena, whatever it is, no
rev karen:abandonment, whatever, So get clear on the what and forget about the how.
rev karen:Then the universe meets you and your what brings it right to you and everything
rev karen:starts to unfold and keep holding the what and my what was travel the world.
rev karen:Right.
rev karen:And keep my camera in my hand.
rev karen:And, not have to be stressed with financially how to do that.
rev karen:Right.
rev karen:And that's, I'm living right now.
rev karen:So that is the biggest thing.
rev karen:I think if one would put that into use, get very clear spend time.
rev karen:What is your what really?
rev karen:Yeah.
rev karen:What is your what?
rev karen:Yeah.
rev karen:So true.
rev karen:I know it's hard to not try to control the, how it's, I get so involved in
rev karen:the sometime, but, so let's talk a little bit about the tours and travel
rev karen:has been a lifetime thing for me.
rev karen:I think I was a late starter.
rev karen:I tried to travel young and then I got married and had
rev karen:kids and, life and I forgot.
rev karen:so it's only fairly recently that I've really started traveling internationally
rev karen:again, last 10 or 10 years or so.
rev karen:so you have this Spirit tours, you're the CEO of Spirit Tours, which is like,
rev karen:Maybe it's a dream come true for me.
rev karen:I don't know.
rev karen:I don't know that I wanna actually run a company, but I
rev karen:certainly wanna travel with them.
rev karen:so tell me, how is Spirit Tours though, different than
rev karen:me just booking a trip to Bali?
rev karen:what's different about it?
rev karen:Yeah.
rev karen:I love that you asked that.
rev karen:spirit Tours is actually a 20 plus year old company, that, about a year ago.
rev karen:I became the new co-owner with my spouse, pet Wildes, who you mentioned upfront.
rev karen:but I'm running it.
rev karen:Okay.
rev karen:Cuz she's still a minister in a community, right.
rev karen:In Dallas.
rev karen:So it's been in existence for 20 years.
rev karen:It was started because, Jim Kramer lived in Bali, raised his children in Bali,
rev karen:and then moved to Santa Rosa, California.
rev karen:And a spiritual leader there said, Hey, could you put together a tour
rev karen:for my community to go to Bali?
rev karen:That's how it got started.
rev karen:Okay.
rev karen:And Bali's still our tour.
rev karen:Okay.
rev karen:Right.
rev karen:And then it was like, where else do these spiritual leaders want to
rev karen:go with their community, et cetera.
rev karen:So the, and it's now grown in with individuals, yoga
rev karen:teachers, things like that.
rev karen:But the reason, the way it's significantly different is we come,
rev karen:first of all, it's a small group.
rev karen:We won't take more than 24 people.
rev karen:We, want that intimate, experience, people traveling
rev karen:together with like-minded people.
rev karen:And we're coming from a spiritual perspective.
rev karen:We're not coming from a tourist.
rev karen:but it's not religious.
rev karen:At all.
rev karen:And we have spiritual practice and it depends on where we're going.
rev karen:South Africa for example, we use the animals as the theme.
rev karen:what are the qualities of the animal that you could bring and embody in your life?
rev karen:Like the power of a lion placid, like a hippo?
rev karen:patience of a.
rev karen:I don't know, one of the birds there.
rev karen:Yeah.
rev karen:You know what?
rev karen:Whatever.
rev karen:Right.
rev karen:and to have new mental equivalence of that in your life by experiencing that, New
rev karen:Zealand the Hero's Journey, cuz that's where the Lord of the Rings was filmed.
rev karen:Right, right.
rev karen:And Joseph Campbell Heroes journey, we're all on this heroes journey.
rev karen:So every tour has a different theme.
rev karen:we see how we can, interlock, whether it's Hinduism, Buddism, we're not trying to
rev karen:become a Buddhist, we're not doing that.
rev karen:but how could we bring that divine wisdom from that into our life?
rev karen:Can we find the middle way, in our life?
rev karen:And so we travel together.
rev karen:Everything is taken care of for you.
rev karen:you know exactly the itinerary.
rev karen:there's also freedom for free time and, we assist free and post
rev karen:tour if you wanna go somewhere.
rev karen:But it's this experience where especially single people, widowed, divorced, or they
rev karen:just don't want to take their spouse.
rev karen:This happens a lot.
rev karen:They just wanna have their own experience.
rev karen:You can travel.
rev karen:So we have a lot of single travelers and then couples, and we meet as
rev karen:a traveling tribe ahead of time.
rev karen:Two to three times you get to know one another.
rev karen:We do that on Zoom, a lot now and then we meet.
rev karen:And everything's taken care of for the person, but you are really
rev karen:coming from a spiritual perspective.
rev karen:And when we get out of our daily life, as we know it's a vacation plus, it's
rev karen:really about spiritual transformation.
rev karen:What practices could you bring home?
rev karen:What could you now, when you get back into your daily life, keep, active?
rev karen:And practice in your life.
rev karen:And you also make great friends along the way cuz we become a community.
rev karen:Yes.
rev karen:Yes.
rev karen:We have some people as we announce a new tour, they don't need they and we keep
rev karen:the cost as low as possible so that it's not merely for, the financially elite.
rev karen:Right?
rev karen:We keep the cost low as possible.
rev karen:and that takes a lot of work to do that.
rev karen:But we do it.
rev karen:And and so we have people that actually when a tours announced,
rev karen:they say, just sign me up.
rev karen:They don't even the cost yet.
rev karen:You have, yeah.
rev karen:Yeah.
rev karen:And we have a lot of nature based because pet and I love nature
rev karen:and animals, especially here.
rev karen:And we have a lot of nature-based tours, so nature's involved in it all.
rev karen:No matter where we're going.
rev karen:So a person has the potential to come home, completely transformed internally,
rev karen:spiritually after one of these tours.
rev karen:Yes.
rev karen:As well as the connection with the other people, which.
rev karen:I think it's great because if you've ever been on a tour bus in London,
rev karen:for example, you have, everyone on the tour bus with you and you may or may
rev karen:not wanna connect with them and have a more meaningful relationship with them.
rev karen:So I think that's great that there's so many, similar values, I guess, or,
rev karen:goals of these people that come together.
rev karen:And I'm sure what would do you, would you say you have a, a
rev karen:particular reason that you loved, let's see, how do I phrase this?
rev karen:why is it important to you to put these trips out there for people?
rev karen:Because I'm sure your intention in the offer helps drive the
rev karen:people that are attracted to it.
rev karen:Right.
rev karen:Yeah, it's become my ministry.
rev karen:This is my ministry now.
rev karen:and I, first of all, when we go to new places, we see how other people live.
rev karen:how other countries, can care for the environment better than the
rev karen:country we live in, things like that.
rev karen:We really engage with every aspect of the place that, that we spend time in.
rev karen:that opens us our mind, that opens our heart.
rev karen:It, eliminates, a lot of judgment and, bigotry, things like that.
rev karen:So it's really creating this world that we.
rev karen:We can all get along and it works for all.
rev karen:Right.
rev karen:Yeah.
rev karen:I think that's significantly important that they also, the people where
rev karen:we go, whether it's Bali, Bhutan, Egypt, wherever it is, they're seen.
rev karen:US travel and having a different connection because
rev karen:we're not merely tourists.
rev karen:And so that opens their mind in their heart and they get a different aspect.
rev karen:In fact, most people can't wait for our groups to come back.
rev karen:Yeah.
rev karen:I just got an email that.
rev karen:With my tour partner in Japan, they're like, no one ever says as much gratitude
rev karen:and thank yous as right, because they tend to do it for business people and tourists.
rev karen:And so we are being that force for good in the world.
rev karen:and eventually my goal is also, I was thinking about this morning as a matter
rev karen:of fact, ways to either give away a tour.
rev karen:like have a spot where, it's given away, have scholarships, things like that.
rev karen:So for people that maybe cannot, put together a hundred percent of the
rev karen:tour price that they get to go, by, random drawings and things like that.
rev karen:So that's gonna be a part of it.
rev karen:And then we do things like, give water bottles so that.
rev karen:You're not consuming little plastic water bottles Right.
rev karen:For 10 days.
rev karen:Right.
rev karen:we're so environmentally conscious.
rev karen:Yeah.
rev karen:And we wanna do tours where it's carbon neutral, things like that.
rev karen:So it's this whole, you know what, nothing's.
rev karen:As Karen, nothing is separate, so we're Moony.
rev karen:Yeah, that's important.
rev karen:Yeah.
rev karen:I think especially now for us to travel and to acknowledge and see, it helps me
rev karen:sometimes I'm like, oh, that's a first world problem that I'm having today
rev karen:because I've traveled to Africa or Right.
rev karen:Do you have any, like a top two or three favorite places that you've been?
rev karen:That you like could go back to over and over again.
rev karen:Probably all of 'em, I guess, but any top favorites come to mind?
rev karen:Yeah.
rev karen:I tell you, I, I'm blown away, especially by the new ones when my
rev karen:first time, for sure I can go back to South Africa over and over again.
rev karen:I can tell you, I could do that.
rev karen:I love safari.
rev karen:I love it on a private game reserve.
rev karen:I love how close we can get to the animals.
rev karen:I love that.
rev karen:many of them are habituated, and it takes 10 years for them to get used to, a human.
rev karen:South Africa for sure.
rev karen:I could go back.
rev karen:I, we just did our first official tours, new owners in Ireland with
rev karen:a Scotland add-on, and I had heard the food, as meat and potatoes.
rev karen:I've had the best meals of my life in Ireland now.
rev karen:Wow.
rev karen:So that was my night.
rev karen:Yeah.
rev karen:Blue.
rev karen:the best meal of my life Wow.
rev karen:Was in, at the SSON Moore and at a restaurant, where we stayed.
rev karen:Oh my gosh.
rev karen:Wow.
rev karen:I can't wait to go back there.
rev karen:and then the wildlife in Scotland, that just, that was post tour,
rev karen:but that was really nice.
rev karen:I would say I would've put Uganda on the list.
rev karen:So I'll just say this in this moment, I was planning a, I went there this
rev karen:year to put together a tour and recently, the president of Uganda
rev karen:signed the worst L G B T Q law on the planet recently just signed it.
rev karen:Oh gosh.
rev karen:So I'm a.
rev karen:I'm about to have a conversation with the tour, guide.
rev karen:I was really gonna change his life and his family's life by working with him.
rev karen:And I'm heartbroken.
rev karen:I don't even know how to process it, but I can't go to Uganda, right?
rev karen:I can't.
rev karen:it's, it, I could be imprisoned for 10 years and anyone that travels with me
rev karen:if they want to, could put us in jail.
rev karen:So that's really up on the planet right now.
rev karen:There's 33 countries, but there's some countries, like Egypt where
rev karen:I travel to Egypt all the time.
rev karen:Yeah, it is illegal.
rev karen:Thailand.
rev karen:So that's starting to happen, which is just mind blowing to me.
rev karen:So I would've said, you got, I would've said Uganda, but now I can't.
rev karen:No.
rev karen:Right.
rev karen:right.
rev karen:Yeah.
rev karen:Yeah.
rev karen:And so I would say Africa for sure is at the top Egypt.
rev karen:probably, in the next year I will have gone seven times.
rev karen:I really love Egypt.
rev karen:I love the mystery of it all and the mysticism and the people and all of that.

rev karen:So rise up and be that love and that sometimes is that Mama bear.
rev karen:And I know you've gotta know this, being a mother.
rev karen:It's that mama bear stand up and be that boundless love.
rev karen:it's not a weak, it's the most powerful force presence there is.
rev karen:it's a power, not a force, but that's what we came here to be.
rev karen:Yeah.
rev karen:and to know that you.
rev karen:Are the one and only ever to be masterpiece, never to be replicated,
rev karen:duplicated can never come around again, and you are so worthy of
rev karen:this love, receive that love.
rev karen:I think that's also our journey is to really embrace.
rev karen:Just how absolutely freaking magnificent we each are because we've been told
rev karen:along the way, especially usually at an early age, that we're not of worth.
rev karen:And yet life itself is so worthy.
rev karen:I would say that as well.
rev karen:Awesome.
rev karen:I don't even wanna speak after that.
