Why Healthcare AI Governance Has to Be Trauma-Informed First — Not Bolted On Later

After 10+ years as a clinician in community mental health and private practice, Nadege Petrie tested more EHR and EMR systems than she can count — and kept landing on the same conclusion: "As a clinician, I can't even use this system. Why would I want my clients to use this system?"

That frustration became a company. Nadege now builds AI governance infrastructure for healthcare — grounded in a five-checkpoint framework (review, validate, assign ownership, monitor, escalate) that has to be in place before a single line of code gets written, not added once the system is already deployed.

In this conversation, Nadege and Michelle talk about:

  • Why most health-tech systems are built compliance-first and trauma-informed never
  • What it actually felt like to move from executive (evaluating other people's products) to founder (owning every decision behind her own)
  • Why she pushes back when her engineering team wants to defer governance work — and how she keeps them accountable to the framework
  • Why "put a ticket in, IT will fix it" is the wrong answer to a structural problem
  • Her message to any woman sitting on a gap she can see clearly but hasn't acted on yet: "The gap that you see is real. You're not crazy. You're being skipped."
