What happens when people discover they have more choice than they thought?
In Part 2 of my conversation with Dr. Marcella Finnerty and Dr. Shu-Han Huang, we go deeper into how Mental Freedom® translates across cultures and what happens when women begin recognizing choices they may never have realized were available to them.
Shu-Han shares an important insight from her work with Taiwanese women. While I often teach that moving from “I have to” to “I want to” can restore a sense of freedom, “I choose to” may actually feel more empowering in some collectivistic and paternalistic cultures. That observation was so important that I incorporated it into the updated Mental Freedom curriculum.
Marcella shares what she witnessed among women in Ireland and the Middle East, including participants navigating displacement and armed conflict. For some, Mental Freedom wasn't about changing an extraordinarily difficult external reality. It was about finding the internal freedom to decide how they wanted to respond within that reality.
Together, we explore:
- Why choice can look different across cultures
- The difference between external freedom and internal freedom
- What women across cultures may have in common
- Why having choices doesn't mean those choices are easy or desirable
- The importance of agency when circumstances cannot be controlled
- How Mental Freedom builds upon Choice Theory while expanding its practical application
- The Six Principles of Mental Freedom®
- Why Mental Freedom is a continuing practice rather than something you complete
One of my favorite ideas from this conversation comes from Marcella, who describes what she observed as a “longing for agency.”
That longing isn't limited to women, one culture, or one part of the world. We all want to know that even when we can't control what happens around us, we still have some influence over what happens within us.
