Shownotes

It’s the holidays, and you know what that means on Queue Points: it’s time to talk holiday cheer … and foolishness. Jay Ray and DJ Sir Daniel revisit Patti LaBelle’s infamous 1996 performance of “This Christmas” for the National Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony, where everything that could go wrong absolutely did – no background singers, cue cards [with the lyrics] out of order, and Patti onstage begging, “Where my background singers?” while still belting for her life. The hosts dig into what actually happened behind the scenes and how this one night turned into a yearly meme and a Black camp classic folks quote every December.

From Jay Leno and Watch What Happens Live to the legendary Patti Pie era, Jay Ray and Sir Daniel also walk through other moments where Miss Patti broke the internet and reminded everyone why she’s a national treasure with an unmatched sense of humor. This episode is part love letter, part cultural autopsy, and part holiday hangout, perfect to throw on while you’re trimming the tree, wrapping gifts, or rewatching Patti ask for “the next card, honey” one more time.

Key takeaways:

  • How a mistimed entrance, wrong cue cards, and late background singers turned “This Christmas” into peak Black camp instead of a holiday standard.
  • Why the performance vanished into archives for years and then found new life as a social media holiday classic that people now rewatch every season.
  • Patti’s own reflections on the night, from joking about the disaster with Jay Leno in the 90s to later “not remembering” the moment on Watch What Happens Live.
  • How Patti’s other viral moments – the Tyra Banks cupcake segment and the Walmart Patti Pie explosion – cemented her status as a meme-able diva for multiple generations.
  • Why Jay Ray and DJ Sir Daniel see this performance as a joyful tradition and proof that even a hot mess can become a cherished cultural artifact.

Sir Daniel:

Greetings and welcome to another episode of Queue Points podcast.

Sir Daniel:

I am DJ Sir Daniel.

Jay Ray:

And my name is Jay Ray, sometimes known by my governments

Jay Ray:

as Johnnie Ray Kornegay III.

Jay Ray:

And Sir Daniel, it's the holidays, and you know what we do on the holiday?

Jay Ray:

We talk about foolishness.

Sir Daniel:

We absolutely do, and I'm surprised.

Sir Daniel:

It's good that you said holidays.

Sir Daniel:

Because this, this particular topic will make you holler because the

Sir Daniel:

subject of this episode was hollering,

Jay Ray:

yes.

Sir Daniel:

um, Jay Ray LaBelle's performance in at for the president

Sir Daniel:

in Washington, DC is as much a Christmas classic as the Charlie s.

Jay Ray:

I agree.

Sir Daniel:

It's totally as much a Christmas classic as Charlie Brown's

Sir Daniel:

Christmas in the sense that every year we look forward to the memes and, and

Sir Daniel:

there's one specific quote that we look forward to hearing every year.

Sir Daniel:

Jay Ray, what is that quote?

Jay Ray:

Where my background singers?

Sir Daniel:

But you have to be more frantic with it.

Sir Daniel:

Eyes protruding.

Jay Ray:

What?

Jay Ray:

I don't, I don't know words.

Jay Ray:

I need the cue cards.

Jay Ray:

Okay.

Jay Ray:

We need to sell to people.

Jay Ray:

What?

Jay Ray:

Ha.

Jay Ray:

Here's what we know happened.

Jay Ray:

Okay.

Jay Ray:

This is hilarious.

Jay Ray:

Um, so one, I had never known about this until social media.

Jay Ray:

I just wasn't watching CSPAN like that.

Jay Ray:

CSPAN is not a station that I tune into, and if y'all don't know if you or live

Jay Ray:

outside of the right, it's not sexy if you live outside the United States.

Jay Ray:

CSPAN is the US Station that does all of your government

Jay Ray:

related broadcasts, Senate stuff.

Jay Ray:

All of that, if it's government related and they gotta do something over at

Jay Ray:

the Capitol or whatever, it's on CSPAN.

Jay Ray:

So in 1996, so this is, uh, during the Clinton administration, he

Jay Ray:

had just been elected to his second, um, uh, term as president.

Jay Ray:

He hadn't been, uh, he hadn't gone through the inauguration yet, but, so

Jay Ray:

it's, it's 1996 and, uh, uh, they are having the tree lighting ceremony.

Jay Ray:

Uh, to, you know, get ready for the holidays.

Jay Ray:

It's what the people do.

Jay Ray:

Right.

Sir Daniel:

Good times.

Jay Ray:

good, good times.

Jay Ray:

Uh, uh, people are there, there's children, uh, uh, uh, uh, a, a a

Jay Ray:

a a plethora of people are there to see the tree lighting ceremony.

Jay Ray:

And the, the musical guest is a living legend.

Jay Ray:

It is.

Jay Ray:

The Patti LaBelle is gonna be the, the, the musical guest.

Jay Ray:

So Patti LaBelle.

Jay Ray:

So what I did not realize about this is, is, is this went bad

Jay Ray:

from like the beginning, so.

Jay Ray:

Patti LaBelle is queued to enter the stage too early, so they're

Jay Ray:

actually still in the middle of the speech kind of talking about stuff.

Jay Ray:

They're not quite introducing her yet.

Jay Ray:

So she enters the stage and then she looks, and she's, she does it

Jay Ray:

like a church, a church finger, and she's like, be right back.

Jay Ray:

Whoopsies.

Jay Ray:

Not my time yet.

Jay Ray:

That's how we start this day.

Jay Ray:

So Patty comes out too early and then it is time to play.

Jay Ray:

So there is the, of course, you know, so for, for, for, uh, government

Jay Ray:

things, they have the, the military bands, you know, that play the songs.

Jay Ray:

And of course they queue up.

Jay Ray:

And this year they are playing this Christmas, the literal

Jay Ray:

black Christmas anthem.

Jay Ray:

And this Christmas is playing.

Jay Ray:

And so this Christmas is time.

Jay Ray:

They are playing the music.

Jay Ray:

Here comes Patti LaBelle.

Jay Ray:

She starts.

Jay Ray:

And then

Sir Daniel:

She is.

Jay Ray:

she's looking, she gets through like the first verse and

Jay Ray:

then it's like, uh, this Christmas where my background singers, because

Jay Ray:

there's no background singers.

Jay Ray:

This is the band and Patty, right?

Jay Ray:

And then on top to add insult to.

Jay Ray:

Patty don't know the words.

Jay Ray:

So apparently there's a woman who has the cue cards, but apparently she dropped

Jay Ray:

the cue cards according to Pat LaBelle, and she just put 'em back in the wrong.

Jay Ray:

Everything's going wrong.

Jay Ray:

Everything's going wrong.

Jay Ray:

It's the perfect storm of bad.

Jay Ray:

So there's no background singers.

Jay Ray:

There's just Patti LaBelle on stage with a band.

Jay Ray:

Patty doesn't know the words to this Christmas, and the person

Jay Ray:

who's supposed to feed Patty the words has now gotten them out of.

Jay Ray:

Order.

Jay Ray:

So Pat Label Bell is at this point just kind of riffing

Sir Daniel:

Do her good adlibs,

Jay Ray:

doing her good This

Jay Ray:

Chris,

Sir Daniel:

at the same time.

Jay Ray:

right

Sir Daniel:

When is somebody gonna come out here help.

Jay Ray:

this Christmas, right?

Jay Ray:

So.

Jay Ray:

Patti La There's two videos that kind of talk about this.

Jay Ray:

So, uh, Patti LaBelle right after, actually, so there's a great video

Jay Ray:

of her on, on the Tonight Show.

Jay Ray:

So she's talking to Jay Leno and, and her and Jay are just cutting up.

Sir Daniel:

Yeah.

Jay Ray:

But Jay asks her like, oh, so you got to sing for the president.

Jay Ray:

I don't know that, I don't think Jay Leno knew how it went.

Jay Ray:

'cause this is the nineties, like it's not like now where news travels

Jay Ray:

instantly like this has to, unless you watching cspan, you don't know what

Jay Ray:

happened at the tree lighting ceremony.

Jay Ray:

So.

Jay Ray:

Patty proceeds to tell Jay like, yeah, listen, I did sing for the president.

Jay Ray:

It was really bad.

Jay Ray:

Like everything about this was bad.

Jay Ray:

Like none of it went well.

Jay Ray:

And she wrote, she, you know, she talked about the fact that the audience

Jay Ray:

was really gracious to her and was really just like cheering her on.

Jay Ray:

Um, but Patti LaBelle in 1996, right after this happened, this is

Jay Ray:

literally like right after is like, yeah, this performance was, was crazy.

Jay Ray:

Now.

Jay Ray:

20 years later, she was on Watch What Happens Live.

Jay Ray:

She didn't remember she, according to Patty, she didn't remember this.

Jay Ray:

Now Patty is older, so it's Po.

Jay Ray:

Patty LaBelle has done a lot of performances, so she probably

Jay Ray:

really didn't remember, but.

Jay Ray:

Patty definitely talked about it with Jay Leno on the Tonight Show right after

Jay Ray:

it happened and talked about how much of a disaster it kind of turned out to be.

Jay Ray:

But um, so there's that video and then there is, um, uh, someone, uh, did

Jay Ray:

an interview with the military, the, the band director for the military.

Jay Ray:

Uh, this is recent, this is maybe in a couple of years.

Jay Ray:

And they were like, oh yeah, I remember that day.

Jay Ray:

And, uh, so the question was like.

Jay Ray:

Well, we were background singers, right?

Jay Ray:

Like,

Sir Daniel:

All wanna

Jay Ray:

we all wanna know.

Jay Ray:

And so the band director was like, actually, we don't know.

Jay Ray:

So the, the, the background singers did come on stage like

Jay Ray:

two minutes into the song.

Jay Ray:

So they did get there.

Jay Ray:

Two minutes into the song.

Jay Ray:

So Patty's like into this, right?

Jay Ray:

But the band director said, well, sometimes what

Jay Ray:

happens is it's really cold.

Jay Ray:

They will have people in warming tents.

Jay Ray:

And he was like, what probably happened is they didn't get the

Jay Ray:

cue to get the stage on time.

Jay Ray:

And if Patty was entering and if Patti LaBelle herself was told

Jay Ray:

to go on early, we already know that that timing was like off.

Jay Ray:

So it is most likely a situation where Patty's background singers did not

Jay Ray:

get the cue to go on stage in time, therefore missing, uh, half of the

Jay Ray:

performance of of this Christmas.

Jay Ray:

The Donny Hathaway Classic, the Black Christmas anthem.

Jay Ray:

So that's kind of the really random, unfortunate history of Patti LaBelle

Jay Ray:

at the 1996 tree lining ceremony.

Sir Daniel:

You know, it must be said that sometimes the folklore

Sir Daniel:

and the the mythology are a lot more entertaining and exciting

Jay Ray:

Yeah.

Sir Daniel:

than if she had come out there and done and done a

Sir Daniel:

really good performance because.

Sir Daniel:

If she did, if it would've been just another run of the mill performance where,

Sir Daniel:

'cause it's Pat the Bell, she kills it.

Sir Daniel:

No, no.

Sir Daniel:

Big whoop.

Sir Daniel:

Years later we wouldn't have this gift.

Sir Daniel:

This is a holiday gift to us from the social media guides because

Sir Daniel:

of the social media guides.

Sir Daniel:

Because you mentioned something earlier, C-Span.

Sir Daniel:

There's a possibility that this performance wasn't even supposed to

Sir Daniel:

air, it probably didn't even air.

Sir Daniel:

And somebody, some, some messy person in archives found this and

Sir Daniel:

was like, oh, this is hilarious.

Sir Daniel:

I'm uploading this to the internet.

Sir Daniel:

And, and years later, of course, you know, generation, um.

Sir Daniel:

Z and YI found it and uploaded it, but it, it truly is a national treasure because

Sir Daniel:

Patti LaBelle is a national treasure.

Sir Daniel:

There isn't too many things that she can do wrong.

Sir Daniel:

And, um, Jay Ray, I must say, in preparing for this, um, this topic, I,

Sir Daniel:

I just started thinking about the other times that Patti LaBelle has broken

Sir Daniel:

the internet and there have been a few times that she has broken the internet.

Sir Daniel:

And it's so funny that, uh, these older artists have a lot of, a

Sir Daniel:

lot of stock and a lot of cred in these social media streets.

Sir Daniel:

Dionne Warwick is another one,

Jay Ray:

Yep.

Sir Daniel:

but we talking about Patti LaBelle right now.

Sir Daniel:

So Jay Ray, do you remember back in 2009 on the Tyra Banks Show?

Jay Ray:

Of all shows

Sir Daniel:

Tyra Banks famous, famous for her, um, America's Next Top Model,

Sir Daniel:

um, groundbreaking show, reality, reality television show and Empire.

Sir Daniel:

Um, also branched off into her own talk show.

Sir Daniel:

And you know, like most daytime talk shows, they have a cooking segment.

Sir Daniel:

Now, I don't know, was the lady, I think the lady was, um, Dr. Phil's wife.

Sir Daniel:

Was

Jay Ray:

not, no.

Jay Ray:

Uh, actually, even more interesting.

Jay Ray:

So the woman in question is Dan Snyder's wife, Dan Snyder of the

Jay Ray:

infamous Nickelodeon controversies.

Sir Daniel:

Ah, well see there you have.

Jay Ray:

is Dan Snyder's wife.

Jay Ray:

Now she is really famous for her skinny girl line.

Jay Ray:

She had a line of, has a line of wines and snacks and all of

Jay Ray:

this stuff, like her brand is.

Jay Ray:

Top notch, like so she is like a person.

Jay Ray:

Even in 2007, like the skinny girl brand was like a thing, but no.

Jay Ray:

So she's Dan Snyder's wife.

Sir Daniel:

Okay,

Jay Ray:

That says a lot, actually.

Sir Daniel:

so.

Sir Daniel:

It really does because first of all, I'm kind of wondering why do you have both of

Sir Daniel:

them at the same time during this segment?

Sir Daniel:

You know, Patty's Patty, Patty should have had this all by herself.

Sir Daniel:

But anyway, that's, you know, hi, uh, 2020 Hindsight Vision.

Sir Daniel:

Of course.

Sir Daniel:

Um, so Todd Patty, just, they're making cupcakes and these cupcakes

Sir Daniel:

have these, the film paper on them, and Patty just makes a comment.

Sir Daniel:

Because you know she's a black woman and she does, she was trying to cue

Sir Daniel:

us into the fact that child, y'all, this lady hasn't washed her hands.

Sir Daniel:

I ain't seen her wash her hands yet.

Sir Daniel:

She said, well, when you wash your hands.

Sir Daniel:

You picked up a cupcake by the paper and allegedly, apparently this, you

Sir Daniel:

know, the lady just started thinking that Patty was interested in eating

Sir Daniel:

the paper for some odd reason.

Sir Daniel:

And Patty was not amused.

Sir Daniel:

She was not amused.

Sir Daniel:

She was, she immediately went into into Philadelphia mode like.

Jay Ray:

Like, what?

Jay Ray:

What makes you think I wanna eat paper?

Jay Ray:

Boo?

Sir Daniel:

And I mean, the funny part was that Patty could not let it go.

Sir Daniel:

Patty was like, hold up, hold up, hold up.

Sir Daniel:

You think I wanna eat paper?

Sir Daniel:

And she kept looking back at the audience because at that point we all knew, Patty

Sir Daniel:

knew that that lady, Ms. Ms. Ron Snyder

Jay Ray:

I don't know what her name is.

Sir Daniel:

had Patty all the way

Jay Ray:

F up,

Sir Daniel:

And

Jay Ray:

fd

Sir Daniel:

to let be known.

Jay Ray:

And if that, and if that woman was black, they

Jay Ray:

would've known like, no, no, no.

Jay Ray:

Miss Pat, I'm not saying that you wanted to eat the paper.

Jay Ray:

I did not realize, I'm so sorry.

Jay Ray:

Like, they could have shut that thing down, like, oh no, no.

Jay Ray:

I'm sorry Miss Patty.

Jay Ray:

I didn't mean that.

Sir Daniel:

But she, she does, she did.

Sir Daniel:

She went into white lady mode and was like, oh, she's being aggressive.

Sir Daniel:

She's being aggressive over here.

Sir Daniel:

She's getting crazy.

Sir Daniel:

It was like, no, I just need you to know that I'm not trying to eat this paper

Sir Daniel:

dummy, like, whatcha talking about?

Sir Daniel:

And, and that just, and that is yet another, um, memory before

Sir Daniel:

social media that lives on.

Sir Daniel:

Now.

Sir Daniel:

It's like, and, and the kids are making tiktoks, um, uh, at reenacting it.

Sir Daniel:

And so it's just another delicious moment in time.

Sir Daniel:

But I also think we can't forget about, um, pat LaBelle's verses with

Jay Ray:

Oh yeah.

Jay Ray:

Yes.

Sir Daniel:

Not because anything weird happened, but it was just

Sir Daniel:

so, such a delightful night.

Sir Daniel:

It became a very, it was, it was full of gifts and memes.

Sir Daniel:

Like there are hundreds of gifts from that night where, you know,

Sir Daniel:

Patty's flapping her wings or, you know, pushing, pushing out her

Sir Daniel:

hands, you know, doing Pat Theisms.

Sir Daniel:

And so Patty is good for that.

Sir Daniel:

Um, one of another moment and you mentioned watch what

Sir Daniel:

Happens, live with Andy Cohen.

Sir Daniel:

Now Andy Cohen, watch what Happens.

Sir Daniel:

Live famously applies their guests with liquor and I'm pretty certain

Sir Daniel:

that Patty was not immune to having

Jay Ray:

I'm sure she was not.

Sir Daniel:

that night and som.

Sir Daniel:

Luther Vand Draw sent during that interview.

Sir Daniel:

And of course, social media ran with that story like wildfire and poor Patty

Sir Daniel:

was under attack even to the point where in, in the Luther documentary,

Sir Daniel:

um, they mentioned the moment.

Sir Daniel:

And it kind of put a, a, a dark cloud over the wonderful relationship that

Sir Daniel:

we know that Patty and Luther had, but her, but Luther's friends were not

Sir Daniel:

having it, and they really, really, really were upset about that moment.

Sir Daniel:

So, yeah.

Sir Daniel:

But onto, but I think this is a moment that will rectify everything that

Sir Daniel:

will just cleanse the palette of that.

Sir Daniel:

And Patty's not even in this moment.

Jay Ray:

Mm-hmm.

Sir Daniel:

It's not her, but Jay Ray, it was her pie.

Jay Ray:

Oh, I forgot about the pat pie, which are still on sale y'all.

Jay Ray:

Y'all can still go buy Patti LaBelle Pie.

Sir Daniel:

Lemme tell you something, this Walmart sensation, the patty

Sir Daniel:

pie, I can only, there's like a handful of moments where a food

Sir Daniel:

item takes the world by storm.

Sir Daniel:

Remember, right before the pandemic it was the Popeye's chicken

Jay Ray:

Ooh, the Popeyes chicken sandwich had the people around salivating.

Sir Daniel:

Y'all, y'all acted a fool over over those Popeye's

Jay Ray:

sandwich was good though.

Sir Daniel:

It was good.

Sir Daniel:

It was good.

Sir Daniel:

I did have my fair share.

Sir Daniel:

We, but going back to the Patti Pie.

Sir Daniel:

The Patti Pie was this phenomenon and a unknown singer,

Sir Daniel:

hairdresser stylist made a video.

Sir Daniel:

You know, this is the time everybody makes videos and people, and was

Sir Daniel:

giving his reaction to the Patti LaBelle Pie and James Chanel

Sir Daniel:

Wright was singing his face off.

Jay Ray:

my God.

Sir Daniel:

Singing his face off about this Patti Pie.

Sir Daniel:

And that led him to get, having a whole career or even

Sir Daniel:

becoming more known as a singer.

Sir Daniel:

'cause I'm, he was already known as a singer in different circles.

Sir Daniel:

But now James, um, cha Wright is a, has a name of his own because of that moment,

Sir Daniel:

you know, he sings background with Tamar.

Sir Daniel:

Um, and, and does his own thing, you know, became a, an internet sensation

Sir Daniel:

because of the Patti LaBelle pie.

Sir Daniel:

So, you know, miss Patty, we love you.

Sir Daniel:

We thank you for this, this wonderful holiday gift.

Sir Daniel:

There are, Jay Ray, there are holiday cards, Christmas cards that

Sir Daniel:

people have made with, um, with that iconic silhouette of her hands out.

Sir Daniel:

So where are my background singers?

Sir Daniel:

That's how, that's how iconic that moment is.

Jay Ray:

It is, um, I'm grateful for it.

Jay Ray:

Like it is something that gets a chance.

Jay Ray:

We get a chance to laugh every single year.

Jay Ray:

Um, and it's easy to laugh at this 'cause one, Patti LaBelle

Jay Ray:

has a wonderful sense of humor.

Jay Ray:

We, if it's one thing you know about Patti LaBelle's, when she

Jay Ray:

show up somewhere, she going cut up.

Jay Ray:

'cause that's just, she loves to cut up so.

Jay Ray:

Seeing her in this moment and knowing that Patti LaBelle, if them, them cue

Jay Ray:

cards was where they needed to be and if them background singers was there,

Jay Ray:

would've embodied this Christmas.

Jay Ray:

Like, you know, what Patti was going to give, like she would've

Jay Ray:

gave it if she had, if everything was in place for her to give it.

Jay Ray:

So, I agree with you, sir. Daniel, I think this is a beautiful moment, um,

Jay Ray:

to, to reminisce on, but we did wanna shed some light on it and I do wanna

Jay Ray:

correct myself before this show ends.

Jay Ray:

The woman, Dan Sni.

Jay Ray:

Dan Schneider's wife.

Jay Ray:

Her name is Lisa Lillian.

Jay Ray:

Her brand is called Hungry Girl.

Jay Ray:

Not Skinny Girl.

Jay Ray:

Skinny

Sir Daniel:

Because Skinny Girl was best, was that other chick

Sir Daniel:

from Real Housewives in New York?

Jay Ray:

Oh,

Sir Daniel:

Yeah, that's

Jay Ray:

Um, but yes, hungry Girl is, uh, Lisa Lillian.

Jay Ray:

So, um, but yeah, no, I agree with you Sir. Daniel.

Jay Ray:

Uh, uh, Patty is a national treasure and this is a fun moment

Jay Ray:

and we now have a new tradition.

Sir Daniel:

we certainly do.

Sir Daniel:

If I say cue cards or backup singers, you know exactly what to do.

Jay Ray:

Right.

Jay Ray:

I dunno the words.
