The 1960s and 1970s are often thought of as the era of activist 'fight songs' that became the anthems of resistance and change in the United States. As rights begin to erode before our very eyes and the roar of intolerance becomes more pervasive in the so-called land of the free, on this episode of Outspoken, Joy Silver welcomes songwriter Steven Skeels to talk about creating these important fight songs in the modern era. He's recently released a new song It's My Body which may well become the anthem of Planned Parenthood following SCOTUS' repeal of Roe v. Wade. He shares his journey, inspired and enlightened by his progressive pro-equality mother and some of the other causes that have brought his music to life including Black Lives Matter.
