In the end, despite all of these obstacles, whether or not you have self-discipline is up to you. This is in a literal sense - the placebo effect has shown that however much you believe you have, that's what you'll have. This is empowering and freeing because it means there is nothing between you and what you want - besides you. It's up to you. This is actually ultimate freedom, not restriction, as self-discipline is sometimes framed. Take it as a challenge to be overcome.
