Shownotes

In the Netflix series "The Fall of the House of Usher," there's a monologue that delves deep into the dark heart of marketing's power over public perception. It's a chilling reminder of how easily we can be swayed, manipulated, and controlled by the relentless barrage of advertising, branding, and propaganda that saturates our everyday lives. "When life hands you lemons, make lemonade?"

What we consume, where we put our money is deeply personal and this monologue made me do a double take and really begin to think about the companies and the motives behind the marketing - so I just wanted to share it with you to - because for some reason I can’t shake it.

We all know that is used to encourage

optimism and a positive can-do attitude

6

But I recently heard a monologue

on this subject that I just

8

Manipulated and controlled by their

relentless barrage of advertising,

22

:

When life hands you lemons make lemonade.

23

:

The monologue happens in the

middle of the show's third episode

24

:

and belongs to the stories.

25

:

Narrator Roderick, usher.

26

:

Roderick launches into a long

and winding description of why

27

:

when life hands you lemons make

lemonade is far too simplistic.

28

:

Rodrick answers that length.

29

:

When life hands you lemons make lemonade.

30

:

No.

31

:

First you roll out a multimedia

campaign to convince people.

32

:

Lemons are incredibly

scarce, which only works.

33

:

If you stockpile, lemons.

34

:

Control the supply.

35

:

Then immediate blitz lemon is

the only way to say I love you.

36

:

The must have accessory for

engagements or anniversaries.

37

:

Roses are out.

38

:

Lemons are in.

39

:

Billboards that say she won't have

sex with you unless you've got lemons.

40

:

You cut de beers in on it.

41

:

Limited edition lemon bracelets,

yellow diamonds called lemon drops.

42

:

You get apple to call

their new operating system.

43

:

O S Lee Mon a little accent over the O.

44

:

You charge 40% more for organic lemons,

50% more for conflict free lemons.

45

:

You pack the Capitol with lemon

lobbyists, you get a Kardashians to

46

:

suck a lemon wedge and leaked sex tape.

47

:

Timothy shallow may where's

lemon shoes at cans.

48

:

Get a hashtag campaign, something

isn't cool or tight or awesome.

49

:

No, it's the Lennon's.

50

:

Did you see that movie?

51

:

Did you see that concert?

52

:

It was effing lemon.

53

:

Billie Eilish.

54

:

Oh my God.

55

:

Hashtag Lennon.

56

:

You get Dr.

57

:

Oz to recommend four lemons a

day, and a lemon suppository

58

:

supplement to get rid of toxins.

59

:

Cause there's nothing scarier than toxins.

60

:

Then you patent the seeds.

61

:

You write a line of genetic code that

makes the lemons look just a little

62

:

more like tits, you get a gene patent

for the tit lemon DNA sequence, you

63

:

cross pollinate, you get those seeds

circulating in the wild, and then you Sue

64

:

the farmers for copyright infringement.

65

:

When that genetic code

shows up on their land.

66

:

Sit back rake in the millions.

67

:

And then when you're done, when

you've sold your Len Pyre for a few

68

:

billion dollars then, and only then.

69

:

You make some fucking lemonade.

70

:

Now.

71

:

There's a lot wrong with this.

72

:

Monologue roses are

always in the Kardashians.

73

:

Sex tape is so old.

74

:

It can legally purchase alcohol

hashtags are so off-brand,

75

:

especially for Billie Eilish and Dr.

76

:

Oz, his credibility is

in data, but you get it.

77

:

The monologue delivers a satirical take

on modern marketing and consumer culture.

78

:

And I haven't been able

to get it out of my head.

79

:

I've thought about it over and over.

80

:

And each time they get a little

bit more depressed by how

81

:

the world and consumers are.

82

:

So captivated by trends.

83

:

How marketing can shape societal values.

84

:

As scraps from the loft

writer puts it, quote.

85

:

It's a powerful commentary on the lengths

to which individuals and corporations

86

:

will go to manufacture desire.

87

:

Manipulate markets.

88

:

And commodify every aspect of human life,

including emotions and relationships

89

:

and the pursuit of wealth and power.

90

:

Unquote.

91

:

What we consume, where we put our money

is deeply personal, and this monologue

92

:

made me do a double-take and really

begin to think about the companies

93

:

and the motives behind the marketing.

94

:

So because I can't get it out of my head.

95

:

I just wanted to share it with you.

96

:

Cause I just can't shake it.

97

:

Okay.

98

:

Onto the drink of the week,

which of course is going to be

99

:

a lemon cocktail of some sort.

100

:

One of my favorite lemon

liquorice is Lehman cello.

101

:

So this week we are indulging

in a Lehman cello martini.

102

:

Here's what you're going to need.

103

:

One and a half ounces or three

tablespoons of lemon cello, one ounce

104

:

or two tablespoons vodka, half an

ounce, one tablespoon of fresh lemon

105

:

juice, a half an ounce, one tablespoon

of simple syrup, which honestly,

106

:

I don't think you need as Lehman.

107

:

Cello is actually pretty sweet already,

but I'm going to leave that up to you.

108

:

What you're going to do is add the

lemon cello vodka, lemon juice, and

109

:

simple syrup to a cocktail shaker.

110

:

Fill with ice and shake

structure trick until cold.

111

:

And then strain that into a martini

glass and garnish with a lemon wedge.

112

:

All right, friends.

113

:

That's all for this week.
