Brendan:What Type of Nutrients Can Affect Sustainable Agriculture?
Brendan:Well, nutrients are essential for plant growth and development and
Brendan:sustainable agricultural practices rely on healthy soil in order
Brendan:to produce the abundant crops.
Brendan:There are many different nutrients that plants need, including nitrogen,
Brendan:phosphorus, potassium, calcium, magnesium, sulfur, iron, manganese,
Brendan:zinc, and of course, boron.
Brendan:Each of these nutrients is absorbed by the plant through
Brendan:various pathways in the soil.
Brendan:Nitrogen is an important nutrient for crop production because it increases yields
Brendan:and also helps prevent plant diseases.
Brendan:Most crops require a moderate amount of nitrogen to grow well,
Brendan:but too much or too little can be detrimental to the health of the plant.
Brendan:Phosphorus is another crucial nutrient for plants as it's necessary for maintaining
Brendan:profitable crop and livestock production.
Brendan:It also enhances the biological productivity of surface water.
Brendan:As for boron, it helps regulate water retention, germination,
Brendan:and seed production in plants.
Brendan:It also plays a vital role in disease resistance and pest control making it a
Brendan:key component of sustainable agriculture.
Brendan:Boron also helps to balance sugar and starch, enabling proper cell
Brendan:wall formation and seed reproduction.
Brendan:It directly impacts the seed and fruit structure allowing
Brendan:for a higher agricultural yield.
Brendan:Boron requirements and tolerance to boron supply vary significantly between plants.
Brendan:Crops with high boron demand include corn, cotton, soybeans, alfalfa and cannula.
Brendan:What About Deficiency in Soil and How Does that Affect Crop Yields and Nutrition?
Brendan:A deficiency in boron has impacted the yield of 132 crops in at least 80
Brendan:countries over the last few decades.
Brendan:According to the research, an adequate boron supply reduces the occurrence
Brendan:of empty grains and increases yields by up to five and a half percent in
Brendan:barley, multiplies spike length and plant pigment content, reduces the
Brendan:likelihood of sterility in wheat and enhances tomato quality and shelf life.
Brendan:Boron also improves yield in various crops and growing environments.
Brendan:A study in Brazil found that adding one kilogram of boron per hectare to seed
Brendan:cotton led to an increase in yield of 8%.
Brendan:Another study in Vietnam found that applying one and a half kilograms
Brendan:of boron per hectare increased the rice grain yields by 10%.
Brendan:And in China, a study from 2011 showed that using water-soluble boron fertilizer,
Brendan:led to an increase in corn yields of 7.9%.
Brendan:The University of Connecticut in 2020 investigated the effect of
Brendan:its boron-enriched SOP(sulfate of potash fertilizer) on the yield
Brendan:and growth of broccoli and tomato.
Brendan:These vegetables were chosen because they both need board and potassium.
Brendan:Broccoli has properties similar to other cruciferous crops,
Brendan:such as cauliflower and cabbage.
Brendan:In the USA, 92% of broccoli and 90% of tomatoes are grown in California.
Brendan:An experiment with American Pacific Borates or 5E Advanced

Brendan:When the boron-enriched SOP was used, broccoli yields more than doubled but
Brendan:the tomato results were less clear.
Brendan:Still, it suggests a linear relationship between the boron

Brendan:It was also observed that there's a narrow line between boron deficiency
Brendan:and toxicity, with one examination indicating that the optimal range for
Brendan:most species is 0.5 to five milligrams per kilogram of hot water extractable boron.
Brendan:Boron fertilization rates are typically 0.25 to three kilograms
Brendan:per hectare, as a range.
Brendan:Boron is also a growing component of the fertilizer market.
Brendan:In 2019 the global fertilizer market was worth $156 billion, indicating
Brendan:the boron products account for a very small portion of the market.
Brendan:However, researchers believe that the market will grow at a compound annual
Brendan:growth rate of up to 12% by 2025 with a significant increase in borate
Brendan:consumption in the agricultural sector.
Brendan:Boron is used as a fertilizer.
Brendan:Liquid fertilizers are a common type of agricultural fertilizer and are
Brendan:typically made up of about 10% boron with application rates, varying depending
Brendan:on soil conditions and other factors.
Brendan:Some estimates suggest that boron demands in agriculture accounts
Brendan:around 15% of total demand with annual growth rates ranging from 4 to 12%.
Brendan:So it's pretty clear that the role of boron in sustainable agriculture
Brendan:is to help improve soil health and fertility and increase crop yields.
Brendan:It's clearly a valuable nutrient for sustainably increasing food production.
