Shownotes

In this episode of the Daily Bible Podcast, we dive into the challenges of sleepless nights exacerbated by time changes and briefly discuss former President Trump's comments on daylight savings time. The hosts then move on to church-related updates, highlighting the exciting upcoming baptisms at the church using a portable jacuzzi, and the importance of family participation in these faith events. The conversation also touches on personal and corporate reflections of God's faithfulness. This theme is explored in the context of the upcoming Bible reading from Numbers 33-34, discussing Israel's historic journey and God's organized allocation of the Promised Land. Listeners are encouraged to document God's faithfulness in their lives as a spiritual practice. Additional discussions include the practicality of maintaining an organized workspace for effective ministry work.

PJ:

Hey everybody, welcome back to another edition of the daily Bible podcast.

2

:

I'm tired.

3

:

Are you?

4

:

I got an hour or less of sleep, even

though I tried to go to bed early.

5

:

I didn't go to bed early cause

my body wasn't ready yet.

6

:

You were like, no, I'm going to do it.

7

:

So yeah, my body was like,

I'm not going to bed.

8

:

I don't care what you do.

9

:

It's not time yet.

10

:

Not time.

11

:

So I'm clearly not awake and my

voice isn't what it's supposed to be.

12

:

So this is all because of the time change.

13

:

Yeah.

14

:

But wasn't Trump supposed to save us

from that wasn't like one of his campaign

15

:

promises to you Might have been they also

they asked about it recently and he said

16

:

i'll tell you why we're not doing this And

he said, it's because it's 50, 50, half

17

:

the people want daylight savings time.

18

:

The other one, the standard to

keep it on that one all year long.

19

:

And so he says, since people

can't agree on it, it's I'm just

20

:

going to, I'll let it work it out.

21

:

Okay.

22

:

Self out.

23

:

Okay.

24

:

But it's like when we're going to

get ice cream as a family, if we're

25

:

going to get like a gallon of ice

cream to share as a family, my kids

26

:

are going to have different opinions

on which ice cream flavor they want.

27

:

But at the end of the day,

they just want ice cream.

28

:

That's true.

29

:

And so it doesn't matter if I get a

flavor that it wasn't top of the list for

30

:

somebody, if they're going to get over it,

they're going to still want the ice cream.

31

:

He the way he explained it, he

says, some people don't want to

32

:

send their kids to school when

it's dark, that matters to them.

33

:

And I guess I understand that.

34

:

I don't want to send my kids to the

bus stop when it's still dark outside.

35

:

So he's talking about different

factions of people that have interests.

36

:

It's valid interest for why

they don't want to have this

37

:

particular time versus that time.

38

:

But 98 percent of his

constituency is homeschooled.

39

:

That's not true.

40

:

That's not true.

41

:

If that were the case,

I think it'd be easier.

42

:

Yeah.

43

:

That's fair.

44

:

Yeah.

45

:

No, it is spring forward.

46

:

So hopefully you made it to church

on time or else you just walked in

47

:

and it was the middle of the sermon.

48

:

We're almost finished already.

49

:

Yeah.

50

:

But Hey, next week we got

baptisms at the church.

51

:

Is it next week?

52

:

It's next Sunday.

53

:

We were unclear about

that at MUN's Bible study.

54

:

We were unsure.

55

:

No, we were clear.

56

:

It just was unclear in its communication.

57

:

Yeah, no, it is.

58

:

It's next week and we're going to

be doing it onsite at the church,

59

:

which is going to be exciting.

60

:

Our first onsite baptisms.

61

:

Wow.

62

:

And we got are we doing sprinkling?

63

:

I'm doing air scare quotes here

that you can't see, but we got

64

:

a baptismal baptism which is a.

65

:

It's a portable jacuzzi

as I understand it.

66

:

Portable jacuzzi.

67

:

You're going to be sitting in there.

68

:

It'll get the job done.

69

:

You're gonna crack open a cold brew

waiting for us as we prepare it again.

70

:

I'm actually an appreci the

whole message from the jacuzzi

71

:

while you guys are all inside.

72

:

Dude, that would be a killer illustration

if you could find a way to weave it in.

73

:

Yeah.

74

:

Don't think I can.

75

:

Yeah, I don't think so.

76

:

You just got to think about it

long enough, but it will be fun.

77

:

We have four people as of now getting

baptized, which is gonna be awesome.

78

:

And we have yeah, it's

just gonna be a great time.

79

:

We're gonna have pizza there.

80

:

And so we're asking you to stay after

service, which I know is going to be a

81

:

little bit different and maybe a little

bit It's inconvenient, but it's worth it

82

:

because of what baptisms are all about.

83

:

This is celebration and

this is a family event.

84

:

And that's why I'm so excited about

bringing it on campus because all of us

85

:

are going to get to participate in this.

86

:

And so we will have food there.

87

:

We'll have pizza to feed you.

88

:

And if you've got kids to feed your

kids and we're going to hear four

89

:

people at least give their testimony

and talk about how God has saved them.

90

:

And we are then going to watch them take

that important step of obedience of.

91

:

being metaphorically buried

with Christ through baptism

92

:

and raised to newness of life.

93

:

And so it's going to be

an awesome time together.

94

:

So just a quick summation here.

95

:

We always end at 11 20 AM.

96

:

We always end by that time every Sunday.

97

:

So from 1120 to 1140, we're going

to ask you to get your kids:

98

:

We're going to do the baptismal service.

99

:

I guess we'll call it that.

100

:

And then from 1142 at the

latest, we're thinking:

101

:

That's going to be the time

that we're doing our thing.

102

:

So you could be chomping on pizza as

people are sharing their testimony,

103

:

watching the action unfold.

104

:

We would love to have all of you there.

105

:

Yeah.

106

:

Yeah.

107

:

And get rowdy afterwards.

108

:

When somebody comes up out of the

water, it's a time to celebrate.

109

:

Yeah.

110

:

It's time to cheer.

111

:

It's splash pastor PJ.

112

:

If you're near the tank

I'll already wash him.

113

:

I'll already be in the water.

114

:

So he would love it.

115

:

No, it should be awesome.

116

:

It should be a great time.

117

:

Hey, let's jump into our DBR for today.

118

:

Numbers 33 through 34.

119

:

I would say it in Spanish, but I don't

know how to say 33 and 34 in Spanish.

120

:

So

121

:

look at you, man.

122

:

I took Spanish for several

years in high school.

123

:

Did you?

124

:

I was telling someone the other

day, the only reason I gave it up is

125

:

'cause someone in my family's what

are you doing, ? What are you saying?

126

:

I said, Spanish is,

that's not Spanish, bro.

127

:

I don't know what they're teaching

you in that school of yours.

128

:

That's not Spanish.

129

:

I was so discouraged.

130

:

I'm like, we're going to use it again now.

131

:

And I never did until now.

132

:

And it just came in handy.

133

:

If somebody is listening to us that

doesn't know English and they were like,

134

:

what chapters and numbers are we in?

135

:

I don't know.

136

:

And then you busted out

the Spanish for 33 and 34.

137

:

Can I do anything else with it?

138

:

Nope.

139

:

They're at least there.

140

:

They're, they can at least get

to know a new metal because

141

:

numbers no, it's not numbers.

142

:

Numeros.

143

:

Numeros.

144

:

Numeros.

145

:

Numbers.

146

:

Yeah.

147

:

Numeros.

148

:

Oh, man, I at least have an excuse.

149

:

That's true.

150

:

No, you don't, you should

be able to speak German.

151

:

Okay.

152

:

Don't go shame.

153

:

All right.

154

:

Numbers 33.

155

:

This chapter is the the travel itinerary

for Israel from Egypt through the

156

:

wilderness wanderings up into the point

of being ready to enter the promised land.

157

:

I've mentioned it a couple of times.

158

:

It's a great resource.

159

:

The Zondervan international

Bible backgrounds commentary.

160

:

The section on this

passage has a great map.

161

:

Where they actually will lay out to

you at least three different possible

162

:

routes that they could have gone.

163

:

And this just goes to show that,

and we've talked about this before,

164

:

there's a difference in the precision.

165

:

They didn't have Google maps.

166

:

They didn't have Apple maps probably

would have given about the same

167

:

precision as we get here in the.

168

:

But there's a few different suggestions,

any of them are possible based on the

169

:

way the text describes this journey.

170

:

But if you want a visual, that's

a great option for you to go

171

:

and find that visual there.

172

:

But there, this is going through,

and this is another one of those

173

:

that could get laborious to read.

174

:

Cause you're reading about them

going from this town to this town.

175

:

But as a reminder of us, number one

of the historicity of the event, the

176

:

authors, Moses is trying to tell us,

look, this happened and here's where

177

:

we were and there's history here.

178

:

We've, we talked about this

recently with our church.

179

:

We said, Hey who's keeping a historical

account of what's going on with our church

180

:

because it matters where we've been.

181

:

And and the stops along the route.

182

:

And so we've talked about that.

183

:

In fact, in our new office,

we've got a long hallway.

184

:

And so we talked about even putting

like a timeline up on that and

185

:

plotting some things out there

just to see God's faithfulness.

186

:

And so this is number one.

187

:

And number two, it's a reminder of God's

faithfulness to sustain the people all

188

:

throughout the wilderness wanderings

to bring them to the point that they're

189

:

almost ready to enter the promised land.

190

:

What a good thing for you to take

note of this for your own family

191

:

sake, for your sake, at least

documenting the faithfulness of God.

192

:

We've talked about this before,

and I guess I've probably old hat

193

:

at this point when I continue to

bring up the idea of journaling.

194

:

A lot of our forefathers

of the faith did this.

195

:

This was part of their spiritual

practice and they did it with a purpose.

196

:

Wasn't just to glorify

their day to day existence.

197

:

It was really a way to say, man,

this is what God has done for us.

198

:

This is how God has blessed me.

199

:

This is what God is doing in me right now.

200

:

And I love that.

201

:

I love the idea.

202

:

And I've been doing this for years.

203

:

It was valuable.

204

:

Actually, most recently I was

looking through some stuff and I

205

:

utilized it for a men's Bible study.

206

:

Cause I'm like, this is a,

this is helpful to my point.

207

:

And I was able to draw from something.

208

:

I actually, I said 10 years.

209

:

It was actually, I don't know,

closer to 15 or 18 years ago.

210

:

Anyway, long story short, it's useful.

211

:

You'll find it in scripture.

212

:

And I think that tells me that you should

consider doing it for yourself too.

213

:

Yeah.

214

:

That's, I've got, you guys can't

tell until we start videoing this

215

:

podcast, but I'm just showing Pastor

Rod the map from the Zonervan.

216

:

Yeah.

217

:

That's a great map.

218

:

I looked it up on Logos to

see if anybody wanted to.

219

:

ever asked me if I would be

willing it by themselves.

220

:

The Old Testament bible

background commentary is only 474.

221

:

99.

222

:

It goes on sale though.

223

:

So I, in fact, accordance bible software,

which is another option out there for you.

224

:

That is good as an option, but this is

better than well not agree or disagree.

225

:

Their each have SHA the.

226

:

Mud, anyways, it was just on

sale recently for them for the

227

:

whole thing, Old Testament and

New Testament, I think for 2.

228

:

99 and they have payment plans too,

which is important to remember.

229

:

Log us this too.

230

:

If you can't bite off something

all at once, they do have payment

231

:

plans that you can get on.

232

:

They're not charging interest on those

payment plans and you can purchase and

233

:

use right away some of these resources

and materials for yourself that way.

234

:

That's right.

235

:

Anyways, chapter 33 ends with instructions

on driving out the inhabitants of the

236

:

promised land and how to divide the land

up when they get there tribe by tribe.

237

:

And so they're really getting ready.

238

:

This is prep time.

239

:

It's about to be go time.

240

:

This is prep time for them to

get ready to take the possession

241

:

that God had laid out for them.

242

:

So notice they take stock of

their people they're identifying

243

:

chiefs, they're marking they're

marking boundaries for the land.

244

:

I find it so comforting and so helpful to

know that God is not a God of accidentals.

245

:

He's not just saying, Hey,

I want you to go do this.

246

:

He's, I don't know.

247

:

It's.

248

:

It's anthropomorphic to say this, but he's

an organizing he's an intentional God.

249

:

And of course, these are all things

that we would use to describe a person.

250

:

God is a person, but he's not like

us in that he doesn't have parts.

251

:

He doesn't have a part of him that's

this and a part of him that's that

252

:

we call this divine simplicity.

253

:

He's got attributes and part of his

attributes tell us a little bit about him.

254

:

And part of his attributes

declare that he's organized.

255

:

He's not haphazard.

256

:

He's not a God who's here.

257

:

And then there we might

call this faithfulness.

258

:

He's, he means what he says.

259

:

He says what he means.

260

:

He fulfills and follows

through on what he says.

261

:

And this tells us something

of what we should be.

262

:

We're not going to be just like him,

obviously he's God, but we should

263

:

aspire to be like him, at least in

the quality that we're organized.

264

:

We're intentional.

265

:

We're doing what we say we should do.

266

:

And we're doing it in an

organized, non haphazard way.

267

:

It's a great way to live your life.

268

:

This is how God operates.

269

:

Yeah.

270

:

That's why when we moved into the

new office, I immediately was like,

271

:

I got to get my office set up.

272

:

I can't think in chaos.

273

:

That's one way to put it.

274

:

Yeah.

275

:

And you immediately switched it.

276

:

You know what?

277

:

This isn't the way I like it.

278

:

I'm going to switch this up.

279

:

I built a desk.

280

:

And before I moved to anything

else, I had the desk built.

281

:

And then after I moved everything

else in, I set up my office

282

:

the way it was going to be.

283

:

Okay.

284

:

Hey, on that note, the people are

demanding to know when they can drop by.

285

:

They can come by anytime.

286

:

We haven't announced our official open

house yet because we've got to plan that.

287

:

I think we're doing that on Tuesday.

288

:

We've got that on our agenda as a

staff to talk through and get that on

289

:

and milk and all sorts of fun stuff.

290

:

Yep.

291

:

Yep.

292

:

But you're welcome to come by anytime.

293

:

We've had some people drop

by and it's been great.

294

:

It's been fun to see my

window looks out the front.

295

:

So I see when anybody shows up here,

which is both a blessing and a curse.

296

:

Cause sometimes I'm studying

and I'm looking up and go,

297

:

somebody's coming in here.

298

:

They, I want to say hi.

299

:

And I try to get out and say, I, if

I can if I don't just know that I'm

300

:

either praying or deep in message prep.

301

:

And otherwise I'll do my best to get

out and say, Hey, while we're talking

302

:

about it, if anyone wants to build

my desk, I'm not going to stop you.

303

:

Yes.

304

:

If you want to do that would actually,

honestly, knowing pastor Rod, that

305

:

would be a huge blessing to him.

306

:

I would love you to build my desk.

307

:

If you want to do this.

308

:

It's we'll see today's Sunday.

309

:

I will certainly not have made

it yet because I've got stuff

310

:

today That's got to get done.

311

:

So yeah, I won't have any

if you want to do that.

312

:

You want to build my desk I'd be happy

to let you do that yeah, in fact it would

313

:

be a blessing to me too because it gives

me a little bit of like I Convulse a

314

:

little bit every time I walk by and it

just sees the office in a state of just

315

:

I will get to it I know you will I will.

316

:

If someone doesn't do it

for me, I'll get to it.

317

:

I just thought about, I want to go

to the fiber and see if someone could

318

:

come by and just make it for me, but I

don't want to pay five bucks for it and

319

:

then have someone build it all broken

and like sticking out the wrong way.

320

:

But I, okay, so here's the

thinking guys, let me just tell

321

:

you why my office is still messy.

322

:

I was thinking stuff has to get done.

323

:

And that has to get done, but that's not

the most important thing to get done.

324

:

So I willingly neglected it knowing that

there were other things that required

325

:

more immediate attention, like men's Bible

study and coming up soon on Wednesday,

326

:

the sermon for the true North students.

327

:

So there's other things that are

more important to me right now.

328

:

I find that when my offices.

329

:

Is in a state of disarray.

330

:

My head is in a state of disarray.

331

:

I need order to be able to

think well about things.

332

:

And that's just different people, right?

333

:

Yeah.

334

:

Different.

335

:

Ordinarily, I would agree

with you ordinarily.

336

:

That's the way I would operate.

337

:

But special circumstances you're

prepping for men's Bible study.

338

:

You've got yeah.

339

:

You've got two messages

prepping for moving is.

340

:

Hectic in and of itself.

341

:

So yeah, no fun.

342

:

Chapter 34 we should get there speaking

of continues order and boundaries.

343

:

Here we have God's not tribal allotments,

but his breaking up of this is the

344

:

boundaries of all of the promised land.

345

:

And so if you go to the ESV

study Bible has a great map.

346

:

Now, speaking of maps, the ESV

study Bible has a great map on that.

347

:

It's not going to cost you 400 bucks.

348

:

The ESV study Bible far

more affordable than that.

349

:

And it shows you the map.

350

:

It shows you how this looked

or how it was intended to look.

351

:

And one of the things that you should

notice right away, if you take this

352

:

outline from numbers 34, one through

15, the map that's connected to that

353

:

passage, and you look at modern day

Israel, you're going to look at this

354

:

and say, this doesn't look anything.

355

:

There's a semblance, but

it looks a lot different.

356

:

And so it's worth note that God's

original plan for the promised

357

:

land was much broader than what the

occupation ends up actually being.

358

:

What's today part of what is

north of is Lebanon, right?

359

:

North of the people of

Israel there today, I think.

360

:

They would have had a lot

of that territory as well.

361

:

So as you look at that map, just

note that this is not what the

362

:

ultimate settling ends up being.

363

:

Why?

364

:

Because of Israel's disobedience,

because the people don't go in and drive

365

:

everybody out of the promised land.

366

:

So what they ended up settling in is a

settling for a smaller territory than

367

:

God originally had promised to give them.

368

:

Yeah, chapters verses 16 then

through 29, the tribal chiefs.

369

:

Again, the order that God has instilled

here in the people knowing as they

370

:

enter the promised land, they're going

to need somebody to represent them.

371

:

They're going to need some

leadership in each individual tribe.

372

:

And so one man's taken from each tribe

and tasked with helping to divide the land

373

:

amongst the people and be an administrator

there as they get into the promised land

374

:

and help sort through all these details.

375

:

I wonder if any of the tribes

complained about their allotment.

376

:

I don't want this part.

377

:

I'm sure they did.

378

:

Why did I get this part?

379

:

And yet this is what God gave them.

380

:

Yeah.

381

:

There's something about the

providential hand of God giving us

382

:

the, or, as some people call it, like

a poker game, he's, these are the,

383

:

this is the hand you've been dealt.

384

:

And for a lot of us, we can look

around and look at our neighbors and

385

:

look at other friends at church and

say, man, they just, they seem to

386

:

get all the perks, all the benefits.

387

:

I work just as hard or even harder.

388

:

And yet they have the better marriage.

389

:

They have the better family.

390

:

They have the cooler car, whatever it is.

391

:

Recognize this is what God

has allotted to you and take.

392

:

Take joy in the privilege

that he's granted you.

393

:

You're a child of the king and what he's

given you is not something you deserve.

394

:

It's something that he has

graciously provided you with.

395

:

Even if you don't like it, I think

you ought to learn to like it

396

:

and thank God for what you have.

397

:

Yeah.

398

:

Yeah.

399

:

Yeah.

400

:

And there's yeah, no, that's great, man.

401

:

That's super helpful.

402

:

Yeah.

403

:

I had a thought that escaped me.

404

:

So clearly God did not

want me to bring it up.

405

:

So there it is.

406

:

Got edited.

407

:

Yeah.

408

:

Oh no, that's what it is.

409

:

Nevermind.

410

:

Sorry.

411

:

It came to me.

412

:

I was thinking, cause you said, I

wonder if some people grumbled about it.

413

:

I wonder what the Hebrew is for you get

what you get and you don't throw a fit.

414

:

I'm sure some mom knows it if he's

like, Oh, I do it all the time.

415

:

Yeah.

416

:

Maybe they were the Israeli ladies

were the first ones to start saying

417

:

it probably started saying it.

418

:

Yeah.

419

:

Anyways, I'm sure about that gutturals.

420

:

Let's let's pray and then we'll

be done with the subs in God.

421

:

We are such a good reminder there

towards the end that we need to

422

:

be content and grateful with the

things that you've given to us.

423

:

The blessings that we

have are gifts of you.

424

:

Every good and perfect gift comes from you

and it's not ours to say I think I need

425

:

to have that gift instead of this gift or

that position instead of this possession.

426

:

We want to be good stewards of what

you have given to us and make good

427

:

use of the resources that we have.

428

:

And so help us to be faithful with

that and efficient and effective and

429

:

fruitful with those things as well.

430

:

We pray in Jesus name.

431

:

Amen.
