Shownotes

Have you ever caught yourself thinking...

"I'm not good enough."

"I always mess things up."

"Why can't I get anything right?"

What if those thoughts aren't actually yours?

In this week's Tammy's Takes, Tammy builds on a powerful insight from her conversation with transformational guide Isabelle Chiara and explores how the voices we heard growing up often become the voice we hear inside our own heads.

If you grew up in dysfunction, criticism, emotional neglect, or conditional love, your inner critic may actually be a survival strategy—not your identity.

In this episode you'll learn:

✔️ Why children borrow the voices around them

✔️ How those voices become your nervous system's default setting

✔️ Why affirmations sometimes don't work

✔️ The connection between childhood trauma and your inner critic

✔️ One simple exercise that can begin changing your relationship with yourself today

If you've ever struggled with perfectionism, anxiety, people-pleasing, or self-doubt, this episode will help you understand why—and more importantly, what you can begin doing differently.

Speaker:

Welcome back to another episode of

Tammy's Takes, where we take powerful

2

:

conversations with our guests and

turn them into practical strategies

3

:

you can use right here, right now.

4

:

So if you missed my first conversation

with Isabelle Chiara, I highly

5

:

recommend you go back and listen

to that episode after this one.

6

:

Isabelle has such a unique way of

looking at healing, and both of our

7

:

conversations have centered around

something I believe every adult child

8

:

of dysfunction needs to understand.

9

:

Healing starts from within, from the

inside out, not from the outside in.

10

:

So in today's conversation, or actually

yesterday's conversation, Isabelle said

11

:

something that really caught my attention.

12

:

She talked about paying attention to the

conversation you're having with yourself.

13

:

When she said that, I couldn't

help but think, "Yes, but it

14

:

goes so much deeper than that."

15

:

Because after years of working with

adult children of dysfunction, I've

16

:

come to believe that something that has

completely changed the way I coach people.

17

:

The voice in your head isn't always yours.

18

:

Think about that for a moment.

19

:

How many times have you caught

yourself saying, "I'm so stupid.

20

:

I never do anything right.

21

:

I always mess things up.

22

:

I should've known better.

23

:

Why can't I do everything?

24

:

I'm just too sensitive."

25

:

The list goes on and on.

26

:

And find that people actually

assume that's just who they are.

27

:

I don't.

28

:

I think those are borrowed voices.

29

:

You see, none of us came into

this world criticizing ourselves.

30

:

A two-year-old doesn't look in the

mirror and think, "I'm not good enough."

31

:

Children learn who they are by

listening to the people around them.

32

:

If you grew up in a home where you

were encouraged, comforted, and

33

:

made to feel safe, those voices

became part of your inner world.

34

:

But if you grew up walking on eggshells,

if love felt conditional, if your

35

:

emotions were ignored, if you made a

mistake and you got punished, or even

36

:

if you learned that what you said

didn't matter Your brain adapted,

37

:

not because something was wrong with

you, because that's what children do.

38

:

Children don't question their

caregivers, they question themselves.

39

:

A child can't survive believing the

people they depend on aren't safe.

40

:

So instead, they make

a different conclusion.

41

:

They internalize it.

42

:

They flip it around.

43

:

They figure it must be me.

44

:

I'm too much.

45

:

I'm not enough.

46

:

If I could just be better,

maybe I'd finally be loved.

47

:

Those are the things children think

in their heads, and those beliefs

48

:

do not stay in childhood, my friend.

49

:

They become automatic thoughts.

50

:

These automatic thoughts create

emotions, and these emotions create

51

:

physical sensations in the body.

52

:

So what happens?

53

:

Your shoulders tighten, your jaw

clenches, your breathing is shallow.

54

:

Oh my goodness, how many of us walk

around and you're taking a shallow breath?

55

:

Pay attention right now

to how you're breathing.

56

:

So many people are taking short breaths.

57

:

Your stomach cannot up.

58

:

It feels like something's

sitting in your stomach.

59

:

You have no appetite, just, ugh,

it feels that gross feeling.

60

:

Eventually, honestly, your body

starts reacting physically before

61

:

you've even had a conscious thought.

62

:

That's why I say your inner voice

doesn't just live in your mind.

63

:

It becomes your nervous system.

64

:

And this is why so many people

get frustrated with healing.

65

:

Because they've read the book,

they've listened to the podcast,

66

:

they've repeated the affirmations,

they've tried positive thinking,

67

:

but every time something stressful

happens, their body reacts before

68

:

their mind has a chance to catch up.

69

:

You can stand in the mirror all day

and say, "I'm worthy, I'm enough,

70

:

I'm safe," but if your nervous

system has spent 30 or 40 years

71

:

preparing for criticism, rejection,

or abandonment, - your body isn't

72

:

quite convinced yet that you are safe.

73

:

And that's okay, because healing

isn't about forcing yourself to

74

:

believe something your body isn't

ready for Healing is about creating

75

:

enough safe spaces that your body

slowly begins to believe a new story.

76

:

That's why I teach healing

through body, mind, and spirit,

77

:

because you can't separate them.

78

:

Your thoughts affect your body,

your body affects your thoughts.

79

:

And when you reconnect with your spirit,

with who you truly are beneath all those

80

:

survival strategies, you begin to realize

that honestly, you're something beautiful.

81

:

You were never broken.

82

:

you adapted, and you did it well.

83

:

You did it out of survival.

84

:

Your nervous system did exactly

what it was designed to do.

85

:

It protected you.

86

:

The problem is, is that what protected

you as a child may now be preventing

87

:

you from fully living as an adult.

88

:

So let me leave you with a

simple exercise this week.

89

:

The next time you catch

yourself criticizing yourself,

90

:

don't argue with the thought.

91

:

Don't try to replace it

with a positive affirmation.

92

:

Just pause.

93

:

Take a slow, deep breath, and ask yourself

one question: "Whose voice is this?

94

:

Is it really yours?

95

:

Or does it sound like a parent, or

a teacher, or an ex-partner, or a

96

:

sibling, or someone who constantly

made you feel like you weren't enough?"

97

:

Because the moment you recognize

the voice isn't yours, you create a

98

:

little space, and in that space, you

get to choose a different response.

99

:

Maybe instead of saying, "I'm such an

idiot," you simply saying, "I'm learning."

100

:

Instead of saying, "I always ruin

everything," maybe you could just say

101

:

to yourself, "I made a mistake, and

mistakes are part of being human."

102

:

And notice that I'm not asking

you to jump from self-hatred to

103

:

complete self-love overnight.

104

:

Your nervous system probably wouldn't

believe that either, honestly, but

105

:

it might believe, "I'm learning."

106

:

Healing usually happens in

believable steps, not giant leaps.

107

:

So this week, every time your

inner critic shows up, pause,

108

:

take a dep- take a breath, and ask

yourself, "Whose voice is this?"

109

:

And then ask one more question:

"If that voice isn't mine, what

110

:

would my voice sound like?"

111

:

Because I truly believe that's the voice

you've been searching for all along.

112

:

If today's episode resonated with you,

if you recognize that inner voice,

113

:

if you're tired of living in survival

mode, or if you're wondering what

114

:

your next step in healing looks like,

I would absolutely love to help you.

115

:

I offer a complimentary clarity and

calm call where we'll spend time talking

116

:

about where you are, what's keeping

you stuck, and some practical next

117

:

steps you can begin taking right away.

118

:

There's absolutely no

pressure, my friends.

119

:

It's simply an opportunity to connect,

ask questions and see if working

120

:

together is the right next step for you.

121

:

You can schedule your free call

using the link in the show notes.

122

:

Thank you so much for spending time

with me today, and remember, healing

123

:

through body, mind, and spirit

is not about fixing who you are.

124

:

It's about helping you stop

surviving and start living, and

125

:

going back to who you were born.

126

:

I'll see you next week, and I hope you

have a beautiful week and a beautiful day.

127

:

Love you guys.
