Hey everybody.
2
:Welcome back to another edition
of the daily Bible podcast.
3
:Happy Monday.
4
:Happy Monday, happy winter revival week.
5
:Celebrating it the whole week.
6
:Yeah, it's the whole week long.
7
:Yeah.
8
:In fact, I don't know the weather
cause I'm not a prophet and we're
9
:recording this ahead of time.
10
:There is supposed to be a
little bit of snow tonight that
11
:potentially could hit the metroplex.
12
:I'm seeing reports of, of
a dusting up to an inch.
13
:It's not like we got last
week, not like 6, 7, 8 inches.
14
:Um, but it could be like an inch.
15
:In fact, my daughter was saying,
you know what, maybe they'll
16
:cancel school on Tuesday.
17
:And then maybe the snow will,
will melt and freeze and they'll
18
:cancel school on Wednesday.
19
:And she was like, and then I'll go
on revival and then I'll have the
20
:whole week off and it'll be great.
21
:So I told her not to get
her hopes on upon that.
22
:And to pray it up any.
23
:Let's see what happens.
24
:Let's see how good your prayers are.
25
:Maybe there's a dusting of
snow headed our way tonight.
26
:I know my kids are excited about revival.
27
:I know a lot of them are so.
28
:Not to be.
29
:I'm excited about it.
30
:It's going to be great, man.
31
:The house
32
:Rod: alone is going to be super cool.
33
:Retreat houses are fun.
34
:PJ: Yeah.
35
:Rod: Yeah.
36
:And it's probably one of the
last times I'll be able to do
37
:something like this because , the
bigger we get got willing, right.
38
:The more space we're going
to need in a place like this,
39
:isn't going to be feasible.
40
:Right.
41
:But right now it's really cool.
42
:Really special.
43
:PJ: Yup.
44
:Yup.
45
:So.
46
:Uh, I.
47
:You may be listening to this
right now, going, you know what.
48
:I've been hesitant.
49
:I haven't made the decision
yet, but I think I really want
50
:my kids to go on this retreat.
51
:I imagine there's still a
possibility to make that happen.
52
:If you get in touch with us here
at the church office, we can.
53
:Find a way to get your, your kids
registered and get them out there.
54
:Or you could just go to the
55
:Rod: website and sign up.
56
:The form we'll close that the second
that we rented a space, we have,
57
:we do have a firm number because
obviously the house has limited beds.
58
:But.
59
:, we still have several spots open.
60
:So if you want to do this and you want to
send your kids, or maybe you want to come.
61
:I can't guarantee that we'll let you come.
62
:, as muCh as I might want to, I
just, I can't let you, but you
63
:could sign up a neighbor's kid.
64
:And maybe, maybe you want to do
that, but let them know first.
65
:PJ: Yeah.
66
:Hey, I send your kid up for this retreat.
67
:They're going
68
:Rod: or don't kidnap
them the night before.
69
:That would be horrible.
70
:And send them to the retreat the next day
71
:PJ: don't do
72
:Rod: that.
73
:PJ: Yeah.
74
:We want our church to continue and
we don't want any police presence,
75
:Rod: but they say no press is bad press.
76
:Is that the phrase?
77
:Yeah.
78
:I don't know that.
79
:That's true.
80
:Well, yeah, it would put
us in the news though.
81
:It would make it newsworthy.
82
:That is for sure.
83
:And then they would interview you
and say, you're the lead pastor?
84
:How did this happen under your watch?
85
:And then you'll be able to say,
well, let me just tell you about
86
:the gospel and people will be
still enthusiastic about that.
87
:They'll show up to our church in droves.
88
:It'll grow.
89
:PJ: Overnight.
90
:I like this idea, all of a sudden now.
91
:Okay.
92
:We need to find volunteers now.
93
:Just for the record, we are
completely joking upon this.
94
:If something happens,
this is a total joke.
95
:This is not conspiracy.
96
:This is not premeditated.
97
:Anything.
98
:This.
99
:Rod: Too late.
100
:It's
101
:PJ: in joke
102
:Rod: recordings.
103
:They're going to use it.
104
:They're not going to, they're not
going to give context that the
105
:news media is not about giving
context is going to do a nuance.
106
:They're just going to say
here's what they said.
107
:PJ: Yeah.
108
:You tell us what he's saying.
109
:Yeah.
110
:I don't know.
111
:Well, let's talk about what
God we're seeing in the Bible.
112
:Genesis 25 and 26 today.
113
:Uh, Genesis 25 Abraham, uh, here
towards the end of his life.
114
:You remember his wife?
115
:Uh, has now died, she's passed away.
116
:And so, uh, Abraham ends up
taking another wife for himself.
117
:This wife's name is Kitora.
118
:Um, There's a lot of.
119
:Polygamy.
120
:Now this isn't necessarily a polygamy
in the truest sense, because I guess.
121
:His first wife died.
122
:But there's a lot of multiple wives in
the Bible, and I think it's important
123
:for us to make the clear distinction
now and we'll have to revisit it again
124
:because it comes up time and time again.
125
:You never find God in the old Testament
condoning the amassing of multiple wives.
126
:You never have.
127
:God's saying, this is a good thing.
128
:You should do this.
129
:Marry multiple people.
130
:Um, it happens.
131
:And it's it's recorded because in, and
this is another evidence of the fact
132
:that the Bible is trustworthy because it
records the, the warts and the errors as
133
:much as records, all the victories and the
heroic moments of, uh, the key players.
134
:And, and so here again,
you have a situation where.
135
:Abraham takes this other wife,
whose name was Katurah, and we
136
:have to ask ourselves, okay, is
this, was this what God desired in?
137
:I don't, I don't think I can
get there because if you look at
138
:verse two, it says she bore him.
139
:Zimmerman, junction,
mitten, meeting, and Midian.
140
:So from this marriage of this, this other
woman comes to the Midianite people.
141
:This is the clean of the Midianites.
142
:They're not going to be a
friend to the Israelites at all.
143
:Again, this is another people
group that's going to be a thorn.
144
:To the people of Israel there.
145
:So here.
146
:Uh, towards the, uh, the
end of Abraham's life.
147
:I don't think this is a high point
in his life here by taking this
148
:wife and having another child by her
149
:Rod: in first Chronicles.
150
:One actually tells us
that she's a concubine.
151
:So I think there's a bit of
fuzziness between wife and concubine.
152
:Yeah.
153
:But later we find out that at least
the author of Chronicles thinks that
154
:she's a concubine, which we think we
can then say, okay, I guess that's
155
:what she was, which tells us that her.
156
:Her role in the family, I guess,
was that of the matriarch.
157
:She had the place of honor a
position, but she was still
158
:nevertheless, a concubine, which is.
159
:Technically less than a wife.
160
:Yeah.
161
:PJ: Yeah.
162
:Yeah.
163
:As the chapter progresses, then
Abraham does eventually die.
164
:Verse eight, breathed his last and died
in a good old age, 175 years old, full
165
:of years, and gathered to his people.
166
:His two sons bury him in that same
cave where he had buried Sarah.
167
:Um, and then after the death
of Abraham, it says in verse
168
:11, God blessed Isaac, his son.
169
:This is the author, this Moses helping us
understand that the Abrahamic blessing to
170
:Abraham and Kevin is progressing and it's
progressing through who, not Ishmael, but.
171
:Through Isaac.
172
:And so it's going to come through
Isaac that the blessings are
173
:going to continue, but then.
174
:What about Ishmael?
175
:Well, it does turn to Ishmael and it talks
about him and some of his descendants
176
:and some of his generations there.
177
:And then it does eventually
record that, that Ishmael himself.
178
:Dies in this chapter, but not before.
179
:Uh, giving birth or not him giving
birth, but not before father.
180
:That's the word fathering, the
head of, uh, their own 12 tribes in
181
:fulfillment of God's promise to Hagar.
182
:So here's the fulfillment of God's promise
to Hagar being recorded for us by Moses
183
:in verses one through 18 of Genesis 25.
184
:After this, then we get the
birth of Esau and Jacob.
185
:And so you've got shifting
back now to Isaac away from
186
:Ishmael the center promise.
187
:Now, Isaac is back on the scene in Isaac
prays for his wife because his wife
188
:is barren and God has promised that he
would be the father of multitudes, just
189
:like he had promised that to Abraham.
190
:And so here, he's dealing with
another situation of bareness.
191
:This comes up a lot.
192
:Uh, with the promise line.
193
:And it's interesting, we're going to
see this again with, uh, with Jacob's
194
:wives and, and, uh, it's, it's almost as
though God is saying, do you trust me?
195
:Do you trust me?
196
:Do you trust me?
197
:Are you going to trust me?
198
:And we've seen it before.
199
:We've seen it again here and Isaac
to his credit praise for God to bring
200
:children to his wife, Rebecca and God.
201
:He listens to him and gives
him twins, gives her twins.
202
:Um, and there's the prophecy here that
there's two nations, Jacob and Esau
203
:are going to be these two nations.
204
:The older is going to suffer the younger.
205
:That's going to come back into
play as we get to a, to more of
206
:what's going to happen there.
207
:Uh, but that's a prophecy that
is, is going to be significant
208
:as this continues to unfold.
209
:And I wonder.
210
:If this doesn't have something
to do with why Rebecca ends up
211
:loving Jacob, as much as she does.
212
:Uh, because clearly Esau and
in, in Isaac have a special
213
:relationship, a special bond.
214
:And we're going to see that
later on as everything develops.
215
:But Jacob and Rebecca have
their own close knit bond.
216
:And I wonder if it comes back to this
prophecy that Rebecca heard, Hey,
217
:there's two nations in your room.
218
:And the younger is going to be the
one that is going to rule the older
219
:is going to serve the younger.
220
:And I wonder though, I think
Rebecca goes outside the bounds
221
:of what God's design and plan was.
222
:I wonder if she was trying to secure that,
that was going to be the fulfillment,
223
:that that was going to be reality.
224
:And she's worried that it's not because,
well, if my husband blesses the older,
225
:how is this going to come into fruition?
226
:And so that's why she gives special favor.
227
:So to speak to Jacob as
he's growing up there.
228
:Rod: Yeah.
229
:That's a great theory.
230
:I think the thing that stands out
to me as we read through chapter
231
:25, again, are the time markers.
232
:We read it quickly, but
it's not happening quickly.
233
:In fact, the thing that we learn about
Isaac and Rebecca is that he's not
234
:getting married until he's 40 years old.
235
:That's old, that's huge, really old.
236
:I mean, that's ancient.
237
:You might as well retire.
238
:It's time to go home soon.
239
:Right.
240
:That's how old this guy is.
241
:I'm just joking, obviously.
242
:I have to go.
243
:There's people that have.
244
:taking time to get married
for a variety of reasons.
245
:And I think Isaac's a really good example.
246
:He waited patiently, I suppose.
247
:But then also notice that after he
marries Rebecca, well, we read it that
248
:he's praying for her because she's
barren, but he prays for 20 years.
249
:He's praying for 20 years.
250
:We again, glance over that,
but he's praying for 20 years
251
:for God to give his wife has.
252
:His woman.
253
:Kids, and God does that, but 20 years
later, so this is one of those things
254
:where you're having to trust God
over the long course of time, which
255
:for us feels like a very long time,
but for God is a blink of an eye
256
:because he exists outside of time.
257
:Really interesting to know here,
pay attention to those things.
258
:That's a big deal, and I think it will
help increase and encourage your faith.
259
:As you think about the fact that
God didn't work on microwave speed.
260
:He took his time and he takes
his time to do the things that
261
:he wants to do in the right time.
262
:And I think that's something I
take great comfort from, and that's
263
:PJ: a great point because it does totally
change the impact of this passage.
264
:If you just read it, like he
prayed and then here's the babies.
265
:Or if you read it and go, he's
praying for 20 years, right.
266
:And then there's the answer to prayer.
267
:Yeah.
268
:And, and we've got a lot to
pray for, for our church.
269
:I mean, we're praying that God
would continue to grow our church.
270
:We would love to be in a facility
at some point in time and, and hope
271
:it's not going to take 40 years.
272
:I hope it's not going to take 40 years.
273
:It's not going to take 20 years.
274
:Um, but you know, it's, it's
good for us to continue to
275
:pray and trust God with those.
276
:Those requests is good for us to continue
to bring those things before him.
277
:Uh, there's a lot, um, between
the relationship of Jacob and
278
:Esau that, uh, is worth note here.
279
:If you jump to Romans chapter
nine, verses 10 through 13, as Paul
280
:is talking about the doctrine of
election, he appeals back to this.
281
:And it says that before they were born,
when neither had done anything good or
282
:evil, God had chosen one over the other.
283
:Uh, Malakai one, two through three
is quoted there in Romans nine as
284
:well about these two boys and says
that God loved Jacob and Esau.
285
:He hated.
286
:Um, and, and it's, it's difficult, but
it's an evidence of God's sovereignty
287
:over the life of, uh, these two boys
and, and really over the unfolding of
288
:the, the, the life of not just Israel,
but remember, uh, Jacob is going to be
289
:the one that is going to perpetuate the
Abrahamic covenant, which is part of it.
290
:The gospel, according to Paul
in Galatians chapter three.
291
:Including that one of his
descendants would be the one
292
:that would bless all nations.
293
:So this matters to us too.
294
:As God is working all of these
things out in his purview, in
295
:his wisdom behind the scenes.
296
:Uh, Romans nine is going to reflect back
on this and provide commentary as is
297
:Malika chapter one, verses two and three.
298
:Versus 29 through 34 then, uh, as the
boys grow up, there's a scene here where,
299
:uh, You saw it comes in from hunting and
there's Jacob having cooked something
300
:up on the stove and Esau's hungry.
301
:And Jacob says, Hey,
sell me your birthright.
302
:And it says in the text that Esau
despised his birthright because
303
:he treats it so flippantly as
to sell it for a bowl of stew.
304
:Now, the birthright would have been.
305
:He's you saw it.
306
:It's basically surrendering his rights
to the inheritance as the first born.
307
:So Jacob is now going to
get the double portion.
308
:He's going to get the, the majority
of the, the inheritance there.
309
:And so Esau gives that up for a
bowl of stew and he does so, and
310
:it's just a reminder of, of the
danger of the decisions that we
311
:make in the passions of our flesh.
312
:The, the, the less of our flesh can
cause us to do things that we sacrifice
313
:way more than it's worth in the end.
314
:And we see that, I think with
the example of his hunger here,
315
:Rod: I think this tells me that
Jacob's cooking was really good.
316
:PJ: It could be that team.
317
:Maybe it's both.
318
:It could be both.
319
:Yeah.
320
:Uh, chapter 26, then, uh,
we've got another famine.
321
:And yet this time God forbids Isaac from
going down to Egypt, as Abraham had done.
322
:And then God with, with Isaac, they
reiterate the Abrahamic covenant to Isaac.
323
:So specifically now, He's passing
on the promises of blessing and
324
:land and offspring to Isaac.
325
:And so, uh, again, Genesis 26
4, here he is reiterating this
326
:point, repeating this point.
327
:Uh, where he says in your offspring
shall all the nations of Europe people.
328
:So this is pointing again down the road
to Jesus as the ultimate descendant.
329
:That's going to bless not only all the
families, but now all the nations of
330
:the earth, the goyim, the Gentiles.
331
:Are going to be blessed through one
of the descendants there of Isaac.
332
:Verses six through 35, then 26 Isaac comes
to live in Philistine territory here.
333
:Uh, for some time and the Lord
blesses him and multiplies his flocks
334
:and possessions to the point that
the Philistines begin to fear him.
335
:And they're saying, Hey, this
guy is getting too strong
336
:and too wealthy among us.
337
:And so they send him
away from their presence.
338
:And yet again, the Lord promises
in confirms his promises to Isaac.
339
:And at the end of the chapter, we find.
340
:Uh, Esau they're in this kind of
flashback to meanwhile with ISA
341
:is just rebelling more and more
and more against his parents here.
342
:So, um, Things you mentioned
with, with Isaac things.
343
:Are, are, are there some
good things about Isaac?
344
:Some not great things about Isaac?
345
:Uh, the conflict that we see
amongst his boys here is fomenting.
346
:And, uh, in at least indicating that, that
there was a little bit of an application
347
:of, of godly leadership from Isaac,
with his, uh, with his two boys there.
348
:Any other thoughts PR
on, on 26, 25, there.
349
:Rod: No, except just to
give you a notation here,
350
:Isaac's a hundred years old.
351
:When these things are taking
place, he dies at 180.
352
:He thinks that.
353
:He's about to leave soon.
354
:He thinks he's about to die
soon, which is why we're about
355
:to enter into the blessing.
356
:He's preparing to, to let go, but he
has another 80 years on top of this.
357
:So just to give you a sense of the timing
for Isaac's life, a hundred years old as
358
:one chapter 27 takes place, give or take.
359
:Yeah.
360
:That's, that's
361
:PJ: a helpful note because
yeah, I was thinking about that
362
:recently because we're going to.
363
:You know, a little while here,
we're going to see when he does
364
:die, then Jacob's like, oh no, Esau.
365
:He said I was going to come after me.
366
:Right.
367
:But that's still a ways away from where.
368
:I know that.
369
:Yeah, it doesn't know that yet.
370
:So.
371
:All right.
372
:Well, Hey, let's pray.
373
:And then we'll be done with this episode.
374
:Got thanks for your word.
375
:And, uh, and for the promises that
you've made and for the way that you
376
:work things out, according to your plan.
377
:In ways that we had made are
above our pay grade ways that
378
:we don't always understand.
379
:And yet we trust you with that.
380
:And so we thank you for your sovereign
unfolding of the way that you were going
381
:to bring about your plan for salvation.
382
:Uh, through one of the descendants of
Isaac through one of the descendants,
383
:ultimately of Jacob and through one of
the descendants of Jacob's son, Judah, and
384
