On the morning of 4th February 1954, a Bristol Britannia took off from Filton on a test flight, with Captain Arthur John Pegg, nicknamed Bill, aged 47, at the controls. They were also trying to impress representatives from Dutch airline KLM into buying some. What happened within a few minutes of take off would become major news.
