Speaker:So that's, it's very hard.

Speaker:You can't really convey that to someone unless they've had a kid.
Speaker:Oh, because I, I get told all sorts of stories, you know, the best thing that
Speaker:someone told me was, it is the best and worst thing that'll ever happen to you.
Speaker:Absolutely.
Speaker:It's like, yeah, it
Speaker:is.
Speaker:That especially the first one.
Speaker:The first one is like such a disruption to your life.
Speaker:'cause you are once, and you would know this, Matt, you
Speaker:just recently had a, had Noah.
Speaker:You're like, you can do whatever the fuck you want.
Speaker:You can sleep in, you can stay up late.
Speaker:You can go out and get drunk and be hung over.
Speaker:You can't do that
Speaker:How are you going?
Speaker:Are you enjoying it?
Speaker:Like, have you Yeah,
Speaker:me, I'm good.

Speaker:Uh, for, for me as a guy, like I, I feel pretty good about it.
Speaker:I'm the oldest of four kids, so, you know, I've gone through
Speaker:something similar a few times.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:I would say, um, for my wife, definitely much, much harder.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:So she's got, you know, history of anxiety and stuff and Yeah.
Speaker:Uh, going through that sort of to be like frank postnatal depression
Speaker:sort of stuff is, there's a lot.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:Definitely.
Speaker:She's doing everything right there.
Speaker:I, I know that, I know there's probably not, this, not, there's definitely
Speaker:not the reason why we got you on, but I think the, I think it actually is
Speaker:an interesting to talk about because I've had male friends that have gone
Speaker:through postnatal depression and also I know of, um, women close to me who've
Speaker:gone through postnatal depression.
Speaker:I know Lucy had a little bit.
Speaker:Um, and it is actually a thing that people should be aware of and talk about more.
Speaker:We have to get Julie back on.
Speaker:Maybe that's something
Speaker:we do.
Speaker:Get Julie back, you know?
Speaker:'cause there are a lot of young dads like listening to this and
Speaker:it's a thing and young moms not, you're not doing anything wrong.
Speaker:You know, it's just something that's a reality.
Speaker:And
Speaker:the way that I put it now, like having this experience with my wife and
Speaker:whatnot, um, she's doing well now.
Speaker:It's really good.
Speaker:Shout out to, she was always doing well.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:Oh, shout out to the Australian healthcare system.
Speaker:Like, it's incredible, like the amount of resources out there for you if
Speaker:you know, like that they're there.
Speaker:Um.
Speaker:This sort of stuff is super common, like speaking to so many women
Speaker:now, they're like, oh, you know.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:It was the worst thing ever.
Speaker:Like I, I spoke to my mom and, yeah, I don't know if it's on YouTube, but
Speaker:she literally said to me, she was a single mom with me when she had me, and
Speaker:she said, you know, I was on the 13th floor balcony, just sort of thinking,
Speaker:is this high enough at one point.
Speaker:Wow.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:And so this is not an unusual story
Speaker:and like, and I don't know enough about it, but I'm just gonna butcher
Speaker:this and I, and I hope, um, I hope I don't get caught out for this.
Speaker:My understanding is that when you are.
Speaker:You, you're not really set up for success, are you?
Speaker:Because you generally go into labor at nighttime, so you
Speaker:don't sleep for 24 hours.
Speaker:Your baby comes in the morning and then you are awake trying
Speaker:to look after this small human.
Speaker:You are the reason that this thing stays alive.
Speaker:All that responsibility comes, you know, comes back to you.
Speaker:You're trying to then catch up to this 24 hour bender that you've just gone on.
Speaker:You should
Speaker:be used to that, shouldn't you?
Speaker:What's that?
Speaker:You should be used to that.
Speaker:And then all of your hormones just change like that.
Speaker:I'd say the no sleep and the hormones thing.
Speaker:Insane.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:Like if you've ever seen one of those really roed up sort of
Speaker:gym junkie kind of guys, or if you've got any friends like that.
Speaker:You know when they come off cycle Yeah.
Speaker:They're, they're a bit wild, you know?
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:Very similar.
Speaker:If you've had a baby in you and you've had X number of hormones for nine months and
Speaker:you go cold Turkey next day, no steroids.
Speaker:It's crazy.
Speaker:Well, you know, that's a, you know, that's a really good analogy.
Speaker:I reckon three men talking about giving birth.
Speaker:Yeah,
Speaker:yeah.
Speaker:Alright, listen up please.
Speaker:Lemme tell you a thing about childbirth, but I think it's a good thing to
Speaker:like touch on and we're not gonna spend the whole conversation talking

Speaker:My background's in land surveying and now I'm with, uh, CI Kennedy,
Speaker:uh, CI Kennedy being, uh, Australia wide and New Zealand distributor for
Speaker:photography, drones, medical imaging, digital construction products.
Speaker:We now do robots as

Speaker:Yeah, so CR Kennedy I suppose like the interesting part about
Speaker:it is that it's been an Australian family business for 92 years now.
Speaker:So what did
Speaker:it start out doing?
Speaker:Um, originally, not robots.
Speaker:I should memorize the whole spiel to be honest, but I believe
Speaker:it was photography, so, okay.
Speaker:Importing, you know, hassle blood and Pentax and all the
Speaker:sort of highend camera systems.
Speaker:And they just
Speaker:generally speaking, like just all for, for construction.
Speaker:Uh, for construction.
Speaker:I'd say that's the last.
Speaker:Sort of 15 years that they've picked up into, I think
Speaker:they just would've had a camera would've been cool.
Speaker:This is back, this is back in like 1930 something where it's like a camera.
Speaker:Dear God, you're stealing my soul.
Speaker:It's, uh, yeah.
Speaker:So it's changed a lot since, but now we've got, you know,
Speaker:fingers in all sorts of pies.
Speaker:But the reason that I'm here is because we've got a pretty big focus and Leica,
Speaker:so we do Leica products, which lasers and measuring equipment, uh, globally.
Speaker:Um.
Speaker:I have a big focus on the construction industry now.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:So I think my whole spiel about it is.
Speaker:The last 20 years.
Speaker:Right.
Speaker:Uh, the biggest change in tech is that whatever, it still does the same
Speaker:thing, but it's way easier to use.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:Like, it's not, you don't have to be a, a rocket surgeon to pull
Speaker:out a laser these days, and the laser is the size of your phone.
Speaker:Like it's supposed to jump.
Speaker:I wonder
Speaker:how much smaller it's gonna get.
Speaker:Are we gonna like, have things in our eyes that we just like blink
Speaker:and it just measured something?
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:Well, I mean, I can get into that if you want.
Speaker:I mean, like, I guess the, the, the sort of the biggest gateway drug that
Speaker:you guys provide to the industry, in my opinion, is your 3D camera.
Speaker:Which is, you know, I guess where we started, um, with our
Speaker:relationship with you guys.
Speaker:And we're very slowly working towards getting one of these
Speaker:beautiful, uh, set out stations.
Speaker:So
Speaker:the construction camera, honestly, and I'm, this isn't just a plug for you guys.
Speaker:If you are a builder and you do not have one Yeah.
Speaker:Fucking idiot.
Speaker:Well, I actually think straight, straight out.
Speaker:It's so, so
Speaker:cheap and affordable.
Speaker:So for the cost.
Speaker:Uh, 1500 bucks, whatever, whatever it is,
Speaker:it's, you get a pizza if you pay 1500 as well.
Speaker:Sorry.
Speaker:There you go.
Speaker:Perfect.
Speaker:Great.
Speaker:A pizza
Speaker:Uhhuh.
Speaker:Uh, but it is like, if you think about, um, oh, we're always talking
Speaker:about risk management, right?
Speaker:And we're talking about like giving the best product to our clients for
Speaker:us to go around at certain stages and do a full 3D walkthrough one.
Speaker:To show the client that, hey, that thing is in the wall.
Speaker:But two, Matt, I know you've got a story about forgetting about where some, so I've
Speaker:got two stories.
Speaker:One of my clients was living in Japan.
Speaker:Yep.
Speaker:The whole build.
Speaker:Mm-hmm.
Speaker:We just scan, kept scanning it and sending it to them.
Speaker:Perfect.
Speaker:They picked up errors along the way, like we didn't think that.
Speaker:Door was gonna be like that.
Speaker:Can we change it?
Speaker:Can we do this easy?
Speaker:They actually went full nerd and got the full visual gla, uh, goggles.
Speaker:Oh, wow.
Speaker:Or like walk around their house.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:So that was so, well you can do that with the, with the client.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:They can do walkthroughs.
Speaker:So walk, so they did that.
Speaker:So perfect for a client that might, if you're building in maybe a remote area
Speaker:that you want to keep the client informed.
Speaker:Um, or they're not on site all the time or they're extremely busy.
Speaker:So that was one now two my own house where.
Speaker:$1,500 for a camera.
Speaker:We'll just say that's what it costs.
Speaker:I don't actually remember the cost, but not gonna be
Speaker:12 or 30.
Speaker:I can't remember.
Speaker:Yeah, so

Speaker:So we, we'll have a, for the 1500 prize.
Speaker:So what mean you'll split the difference.
Speaker:What I did is we scanned pre plaster every project.
Speaker:You can see everything.
Speaker:We can measure a Batten if we need to hang something from the wall, from
Speaker:a TV to a piece of artwork, or can't find a pipe when joiners are wanting
Speaker:to screw something through and we don't wanna hit the pipe so we can
Speaker:remember where everything is a lot more.
Speaker:And it's all measured to within a few mil like we've tested.
Speaker:It's pretty good.
Speaker:It's generally pretty reliable.
Speaker:I usually say a finger width or sorry, like
Speaker:that's what you can, yeah, like it's incredibly close.
Speaker:So what happened is the.
Speaker:I dunno if I should blame Drew passive jerk here.
Speaker:But what happened is that I think you can, yeah, I'm gonna blame him.
Speaker:I think you can blame, I don't think it was his fault, but I'm gonna blame him.
Speaker:What happened in, in my, my toilet?
Speaker:The water closet.
Speaker:The HRV outlet.
Speaker:I don't wanna know what happens
Speaker:in your, when no was not long.
Speaker:It wasn't long enough.
Speaker:Or it got cut by someone and the plaster plastered over it.
Speaker:Okay.
Speaker:We didn't, I had finished tiles everywhere.
Speaker:It was all like, and like to rip and find it.
Speaker:If I got it wrong, I was screwed.
Speaker:Like,
Speaker:do you know what I reckon Grand design were thinking going, yes,
Speaker:he's pulling
Speaker:tiles off the wall.
Speaker:So content.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:Great content.
Speaker:But what happened is.
Speaker:We got that camera up, measured the scan off all four walls.
Speaker:It was the same pinpoint, put a hole through, little hole through piece of
Speaker:wire to make sure we're touching it.
Speaker:It's like bang on the middle.
Speaker:Found it.
Speaker:I can tell you it was gonna be a lot more than $1,500 to fix that problem.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:And that camera paid for itself off in one, one instant hit.
Speaker:So,
Speaker:and it's not just that too, like we're obviously in the high
Speaker:performance game and I know, have you been talking to the guys from
Speaker:some of the passive house designers about utilizing the scans as, um,
Speaker:I guess Ference Point certification
Speaker:reference.
Speaker:Yeah, potentially.
Speaker:So the idea is that you can actually get like full floor plans out
Speaker:of it if you are that inclined.
Speaker:Where we've got some architects that probably use the more step
Speaker:up commercial version of it that.
Speaker:They use for their sort of renovation measure, their mapping,
Speaker:the mapping sort of stuff.
Speaker:Yep.
Speaker:Um, which again, for what you guys do, you do mainly new builds, so
Speaker:it's probably less relevant, but yeah, you can definitely use that
Speaker:for mapping some existing buildings and retrofitting or reevaluating.
Speaker:Are
Speaker:they a lot more expensive?
Speaker:Like, uh,
Speaker:the commercial ones, like 12 grand or so?
Speaker:But
Speaker:if you are said, if you are designing 10, 15 projects a year on renovations
Speaker:and you are mapping out constantly.
Speaker:That's,
Speaker:oh, it's a no brainer thing that that makes No, that's, yeah, we like to
Speaker:say things like that, even with the set out tools, like, it's not for
Speaker:everyone, but for the people it's for, it's not even a question, it's
Speaker:just, all right, I'm gonna use that.
Speaker:Like, yeah, twice a month, three times a month, whatever.
Speaker:I'm get paid off in two months.
Speaker:Done.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:So
Speaker:yeah,
Speaker:it's, um, yeah, that's the nature of a lot of those sort of tech that we do as well.
Speaker:It's not for everyone.
Speaker:We tend to do the more sort of high end or specific, you guys, it's passive
Speaker:house, you know, the more specific solutions to things, but for the people
Speaker:that you know, have the value in it.
Speaker:It's not even a, a question like, I, I don't really have
Speaker:to pitch it so much, you know?
Speaker:So we, we know, we know about the, um, the gateway drug, and that's the camera.
Speaker:I really want you to dive into the set outs, total stations and, and
Speaker:even I guess, the robotic add-ons that I know you can do to the
Speaker:total stations with the mobile.
Speaker:Can I flip the script a bit?
Speaker:Absolutely.
Speaker:Flip ask
Speaker:a total station is a laser level to some extent is a base
Speaker:it does
Speaker:that.
Speaker:Yeah,
Speaker:yeah, yeah.
Speaker:It does that.
Speaker:If there's base level does anything else but to flip the script a
Speaker:little bit, 'cause I think it might help, um, 'cause I imagine you
Speaker:have a lot of builders that Yeah.
Speaker:Listening to this architects might help them sort of, you know, understand
Speaker:what this sort of stuff is for.
Speaker:Yes.
Speaker:Um, talk to me about pfa.
Speaker:So what's your overview?
Speaker:'cause I've got a lot of clients in the prefab manufacturing space now, and I'm
Speaker:also, uh, spoilers, seeing Australian sustainable hardwoods, uh, next week.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:Um, talk to me about what you guys see.
Speaker:I know you are talking to Chris at the moment.
Speaker:You are mate.
Speaker:So, I, I, I, I think prefab is part of the solution to build.
Speaker:More.
Speaker:Yep.
Speaker:And I also know that when, 'cause we've done a dozen, um, SIPS projects, so
Speaker:that's some kind of prefabricated, I kind of know where your question's going.
Speaker:Which is, which is good.
Speaker:Well, trust
Speaker:is a prefabricated.
Speaker:That's a form of
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:But if you think about it like you want confidence, like
Speaker:prefab is all about speed.
Speaker:There is no point building prefab if you're waiting for the slab to
Speaker:go down, if you're waiting for the walls to go up to measure your tru
Speaker:trusses, what is gonna expedite that?
Speaker:You ordering the, before you even break ground on site, you ordering the sips.
Speaker:That's where the efficiencies is.
Speaker:How do you then make sure, and you might be able to answer this, how
Speaker:do you then make sure that the slab that you're putting on the ground
Speaker:that can't be fucking moved once it's there is millimeter perfect to
Speaker:that structure that's going on top?
Speaker:So that's pretty much the ticket where again, my background Lance
Speaker:surveying, like my experience building is, uh, I built a climbing
Speaker:wall at home and I rebuilt my deck.
Speaker:But, uh, when it comes to prefab, my perspective on it now is that when it
Speaker:works, it's the second coming of Christ.
Speaker:It's incredible.
Speaker:I've gone from like slab to lock up in like a week when it doesn't work.
Speaker:Dear God, what have I done?
Speaker:Like, what have I chosen to build prefab?
Speaker:What's wrong with me?
Speaker:Um, and there's really not that much middle ground, I'll be honest.
Speaker:Like every time I've seen something go wrong, it's gone from a week to months.
Speaker:Effectively.
Speaker:Like redesigned, potentially repermit.
Speaker:Is it
Speaker:more commercial perspective or you?
Speaker:No.
Speaker:Domestic and commercial to be honest.
Speaker:Um, SIPS manufacturers, um, um, to.
Speaker:Not name names, but, uh, one of the, one of the great Satans for you guys.
Speaker:Uh, prefab steel frames, I suppose.
Speaker:Yeah, I, I see the looks.
Speaker:Uh, I didn't say
Speaker:anything.
Speaker:Still, still works if it's tell the same envelope.
Speaker:Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Speaker:But um, there's also another one that's more, doesn't
Speaker:catch fire him.
Speaker:Jet fuel, but uh, and mixed media, sort of modular construction.
Speaker:There's someone up in Shepparton that's getting pretty big with that as well.
Speaker:Um, yeah, as you've already said, like it sort of has to click
Speaker:together like a, like a puzzle.
Speaker:Yep.
Speaker:Like a Lego set.
Speaker:Yep.
Speaker:Um, you design a slab, you design frames, you design the pieces, you
Speaker:get to site, you land, it works.
Speaker:Right.
Speaker:Okay.
Speaker:Uh, how often is your concrete flat.
Speaker:And how flat is flat.
Speaker:How our
Speaker:houses, our houses are perfect.
Speaker:They're all the tide, they're flat.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:Perfect.
Speaker:Always in the right spot.
Speaker:You guys pay, you know, top dollar for best concrete is every time the concrete
Speaker:has always spent extra, you know, two weeks checking its level, growing it.
Speaker:Absolutely.
Speaker:Yep.
Speaker:So of course it works.
Speaker:Perfect.
Speaker:So jumping back into reality, uh, I would say the best slide I saw was up
Speaker:in Bendigo and it was like across maybe a 15 by 30 sort of commercial slab.
Speaker:Worst I got was about seven mil out for height, which is nuts.
Speaker:That's good.
Speaker:That's pretty good.
Speaker:Whoa.
Speaker:Because often when you ask concrete, oh no, I'm within five mil.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:Have you checked?
Speaker:Um, nominally, I would say it's not unusual in a typical domestic
Speaker:build to see between two 10 to 20 mil in undulation in that site.

Speaker:So that's honestly the, the simplest sort of explanation for

Speaker:Step one, there you have to have, uh, a flat, you know, correct position,
Speaker:correct shape slab to construct the rest of your building on.
Speaker:The reason I brought up prefab is because in traditional construction.
Speaker:It's definitely more of a she'll be right mate situation where, you know,
Speaker:you can kind of jerry rig things around, frame stuff, make it work.
Speaker:It's fine.
Speaker:With prefab stuff, it's, it's obviously much more challenging.
Speaker:And the idea here is I've got a number of, um, both commercial domestic
Speaker:clients and manufacturers now that utilizes sort of digital layout tools
Speaker:to do that QA analysis and sort of.
Speaker:Assurance that they can maintain to their, uh, timelines on delivery
Speaker:where post poor or even during poor, they're able to validate
Speaker:flatness to within whatever amount.
Speaker:Mm-hmm.
Speaker:But in the instance that, you know, you haven't had the best day concreting
Speaker:necessary, uh, you're able to at least rapidly, I'm talking like, uh, 20 minutes.
Speaker:Um, go check all the key points where you're gonna land your frames and panels
Speaker:and mark the shim heights straight away.
Speaker:And check if you're gonna have overrun on bottom plates or anything,
Speaker:just mark that straight away
Speaker:so it's not just used for setting out a slab.
Speaker:Oh, it's that as well.
Speaker:But yeah, there's,
Speaker:so do you, like, do you use that for like, say, setting out
Speaker:electrical and all those things too?
Speaker:So it depends what you're doing.
Speaker:I would say more on slab and pre slab is the, is the ticket.
Speaker:Um, realistically you can take any plan that you've got on
Speaker:your phone or PDFs or whatever.

Speaker:What it's doing, and then what do you, and how do you do what you
Speaker:do with a screen in front of you?
Speaker:Yeah, so the way I like to tell people they're new to it normally
Speaker:is when you typically do your own set off grids or whatever you're
Speaker:using for an existing build.
Speaker:Uh, you nominate some datum, whether it's walls or the surveyors,
Speaker:marks or fences or whatever.
Speaker:Um, and you go, okay, I'm gonna tape my offsets from there and start
Speaker:laying out 3, 4, 5, blah, blah, blah.
Speaker:There I go.
Speaker:Right now, same thing on the sort of total stations, the machines.
Speaker:You'll upload your plan.
Speaker:Instead of you running around taping 3, 4, 5, check, check, check, three people.
Speaker:Whatever, uh, you point the laser to your reference points, you go, yep,
Speaker:that's one, that's two, that's three.
Speaker:It'll tell you how good they are.
Speaker:So you start with a reestablishment survey.
Speaker:Ideally get
Speaker:the pins.
Speaker:Ideally, yeah, ideally that's it, which is not always the case if you're
Speaker:building, you know, more acreage sort of situations or internal fitouts.

Speaker:Yeah,
Speaker:pick something, make it work.
Speaker:Uh, and the machine will tell you how good it is.
Speaker:You go, okay, that's good enough for me.

Speaker:Pick anything on your, on your plan, whether it's um, bottom
Speaker:plates or slab or penetrations.
Speaker:It'll guide you physically, like, which way to go and say, okay,
Speaker:cool, that's within five mil.
Speaker:Mark it there.
Speaker:Oh, better than that if you want.
Speaker:Off you go.

Speaker:So you, you can, you can actually go through and work out exactly the
Speaker:center of a waste point in a bathroom.

Speaker:generally that's the application for plumbers that we have.

Speaker:So they use either that like total station or a GPS unit
Speaker:'cause it's gotta be good enough.

Speaker:drainage, downpipes, whatever.
Speaker:They'll run out, they'll spray 'em up and they'll also check them afterwards.
Speaker:So, I mean, between doing the spray and then doing the digging and the installs.
Speaker:Bit of a difference, uh, and you'll get certainty for where they are.

Speaker:saving, it's a, there's a week to set out a whole project between two people.
Speaker:So I, I would literally have, like in my, in my set out, there might
Speaker:be five grand worth, minimum, five, six grand, minimum worth of worth
Speaker:of stuff, material, labor, whatever.
Speaker:Plus, you know, 1500 bucks to get your survey surveyor out.
Speaker:So you do five jobs a year, it's paid for itself
Speaker:at a minimum.
Speaker:That's sort of what you're looking at.
Speaker:I would say the more big ticket stuff.
Speaker:'cause often people ask me, oh, is it faster?
Speaker:Blah, blah, blah, blah.
Speaker:And I'm like, look.
Speaker:I don't try and convince people it's faster.

Speaker:I you can get faster.
Speaker:It's more about these situations where it's mission critical, right?

Speaker:miscellaneous kind of set fucky stuff.

Speaker:got a screen like of what it's meant to be and where you're meant to go.
Speaker:And when you're meant to dig and when you're too high and too low
Speaker:and everything, it just tells you.
Speaker:You could set out an asset of a pipe and be like,

Speaker:sensor don't
Speaker:like, well, so, so again, to give Daniel a plug, 'cause he's, he does it and you
Speaker:can do the same thing with Alec stuff.

Speaker:So he does design construct, he, he does design in plus spec.
Speaker:He pulls out a plus spec, like literally just a layer, puts it
Speaker:into the set out station, tablet,

Speaker:not that hard to sort of start using it and getting into it.

Speaker:architect space, the most relevant stuff talk about is the measure ups.
Speaker:So whether it's that commercial camera that gets you like super accurate sort
Speaker:of models and floor plans of whatever, um, building you're fitting out.

Speaker:this sort of like digital construction technology as an extension to their
Speaker:education, not as a replacement of
Speaker:that, but that'd be a great, like, hey, four week course.

Speaker:Even for us and like our team, like go do the digital construction costs.
