Human Design 101 - Terminology

Understanding Human Design can often feel like learning a whole new language. This episode of Unjaded guides listeners through the basic terminology and concepts of Human Design so that you can gain a deeper understanding of your own unique Human Design.

For those venturing into Human Design for the first time, this episode offers a welcoming entry point. Discover your design, embrace your individuality, and learn to navigate life according to your authentic self.

What You’ll Learn:

There are 5 Human Design Types

Generators make up 37% of the population.

Manifesting Generators make up 33% of the population.

Projectors make up 20% of the population.

Manifestors make up 9% of the population.

Reflectors make up 1% of the population.

Each Type Has It’s Own Strategy

  • Generators and Manifesting Generators respond.
  • Projectors wait to be invited.
  • Manifestors initiate.
  • Reflectors sample other auras.

There Are 7 Inner Authorities

  • Generators & Manifesting Generators will have either Sacral or Emotional Authority.
  • Projectors will have either Splenic, Self, Mental or Ego Projected Authority.
  • Manifestors will have either Sacral, Ego, or Emotional Authority.
  • Reflectors have no Inner Authority. They are lunar beings who follow the cycle of the moon.

Your Inner Authority is how you’re designed to make decisions.

Centres

  • There are nine centres in the Human Design body graph, each associated with specific aspects of an individual's life.
  • If you’re familiar with the chakra system, you’ll see that they follow this pattern.
  • If a centre is white it is undefined or open.
  • If a centre is coloured in, it is defined.
  • Defined centres are who you are here to be. They are the energy that you hold all the time.
  • Undefined centres are where your lessons live. Your energy is variable here, based on who you’re with. You are here to be wise about the energies in these centres. 


Profiles

  • Your profile is made up of the number after the decimal on the top two gates on both sides of your chart (your conscious and unconscious sun and earth).
  • There are 12 profiles.
  • Your profile is the role you play in your life. Think of it as your character in the story of your life. It’s a big part of how you show up in the world.
  • You can find your profile by looking at these numbers after the decimal. The black (right) side will be listed first, followed by the red side.


Gates

  • There are 64 Gates in the Human Design system. They’re taken from the i-ching and hold the same messages (more or less).
  • On either side of your Human Design Chart, you’ll see a set of numbers.
  • The red numbers (on the left side of your chart) represent your unconscious programming. They’re said to live in your body, where you may not be as aware of them.
  • The black numbers (on the right side of your chart) represent your conscious programming. You’ll most likely identify very easily with these themes.
  • Gates that have a coloured in circle around them in your chart are defined. When a gate is defined in a coloured in centre, you have access to that energy all the time.
  • Gates that don’t have any colour around them are undefined. When a gate is defined in an undefined centre, you’ll access that energy when you’re with someone who has the centre or the opposite gate defined.


Astrology

  • The symbols along the sides of your chart represent the planets.
  • The numbers beside these symbols represent the gate that the particular planet highlighted at the time of your birth on the right side and 88 days before your birth on the left side.
  • Each planet carries its’ own significance:
  • Sun - who you’re here to be
  • Earth - what grounds you
  • North Node - what you’re moving towards that will challenge you
  • South Node - your natural genius
  • Moon - what drives you
  • Mercury - how or what you communicate
  • Venus - your relationship themes
  • Mars - how you do what you do - your vocation - your core wound
  • Jupiter - your blessings
  • Saturn - your greatest challenge
  • Uranus - where you can expect the unexpected
  • Neptune - your spiritual purpose
  • Pluto - your generational patterns and imprinting


Channels

  • There are 36 Channels in the Human Design system.
  • Channels are formed when 2 gates on either side meet to join 2 defined centres.
  • They influence an individual's behavior and energy.


Circuitry Types

  • Each of the 36 Channels fall into 1 of these 4 circuits.
  • Circuitry is the energy that is consistent in your design. It’s how you do everything you do - the background frequency or circuit board of your life. Your electrical panel if you will.
  • Individual Circuitry - a design of following your own path, regardless of anything else.
  • Integration Circuitry - a design of personal survival
  • Collective Circuitry - a design of sharing with the whole - the collective
  • Tribal Circuitry - a design of caring for the tribe.


Grab your printed chart. Next - highlight your Type, Strategy, Authority, and Profile so that you can begin to commit it to memory. Label the Centres on your own chart and notice what’s defined vs undefined.

That’s it. Take a good look at it and then let it go for a while.

In ego projected authority, or ego authority, these are based on the will center or the ego center in human design, and the will center is all about resources. So basically, you know, if you're a projector and you have ego projected authority, you're going to wait for the invitation, be invited in and then you're going to be doing a check to make sure that the resources are in place for you. And that may be that the recognition is in place along with the resources, manifest errs, who have ego authority, it's like they can initiate, right, so it's like, boom, once they know that there is they're well resourced to do the thing that they're about to do, they're good to go. And we already talked about reflectors, having no inner authority waiting out the cycle of the moon. Again, your inner authority will be listed on your human design chart. It's how you're designed to make decision. So centers all of the little shapes on the Human Design body graph, there are nine of them. Those are called centers in human design. And if you're familiar with the chakra system, you'll kind of see that they follow this pattern with a couple of extra centers. So the head center will grow, we're going to start at the top and go down the head Center is all about inspiration, ideas, questions and answers. Lots of fun stuff lives there. The ajna center is the next center down the head center will be colored in yellow, if it is defined, and white. If it is undefined, actually all of your centers will be white if they are undefined. And there's no good or bad I'm going to talk about what definition means in a minute. But if your head center is colored, and it will be yellow, if your ajna center, think of it as where the Third Eye lives or the mind. If it is defined for you. It is colored in green and most systems, if it's undefined, it will be white. This is where decision certainty clarity all live in this Aashna center frameworks memorization, things like that live in this center. The throat center is the next center down if it's defined, it is a square if it's defined, it will be colored in brown. And it is a center for manifestation. So but don't think of manifestation like, like, I'm going to manifest a million dollars or a six figure business. manifestation in human design is all about action. It's where your voice lives, of course, but it's all about action and getting things started. If you have an undefined throat or a white throat center and your human design, then recognition is going to be really important for you whether you're a projector or you could be a generator with an undefined throat recognition is going to be important for you. And that doesn't mean stroking your ego like so many of my clients think when they come in, it means like people will actually recognize the things that you're good at, and it will draw it out of you. And then you're better able to get something started. The G center is the next center down, it's the diamond shape. It is the G center or the identity center in human design. And this is your sense of self. If it's defined for you, it'll be colored in yellow, and if it's undefined, it will be white. And this is where identity lives lovability. And direction. The will or the ego center is the tiny triangle that's off to the right of that G center, if it's defined for you will be colored in pink or red. It is a center that only about 1/8 of the population has defined. So it's pretty rare to have this defined. And it's actually willpower willpower lives here. So if you have this white in your chart undefined in your chart, and you have no willpower. You have no willpower. Congrats. Yes, that's right, you're absolutely right. So quit trying to beat yourself up for not having willpower because it's not something that you're designed to have. The wheel center is all about self worth and value and needing to prove yourself the sacral center we're gonna go back down to the middle the sacral center is the second box from the bottom and it will be colored in red or pink if it is defined for you if it's defined for you, you are a generator or manifesting generator. The sacral Center is an motor that operates in response. So it's where sexuality lifeforce workforce energy lifts, the root center is the last center at the bottom it is colored in brown if it's defined for you white if it's undefined, and it is about drive and ambition. Adrenaline lives there. There's a lot of pressure in the root center. And actually I didn't say that about the head center. The head Center is a pressure center as well. But adrenaline pressure lives in the root center it's often referred to as the business center in human design. We're gonna go back up to the right we have the emotional solar plexus which we talked about with emotional authority. It will be colored in brown if it's defined for you 53% of the population has it defined and if it's defined it is your inner authority you need to wait to make decisions for feelings creativity and emotional waves live in this part of your design. And then going over to the far left, we have the spleen center, and the spleen is the oldest awareness center. And it's all about fear intuition and your immune system lives in the spleen. So when a center is defined or colored in, that is accent that is energy that you have access to all the time, it's who you are, when centers are white, or undefined. That's where your lessons live, your energy is variable here based on who you're with, based on the transits that are going through the system, the solar system, your Your opportunity is to be wise about the messages of your open centers. If you have a business, it's often said that we sell from this openness, because we're here to be wise so we can share with others how, how to be wise about those areas, we can share our wisdom in those areas of our business, you'll get the most conditioning in your openness, that doesn't mean that you cannot be defined as I'm sorry. You'll be most conditioned in your openness and your open centers. But that doesn't mean that you can't be conditioned in your defined centers. I work with a lot of women who have a defined wheel center. And I say this as one of the most conditioned places in the Human Design body graph. It is crazy how these women are supposed to be standing in their power and who have willpower and assertiveness and authority. And they cannot stay in it because they've always been led to believe that they need to be small or they've been conditioned to play small. So that's not to say you can't be to sit. That's not to say you can't be conditioned in your defined centres, it's just that you will typically have more conditioning in your openness. Okay, so remember, head on over to the website, Vickie dickson.com, put your birth information and look for the gold button, click on that and download your chart. And it can be a really good idea to label these centers for yourself so that then when you're listening to the unjaded podcast or other human design information, you have it in front of you. Let's move on to your profile, your profile will be listed on your chart, it's two numbers. So it might be 243546. There's 12 combinations, your profile is made up of the number after the decimal point on the top two gates on both the left side and the right side of your chart, the right side will be first then the left side. The right side is your conscious design. What you are most aware of the left side is your unconscious unconscious design, the energy that you came here with, that you may not be as aware of. But the profile is the role that you play in in your life. It's the character that you play in the story of your life. And it's a big part of how you show up in the world. And I'm going to link a blog post in the show notes for you so that you can go and read about your profile specifically, we definitely need to get some some episodes out that are going over this, but it will be listed where your type authority and strategy are. What are gates, there are 64 gates in the Human Design System and they're taken from the eaching, they hold the same messages more or less. Now if you have a copy of the E Ching like I do, you'll see that the languaging is really a little bit bizarre it takes a little bit to get onto but it's still a beautiful text to have to refer to especially for your own gates. So 64 gates in the Human Design System. And on either side of your chart, you see a set of numbers. Like I said, the block numbers are you're conscious, and the red numbers are your unconscious. The numbers represent the gate that that particular planet was transiting at the time of your birth on the black side on the red side at about 80 days before your birth. So we're not going to worry about the decimal point after it but the the main number is the number of the gate. And the symbols down along the either side are astrological symbols. So we have the sun the Earth, the North Node, which isn't a planet it's a note of the moon, the south node again note of the moon, the moon, Mercury, Venus Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, your chart may or may not list Chiron which is not a planet it is an asteroid, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto that's most often how the order that they're going to be in. So what the gates or what the numbers represent is what energy the planet was highlighting at the time of your birth or ADA days before your birth. Your sun represents who you're here to be. Your earth represents what grounds you your north node is what you're moving towards in life these this is The thing that will often challenge you, your south node represents your natural genius. Your moon represents what drives you. Your Mercury represents how or what you're here to communicate. Your Venus represents your relationship theme. Your Mars represents.

How you do what you do, it can be your vocation, it's also your core wound. Jupiter represents your blessings. Saturn is like the barbed wire of your life. It's that thing that keeps challenging you over and over and over again, you're gonna go through to Saturn two to three Saturn returns in your life where you're going to get opportunities to work deeper through this. Uranus is where you can expect the unexpected. It's where you're different from everyone else. Your Neptune is your spiritual purpose and Pluto is generational patterns are imprinting. So in your chart, the gates that are colored and so they're they're black on most charts, but the gates that are colored in with a little circle around them, those are defined for you. They're also listed on either side of your chart. AND gates that don't have any color around them are undefined. When when a gate is defined in a defined center. So when it colored in gate is in a colored in center, you have access to that energy all the time, when a gate is defined colored, and in an undefined or white center, you have access to that energy when you're with someone who has that center or when the opposite gait of that one is defined it but it's not going to be super consistent for you. And most often that energy is going to play out in relationships, channels. So you'll see lines on your chart black and red lines. And you may be thinking like oh my god, what is all of this about these are channels. There are 36 channels in the Human Design System. And they're formed when two gates on either side meet up. And that joins to define centers and there are specific energies that go with each channel. And that energy is it's like the circuitry that you bring, it's like the like the electrical box of your body graph of your human design, it's not ever going to change. It just is who you are. It's how you show up in life. And there are different like there's individual channels, tribal channels, collective channels, integration channels, and that will give you a different kind of circuitry than someone else.

So individual search circuitry is a lot about following your own path, regardless of anything else that's going on around you. Integration circuitry is a design of personal survival. Collective circuitry is a design of sharing with the whole or the collective and tribal circuitry as a design of caring for your specific tribe. Now, most people are going to have a combination of these energies in their design of the circuits in their design. And that can create a little bit of friction in your design. There are some people who have just one kind of channel, though, which are one kind of circuitry, which makes it I think, maybe a little bit more, they have a little bit more consistent access to feeling like they're on purpose with that energy in their life. So that's the highlight reel. I know that was a lot of technical terminology. But the point is so that you can sit down with your own chart, and you can look at the places that these things live in your chart. And then when you're following along with the unjaded podcast every week, you'll be able to say, oh, that's what a gate is. Oh, that's what Mercury is. Oh, that's what a defined center is, oh, my will is undefined. So this is what it means. And again, I really invite you to give yourself grace, because it takes a while human design is not something that comes easily. And it's not something that you need to learn a whole system of right? You don't need to know everything there is to know about human design, although that would be lovely. I don't think it ever happens for any of us. But really, it's it's an opportunity to know yourself through your human design. So even if you can get a little bit of clarity on the parts of your design that make you you that will go a long way to making you feel more comfortable to actually Living by Design to actually using your human design to make your life easier as you go along to show up and be more of yourself because that's what we need from you. We need you to be all of you. Because you're a one time cosmic event.
