Welcome to episode 112 of Mind Power Meets Mystic!
This is Michelle Walters coming to you solo today. Cinthia Varkevisser has a much-deserved day off. I am the mind power of Mind Power Meets Mystic — a clinical hypnotherapist and business coach. Cinthia is our mystic and she's off mysticizing somewhere. So, you get me this week.
Today, I’m going to talk about hypnosis and, more specifically, the power of hypnosis for life transitions. We all go through life transitions—some of us go through a lot of them—and hypnosis can be an extremely powerful tool for helping us cope with all that change. It can help when you don’t know what to do with all the new stuff going on.
I’ve personally gone through a ton of transitions. Some of them I leaned into hypnosis for help, while others I had to cope with without it. Truth be told, I was helped a lot by my previous teacher and confidant, Karen Gresham, who passed away a couple of years ago but played an important role in my life and helped me navigate several significant transitions.
For those of you who don’t know much about me, I’m an American citizen. I’ve spent most of my life in the U.S., although I’ve traveled quite a bit and have done some work overseas. I’ve had many moves around the U.S.—I’ve lived in Seattle, California, and Dallas. I’ve had two life partners so far, and who knows, maybe more to come. I’ve had umpteen jobs. I worked in digital marketing for a long time, and because of the nature of that field, I was always changing jobs. In fact, I wrote a book about it. My book is called An Alignment of Spirit: Finding Work You Love. If you're interested in manifesting and learning about the science and my stories behind it, pick up a copy! It’s available on Amazon and wherever great books are sold.
Now, let’s dive into today’s topic: Transitions and why they can be so hard.
What makes transitions so difficult? Well, it’s no surprise—uncertainty and the fear of the unknown. As humans, we’re wired to stay in our comfort zones. We don’t want things to change. But life happens. You may need to move, find love (which can be exciting), lose love (which can be heartbreaking), or maybe start a new job, and all of that brings its own challenges.
Some of the transition work happens consciously. For instance, when you move, you’re thinking about things like, “Where’s the new house? Where’s the new grocery store? Where’s the nearest gas station?” But other aspects of the transition happen on a deeper level. Questions like, "Why did the relationship need to end?" or "Am I confident enough for this new job?" Those kinds of thoughts are happening below the surface, and that’s where hypnosis can really help.
I’ve worked with a variety of clients navigating different kinds of transitions. I’d like to share a few examples of how I’ve used hypnosis to help my clients through those transitions, without naming names, of course.
First example: Moving or relocating.
Hypnosis can be a powerful tool to tap into the subconscious and uncover fears or uncertainties that might affect the decision-making process. I had a client a few years ago who was living on the East Coast and was considering moving to Florida. She had some hesitation, but we were able to use hypnosis to help her access deeper emotional parts of herself to help guide her decision. In the end, she realized that, while she had some valid concerns, she could handle the relocation process and was empowered by the tools hypnosis gave her.
I’ve also worked with clients after a move that didn’t go quite as they expected. Hypnosis helped them adjust by amplifying their strengths and shifting their approach to the new situation, empowering them to embrace their new life.
Second example: Relationship transitions.
The most challenging transitions often come in the form of breakups—especially when they’re sudden and heartbreaking. I’ve had clients who struggled to cope with major breakups. Sometimes they knew why it ended, but other times, they didn’t fully understand. Hypnosis can help a person relax and view the situation from a new perspective—whether that’s realizing that the relationship wasn’t meant to be, or understanding that they stayed in it longer than they should have. Using hypnosis can also help release anger and emotional baggage, allowing someone to move on more smoothly.
Final example: Job transitions.
Getting or changing jobs can be extremely challenging. For some, it’s a graceful process, and for others, it’s much more difficult. As the labor market changes, the number of people navigating short-term jobs, project work, and gig work is on the rise. Transitions in the workplace need to be managed both consciously and unconsciously.
One of my clients was a realtor in the San Francisco Bay Area. He was struggling with confidence in his new job, so we used hypnosis to help him address his concerns and amplify his strengths. When combined with coaching, hypnosis was a powerful tool to help him navigate his transition.
I hope that this episode has given you some insights into how hypnosis can be used in different types of transitions. Whether you’re moving, experiencing a breakup, or shifting careers, hypnosis can be an incredible tool to help you manage the uncertainty and fear that come with change.
