[0:00] Hello, this is Sky. You're hearing my own voice, and I'll be here with you until sleep. You don't need to listen closely. You can drift off whenever you like. There's nothing to get right tonight. For now, just let yourself be held by the sound of my voice. Let's begin. If this podcast has been keeping you company at night and you'd like to support me directly, membership is a beautiful way to do that. It includes ad-free listening and exclusive sleep stories, and it helps me continue, sharing these calm little spaces with you. The link is in the description. You can let the words become softer in the background.
[1:21] Like the sound of rain against a window, or the distant rustling of leaves outside. Tonight, we're going to return to the manor house, and this time, we're going somewhere a little different, not into one of the grand rooms, Not the library or the ballroom or the map room And not into the greenhouse either Tonight, we're going to the conservatory.
[2:03] A room that sits somewhere between the house and the garden. A room made almost entirely of windows. A room where the outside world seems to come right up to the glass.
[2:23] And where the garden has somehow found a way to grow inside. So before we go anywhere, I invite you to take a moment to notice where you are right now. Perhaps you're already in bed. Perhaps you're lying beneath a blanket or resting against pillows or curled up somewhere comfortable. And maybe you don't need to change anything at all. Maybe your body has already found its own way to rest. So there's nothing to fix, nothing to accomplish, nothing you need to do well. You can simply be here. And if you notice your mind is still busy, Perhaps you can let it be busy. You don't have to make it quiet.
[3:34] If there are thoughts moving through, they can move through. If there's feelings, they can be here too. And if some part of you is tired, perhaps that part doesn't need to wait for the rest of you to catch up. It can simply begin to soften. You might notice the weight of your body against whatever's holding you. The mattress beneath you, the pillow beneath your head, a blanket across your body. Maybe you feel the places where your body is making contact with the bed. And perhaps you let yourself become a tiny bit heavier, not forcing yourself down, just allowing gravity to do what gravity does, holding you, supporting you, taking your way, and as you settle, you might imagine we're standing together outside the manor house. It's evening now. The day has quieted.
[5:01] The paths through the garden are dim beneath the trees. There's only a few traces of daylight remaining in the sky. Enough to see the outlines of the house, the dark shapes of the windows. And somewhere around the side of the house, there's a warm glow, a different kind of light. Not the golden light spilling from the drawing room window. This light is softer, greener. Because behind the glass, There are plants.
[5:46] Lots of them. The conservatory. And we begin walking toward it, slowly. There's no reason to hurry. The gravel beneath our feet makes a quiet sound as we walk. Maybe there's a faint scent of damp earth, leaves, grass. The garden after a long day and as we come closer to the conservatory the temperature seems to change, there's something inviting about the glowing glass room something that makes you want to pause before going inside, the door is an old wooden one painted many times over the years, the handle slightly worn, smooth where countless hands have touched it. And when you reach for it, you can feel the cool metal beneath your fingers. Maybe you notice the tiny movement of your hand, the turning of the handle.
[7:11] And then it opens. Warm air meets your face. And with it comes the scent of green things. Leaves. Moist soil. Something faintly floral. Something almost citrus-like. And for a moment, you simply stand in the doorway. Because the conservatory feels quite different from the greenhouse. The greenhouse belongs to the garden. This room belongs to the house, but it has invited the garden in. There's tiled floors beneath your feet.
[8:03] And above you, a high glass roof. The last light of evening comes through it, very softly. And all around, plants rise upward. Some tall, some almost tree-like, their leaves reaching toward the glass.
[8:27] There may be a slender palm in one corner, its fronds spreading outward like an umbrella. A great broad-leaved plant beside the window, leaves glossy in the light. Perhaps a fern hangs from somewhere above, the delicate fronds spilling down. And there's smaller plants, too, plants on stands. Plants in old ceramic pots. Plants gathered together in quiet little communities. The conservatory isn't neat in the way a drawing room might be. It has a kind of gentle abundance. Things growing, things reaching, things overlapping. And perhaps there's something comforting about that. Nothing here seems to be trying too hard The plants simply grow toward whatever light they can find.
[9:35] And you might notice There's a chair An old wicker chair Perhaps beside one of the windows A small cushion rests on it, The fabric slightly faded, and it looks as though someone has sat there many times.
