Positive affirmation are positive phrases or statements, used to challenge unhelpful or negative thoughts. These affirmative phrases, gives your self-esteem a positive boost; by affirming your self-worth via reflection on your core values and helps give a broader perspective of yourself.
There are 3 key ideas that underpins self-affirmation.These are:
Global narratives about ourselves, saying we are flexible, moral & capable of adapting to different circumstances. This makes up our self-identity(Cohen & Sherman, 2014).
Secondly, we just need to be competent and adequate in different areas, that we personally value in order to be moral, flexible and good. (Steele, 1988).
Lastly, we maintain self-integrity by acting in ways that authentically merit acknowledgement and praise. We say affirmations because we want to deserve praise for acting in ways that are consistent with that particular personal value.
"Self-Affirmation Theory" (Steele, 1988).
