Taylor Swift is about to make a fortune from her wedding without selling a single photo, and she does it by running her life like a premium brand. I don't call myself a Swiftie, but I've studied her as a businesswoman for years, and I think she's one of the sharpest marketers alive.
This is part 3 of my summer predictions series, and today I'm diving into Taylor Swift's business strategy and how you'd use the same premium positioning that keeps her untouchable to build your own personal brand.
Your story is your greatest asset, the one thing that's completely and utterly unique to you. Come and hear how to make it work like Taylor's does.
Mentioned in this episode:
She Sets The Standard
The room where women who are already extraordinary stop pretending you're available for anything less. Friday 13th November 2026 | Central London
[00:00:26] But that doesn't mean we always have to look at the luxury sector to understand what is happening next. This is something I am a big advocate for. When you look only at what is happening within your immediate niche, your competitor set, the people who are immediately around you, you will cap your thinking. You will see what is possible based on what somebody else has already created, and that is not what we are here for.
What Taylor Swift Teaches Us About Building A Premium Brand
[:[00:01:21] I am, of course, talking about Taylor Swift.
[:[00:01:41] Here you'll learn how to position like a luxury brand, attract clients you love to invest, and build wealth that lasts so you can create the business and life you want, not someone else's version of success. This is where premium positioning and building wealth meet for women who are rewriting the rules.
[:How Taylor Swift Built A Culture Of Belonging Around Her Music
[:[00:02:54] It makes people feel like they belong to her own story. And yes, we have the merchandise, the bracelets and the physical aspects that make you feel like you represent what Taylor is about. But she did that by pulling people into the culture of her world. So that is why I believe she is a phenomenal marketeer.
[:[00:03:42] Obviously I don't have complete insight into Taylor Swift's business and strategy, but from what I can see, she is very clever about how she is setting up not only her brand for the future, but how she thinks about controlling her story, the narrative of her life, so that she is always relevant.
The One Asset AI Can Never Replicate
And this is what I believe we are going to see more and more of. I have already touched on this if you have listened to this podcast for a while, about how your story is so important within the AI context that we live in.
[:[00:04:46] If you think about a really prominent experience in your life, and whenever I say this it always comes up that I think about when I got married, which is a good thing, right, that I haven't forgotten it happened. It was 10 years ago. If somebody says to me, "Oh, tell me about your wedding day," I will tell them about my wedding day, and it will be completely true to one person, and then I will tell somebody else who asks the same question, and it will be completely true, but it will have different nuances, because the emotion lives in that moment, and the emotion is what we tap back into when we are recounting the stories.
What Taylor Swift Did After Her Music Was Sold From Under Her
[:[00:05:58] I think this really came into play for her when she unfortunately had an experience where she lost it. When her music catalogue was sold, and then she recorded it all again, that was the wake up call. That was the moment she realised that everything she had created, every piece of emotion that went into that song, had been taken away from her.
[:[00:07:01] Obviously people who are approved, but who are going to film at the wedding. Whether she does a documentary or not, I don't know. There are so many rumours flying around at the point of recording of whether she will allow the rights, the footage, to go out there, or whether she won't, and ultimately she can just decide at the time, right?
[:Taylor Swift Has 300 Trademarks. Here Is What She Is Protecting.
[:[00:08:24] How does she make sure that she is the one in charge of her signature across everything? By signature, I don't mean her literal signing. I mean that everything that could be linked to Taylor Swift, everything that could be part of her story, she owns, and she has the right to monetise.
[:Why People Will Start To Commercialise Their Lived Experience
[:[00:09:46] That is often the way people commercialise these types of events. She is not going to sell it to Hello!, she is not going to sell it to People, she is not going to be on Good Morning America talking about the private details of her wedding. She is monetising this in a way that will make her so much money, so much money, and it will not seem like she has sold it at all.
[:[00:10:44] People are too savvy for that now. But if there are specific experiences you have lived through, for example if you are running your business and you have had a phenomenal outcome, like a massive launch or a big opportunity in the media, people want to know not only how you have done it, but who you have been as you have lived it. This is what building a personal brand really looks like now.
[:We Have Moved Out Of The Teaching Era
[:[00:12:05] I saw a post from somebody who is very successful in business, who said, "I think honesty is coming back again." And I thought, "When did it leave?" But I get her point that transparency, particularly in the online space, has not always been there. We are really coming back to "who do I want to learn from?"
[:[00:12:50] If you are able to share from what you have lived and what you have emotionally connected with in that experience, that is where credibility really comes from with AI around us.
Why People Will Pay to Go Behind the Scenes of Your Big Moments
So how I see this showing up, and I am starting to see it, is people doing short offers, micro offers that are built more around a life event they are going through.
[:[00:14:16] I think we are going to see more documentary type series. Some of the so-called big coaches I have seen have started to do this already, but it is still a little bit polished. What we are going to see is it coming through much more around what their decision making is. Not just "look at my life and look at my morning routine and how I spend my time during the day," but what is it that enables all of that to happen?
[:Write the Book, Then Use It to Get Everywhere
[:[00:15:43] If you publish a book, for example, then you use the book as a platform to go and say, "I want to be a guest on your podcast. This is what I talk about. This is what is in my book." But their story is not just how they share it across different platforms. It is you controlling the narrative of how much you share and how much you hold back.
[:The Taylor Swift Business Strategy Of Telling ‘Just Enough’
[:[00:17:18] So she is somebody who understands the power of story, but also understands the power of not telling everything. This is what the Taylor Swift business strategy really comes down to, and it is what we need to be careful of as we move into "share your story." This isn't about not being vulnerable, or being hyper aware of "oh, you can't say that, what will people think about me."
[:Why Stories Create Desire When Nothing Else Does
Stories create huge desire, huge desire. Stories activate a different part of our brain than any other form of communication. That is why when somebody says, "Oh, you went to a party, what was it like?" you might remember the conversation you had with somebody, or that so and so was so funny and this is what they did.
[:What Loro Piana And Patek Philippe Know About Premium Positioning That Most People Don’t
[:[00:18:46] Loro Piana is a beautiful high end premium brand, but they don't have huge PR based on where the brand is at. The story of that brand is a lot of what you don't see and what you assume for yourself. Or if we think about Patek Philippe, the very luxury watchmaker, the line is that you never actually own a Patek Philippe, you merely look after it for the next generation.
[:How Taylor Swift Says So Little and Stays So Loved
[:[00:20:03] But in other ways she barely tells anything, because when she has created a sense of belonging, like a premium brand does, it creates a sense of identity and status and who the brand is for. Then those people project, they fill up the gaps in the story, and that means she can control it.
[:Start Treating Your Story As Your Most Valuable Asset
[:[00:21:06] Secondly, think about how you are controlling that story right now in a positive way. Are you leveraging it? Are you bringing people into it? Is there a way you could commercialise it? What are you doing in your business right now that you think is just you living your life, but that people are really interested in?
[:[00:21:50] So how can you create more of a lived experience in your story, rather than it being static and time bound in a social media post? If you are designing your business to be term time only, and I have a client who does that, whose business is term time only at 6 figures monthly, she has just sold out.
[:[00:22:32] "You need to take people inside this," because that is gold. Somebody who designed a highly successful, profitable business completely on her own terms, on when she works and how she works, and sells it out repeatedly. Wouldn't you want to join the offer? So again, the things you are normalising about your life, the things you think people are not interested in, are what people are crying out to connect with, that emotional piece of you. But think commercially about it.
Be More Like Taylor Swift
[:[00:23:52] Hopefully this sparked some ideas for you, or has got you thinking bigger about how you can use your story. Join me on the next episode, where I am going to be talking about what I call the off market growth strategy. I know that might sound suspect. It's not. I am going to be talking about how I have built multiple businesses for myself and with my clients by doing the things that social media never sees.
[:[00:24:50] See you next week.
