Most couples have a clear vision for their careers, finances, and home, and maybe even their kids. Far fewer have ever talked about a vision for the relationship itself. Without that conversation, a relationship can just drift forward instead of moving toward something you're both actually building.
Alastair shares something he's noticed across thirty years of this work: almost every couple has real answers to what they want their relationship to become, they've just never said those answers out loud to each other. This episode gives you a few simple questions to change that, things like what you'd like your relationship to feel like in five years, or what you're building together. The challenge is simple: ask your partner one of these questions today, listen with real curiosity, then share your own answer.

Speaker A:
What will your relationship look like in five years?
Speaker A:
Not in terms of your career or your finances or your living situation, but your relationship.
Speaker A:
How do you want to feel with your partner?
Speaker A:
What do you want to have built together?
Speaker A:
And what kind of couple do you actually want to be?
Speaker A:
Most couples haven't had this conversation recently.
Speaker A:
Some have never had it at all.
Speaker A:
But the absence of can mean your relationship is just drifting forward without any shared direction, which is a very different thing from building something intentionally.
Speaker A:
Hi, I'm Alastair Dues, and this is the daily Relationship Tips podcast.
Speaker A:
Every episode, I share simple, practical tools to help you and your partner feel close, connected, and genuinely in love again, one small habit at a time.
Speaker A:
Now, talking about the future isn't just useful for practical planning.
Speaker A:
It's actually one of the most connecting things two people can do.
Speaker A:
When you share your hopes for the relationship, what you want it to become, what you'd like to experience together, how you'd like to grow, you create this sense of shared direction that makes the relationship feel alive and purposeful, rather than just ongoing.
Speaker A:
That's what this conversation creates, a shared sense of where you're headed together.
Speaker A:
And in 30 years of doing this work, I've noticed something that shows up across almost every couple I've worked with.
Speaker A:
Most couples have a vision for the future, you know, for their careers, finances, home, and maybe even children.
Speaker A:
But very few have a shared vision for the future of their relationship itself.
Speaker A:
For example, what kind of couple do they want to be in five years?
Speaker A:
How do they want to feel with each other?
Speaker A:
What do they want to have built together beyond all the practical stuff?
Speaker A:
I've asked this question in hundreds of sessions, and almost every time, both people have answers, often surprisingly clear ones.
Speaker A:
But here's the thing.
Speaker A:
Almost every time, they've never actually shared those answers with each other.
Speaker A:
So their vision was there.
Speaker A:
It just never became a conversation.
Speaker A:
Two people in the same relationship, both quietly hoping for many of the same things without even knowing it.
Speaker A:
So here are some questions worth talking about.
Speaker A:
What's one positive change you could make to your relationship right now?
Speaker A:
And when could you actually make it?
Speaker A:
What goals do you want to share as a couple?
Speaker A:
How would you like your relationship to feel in five years?
Speaker A:
In 10?
Speaker A:
And perhaps most importantly, what does your ideal relationship actually look like?
Speaker A:
And what are you building toward?
Speaker A:
These aren't questions with right or wrong answers.
Speaker A:
They're questions that bring two people's inner pictures into the same room.
Speaker A:
So here's your challenge for today.
Speaker A:
Ask your partner one of these questions as a genuine conversation rather than some kind of task.
Speaker A:
Ask them something.
Speaker A:
What would you like our relationship to look like in five years?
Speaker A:
Then listen to their answer with real curiosity.
Speaker A:
Then share your own.
Speaker A:
Because couples who talk about the future regularly, they build a shared vision that becomes a genuine source of motivation and closeness.
Speaker A:
They're not just coexisting, they're building something.
Speaker A:
And both of them know what they're building and why.
Speaker A:
And that shared purpose, it's one of the most powerful ingredients of a lasting, vibrant relationship.
Speaker A:
