Do you ever feel like your podcast is too small to matter? The reality is that smaller shows hold the biggest advantage: intimacy. We break down why fewer listeners mean more connection, faster trust, and stronger influence. Instead of chasing downloads, we shift the focus to impact.
You’ll hear simple strategies that turn a micro-audience into loyal fans and even paying clients: ask for feedback, mention listeners by name, create one-page resources that solve real problems, and host small live sessions that build community. This is your starter playbook for transforming a handful of listeners into a thriving, engaged audience.

Hey, amplifiers, welcome back to the podcast
Troy Lacher:playbook. I hope that you've all been enjoying our episodes on
Troy Lacher:the best practices of podcasting, and they really do
Troy Lacher:appreciate those of you that keep coming back week after week
Troy Lacher:to learn more on how to amp up your podcasting journey. There
Troy Lacher:may not be a lot of you, but it's with heartfelt appreciation
Troy Lacher:that I see you keep coming back, which really brings me to my
Troy Lacher:topic today. Whether you're just starting out your podcasting
Troy Lacher:journey or you've been doing it for many years, we all start to
Troy Lacher:look at the big shows, you know, the ones hitting the crazy
Troy Lacher:download numbers, the Joe rogans, the Seth, godins and all
Troy Lacher:those other giants that we look up to, they are the ones that
Troy Lacher:are posting about milestones and getting press that we want, and
Troy Lacher:suddenly we're wondering, is this enough? Are we doing
Troy Lacher:enough? Is this worth it? But here's the truth, smaller
Troy Lacher:doesn't mean weaker. If you've got a fewer than 1000 downloads
Troy Lacher:per episode, you're not falling behind. You've actually got a
Troy Lacher:huge advantage. So the reason you can't compare yourself to
Troy Lacher:those giant shows is because they're not playing the same
Troy Lacher:game as you. These guys are built on big budgets, big teams
Troy Lacher:with big reach, and with that size comes distance. They can't
Troy Lacher:talk to every listener, they can't answer every email. They
Troy Lacher:can't make every episode feel personal, but you can. That's
Troy Lacher:the beauty of being small. You're speaking directly to the
Troy Lacher:people who care about what you're saying, and that's what
Troy Lacher:makes your show powerful. Those big numbers, they don't always
Troy Lacher:equal real success. Sure, we all want that number download to say
Troy Lacher:that we're hitting reaching so many people, but does reaching
Troy Lacher:so many people it really matter if they're not truly paying
Troy Lacher:attention, if we're influencing the journeys of a few, then
Troy Lacher:we're making the impact that is far more meaningful than chasing
Troy Lacher:numbers, because those Few aren't just listeners. Those are
Troy Lacher:the people whose lives, businesses or decisions are
Troy Lacher:being shaped by what you share, and that kind of impact is
Troy Lacher:lasting. A small audience gives you room to do things that big
Troy Lacher:shows simply can't you can build real trust because people feel
Troy Lacher:like you're talking straight to them. You can focus your content
Troy Lacher:so solve specific problems instead of watering it down for
Troy Lacher:a larger group, and you create real loyalty when listeners feel
Troy Lacher:connected, not just entertained, of course, they want both, but
Troy Lacher:connections more important. Think about it, even if a few
Troy Lacher:100 people are consistently listening and applying what you
Troy Lacher:share, that's huge. Those are the people who recommend you,
Troy Lacher:who will become clients, who bring others along. That's the
Troy Lacher:long term impact of this. And here's where it gets even more
Troy Lacher:interesting, if your audience is small and specific, so you've
Troy Lacher:got your niche, say, midlife entrepreneurs, first time real
Troy Lacher:estate investors, or wellness coaches, you can really lean
Troy Lacher:into that. They're not looking for the broad, generic advice.
Troy Lacher:They want content that speaks directly to their challenges.
Troy Lacher:That's where you can shine. By narrowing your focus, you're
Troy Lacher:making your podcast feel like it was made just for them, and when
Troy Lacher:people feel understood, they stick around. So how do we serve
Troy Lacher:these micro audiences? Well? Well, first off, ask for
Troy Lacher:feedback, use polls or emails and shape episodes around what
Troy Lacher:they want. Second, acknowledge your listeners. Mention them by
Troy Lacher:name. Thank them for the reviews. Highlight their wins
Troy Lacher:that they've shared with you. Third, create small extras. A
Troy Lacher:one page checklist tied to an episode can feel like a big
Troy Lacher:value add. So if you're giving specific information, give them
Troy Lacher:something downloadable, so that they don't need to come back in
Troy Lacher:and, you know, re listen to the podcast over and over to catch
Troy Lacher:everything you're saying. Give them a checklist. Build a
Troy Lacher:community, even a small Facebook group or a circle space keeps
Troy Lacher:that conversation going after the episode is over. Do live
Troy Lacher:sessions, 10 people on a zoom call can create stronger bonds
Troy Lacher:than 1000s of downloads ever could share the listener
Troy Lacher:stories. Make your show collaborative instead of a one
Troy Lacher:way, celebrate milestones together. Essentially your wins
Troy Lacher:are also their wins be trans. Parent share behind the scene
Troy Lacher:moments, the ups and the downs. People connect with the real,
Troy Lacher:not that polished look. Help them connect with each other.
Troy Lacher:Give them reasons to bond beyond just listening to you, and this
Troy Lacher:is where it all pays off. Loyal listeners. Don't just consume
Troy Lacher:your content. They act on it. They hire you, they recommend
Troy Lacher:you. They become the foundation for growth you can actually
Troy Lacher:sustain. That's the true fans idea in action. You don't need
Troy Lacher:millions of downloads. You need the right group of committed
Troy Lacher:people who believe in your message. So if you've been
Troy Lacher:looking at your stats and feeling discouraged, stop
Troy Lacher:comparing yourself to the Giants. That's not the path
Troy Lacher:you're on. Your job is to take care of the people who are
Troy Lacher:already showing up for you, because when you focus on
Troy Lacher:connection and loyalty, your podcast becomes more than just
Troy Lacher:another show, it becomes a trusted voice in someone's life,
Troy Lacher:and that's what really matters. So until next time, happy
Troy Lacher:podcasting.
