Host Nathan Shore:We're gonna summarize our thoughts on the month that was.
Host Nathan Shore:And after that, we're going to give out some awards for these three films and talk about some of the other films that we've seen this October and look into the future, what we're most looking forward to in November.
Host Nathan Shore:So we got a packed episode here tonight and let's get right to it.
Host Nathan Shore:So first of all, October, our gothic horror retrospective, was our retrospective this past month.
Host Nathan Shore:This was.
Host Nathan Shore:This was interesting.
Host Nathan Shore:This was fun.
Host Nathan Shore:And the movies we watched, we'll see.
Host Nathan Shore:We had Sweeney Todd, the Demon Barber of Fleet street from Tim Burton.
Host Nathan Shore: el Hart from alen Parker from: Host Nathan Shore: illermo del Toro, came out in: Host Nathan Shore:Any general thoughts on this retrospective to share?
Brianna Budworth:Good month.
Brianna Budworth:I liked it.
Sam Cole:It was a spooky month filled with spooktacular imagery.
Brianna Budworth:Yeah, I was into It.
Brianna Budworth:I thought it was.
Brianna Budworth:I thought it was really fun.
Brianna Budworth:You know, it was campy and fun.
Brianna Budworth:And, you know, I love to watch horror movies.
Brianna Budworth:I like everyone, especially love to watch them in October.
Brianna Budworth:And it was.
Brianna Budworth:It was fun to hone in on a specific niche of the horror genre.
Host Nathan Shore:Yeah, I like that.
Host Nathan Shore:Yeah, I had a good time with these two.
Host Nathan Shore:I will say that these.
Host Nathan Shore:These three films, to one of these, I did say I did give a pass to put into our vault, which was Sweeney Todd.
Host Nathan Shore:And I kind of.
Host Nathan Shore:This is funny to say I have had some regrets, I think, since that day.
Host Nathan Shore:I enjoyed these films.
Host Nathan Shore:I didn't love.
Host Nathan Shore:Love any of these three movies, but I think there were there parts of these that were really well made.
Host Nathan Shore:I did kind of make a little list of things that were common themes among these three films, which was interesting.
Host Nathan Shore:And I think these are just kind of happy accidents.
Host Nathan Shore:I was all three films.
Host Nathan Shore:I was very underwhelmed with the villains overarching plan, which is interesting.
Host Nathan Shore:I found the journey that our protagonists went on more interesting than the resolution of the.
Host Nathan Shore:Of these three films.
Host Nathan Shore:And all three films had characters who are haunted by their past, which I think was a cool theme.
Host Nathan Shore:And they all included a doomed romance, which was something that I did not expect in this.
Brianna Budworth:But so it's like anything else.
Brianna Budworth:Horror has its tropes.
Host Nathan Shore:Yeah.
Host Nathan Shore:So Gothic Horror Awards, we do this at the end of every month.
Host Nathan Shore:Looking back at our retrospective, we've got some new categories this month and some of our old favorites be I know you love.
Host Nathan Shore:So oh my gosh, let's get to it.
Host Nathan Shore:And we always love to do this.
Host Nathan Shore:You know, we always have like best villain.
Host Nathan Shore:But this one, we're changing it.
Host Nathan Shore:Our first category is most diabolical villain.
Host Nathan Shore:So we don't.
Host Nathan Shore:Are we gonna.
Host Nathan Shore:We never really figure out the order here, but do we wanna.
Host Nathan Shore:You got B.
Host Nathan Shore:Sure for it.
Host Nathan Shore:Yay.
Brianna Budworth:Most diabolical villain for me, Alan Rickman and Sweeney Todd.
Host Nathan Shore:Okay.
Brianna Budworth:Bad dude.
Brianna Budworth:Lust for this woman.
Brianna Budworth:So he sends the other guy to jail in Australia and then wants to marry her daughter.
Brianna Budworth:It's all bad.
Brianna Budworth:It's bad all the way down.
Host Nathan Shore:Okay, that's interesting because I actually found him to be the least diabolical villain in that movie.
Host Nathan Shore:At the end.
Brianna Budworth:You're not a woman.
Host Nathan Shore:Okay, that's true.
Host Nathan Shore:Should I go next or Sam, what do you say?
Sam Cole:Whatever you prefer, sir.
Host Nathan Shore:Okay, I'll go next because I also have a character from Sweetie Todd as the most diabolical villain.
Host Nathan Shore:And I gave it to Elena Bonham Carter for A portrayal of Nelly Lovett.
Host Nathan Shore:You know, there were a lot of options I could have gone with here, but Nelly is bad, Bad, bad, bad.
Host Nathan Shore:Her.
Host Nathan Shore:Her evil is chilling and bankrupt of any morality.
Brianna Budworth:Yeah.
Host Nathan Shore:She views people as pure ingredients, which makes her the most diabolical villain of them and sings about it.
Host Nathan Shore:Yeah, yeah.
Host Nathan Shore:So, yeah, that's why I went with her.
Brianna Budworth:Yeah, that's fair.
Host Nathan Shore:Sam, what do you got?
Sam Cole:I hear that.
Sam Cole:I'm loving the Sweeney Todd train.
Sam Cole:I would have to go with Alan Rickman as well, just because of how calculated everything he does is.
Sam Cole:He's just, you know, he separates Johnny Depp from his wife and he's just evil.
Sam Cole:And he's like.
Sam Cole:It's like the alternate universe of Snape or something like that.
Sam Cole:So I would have to go with Alan Rickman on that one.
Host Nathan Shore:Okay.
Brianna Budworth:Yeah.
Brianna Budworth:He's like, upside down Snape.
Sam Cole:He's a bad guy.
Host Nathan Shore:I like that.
Host Nathan Shore:Yeah.
Brianna Budworth:Yeah.
Host Nathan Shore:Very good.
Host Nathan Shore:All right, our next category is Most Scary Shocking Moment.
Brianna Budworth:Yeah, it's a little bit of a bummer, but Lisa Bonet's death in Angel Heart is the most shocked I've been by a movie in a while.
Brianna Budworth:So, yeah, it's an impactful visual.
Host Nathan Shore:Okay.
Host Nathan Shore:Yeah.
Host Nathan Shore:And I guess the next.
Host Nathan Shore:So none of these films I would classify as truly scary.
Host Nathan Shore:And I watched each of these movies by myself at night with the lights pretty dim.
Host Nathan Shore:There are certain films that, you know, I couldn't handle that in.
Host Nathan Shore:In that environment.
Host Nathan Shore:But that said, Angel Heart, despite not being a straightforward horror film and more of a detective noir throughout, this film gave me a constant sense of dread.
Host Nathan Shore:And the.
Host Nathan Shore:The imagery was haunting throughout, you know.
Host Nathan Shore:But I will say Lisa Benet in Mickey Rourke's sex scene, AKA Epiphany's death scene, was so haunting that it subverts our expectations of what this kind of scene could be.
Host Nathan Shore:It begins as seemingly a romantic encounter, but it takes a horrifying turn with grotesque imagery, blood pouring from the ceiling, coating their bodies.
Host Nathan Shore:It's like nothing I've ever seen in mainstream, mainstream cinema.
Host Nathan Shore:I'll say, yeah, I've seen some things, but this was shocking and horrifying.
Host Nathan Shore:So I give it.
Host Nathan Shore:I.
Host Nathan Shore:Same as you be, I give it the scene here.
Sam Cole:I hear that.
Sam Cole:For me, I was not truly shocked, but in terms of just pure, like, the scariest moment for me, which is sort of the best that I could think of, honestly, it was going to go to the Descent to Hell and Angel Heart.
Sam Cole:But I think for me, what topped it is the opening of Crimson Peak when the ghost comes into the child's bedroom and you see the shadow around the corner.
Sam Cole:I have literally had dreams like that.
Sam Cole:And it gets that nightmare feeling so on the nose and so accurate for me that I was immediately chilled.
Sam Cole:And for that opening scene, that's why I was excited to watch the rest of the movie, because I knew there was going to be more ghost stuff.
Sam Cole:And so I was like, deliciously like, oh, man, what's it going to be like next?
Sam Cole:Like, I was anticipating the fear.
Brianna Budworth:And good.
Brianna Budworth:Hallways.
Sam Cole:Yes, hallways.
Sam Cole:Oh, my God.
Sam Cole:Yeah.
Host Nathan Shore:Hallways are just spooky all.
Brianna Budworth:All the time.
Brianna Budworth:You got one behind you, Nathan.
Sam Cole:Audience.
Sam Cole:Audience to the audience.
Sam Cole:Google hat man.
Sam Cole:The hat man.
Sam Cole:A figure seen in dreams around the world.
Sam Cole:Universal dreams.
Sam Cole:I've seen him in my dreams.
Sam Cole:It's a phenomenon.
Sam Cole:It's a terrifying thing.
Sam Cole:Yeah.
Brianna Budworth:I'm writing this down.
Host Nathan Shore:Or don't.
Host Nathan Shore:Because your dreams.
Host Nathan Shore:I will not.
Host Nathan Shore:I don't need.
Host Nathan Shore:I don't need extra trauma to my sleep schedule.
Host Nathan Shore:We're going to move on to our third category, which is Best Death or Kill Me.
Brianna Budworth:For me, it's Mrs.
Brianna Budworth:Lovett just thrown into the furnace in a dance and a surprise.
Brianna Budworth:And I love that twist.
Host Nathan Shore:Yeah, I considered that one as well.
Host Nathan Shore:I was.
Host Nathan Shore:I actually.
Host Nathan Shore:I wrote that one down.
Host Nathan Shore:I crossed it out.
Brianna Budworth:Oh, who.
Brianna Budworth:Who topped it?
Host Nathan Shore:But I am going back to Sweeney Todd and I think I mentioned it in the episode because I didn't realize when I started watching it it was an R rated film.
Host Nathan Shore:And when the first death happens, it really surprised me.
Host Nathan Shore:And I love it when Johnny Depp bashes in Adolfo Pirelli's head in, who I think is brilliantly played by Sacha Baron Cohen, and then slits his throat.
Host Nathan Shore:And I was like, whoa, it's the first on screen murder.
Host Nathan Shore:It is brutal.
Host Nathan Shore:And I.
Host Nathan Shore:I think your pick is great.
Host Nathan Shore:B.
Host Nathan Shore:And I thought about going with that.
Host Nathan Shore:But yeah, something about that first kill that comes out of nowhere because I didn't know what I was in for.
Brianna Budworth:Yeah, there's a lot of good options.
Host Nathan Shore:And I think it's a great, very, just barbaric kill in that film.
Host Nathan Shore:So I went with that.
Brianna Budworth:I love it.
Sam Cole:Boy, there's so many.
Sam Cole:Sweeney Todd is so full of just excellent, brutal murders, I will say.
Sam Cole:You know, and it was really tough because I too, was going to go with her being thrown into the furnace in Sweeney Todd, especially because you can hear her yelling after she's on fire.
Sam Cole:It's really disturbing, I would say, for the sheer brutalness of it.
Sam Cole:I gotta go with Tom Hiddleston's knife to below the eye in Crimson Peak.
Sam Cole:Just because that is just a horrible death.
Sam Cole:Like to the point where you can see it like registers on him and then you can see him losing consciousness.
Sam Cole:It was like anatomically realistically brutal.
Sam Cole:I was like, oh God.
Sam Cole:So that one.
Sam Cole:I gotta go with that one.
Brianna Budworth:Yeah, that's a great choice too.
Host Nathan Shore:All right, good picks, good picks.
Host Nathan Shore:Okay, we are going to go on to our fourth category, our scene stealer award.
Host Nathan Shore:B.
Host Nathan Shore:What do you got?
Brianna Budworth:I have really enjoyed De Niro chewing at the set pieces a little bit.
Sam Cole:Yeah.
Brianna Budworth:Him with that hard boiled egg.
Brianna Budworth:Gross.
Host Nathan Shore:Yeah, that's a good.
Host Nathan Shore:That's a good.
Host Nathan Shore:Ah, that's not a bad pick.
Host Nathan Shore:Not a bad pick.
Host Nathan Shore:I will admit up until right before we started recording, I had no answer for this.
Host Nathan Shore:Do I have to pick somebody or can I pick something?
Host Nathan Shore:A thing?
Brianna Budworth:I think you can pick a thing.
Brianna Budworth:Yeah, we've done that before.
Host Nathan Shore:Because I'll be honest, I feel like the.
Host Nathan Shore:The supporting cast in these three movies, I was not bedazzled by a lot of it.
Host Nathan Shore:I think Robert De Niro is good in it, but he's really doing his thing.
Brianna Budworth:Yeah.
Host Nathan Shore:You know, and it wasn't like he didn't come in and just like blow me away with a performance.
Host Nathan Shore:He was just kind of doing it.
Host Nathan Shore:And there was nobody in Cruise and Peak that did that or really I don't know.
Host Nathan Shore:So.
Host Nathan Shore:Man, I don't know.
Host Nathan Shore:But I.
Host Nathan Shore:I think the set for Crimson Peak, the hour, the manor is such.
Host Nathan Shore:And I don't always like saying this, but it is a character in this movie and this movie would not be nearly of the quality that it is and I didn't have the highest regard for.
Host Nathan Shore:But it is such a great location and it was, I know was constructed specifically for this movie.
Host Nathan Shore:I think it was torn down right afterwards.
Host Nathan Shore:It.
Host Nathan Shore:It is one of the greatest set pieces ever for a film I've seen and I.
Host Nathan Shore:It's the only location of these three movies in one of the few that I've ever seen the film where I want to go there and I wish I could just explore that place and I would sleep there overnight totally if I could.
Host Nathan Shore:So I want to give it to the Elroid Manor, whatever it's called in.
Host Nathan Shore:In Crimson Peak.
Host Nathan Shore:That's the best I could do because I was not swept away by any of the supporting performances in these three movies.
Host Nathan Shore:I'm sorry, guys.
Sam Cole:So this might have to do with the fact that of who he is outside the movies, but I would have to go with Sacha Baron Cohen in Sweeney Todd when he has his musical number about shaving and he comes out of that tent.
Sam Cole:I mean, that was just a very, like.
Sam Cole:It was wink, wink.
Sam Cole:But it was a lot of fun.
Sam Cole:And I just.
Sam Cole:He just was like.
Sam Cole:I thought he was perfectly cast, and I just remember seeing that in the theater.
Sam Cole:And that was like a big, like.
Sam Cole:Ladies and gentlemen, Sacha Baron Cohen in a perfect moment and a perfect role in a Tim Burton movie.
Sam Cole:I just.
Sam Cole:That really stood out to me.
Brianna Budworth:Yeah.
Sam Cole:So I'd have to go with him.
Sam Cole:Yeah.
Brianna Budworth:He's so colorful in that movie.
Brianna Budworth:Everything is so desaturated, which is.
Brianna Budworth:I go back and forth on liking it or not liking it and being distracted by it, but he's so colorful.
Sam Cole:Yeah, he's.
Sam Cole:He's like a Jack.
Sam Cole:A Jack in the box of color, basically.
Brianna Budworth:Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
Host Nathan Shore:Okay, we're moving on to our fifth category.
Host Nathan Shore:And this is one that we have never done before because we've never had the opportunity to.
Host Nathan Shore:Because what a special treat we had with these three movies that had all these.
Brianna Budworth:It's another common theme.
Host Nathan Shore:Had a common theme of incest.
Host Nathan Shore:Yeah.
Host Nathan Shore:And B, you point out before this movie that even Sweeney Todd had a little bit of a tie in to it with Joanna and Alan Rickman.
Host Nathan Shore:I never even really put that together, but yeah.
Host Nathan Shore:What was the tie in again?
Brianna Budworth:Gross.
Brianna Budworth:He adopted her.
Host Nathan Shore:He adopted her and he's gonna marry.
Brianna Budworth:Her and wanted to marry her.
Brianna Budworth:That's the whole thing.
Host Nathan Shore:Wow.
Brianna Budworth:Gross.
Host Nathan Shore:We need.
Host Nathan Shore:Who knew that we were doing gothic horror incest movies?
Brianna Budworth:Gross.
Brianna Budworth:Who picked this?
Host Nathan Shore:So our award is best or worst incest.
Brianna Budworth:For me, it goes back to Angel Heart.
Brianna Budworth:The Lisa Bonet twist at the end.
Brianna Budworth:Zoinks.
Host Nathan Shore:Totally.
Host Nathan Shore:Yeah, totally.
Host Nathan Shore:I'm giving this to as well, Harry angel sleeping with his daughter, Epiphany Proudfoot.
Host Nathan Shore:No, number one, we actually get to see the incest on screen.
Host Nathan Shore:So points for that.
Host Nathan Shore:And it's kind of the most memorable move scene in the movie.
Host Nathan Shore:And when you find out that she's his daughter, it's a real Gafaw moment.
Host Nathan Shore:Whereas when you find out that Thomas and Lucille are sleeping together, I was kind of like, sure, that figures, you know, in.
Host Nathan Shore:In Crimson Peak.
Host Nathan Shore:So, yeah, this is totally Angel Heart for me as well, Sam.
Sam Cole:I totally hear that.
Sam Cole:I mean, that one is particularly gruesome.
Sam Cole:I would go with Alan Rickman and Joanna.
Sam Cole:Even though he doesn't actually, you know, engage in incest.
Sam Cole:Just the fact that he's trying to marry her and he's watching her through the keyhole in the door is the creepiest.
Sam Cole:And then that creepy song where he's trying to look his best for her and, like pretty women.
Sam Cole:Yeah.
Sam Cole:Like powder off his jacket.
Sam Cole:You're just like, oh, God, this disgusting bastard.
Sam Cole:So that really made an impression on me.
Sam Cole:Yeah.
Brianna Budworth:It is gross.
Brianna Budworth:He's so sad.
Sam Cole:I mean.
Host Nathan Shore:All right, all right, we're gonna move on to our 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6th category, which is.
Host Nathan Shore:This is our best haunted house favorite set.
Brianna Budworth:I think we know your answer, Nathan.
Host Nathan Shore:Maybe.
Brianna Budworth:Okay, mine is definitely Crimson Peak.
Brianna Budworth:I think it's gorgeous.
Brianna Budworth:It's interesting, it's dynamic.
Brianna Budworth:It changes as the movie goes on.
Brianna Budworth:I like a set where you can really dig into the corners of it and expect that someone has laid something there for you to find.
Brianna Budworth:So 100%.
Brianna Budworth:This feels the most lived in and richly textured of all the sets for me.
Host Nathan Shore:Yeah, agreed.
Host Nathan Shore:I think this is a great category because what I can say is that, you know, every one of these films has, I think, great production design and great set pieces.
Host Nathan Shore:And I want to say I thought this was going to be a tough choice because I sincerely do appreciate the look and design of Sweeney Todd and in Angel Heart.
Host Nathan Shore:I think every location that we go to is haunting, but it's got to go to Allerdale hall from Crimson Peak.
Host Nathan Shore:Like I just said a moment ago, for all those reasons, it's the framework of the movie I love about it.
Host Nathan Shore:It's not all about creating an eerie atmosphere.
Host Nathan Shore:Like I said, there's a sadness to it.
Host Nathan Shore:It's beautiful, decaying manner out when the moors is riding away.
Host Nathan Shore:It's got so much character.
Host Nathan Shore:And it's the one location, like I said, that I wish that I could visit.
Host Nathan Shore:Yeah, me too.
Sam Cole:I don't really feel like I have a choice because the Crimson Peak set is just on a level of its own.
Sam Cole:So it has to be that, by the laws of logic.
Sam Cole:But I'll give a shout out to the.
Sam Cole:I do like the Demon Barber of Fleet Streets.
Sam Cole:I like the upstairs, where his shaving room with the slanted windows and then the bakery below, then the basement and the dungeon.
Sam Cole:But the Crimson Peak set is just so damn memorable, it's hard to.
Sam Cole:I can't really say no to that.
Brianna Budworth:Yeah, sweet.
Brianna Budworth:And Todd's.
Brianna Budworth:That whole manor has the Dante.
Sam Cole:Yeah, exactly.
Brianna Budworth:But I really like.
Brianna Budworth:It was hard for me because I love the.
Brianna Budworth:The Louisiana piece of Angel Heart, but it's not really a set.
Brianna Budworth:It's just like, this journey that he takes.
Brianna Budworth:It is so.
Sam Cole:Well, Right.
Brianna Budworth:It was hard for me.
Brianna Budworth:Yeah.
Host Nathan Shore:I hear that we're gonna get to our seventh category.
Host Nathan Shore:Best spooky propped.
Brianna Budworth:There's good choices here.
Host Nathan Shore:Yeah.
Brianna Budworth:Gramophone.
Brianna Budworth:There's all kinds of stuff.
Brianna Budworth:I went back and forth on this because there's some really cool stuff with the voodoo.
Brianna Budworth:I did think maybe the chickens, but I landed with the razors because they're so iconic.
Brianna Budworth:They're.
Brianna Budworth:You know, I felt, Sam, the way you did about Crimson Peak.
Brianna Budworth:I'm like, these are just so.
Brianna Budworth:The thing, you know, just felt textbook.
Brianna Budworth:It was hard.
Brianna Budworth:It was like, oh, it has to be this.

Sam Cole:Because if I was using my razor, it would take a long time because I had a lot of beard to get rid of.

Host Nathan Shore:When I used to go to a barber and I've never had a straight edge shave, but they would do a straight edge around my sideburns, like, over my ears.
Host Nathan Shore:They would do, like, the shaving cream, and they do that around there.
Host Nathan Shore:It made me nervous, him kind of going just all around my ears and around in this area here around my.
Host Nathan Shore:It was.
Host Nathan Shore:It was odd.
Host Nathan Shore:I don't know if you ever had a straight edge shave before as well.
Sam Cole:I had the straight edge shave once, like, 20 years ago in this, like, really nice, like, barbershop.
Sam Cole:They were very, like, proper, and they referred to me as Mr.
Sam Cole:Cole.
Brianna Budworth:It's.
Sam Cole:That was fun.
Sam Cole:Yeah.
Brianna Budworth:It's the one thing that makes me.
Brianna Budworth:It's the only experience that I was ever like, man, I wish I was a man.
Brianna Budworth:And I could have that, because I.

Sam Cole:I'm happy to be a human.
Host Nathan Shore:Well, I guess it'd be to me for best spooky prop, so lots of options.
Host Nathan Shore:I'm gonna go with the elevator from Angel Heart.
Host Nathan Shore:It's.
Host Nathan Shore:I don't know so much A prop.
Host Nathan Shore:I mean, it could be a prop, could be a set piece.
Host Nathan Shore:I don't know, it doesn't matter.
Host Nathan Shore:But what I do know is that the imagery of the elevator is teased throughout the movie, creating, you know, this incredible sense of dread.
Host Nathan Shore:Where does it lead now?
Host Nathan Shore:It's one of those vintage manually operated cage style elevators commonly found in older buildings.
Host Nathan Shore:And it's always shot, you know, backlit, which is haunting.
Host Nathan Shore:But going to call it a prop because it's kind of used as in that in the service, as a prop.
Host Nathan Shore:So I love every time we get that imagery of the elevator in Angel Heart, it's a symbol of his madness, where he's going and it's.
Host Nathan Shore:I really, I love how it's used and it's very effective in Angel Heart.
Host Nathan Shore:So yeah, the elevator, yeah, it's a good call.
Sam Cole:I totally hear that.
Sam Cole:I found the elevator really terrify, like creepy.
Sam Cole:I too would have to go with the, with Sweeney Todd's razors because of how iconic they are.
Sam Cole:But they literally also have their own music cue.
Sam Cole:Like every time you see the razors, there's like music that accompanies it.
Sam Cole:So it's like it has its own.
Sam Cole:They have their own soundtrack.
Sam Cole:So I gotta go with the razors.
Sam Cole:And just.
Sam Cole:Cause he uses them so many times and you see them in a lot of close ups.
Sam Cole:It's like, it's essential to his.
Sam Cole:It's an extension of his being.
Sam Cole:The razors are very like character oriented.
Brianna Budworth:Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Host Nathan Shore:An extension of his arm, as we know in the story.
Brianna Budworth:Edward Scissorhands, you know.
Host Nathan Shore:All right, our eighth category, favorite twist ending.
Host Nathan Shore:And each one of these does have a little, you know, attempts, at least attempts a twist ending.
Brianna Budworth:Yes.
Host Nathan Shore:B, what have you got?
Brianna Budworth:I think it.
Brianna Budworth:Just because it's the twistiest, it has to go to Todd.
Brianna Budworth:The other two, I don't think hid their hand as well as Sweeney Todd.
Host Nathan Shore:I agree.
Host Nathan Shore:100.
Host Nathan Shore:It was a category that I considered a little bit, but I landed also on Sweeney Todd because it' one that I felt stuck.
Host Nathan Shore:The landing stuck.
Host Nathan Shore:The twist, it.
Host Nathan Shore:The twist came, you know, it came in from learning that the beggar woman is, you know, Todd's wife all along.
Host Nathan Shore:And in his madness, he slits her throat, kills her.
Host Nathan Shore:You know, I didn't see that coming at all.
Host Nathan Shore:I didn't know that's who she was.
Host Nathan Shore:I was caught off by this.
Host Nathan Shore:And whereas the other films, the twist was either telegraphed from the start or I don't think it was executed well.
Host Nathan Shore:So I agree.
Sam Cole:I would have to Go exactly the same.
Sam Cole:I have to go with Sweeney Todd as well, because it's a great twist, and it's also so painfully tragic that if he had just.
Sam Cole:If he had just altered course a little bit, he could have found her and, like, they could have had another chapter together in their lives.
Sam Cole:And, like, Helena Bonham Carter messed that all up for them.
Sam Cole:I do want to give a shout out.
Sam Cole:This is definitely not the best twist ending.
Sam Cole:I'm just trying to crowbar it in somewhere.
Sam Cole:Secondary shout out to the elevator, Descent to hell at the end of Angel Heart, because I just found that imagery and him arriving in the darkness of hell and being silhouetted.
Sam Cole:Not really a twist, but just.
Sam Cole:Man, that was scary.
Sam Cole:But Sweeney Todd twist ending.
Sam Cole:Absolutely.

Host Nathan Shore:There's a lot of allure to him.
Host Nathan Shore:The ladies would be swarming around us, you know?
Host Nathan Shore:You know, so, you know, what's eternal damnation for, you know, a fun night out on the town, you know, okay, I'll take the elevator ride.
Sam Cole:I would have to go with the.
Sam Cole:With Edith's father from Crimson Peak because he's an honorable gentleman, and he would be a good wingman.
Sam Cole:And if he sensed someone had, like, a shady character that I was dating, he'd be like, sam, I don't know about her.
Sam Cole:Like, you know, I just feel like I would just.
Sam Cole:He would be a good person to have at the.
Sam Cole:You know, as my wingman.
Sam Cole:Plus, I attend lots of upscale events, so I'd be right at home.
Sam Cole:Just kidding.

Host Nathan Shore:There are just the tiniest handful of characters across these movies that I could tolerate to be in the same room with, let alone share a confined space with, let alone, you know, unleash into a new world to repopulate the human race.
Host Nathan Shore:For instance, like Anthony and Joanna, you know, are some.
Host Nathan Shore:But honestly I didn't like them very much.
Sam Cole:They're kind of, they're sort of boring, you know.
Host Nathan Shore:Oh my God.
Host Nathan Shore:I.
Host Nathan Shore:First of all, in a, in a post apocalyptic world, they wouldn't stand a chance if they ran into like Lord Humongous.
Host Nathan Shore:They'd be dead.
Sam Cole:I feel this, I feel so bad saying that the actor who played what's Joanna's the, what's the kid's name in Sweeney Todd, the Jamie Campbell power.
Host Nathan Shore:I don't know.
Sam Cole:All right.
Sam Cole:To me he seems like in that movie he seems like a RISD student that like Tim Burton just like plucked out a class.
Sam Cole:And like you have really good facial expressions.
Sam Cole:Just look at the camera with like gawky eyes, you know, like gawky eyes.
Brianna Budworth:You guys are the worst.
Host Nathan Shore:So.
Host Nathan Shore:And the other two are like Edith, you know, played by Mia Wasakoska and her dad, Carter Cushing, you know, played by Jim Beaver, you know, both honest stand up people and just to but convention to prove I'm not going to just pick the young attractive female.
Host Nathan Shore:I'm going to save Carter Cushing because he has moral integrity, a moral compass, he's intelligent, he has leadership qualities and he's compassionate and caring and we need that for the future.
Sam Cole:I would have to say I would like to save Jessica Chastain's character because she, you know, as long as you're like really loyal to her, she'd keep me on my toes.
Sam Cole:And I find that kind of interesting.
Sam Cole:And it'd be, like, fun and kind of scary.
Sam Cole:So I'm all about inviting her and.
Sam Cole:Yeah, I'm scared for your life.
Brianna Budworth:I don't want to yuck anyone's yum here.
Brianna Budworth:You know.

Brianna Budworth:So I watched the first Terrifier.
Brianna Budworth:I really had a good time with it.
Brianna Budworth:So I'm excited for the second and the third.

Brianna Budworth:I know, Nathan, you've talked about it before, but that is just a very visually arresting movie and I'm so glad I was finally able to see it.

Sam Cole:I've seen 30 minutes of that and highly enjoyed it.
Sam Cole:Then I had to go, but you know that scene where he's, like, crawling around in a.
Sam Cole:In, like, a box, where it's like.

Sam Cole:And, oh, that overbearing person that he works for?
Sam Cole:I've been in that experience, and that was actually triggering for me.
Sam Cole:I was like, oh, my God, the memories, the memories.
Sam Cole:I was someone's assistant once, and I was like, no.
Host Nathan Shore:For people like myself and maybe other listeners, what is Problemistic?
Host Nathan Shore:Because I have no idea.
Brianna Budworth:Yeah, Problemista is a great movie, and it's directed by Julio Torres, and he stars in the movie as a young man who's working to get his visa, his green card, so that he can continue to work in the United States.
Brianna Budworth:And so he's sort of going from job to job and struggling under the system.
Brianna Budworth:It stars Tilda Swinton as his boss.
Brianna Budworth:We also get treated to seeing RZA in this movie, which is really fun.
Brianna Budworth:It has some of the most inventive visuals I've seen in a long time.
Brianna Budworth:It is totally playing with the medium.
Brianna Budworth:It's creative and playful and fun.
Brianna Budworth:And these are.
Brianna Budworth:If you followed Julio Torres for any amount of time.
Brianna Budworth:Those are adjectives that are easy to associate with him.
Brianna Budworth:So I would definitely give it a watch.

Sam Cole:This is not horror at all.
Sam Cole:It's not really in the season, but this past week, I was at the 25th anniversary of the Newport Beach Film Festival, and there was the world premiere of a movie directed by Simon west starring Christophe Waltz called Old Guy.
Sam Cole:And I saw that film and so premiered there.
Sam Cole:I think it's getting either a theatrical or streaming release.
Sam Cole: In the spring of: Sam Cole:He received an Icon award, gave a very, like, compelling speech.
Sam Cole:I really enjoyed the movie.
Sam Cole:It certainly does not, you know, break the mold.
Sam Cole:I mean, it has very typical tropes of he's an aging hitman and actually, oh, my God, Cooper Hoffman, Philip Seymour Hoffman's son, is the new cool young hitman.
Sam Cole:That's like, much better than Christoph Waltz.
Sam Cole:All shot in Northern Ireland.
Sam Cole:I actually really enjoyed the movie.
Sam Cole:I thought the characters were good, familiar territory.
Sam Cole:We've seen this plot before, but I just thought the characters were really interesting.
Sam Cole:I was enjoying it the whole time.
Sam Cole:I liked how the story unfolded and it was just.
Sam Cole:I mean, it was.
Sam Cole:I had a lot.
Sam Cole:It was a lot of fun to watch.
Sam Cole:So it's certainly not a Halloween.
Sam Cole:It's not seasonally appropriate, but wherever it comes out next year, I personally recommend it.
Sam Cole:I enjoyed it.
Sam Cole:And plus, no, I'll say really quick.
Sam Cole:Simon west, always.
Sam Cole:His direction was more like subdued and focused on characters.
Sam Cole:But he's so good with this over the top action like he did in Con Air.
Sam Cole:And so I was like, where's the.
Sam Cole:Where's his signature action?
Sam Cole:Of course, towards the middle and end, explosive action.
Sam Cole:I was like, there's the Simon west that I know.
Sam Cole:So it gave me that.
Sam Cole:What I wanted to see.
Host Nathan Shore:How was Cooper Hoffman in it?
Host Nathan Shore:Because I liked him a lot in Licorice Pizza, and I think that he has a lot of potential.
Sam Cole:I thought he was really, really good.
Sam Cole:And I think that it was a smart move for him to be in this movie because he's in a movie with Christoph Waltz, big star also.
Sam Cole:I think, however the movie does, you know, financially, I think that Cooper Hoffman is.
Sam Cole:Did a great job.
Sam Cole:And I think his decision was sort of bulletproof, meaning whatever happens to this movie, he's such a good actor that I think that he's going to continue to do other films.
Sam Cole:I did not.
Sam Cole:I recognize his name, but I didn't recognize him at first because the last time I saw him was in licorice pizza in 21 years ago.
Host Nathan Shore:And so.
Sam Cole:And he was like 17.
Sam Cole:Now he's like early 20s.
Sam Cole:Like he looked different but like I was just cool.
Sam Cole:I'm like, oh, cool.
Sam Cole:He's in another movie.
Sam Cole:Like he.
Sam Cole:I think he's going to be.
Sam Cole:I think he's going to be around for a while and his acting was great, so I think we'll be seeing him a lot more.

Host Nathan Shore:I've taken you kind of an unconventional route to catching up on some horror films, seasonal films.
Host Nathan Shore: God's Mothra versus Godzilla: Host Nathan Shore:I mean every.
Host Nathan Shore:I go through the whole, weren't you.
Sam Cole:About to cancel Apple Plus?
Sam Cole:But then that awesome like Godzilla show came out on it or something.
Sam Cole:And then you're like, was that you or.
Host Nathan Shore:I did.
Sam Cole:I know it's like a year ago.
Host Nathan Shore:But yeah, I still have my Apple TV subscription and I don't watch a lot on it and I don't really know if I should keep it or not.
Host Nathan Shore:But as you, as I've mentioned maybe on the podcast before, I did get the Showa Error Criterion box set.
Host Nathan Shore:And I'm kind of going through it slowly.
Host Nathan Shore:I'm really milking these.
Host Nathan Shore:But I'm on to the fourth film in the franchise.
Host Nathan Shore:Mothra vs Godzilla is a very, very underrated film in that franchise.
Host Nathan Shore:It is the last time Godzilla is really a heel as a bad guy in for a long time.
Host Nathan Shore: t later on, maybe in Godzilla: Host Nathan Shore:But for this is the last time before he becomes like a kid, really kid friendly hero.
Host Nathan Shore:Right?
Host Nathan Shore:You know, everyone, he becomes like a cuddly, you know, stuffed animal after this.
Host Nathan Shore:And it's a really iconic, you know, Kaiju versus movie.
Host Nathan Shore:Right before this was King Kong versus Godzilla, which is the movie that a lot of people, you know, think of.
Host Nathan Shore:But it's nowhere near as good as this one.
Host Nathan Shore:It has got great special effects.
Host Nathan Shore:It's one of the best of the whole series when it comes to the suits that they made for this and the special effects that they made for this.
Host Nathan Shore:Not many people ask me about my opinions on Godzilla movies, but if I had to point to one from this era that is not the original Godzilla, I'd say this is definitely the top three of these show era films.
Host Nathan Shore:So it is a really good one.
Host Nathan Shore:It's one of my favorites now Nathan, had you.
Brianna Budworth:You've seen that before, I imagine.
Host Nathan Shore:I've seen every Godzilla movie several times.
Host Nathan Shore:Not all of them more than like three times old, but a lot of them.
Host Nathan Shore:Many times, like 10 times or more.
Host Nathan Shore:But this is one of my favorites.
Brianna Budworth:Okay.
Host Nathan Shore:Another one that I saw.
Host Nathan Shore:I'll probably.
Host Nathan Shore:This last one, I'll think I'll mention I caught up with Lisa Frankenstein.
Host Nathan Shore:B.
Host Nathan Shore:I think you've seen this.
Brianna Budworth:Did you like it?
Host Nathan Shore:Oh, my God.
Host Nathan Shore:This was so much fun.
Host Nathan Shore:Fun and this science.
Host Nathan Shore:This was last night.
Host Nathan Shore:I'm like, I just got to throw something on.
Host Nathan Shore:It's a 98 minute movie.
Host Nathan Shore:I wanted to just catch up on something seasonal.
Host Nathan Shore:This was so much fun.
Host Nathan Shore:It was funny and it reminded me a little bit of a movie from maybe 10 years ago called Dead, I think Warm Bodies.
Host Nathan Shore:This was so much better, though.
Host Nathan Shore: And it takes place in: Host Nathan Shore:Many times.
Host Nathan Shore:Movies that are trying to, like, put itself in a.
Host Nathan Shore:Especially in the 80s.
Host Nathan Shore:It's really overdoing the 80s of it.
Host Nathan Shore:But for some reason this movie was so smart about it.
Host Nathan Shore:And it's being very.
Host Nathan Shore:It's referencing the 80s, but it's one of the best scripts I've read.
Host Nathan Shore:And I think it's Diablo Cody, who sometimes is not everyone's jam.
Host Nathan Shore:I get that.
Host Nathan Shore:But this was so much fun.
Host Nathan Shore:I don't usually laugh out loud by myself at comedies, but I almost woke up my household laughing at this movie.
Host Nathan Shore:It was just a blast.
Brianna Budworth:Yeah.
Host Nathan Shore:So, yeah, I'm glad you liked it.
Brianna Budworth:I think it's really fun.
Host Nathan Shore:Just.
Host Nathan Shore:Just the craziest, obscure.
Host Nathan Shore:What is that?
Host Nathan Shore:It's not going for the lowbrow, like.
Host Nathan Shore:Like low hanging fruit comedy that everybody can think of from the 80s.
Host Nathan Shore:It's making the most obscure references to like, Days of Our Lives characters to just the things that, like, oh, I remember that.
Host Nathan Shore:But probably nine out of ten people might not have picked up on that joke from the 80s, but a small group of people would.
Host Nathan Shore:There's a great joke about the Cure in it.
Host Nathan Shore:Not joke, but like.
Host Nathan Shore:Like the character who comes back to life starts listening to a Cure record and the character says, you know, the Cure won't cure you, but it will cure.
Host Nathan Shore:It will cure you in here or something like that.
Host Nathan Shore:And I don't know, the way it was just delivered just had to be cracking up because, like, this was like.
Host Nathan Shore: I remember living through: Host Nathan Shore:And it was.
Host Nathan Shore:It just tickled me, this movie.
Brianna Budworth:And I thought the Pabst joke was hilarious.
Host Nathan Shore:The what joke?
Brianna Budworth:The Pabst joke.
Host Nathan Shore:I was like, yes, the Paps.
Host Nathan Shore:Yes.
Host Nathan Shore:I.
Host Nathan Shore:I really, I recommend this movie highly.
Host Nathan Shore:I'm sad that this did not, you know, was not a bigger hit in the box office.
Host Nathan Shore:I.
Host Nathan Shore:I hope that this movie gets discovered.
Host Nathan Shore:You know, one time I think it should.
Host Nathan Shore:It was really good.
Host Nathan Shore:So, yeah, I think I'll leave it there.
Host Nathan Shore:Yeah.
Host Nathan Shore:All right.
Host Nathan Shore:So it's getting a little late, but I just want to see.
Host Nathan Shore:Is there anything this month coming up in November that we're excited for?
Host Nathan Shore:I can look at our list here.
Host Nathan Shore:There is at least one movie that we all share, something that we're all excited for.
Brianna Budworth:Does it have Denzel Washington?
Host Nathan Shore:Has Denzel Washington, Paul Mescal in it?
Host Nathan Shore:And yes, it's Gladiator 2.
Sam Cole:I'm of like, you know, no surprises here.
Sam Cole:Of course I'm excited for that.
Sam Cole:But one thing that I have a.
Sam Cole:Now I don't know, but I have a feeling it might do really well.
Sam Cole:And this is just a small indicator, but when I went and saw Megalopolis at the Men's Chinese Theater, the audience, a lot of them was like 18 to 22 year olds.
Sam Cole:And there was a Gladiator 2 trailer.
Sam Cole:And no, all the young people cheered for it.
Sam Cole:And I was surprised.
Sam Cole:I was like, wow.
Sam Cole:I was like, I didn't know that you guys would be interested in a sequel to something that's like 24 years old.
Brianna Budworth:Marketing spin.
Brianna Budworth:Incredible.
Sam Cole:Yeah.
Brianna Budworth:I think Gladiator holds up for two reasons.
Brianna Budworth:One, it's just a great movie and.
Sam Cole:I think it's got to love it.
Brianna Budworth:Power.
Brianna Budworth:It's just a really good movie.
Brianna Budworth:And Ridley Scott keeps making movies, so if anyone wants to discover his films are going to find that.
Brianna Budworth:But I also think it's one of the last, like, TV movies.
Brianna Budworth:Like, if you are of an age where you grew up at home and cable was on, you might have just kind of seen Gladiator in pieces.
Sam Cole:The other thing, too, I love about Gladiator is like, I'm a huge Ridley Scott fan.
Sam Cole:As a visualist.
Sam Cole:I think we can all agree that, like, his visuals are always good and sometimes the stories in his movie, like the storytelling in his movies is a little muddled.
Sam Cole:Not all the time, but Gladiator has the visuals and the story is just crystal clear.
Sam Cole:It's like vengeance fall from grace.
Sam Cole:Like, it's so focused.
Sam Cole:It's simple.
Sam Cole:It's so simple, but it's like, gloriously simple.
Sam Cole:And so I just hope that this second one has a similar narrative thrust and doesn't get lost in a lot of, like, gobbledygook.
Sam Cole:You know what I mean?
Host Nathan Shore:Like.
Sam Cole:Yeah, we'll see.
Sam Cole:Yeah, I agree.
Host Nathan Shore:Well, I'll admit, I.
Host Nathan Shore:Early on in the year, I could.
Host Nathan Shore:I didn't even put this on my top 10 most anticipated films because I was kind of skeptical the last two.
Sam Cole:Me too.
Sam Cole:Yeah.
Host Nathan Shore:Ridley Scott films.
Host Nathan Shore:I, you know, I was not crazy about Napoleon.
Host Nathan Shore:I thought the.
Host Nathan Shore:Was it the Duel?
Host Nathan Shore:I thought I was decent.
Host Nathan Shore:I didn't love it.
Host Nathan Shore:He has not made anything that I've been like, absolutely just bonkers over in a while.
Host Nathan Shore:And I was like, you, Sam?
Host Nathan Shore:I was kind of worried that it was going to be kind of a messy film.
Host Nathan Shore:And I.
Host Nathan Shore:I don't know.
Host Nathan Shore:I mean, I'm just.
Host Nathan Shore:I'm so in awe that.
Host Nathan Shore:Was he 84?
Host Nathan Shore:I don't know how old he is.
Host Nathan Shore:He's up there.
Sam Cole:Yeah.
Host Nathan Shore:He's 10.
Sam Cole:Yeah.
Host Nathan Shore:And can make such a large Spectacle movie at 84 and get this budget after he's had so many real financial flops for a long time.
Host Nathan Shore:I don't know what his last six, maybe the Martian was the last successful movie he's made that's been critically, commercially really super successful.
Sam Cole:Gucci was less successful.
Sam Cole:That did.
Sam Cole:That was.
Sam Cole:Did okay, but not.
Sam Cole:But Martian was big.
Brianna Budworth:Yeah, Martian was big.
Host Nathan Shore:That might have been.
Host Nathan Shore:That was almost 10 years ago.
Brianna Budworth:Yeah.
Sam Cole:Yeah.
Host Nathan Shore:So it's been a while.
Host Nathan Shore:And this is.
Host Nathan Shore:But when I saw a new trailer.
Host Nathan Shore:I haven't seen many trailers lately, but I saw a new trailer for it when I was at.
Host Nathan Shore:When I saw the.
Host Nathan Shore:When I saw Joker 2 last week and I got pumped for it, seeing that new trailer for it.
Host Nathan Shore:And I was like, yes, I am.
Host Nathan Shore:I'm in.
Host Nathan Shore:I am in.
Host Nathan Shore:So, yeah, I'm.
Host Nathan Shore:I am.
Sam Cole:His action and visuals are amazing.
Sam Cole:The energy of the action set pieces in his movie, it's like he's.
Sam Cole:Forever has the mentality of like a young director who's just like going for the huge visuals and the bang and stuff like that.
Sam Cole:I think he makes so many movies because I think he.
Sam Cole:He said this in an interview.
Sam Cole:He feels relaxed.
Sam Cole:He feels happiness and most relaxed when he's on a film set.
Sam Cole:It actually relaxes him.
Sam Cole:So I think he's a workhorse because he prefers doing that.
Sam Cole:I think it's the time in between movies where he's like, I.
Sam Cole:I gotta do another one.
Sam Cole:I'm just guessing I clear.
Sam Cole:I do not know him.
Sam Cole:But, like, I mean, I'm a huge fan.
Host Nathan Shore:You know how to stop.
Host Nathan Shore:Well, Gladiator 2 comes out November 22nd, just before Thanksgiving.
Host Nathan Shore:Can't wait.
Sam Cole:Do you guys have interest in the Robert Zemeckis here?
Sam Cole:I'm kind of looking forward to that.
Sam Cole:Just because I, I, you know, it's re.
Sam Cole:The two reunite, Tom Hanks reuniting with, you know, Robin Wright Penn and all that.
Sam Cole:Yeah.
Host Nathan Shore:I don't know.
Host Nathan Shore:I'll.
Host Nathan Shore:I'll just say quickly, I.
Host Nathan Shore:I've been kind of cool on Zemeckis in the last 10 years, you know.
Sam Cole:Well, me too.
Sam Cole:He hasn't.
Sam Cole:I.
Sam Cole:I love earlier Zemeck, the stuff he said, you know, like, what was the one with God, Steve Carell, you know, the Marlin man or Mar.
Host Nathan Shore:It was.
Sam Cole:That was all right.
Sam Cole:Welcome to Marwin.
Sam Cole:That was okay, but it was like.
Brianna Budworth:I have to tell you that Pinocchio made me more irate than movies usually do.
Brianna Budworth:I was so worked up about how much I hated Pinocchio.
Sam Cole:I could hear that.
Sam Cole:I haven't seen it.
Sam Cole:I think I'm interested in here just because, like, it's literally, for the most part, one camera angle the whole movie.
Sam Cole:Like, it's told from one shot, but it's about the family.
Sam Cole:But I saw in the trailer that it starts in that spot, like, a million years before the story starts.
Sam Cole:So you'll see, like, dinosaurs and, like, creatures walking around.
Sam Cole:And so I just.
Sam Cole:I just like that Robert Zemeckis always does really interesting visual, technical things, even in his lesser movies.
Sam Cole:So I'm like, what visuals does he have up his sleeve with this one?
Sam Cole:So that's kind of the hook for me.
Brianna Budworth:I'm interested in the performances, too, because I feel like he's kind of.
Brianna Budworth:He lets his actors kind of just do what their interpretation often.
Sam Cole:Yeah.
Brianna Budworth:And he's got a great cast here.
Brianna Budworth:Like, I love Robin Wright.
Brianna Budworth:I'm excited for that.
Brianna Budworth:I love that she's had a bit of a renaissance in the last 10 years.
Brianna Budworth:So.
Brianna Budworth:Yeah.

Host Nathan Shore:I haven't seen Paul Bettany in some.
Brianna Budworth:Since the Johnny Depp trial.

Sam Cole:I know Paul Betney was like, when he was in Solo, that Ron Howard took over direct, where he was like, the villain in that.
Sam Cole:I don't remember seeing him in anything after that.
Brianna Budworth:Maybe in the Marvel universe a little bit.
Brianna Budworth:Right?
Sam Cole:That's right.

Host Nathan Shore:I've seen him performing something.
Host Nathan Shore:It's been a While.

Host Nathan Shore:Saoirse Ronan.
Brianna Budworth:Yep.
Host Nathan Shore:I think is in this.
Host Nathan Shore:I like her as an actress a lot, so this is something that I'm also very interested in.
Sam Cole:I love the lone.
Sam Cole:The lovely bones that she was in, directed by Peter Jackson.
Sam Cole:I love that movie.
Sam Cole:And a lot of people really don't love it.
Sam Cole:Love it.
Sam Cole:Yeah.
Brianna Budworth:Yes.
Brianna Budworth:I'm with you, Sam.

Host Nathan Shore:I saw that and I remember everyone hating on it.
Host Nathan Shore:I'm like, this is not terrible.

Sam Cole:But I hear that it just hit me in a strong way, I think, because it mixes a lot of genres.
Sam Cole:So people are like, what the heck is this?
Sam Cole:But for me, I was just like, oh, I like that movie.
Brianna Budworth:Yeah, I haven't seen that since it.
Brianna Budworth:Probably close to when it came out anyway.
