Alison Aulakh is a Spiritually Sober NYC Christian Comedian Making Subway Rats Smile. She is the CEO of a New York based Comedy Production Company established in November 2016 called The Sober Life of Floppy Fish LLC.

She got her start in comedy by doing funny train announcements on the subway and streets of New York. Alison teaches the bible through stand up comedy in a fish costume because a fish is a symbol for Jesus. She studied improv and acting at The New School for Drama.

Many ask her, what does it mean to be spiritually sober? She originally came up with the name Sober Floppy Fish because she doesn't drink, but later in life found a deeper meaning behind the name.

After an encounter with Jesus, where Alison had physical chalk on her hand where Jesus had the nails in his hands on the cross, she then understood what it meant to be a Sober Floppy Fish.

Being spiritually sober meant that Alison would begin her journey towards clean comedy.

So, what do floppy fish have to do with being spiritually sober? It means that Alison confidently embraces her imperfections as a Christian. She's a fish that's not scared to flop. She's that fish out of water that keeps on swimming.

If she can make even one person laugh when they're having a difficult day or inspire someone to be brave, then Alison knows she's on the right path.

Alison Aulakh uses her voice and platform to create universal laughter, peace, joy, and a safe space for acceptance without judgment.

She shines Jesus' light and teaches the bible through comedy in a sea of darkness. Her fearless and cringey comedy on stage makes it a memorable experience for all.

Her comedy reminds us that we have more in common than we think and it's about time we share in love and laughter.

Alison performed at the Tunnel of Oppression event in the East Village, NY, to support the issues of race and injustice. The film she wrote, produced, directed, and starred in called "The In Between" shines a light on the lack of diversity in theatre for mixed race actors. As someone who is mixed race (half Indian/Pakistani and half Irish/British) with dual citizenship (US / British Citizenship) it's an issue close to her heart. She has worked in a variety of mediums such as film, TV, commercials, voiceover, music videos, and theatre. She grew up near San Francisco, CA and began acting at the age of five.

She starred in five TV pilots and has appeared in commercials for HP, John Muir Hospital, Collective Heath, and Lime Dating App among others. Alison did voiceover for a video game with EA Games as the lead Young Jessica. She was featured on Chance on Hulu. She was featured in several Bollywood Feature Films, the movie "Reality TV Movie" and the docudrama "Man Moment Machine" on the History Channel.

She has appeared in several Off-off Broadway shows in Times Square, including her lead role as Girl in "Drink and a Drag" at Manhattan Rep., Terry in the "Nighty Nite Show" at the PIT Loft, Shade/Lobster in "Emission" at Producers' Club Theatres, and Old Lady in "Double Take" at Manhattan Rep. Alison was the only undergraduate to be cast in two productions with the MFA graduating class of 2015. She performed in both The New School for Drama's MFA New Visions Directing Festival and New Voices Playwriting Festival where she played Girl with Telescope in "The Skriker," and Party Girl in "Temporal." Her bookings from The New School for Drama include: Lili in "Women and Wallace," and Rebecca in "What I Found in Montana.

Alison booked the Lead in the TV Pilot "Girl Power," and a supporting role in the TV Pilot "Dual Arrangements." She's worked with TVASIA on the TV show "Samachari News" where she wrote her own comedy sketches, shining a light on cultural appropriation, women's rights, the Me Too Movement, and cultural identity. Alison advocates for immigrant rights, helps the homeless, and speaks out for justice for marginalized groups through her Non-Profit Organization called "The Aulakh Initiative."

Alison previously attended Marin School of the Arts in California where she graduated with honors in the theatre arts department. She graduated with honors and a 4.0 from The New School for Drama in 2017 where she earned her BFA in Dramatic Arts with a concentration in Acting and a Minor in Filmmaking.

Speaker:

It's a great pleasure to connect with you.

Speaker:

What part of the world are you in today?

Speaker:

Thanks so much.

Speaker:

I'm so excited to be here.

Speaker:

I live in New York City, but I'm originally from San Francisco, California.

Speaker:

Ooh, from west to east.

Speaker:

Whoa, that's a big move.

Speaker:

Wow.

Speaker:

Yeah, I've been living here for 13 years, but yeah, I feel very blessed to be able to live in this city and really just open to wherever Jesus is going to take me in the future.

Speaker:

How did you come to meet Jesus?

Speaker:

A year ago, I had an encounter with Jesus.

Speaker:

I actually grew up Catholic.

Speaker:

I went to Catholic school when I was young, and then I fell away from the faith for a very long time.

Speaker:

And then in college, I went to a Christian church for two years and went away because my faith was not so deeply planted and rooted in Jesus.

Speaker:

So then I went on my own course trying to find the answers, trying to find happiness, and nothing was just filling my heart the way that Jesus does now.

Speaker:

And I was having a conversation with someone a year ago.

Speaker:

My life was so different a year ago.

Speaker:

And I was telling this person, you cannot say that Jesus is God.

Speaker:

He's definitely not God.

Speaker:

There's no way.

Speaker:

And I left the phone call knowing in my heart that Jesus was not God, but I had the curiosity.

Speaker:

So I said one prayer to Jesus.

Speaker:

I was outside in my parents' old backyard, and I said, Jesus, if you're the real deal, if you're actually God, have a bird come to this exact spot.

Speaker:

And then after a while, all of a sudden, out of nowhere, the bird came, and it was facing away from me.

Speaker:

All of a sudden, it turned and stared at me.

Speaker:

Why?

Speaker:

Wow, Jesus definitely heard me.

Speaker:

And immediately, I was just drawn to Jesus.

Speaker:

I didn't know what to expect when I said that prayer.

Speaker:

But really, it just took one prayer to hear him.

Speaker:

And then I went into my old room, and I looked in the mirror.

Speaker:

And all of a sudden, I had physical chalk on my hand, where Jesus had the nail in his hands on the cross.

Speaker:

I looked in the mirror, and I thought, whoa, is this just my eyes?

Speaker:

Is this real?

Speaker:

And I took my hand, and I moved my finger over the chalk, and actual chalk came off onto my other hand.

Speaker:

And that's the moment where I looked up at the ceiling.

Speaker:

And all of a sudden, I saw Jesus.

Speaker:

I actually saw his face.

Speaker:

It was the outline of his face.

Speaker:

It looked exactly how they depict him.

Speaker:

And, you know, it wasn't even, is that Jesus?

Speaker:

Immediately, I was, that is Jesus.

Speaker:

Every part of my whole being knew that that was him.

Speaker:

And it was one of the most joyful experiences I've ever had.

Speaker:

And all of a sudden, I start looking around the room, I start hearing the applause from the angels.

Speaker:

And I was like, what is that?

Speaker:

I didn't know in the moment what that was.

Speaker:

And in that moment, I received the Holy Spirit.

Speaker:

And my anxiety of my whole life was gone in a second.

Speaker:

And it never came back.

Speaker:

Have you ever seen the bird after that time?

Speaker:

Oh, I've seen so many signs from Jesus.

Speaker:

Not that one specifically.

Speaker:

But you know what, in the beginning, I was so curious about these signs from Jesus that I kept asking him for these signs.

Speaker:

And then it got to a point where actually, I was looking out the window, and I was asking Jesus for this sign.

Speaker:

And instead of getting what I wanted, this big truck passed by.

Speaker:

And it said something like, best way.

Speaker:

And immediately, I knew Jesus was saying, my way is the best way.

Speaker:

And from that moment on, instead of asking for signs, I just asked Jesus like, help me here and see you and everything.

Speaker:

And when I started saying that, instead of wanting my will to be done, I started seeing him in everything.

Speaker:

Take me back to your timeline.

Speaker:

So you've had the experience of nothing short of a miracle, right?

Speaker:

Of the confirmation that Jesus is real.

Speaker:

What happened after?

Speaker:

Wow, my whole life changed.

Speaker:

He started speaking to me in visions in my dreams almost every night.

Speaker:

And it's been happening since then.

Speaker:

It's never stopped.

Speaker:

And you know, even growing up Catholic, I never really read the Bible.

Speaker:

I didn't know really anything about the Bible.

Speaker:

And then with the dreams that I was getting from Jesus, he was showing me things that were actually in the Bible.

Speaker:

And it wasn't happening once or twice, it was happening several times, to the point where, you know, I'm like, this is Jesus.

Speaker:

You know, I have just, it feels like thousands of examples of proof that he's real in my life.

Speaker:

And then what happened was that early on into getting visions from Jesus with prophecy, he told me he wanted me to be a Christian stand up comedian.

Speaker:

And now I had been doing comedy for 10 years, and my comedy was not aligned with Jesus at all, to the point where I wrote a play that completely made fun of Catholicism.

Speaker:

It was totally so far from Jesus.

Speaker:

And right before my encounter, I actually made a series of videos making fun of Jesus.

Speaker:

And so when I had my encounter with him, he told me, you're going to be a Christian stand up comedian.

Speaker:

And he went on to tell me that I was going to preach the Bible and the gospel through stand up comedy.

Speaker:

And I was so scared the first week, I was like, Oh, Jesus, can I do this?

Speaker:

And he gave me a vision in my dream to show me exactly how it was going to go and who would cancel.

Speaker:

And it all came to pass.

Speaker:

What an amazing story.

Speaker:

What does life look like today?

Speaker:

To be honest, it's night and day.

Speaker:

You know, the other day, I was looking back at old photos of myself.

Speaker:

And I feel very grateful that it's hard to even recognize the old me.

Speaker:

And I really love who I am now because I know that my identity is in Jesus, and my strength is from him.

Speaker:

And so in moments where maybe I doubt myself, because I never doubt him.

Speaker:

He shows me Allison, remember your identity.

Speaker:

Remember that you're my daughter.

Speaker:

And you can do this because it all comes from me.

Speaker:

And so I just am filled with so much more joy.

Speaker:

Now I'm walking down the street, and I'm smiling in ways that I never did before.

Speaker:

And, you know, I used to feel alone.

Speaker:

And now I really don't feel alone.

Speaker:

He is always with me.

Speaker:

I'm constantly talking to him, laughing with him, sharing everything with him.

Speaker:

And I've never experienced this love before, the way that he sees me, you know, I think the amazing thing about being Catholic, especially with confession is, when you leave your sins in the confession booth, and you're forgiven, he really does not hold it against you.

Speaker:

He really has this complete forgiveness that is just filled with so much unconditional love.

Speaker:

And it's so amazing.

Speaker:

And so I'm just really grateful.

Speaker:

And I'm also really grateful that he completely healed me in so many different ways.

Speaker:

Early on, when I met Jesus, I said one prayer to him because I had long COVID and I had asthma.

Speaker:

And I had this really bad cough that lasted years.

Speaker:

I said one prayer to him to heal my lungs.

Speaker:

I felt my lungs expand and I could run miles without my inhaler.

Speaker:

Message in a bottle.

Speaker:

What is the message you'd leave for Allison?

Speaker:

I would want my younger self to know that she's so brave, and that Jesus is so proud of her.

Speaker:

You know, that the version I am of myself right now, I am really at a point in my life where I would risk everything for Jesus.

Speaker:

I'm willing to lose it all to be able to fight for this world.

Speaker:

He's told me how much he wants me to fight for the people in this world, fight for peace and unity in this world.

Speaker:

And just that vulnerable, but filled with strength, place that I'm in right now, I'm sure that Jesus is looking at me telling me, Allison, I'm so proud of you for being willing to lose it all for me.

Speaker:

He sacrificed everything for us to live forever.

Speaker:

And I just, I'm so filled in my heart with respect for him, that I want to be able to sacrifice all that I have for him.

Speaker:

It's been an honor to speak with you, Allison.

Speaker:

In closing, is there anything else you'd like to share?

Speaker:

I'd like to share that it takes a lot of courage to be curious about Jesus.

Speaker:

Especially, you know, I was in a place where I was completely against Christianity.

Speaker:

I had a lot of bad experiences with it.

Speaker:

And if anyone is listening and they have even the tiniest bit of courage to ask him if he's God, even that act itself is so brave, is so brave and so open.

Speaker:

And even if you've experienced trauma in the church or things like that, can you be brave and ask him if he can hear you?

Speaker:

Allison, I appreciate you tremendously.

Speaker:

This is a pleasure that I treasure.

Speaker:

Thank you for being on What is Inspired by 12 Minute Converse.
