Hey, welcome back to another

2

:

edition of the daily Bible podcast.

3

:

Remote edition, remote edition.

4

:

Yeah.

5

:

Why?

6

:

Well, we both, you and I,

I think you're at home.

7

:

Are you at home?

8

:

I'm not, I'm at the office,

but you're at the office.

9

:

Okay.

10

:

I've got, yeah.

11

:

You've got young ones still in, in the

potty training stage, diaper stage.

12

:

So that makes sense.

13

:

Yeah.

14

:

Yeah.

15

:

Yeah.

16

:

And yeah, there's, they're both pretty

young, so leaving them alone at home,

17

:

I did think about it, but I decided

to stay home just to, just to make

18

:

sure I was going to leave a bowl of

kibble and bit and some water, but

19

:

then someone advised me against it.

20

:

It's probably good.

21

:

I think the, the people listening to

this, especially the ladies, probably

22

:

Especially your wife, if she's tuning

in from the women's retreat, she's

23

:

thankful that that's not the case.

24

:

Oh, but today's Sunday though.

25

:

Today's Sunday, so they're back.

26

:

Never mind.

27

:

They're not listening

from the women's retreat.

28

:

They should not be.

29

:

If they are, something went really wrong.

30

:

Yeah, or Kelly just preached way too long.

31

:

Kelly Atterbury preached way too

long if they're still down there.

32

:

No, um, yeah, they're, they're back.

33

:

Hopefully we're, we're trusting.

34

:

It's been a good weekend.

35

:

Uh, was excited to, uh, to hear about it.

36

:

So, um, should be a great time.

37

:

I'm excited to hear what

it was, what it was like.

38

:

I mean, it's our first one, so

we know it's going to be good.

39

:

Yeah.

40

:

So there's nothing to compare it to.

41

:

It's not like anybody's going

to be like, Oh, well, it

42

:

wasn't as good as last year's.

43

:

Right.

44

:

So, but no, it's a, they're going to

have a great time at rest, but yeah,

45

:

Sunday we're uh, we're back at church.

46

:

We've got a regular service today.

47

:

No, no special events, no communion

service or anything else like that.

48

:

But um, every Sunday special,

every Sunday is special.

49

:

There you go.

50

:

Yeah.

51

:

Yeah.

52

:

Went to the state fair the other day.

53

:

I don't know if I brought that

up on, on the podcast or not.

54

:

I think I told you, but I don't think so.

55

:

Yeah, it was a good time.

56

:

We, uh, I had a funnel cake.

57

:

That's my go to man.

58

:

The funnel cake is my jam.

59

:

Every single time I'm there.

60

:

I'm sure they're good,

but are they that good?

61

:

Is that, was that worth a 10 tickets?

62

:

Um, I think so.

63

:

Well, and that's how they get you, right?

64

:

Because the tickets it's a dollar to

dollar equal, whatever conversion rate.

65

:

So 1 one ticket, uh, but when you look

at it and you're like, Oh, 10 tickets, it

66

:

seems so trivial to throw out 10 tickets.

67

:

And then you're like, wait a minute.

68

:

I just bought a corn dog for eight bucks.

69

:

I don't think that's worth it.

70

:

Eight bucks a day.

71

:

Yeah, exactly.

72

:

Um, yeah.

73

:

So, but it was good and I, I tried

the cheesecake too, that, that you

74

:

were raving about last year, the,

the, uh, Biscoff cheesecake and

75

:

that, that was, that was really good.

76

:

That was a life changing

situation, wasn't it?

77

:

Yeah, that was super good.

78

:

We were, uh, we were thrilled and

we might go back just for that.

79

:

I would recommend pulling your

kids out from school, playing

80

:

hooky, and going on a non fair day

because it was much more enjoyable.

81

:

There were far less people around.

82

:

I like people, I don't like the

parking, but the more the merrier.

83

:

As long as no one's pulling out guns,

I know last year we had a situation,

84

:

and that's still currently in the

courts, but as long as that doesn't

85

:

happen, hey, the more the merrier.

86

:

I am learning to like people.

87

:

Yeah, security at Gideon did seem

a little bit more robust this year.

88

:

There were like it was robust last year.

89

:

Yeah.

90

:

Yeah.

91

:

I mean, I think I went through

the metal detector thing and

92

:

they, they looked in our bags.

93

:

They pulled me aside for a

random, uh, a random frisk again,

94

:

again, a random again, bro.

95

:

Let me tell you anytime

I go to the airport.

96

:

I can almost guarantee that

I will be randomly frisked.

97

:

At this point, I'm beginning

to wonder, uh, is it random?

98

:

How random is this?

99

:

And am I on a no flight list?

100

:

That's just, did I just get a TSA

agent angry with me for some reason?

101

:

Yes.

102

:

A hundred percent.

103

:

Yes.

104

:

No, um, Hey, let's jump into, uh,

our Bible reading for the day.

105

:

We've only got, uh, one chapter

today's reading good at talking.

106

:

So we'll see how that goes.

107

:

We'll see how it goes.

108

:

Yeah.

109

:

Luke 11, and it starts out with,

with quite the, the passage.

110

:

It's the, the Lord's prayer again.

111

:

So Luke 11, one through four shorter

treatment than what we found in Matthew.

112

:

Matthew.

113

:

Uh, six, nine through 15

is the parallel account.

114

:

That's the broader

treatment of prayer here.

115

:

Luke, um, records a similar template

that the Lord gives, but doesn't go

116

:

into as much detail as Matthew does.

117

:

And that's what it is.

118

:

It's a template.

119

:

It's not, I mentioned this with Matthew,

but again, just to drive this home,

120

:

this is not meant to be part of our

liturgy that we recite this rote.

121

:

That's not what Jesus was intending.

122

:

When he said this, he was teaching

them how to pray, which is the The

123

:

question that was being asked by the

disciples, Lord, teach us to pray.

124

:

So he said, okay, pray this way.

125

:

He doesn't say pray these exact words

all the time, every day, all the time,

126

:

five times a day, which should kind

of be a violation of the thing that

127

:

he's telling the Pharisees, right?

128

:

At least heaping up empty phrases.

129

:

So that would be one big reason

that we don't prescribe you to say

130

:

this many, our fathers, this many

Hail Marys, that kind of thing.

131

:

Yeah.

132

:

No Hail Marys.

133

:

We would say, don't pray any Hail Marys.

134

:

Yeah, but, uh, it's, it's not wrong

to pray the Lord's prayer, but where

135

:

it does cross over to being something

that's not helpful or useful is

136

:

when our minds are not engaged.

137

:

I grew up, um, in the Episcopalian

church, which I know my mom

138

:

listens to this podcast still.

139

:

She, she, uh, was part of that

and still part of that, I believe.

140

:

Um, and, There was a lot of the, the,

the liturgy there, the stand up, sit

141

:

down, fight, fight, fight kind of,

but there was no fight, fight, fight.

142

:

It was just a lot of stand up, sit down.

143

:

I would love to be part

of one of those services.

144

:

Yeah, I want to see the

fight, fight, fight part.

145

:

Right.

146

:

And the, the liturgy is beautiful

in and of itself for so much.

147

:

And it's, it's rich.

148

:

It can be, but it can also just lose

all its meaning because you're doing

149

:

the same thing every single week.

150

:

You're showing up, you're

going through the same prayers,

151

:

the same creeds, the same.

152

:

Routine and it can become going

through the motions now on that point.

153

:

So can what we do.

154

:

Um, we can Be predictable and to an

extent we are predictable and it can

155

:

become going through the motions for

us too So this is just a reminder to

156

:

us in this passage a challenge to us

to make sure that we're not Slipping

157

:

into this just wrote going through the

motions when we show up at church on

158

:

sunday But we're giving intentional

thought whether it's our prayer life

159

:

Or the songs that we're singing in

worship or listening to the sermon You

160

:

Uh, all of that needs to be done with

great thoughtfulness and intentionality.

161

:

And, and that's what Jesus

wanted with our prayer life too.

162

:

And here, Luke in Luke 11, do you

think that there's any, I don't

163

:

know, a surefire way to avoid that?

164

:

I know that sometimes I have my

phrases that I go to, I try my best

165

:

to vary the conversation with God.

166

:

I don't want him to get

tired of hearing from me.

167

:

I don't think he ever does it truly,

but I noticed that a lot of the

168

:

same phrases come out of my mouth.

169

:

I say the same things

in much the same way.

170

:

Most of the time.

171

:

Yeah.

172

:

How do I avoid letting that become

just a mindless chatter with God, as

173

:

opposed to as what you're saying here,

kind of that reverential, fully aware,

174

:

fully present engagement with God.

175

:

That's really hard to do.

176

:

Help us out with that.

177

:

Totally.

178

:

It's really hard.

179

:

It is really hard to do.

180

:

It requires, um, discipline.

181

:

It requires intentionality.

182

:

It requires prayer.

183

:

And so, you know, even going into

Sunday mornings, being aware of that,

184

:

that pitfall, that, that danger, that

temptation to just go through the

185

:

motions, to turn the mind off and just

kind of walk through things as you're

186

:

sitting there before the service begins.

187

:

As that countdown is on, on the screens.

188

:

One of the reasons we have the countdown

there is not just to encourage people

189

:

to stop chit chatting in the back, but

to, to help people prepare for when

190

:

the service is going to get going.

191

:

And so if you're sit sitting

there before the service, taking

192

:

a minute or two to, Right.

193

:

It's taking a minute or two to read

the passage is going to be preached

194

:

on that Sunday, taking a minute or two

to, um, to really think about the songs

195

:

that, that we're going to be singing.

196

:

I mean, they're printed on

the inside of the bulletin.

197

:

You put together a Spotify

playlist, I think weekly on, um,

198

:

the songs that we're going to sing.

199

:

And so you can know even our worship, what

that's going to be like ahead of time.

200

:

And so it's, it's being, it's, it's,

you, it doesn't, you can't expect it

201

:

to happen naturally because the natural

default is just to go through the motions.

202

:

It's just to go, okay, I know this song.

203

:

I've heard this passage preached.

204

:

Let me just be here and

kind of sit passively.

205

:

You have to be active.

206

:

There should be a certain level

of exhaustion coming out of

207

:

Sunday morning because of that.

208

:

Amen to that, bro.

209

:

And I think it takes a great deal

of preparation for us to do that.

210

:

I mean, like anything that requires,

I don't know, more than 5 percent

211

:

of your Cognitive awareness,

things like that take effort.

212

:

And I think that kind of mentality

really starts the night before I am

213

:

almost fanatical about getting good

rest the night before I go to bed early.

214

:

I wake up early.

215

:

I try to get a good workout

in before church because I

216

:

want, I want to be present.

217

:

And again, you're, you're

talking about all day, every day.

218

:

I think Sunday morning, I

really want to have that.

219

:

I want to fight for that.

220

:

Cause I know everything's

working against me, but day by

221

:

day, that's really hard to do.

222

:

Um, but it is, it is a worthy, noble

and right goal for us to pursue.

223

:

I would agree.

224

:

Yeah.

225

:

From here, he goes in verses five

through 13 and Luke 11 to talking about

226

:

seeking and receiving good things.

227

:

And he uses an example, uses an example

there, um, of a, a friend who comes to one

228

:

of his, his buddies at midnight and knocks

on the door and says, Hey, I need three

229

:

loaves of bread and the persistence and

the impudence and, and, and yet it's that

230

:

persistence that leads the other person

to get up and, and, and provide the,

231

:

the thing that he needs when otherwise

you would never expect him to do that.

232

:

So, um, This is about asking

for receiving good things.

233

:

It's connected to prayer because that's,

uh, that's the, the context here.

234

:

And this is again, when, when the father

said, when Jesus says, you know, the

235

:

father gives good gifts to his children.

236

:

And if you are, who are evil, know

how to do that, then how much more

237

:

will your heavenly father give the

Holy spirit to those who ask him?

238

:

So this is a little bit of a shift

from what we read, uh, about this

239

:

in, in, I think, in Matthew, um,

Because he doesn't say good gifts.

240

:

He says, how much more will the

father give the Holy Spirit?

241

:

Pastor, what are your thoughts

on the significance in that

242

:

shift that Luke has here?

243

:

I think the best good gift God

could give us is his Holy spirit.

244

:

So when Matthew presents it, it seems

like he's giving us a more broad based

245

:

view of the good gifts God wants to give.

246

:

And certainly that's the case.

247

:

He gives us good gifts all the time.

248

:

I, I eat delicious food.

249

:

Almost every single day food.

250

:

That's more than just nutrients.

251

:

It's, it's actually really tasty.

252

:

I love it.

253

:

That's a good gift of God.

254

:

He doesn't have to do that for me.

255

:

He gives me good gifts.

256

:

So asking, seeking and knocking is

an invitation for us to experience

257

:

the best that God has offered.

258

:

But of course, the very best of God's

best is going to be his Holy Spirit,

259

:

which I think Paul kind of alludes to

Ephesians chapter five, where to walk by

260

:

the spirit, where to keep in step with the

spirit, where to, uh, Seek to be filled

261

:

with the spirit, which I think means that

we can experience more or less of the

262

:

spirits empowerment in our day to day

lives, uh, based on how much we engage

263

:

with him and how much we ask for that.

264

:

And yet at the same time, the

disciples had such a radically

265

:

different understanding of that at

this time than we do totally because

266

:

they had not yet received the spirit.

267

:

They weren't going to receive

the spirit until his ascension.

268

:

Um, even in Acts one, eight, he's saying,

my spirit is going to come upon you.

269

:

And so even at that point, I mean, it's

not until Pentecost that the spirit

270

:

descends upon, uh, you Some of the

followers, not even all of the followers.

271

:

And in the book of Acts, you

have some interesting situations.

272

:

We'll get there where the disciples are

going and laying hands on people that

273

:

have apparently already expressed faith,

but have not yet received the spirit.

274

:

And so how does that work?

275

:

We'll cross those bridges when we get

there, but this is an interesting, you,

276

:

you wonder what was the disciples frame

of mind and how did they understand

277

:

these words from Jesus at this point?

278

:

Cause we understand them

through the church age.

279

:

Right.

280

:

Exactly.

281

:

Um, good point.

282

:

Um, okay.

283

:

Next section here.

284

:

We've got the, the, uh, the house divided.

285

:

This is 14 through 23.

286

:

Again, this is the accusation of

Jesus casting out demons by demons.

287

:

What's interesting about this is Luke

leaves out, at least in this section,

288

:

in this context, anything about

the blasphemy of the Holy Spirit.

289

:

Um, whereas the other gospel writers,

the other synoptic writers, um, Connect

290

:

it to this instance where he's casting

out a demon and the Pharisees are saying,

291

:

Hey, you're doing that by demonic powers.

292

:

And Jesus says, Hey, that's,

that's dangerous territory there.

293

:

How can a house stand that's divided?

294

:

If, if demons cast out demons, what's

going on, how does that even work?

295

:

Um, but that's, what's happening here

in Luke, uh, Luke 11, not sure why he

296

:

doesn't bring in Luke doesn't record

the blasphemy of the spirit part, but he

297

:

doesn't, it wasn't part of his research.

298

:

It wasn't part of what came up as

he was, uh, preparing this, this

299

:

gospel and recording it, but the

others do in this, this situation.

300

:

The return of the unclean

spirit versus 24 to 26.

301

:

We talked about that briefly last time.

302

:

This is one of those situations

that's a little odd to read about.

303

:

But again, I think that the target

is the Pharisees and they looked like

304

:

they had had their house in order,

uh, from their external righteousness,

305

:

but because they weren't right

with God, truly, then they were.

306

:

They were vulnerable to be used by the

enemy and they were going to be used

307

:

by the enemy and even greater degree.

308

:

And so this is a warning to them

of saying, hey, lest you think

309

:

that you're clean, understand

that you're not really clean.

310

:

Even as we think about the disciples

in the upper room when Jesus says,

311

:

not all of you here are clean.

312

:

And, uh, and this is another

instance of him talking about that.

313

:

You think you're clean because

you've got the outside clean.

314

:

But really there's, there's a lot of

danger to the inside being not only

315

:

unclean, but demonically influenced there.

316

:

I guess to clarify that, the unclean

spirit is another way to talk

317

:

about something demonic, right?

318

:

Right.

319

:

Right.

320

:

Yep.

321

:

Uh, versus 27 through 28.

322

:

Uh, we, we probably all have Catholic

friends or relatives, perhaps.

323

:

I think this is interesting.

324

:

I think you almost get Jesus rebuking

Mariolatry here when in Matthew, uh,

325

:

or Luke 11, 27, rather, um, a woman in

the crowd raises her voice and says,

326

:

blessed is the womb that bore you

in the breasts at which you nursed.

327

:

And that's referring to Mary.

328

:

Right.

329

:

And Jesus says, In response,

blessed rather are those who

330

:

hear the word of God and keep it.

331

:

And so that, that's an interesting,

I don't, I've never seen anybody

332

:

treat that in regards directly to the

Mariolatry, by the way, that means the

333

:

worship of Mary, um, Mary as an idol.

334

:

Um, I don't think I've necessarily seen

that connection there, but that struck

335

:

me reading that this time around, like.

336

:

Jesus is stopping somebody from blessing

Mary and saying, no, blessed rather

337

:

are those that hear the word of God

and do it, which is similar to when

338

:

the people come to interrupt them

and say, Hey, your family is here.

339

:

And he says, who's my family.

340

:

But those that do the will of God, um,

they're, they're my brothers and mothers.

341

:

Yeah.

342

:

I think Luke has a very sharp angle,

um, not against the family, but when

343

:

he's, when he's ranking allegiance, it's

he's definitely putting Jesus first.

344

:

And I don't know how a

Catholic would respond to this.

345

:

All I could say is that you might

be able to say, well, this, uh,

346

:

he's not saying don't do that.

347

:

He's saying, Instead of that, do

this, this is first and foremost.

348

:

So he's not saying no, never, but no,

not this time or no, not in that order.

349

:

Yeah, of course we would reject that.

350

:

We would, we would still say

that's the wrong, that's the wrong

351

:

interpretation of this, of the sensor.

352

:

But by, by, uh, every measure,

Luke is making it evident.

353

:

Jesus wants our primary highest

allegiance, even over our closest

354

:

relationships, including family.

355

:

And Mary would have rejected it too.

356

:

Um, she was not.

357

:

About bowing up and saying, look at me.

358

:

And we see that even from her song

earlier in Luke's gospel as well.

359

:

All right.

360

:

Uh, 29 to 32.

361

:

This is the prove it to

show us the sign of Jonah.

362

:

We talked about that in, uh,

in Matthew's gospel, um, in the

363

:

situation there where he says, look,

you're not going to get a sign.

364

:

The only sign you're going

to have is the sign of Jonah.

365

:

And remember, we talked about

the, the, the flexibility.

366

:

They weren't as rigid with

their accounting of time

367

:

and days as we are today.

368

:

Um, so the three days, three nights,

it, it, it measures up to the

369

:

present Jewish understanding there.

370

:

Uh, versus 33 to 36.

371

:

I called the section bright eyes

because the, the light, the,

372

:

the eye is the lamp of the body.

373

:

You want your eye to lighten you.

374

:

Yeah.

375

:

Thanks, man.

376

:

Um, you want your eye to be bright.

377

:

I'm just trying to be creative.

378

:

You get on me for not being creative.

379

:

Sometimes that's great to be creative.

380

:

Get to it, man.

381

:

Anyways, bright eyes.

382

:

Yeah.

383

:

So, um, this is in the

sermon on the Mount.

384

:

Back in, in Matthew's gospel.

385

:

Uh, but here Luke introduces

it in, in this context.

386

:

Um, and he just says, Hey, be, be careful

that the light in you not become dark.

387

:

Uh, and that's, that's such an important

thing for us to, to be mindful of what

388

:

our eyes take in, that the eyes have

a huge impact on the rest of the body.

389

:

Um, and the, the, the purity and the

holiness, the godliness, uh, it's, it's

390

:

that input produces output concept again.

391

:

And, uh, he's warning against the things

that we see and he didn't even live in.

392

:

The time that we live in as

far as the the modesty issues

393

:

and everything else going on.

394

:

All right.

395

:

Um, Finally 37 through 54 you get direct

jesus direct jesus because he's going

396

:

to take on the the pharisees and the

lawyers And he issues these woes against

397

:

them the parallel to this is found in

matthew chapter 23 And so in this section

398

:

he is giving woes against the pharisees

to start and then One of the lawyers

399

:

in verse 45 says hey teacher in saying

these things you insult us also and

400

:

jesus says Buckle up, buddy Because then

he turns to the lawyers and he starts

401

:

issuing the woes to the lawyers too.

402

:

So, um, the, the, the word of woe

was a word of, of curse or damnation.

403

:

And so this is strong.

404

:

I mean, this is, that's why

I called it direct Jesus.

405

:

Jesus is rebuking their hypocrisy.

406

:

He's rebuking their, uh,

their self righteousness.

407

:

Um, he's, he's.

408

:

This is serious.

409

:

This is heavy.

410

:

Uh, he quotes in, in verse 49, he

says, therefore also the wisdom of God

411

:

said, I will send them the prophets.

412

:

We're not exactly sure

where that comes from.

413

:

There's no canonical

book that has that quote.

414

:

Also though, there's no non canonical

book that we found that has that either.

415

:

So It may have been a given or

known statement in the time,

416

:

um, but, uh, Jesus says, you are

the ones that have done this.

417

:

You are the ones that are,

are, are guilty of this.

418

:

Uh, and so in verse 51, they're going to

be held accountable for rejecting the,

419

:

the, the prophets from Abel to Zechariah.

420

:

So Abel, interesting that they list

him as, as the, or Jesus lists him

421

:

as the first prophet, all the way

to Zechariah being the last prophet

422

:

before the, the, uh, the end there.

423

:

But, um, Any insights on the, on

the Abel's reference there, Pastor?

424

:

Yeah, no, no, I have thoughts, but

no, no particular insights other than

425

:

the fact that scripture uses the word

profit sometimes in ways that are more

426

:

flexible than I think we would be.

427

:

Yeah.

428

:

And this is one of those times.

429

:

Uh, in what sense was he a prophet?

430

:

I think that's a, that's an

interesting question that I

431

:

don't have a great answer to.

432

:

Or the other thing that came to mind is

that idea that the, the blood of Abel

433

:

cries out from the ground, but the blood

of, of Christ speaks a better word.

434

:

Um, and so perhaps the, the blood of

Abel being the, the prophetic message

435

:

there, um, calling for justice.

436

:

Uh, and, and Christ, the blood

of Christ is, is providing

437

:

mercy and grace in response.

438

:

Who knows?

439

:

Anyways, Jesus doesn't like the self

righteous hypocrisy of the Pharisees

440

:

or the lawyers for that matter.

441

:

And that's how the chapter

ends there with that focus.

442

:

Yeah.

443

:

I think one of the things that stood out

to me here is he continues to harp on

444

:

the same theme, which is good for us.

445

:

Then verse 41, he says,

give alms, uh, give as alms.

446

:

The things that are within and

behold, everything is clean for you.

447

:

Uh, the idea here is he doesn't

want religious conformity.

448

:

Does it want our externals?

449

:

It was, we were talking

about this in prairie.

450

:

Does it want our prayerful petitions that

are uttered in vanity or thoughtlessness?

451

:

Um, God is concerned that

we give him all we are.

452

:

Truly and, and fully and deeply and

to give him something else, uh, to

453

:

give him affectation or to give him

some kind of presentation of what you

454

:

think he wants is playing a fool's

game because he's not into that.

455

:

He's not impressed.

456

:

He doesn't like it.

457

:

He doesn't want it.

458

:

He wants us for who we are.

459

:

Um, and he wants the, the genuine

worship that comes from the

460

:

inside out, not the outside in.

461

:

Yeah, that's good.

462

:

That's good.

463

:

Well, let's pray and then we'll

be done with this episode.

464

:

God, thanks for this, uh, this time.

465

:

We, we want to be as just as pastor was

saying, we want to be men of integrity.

466

:

We want to be holistic

in who we are before you.

467

:

We don't want to play a game on Sundays

or any other day of the week for that

468

:

matter, before you're trying to impress

you by going through the motions,

469

:

like we talked about previously, and

yet not having any heart behind it.

470

:

And so God help us to be authentic.

471

:

Before you which is a scary proposition,

but by your spirit that you have

472

:

given to us We uh, we know that it's

possible and so allow us to do that.

473

:

We would pray in jesus name.

474

:

Amen.

475

:

Amen All right, keep reading your bibles

and tune in again tomorrow for another

476

:

episode of the daily bible podcast.

477

:

We'll see you then
